The short version
- No account is needed. Without one, your highlights, notes, bookmarks, answers and reading progress stay in your browser.
- If you sign in, that same study data is synced to your account so it appears on your other devices.
- Questions you send to Ask AI are processed by an AI provider to write the answer.
- No ads, no advertising trackers, no selling or sharing of personal data for marketing.
- You can export or delete your data from Settings at any time.
Data on your device
The site stores your study data in your browser's storage (IndexedDB): highlights and notes, bookmarks, how far you have read, quick-check answers, table entries and display settings. It also keeps a random device identifier, used only to apply the daily Ask AI limit for guests, and a small copy of your theme so pages open in the right colours. This data does not leave your device unless you sign in or use Ask AI. Clearing your browser data, or using Settings → Delete data on this device, removes it.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional. You can sign in with a one-time code sent to your email address, or with Google or Apple when those are enabled. When you sign in we receive and store:
- your email address (with Google or Apple, also your name and profile picture from that provider), and a session cookie that keeps you signed in;
- the study data listed above, so it can sync between your devices. Deleted items are kept as deletion markers for up to 30 days so every device learns about the deletion, then removed.
There are no passwords. Sign-in codes are emailed through Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES); a code works for 10 minutes and is stored only as a one-way hash. We use your email address only to sign you in, never for newsletters or marketing. We do not receive your Google or Apple password.
Ask AI
When you ask a question, we send your question, your class level and the part of the chapter it is about (the passage you highlighted and the text around it, or for a doubt about the whole chapter, the sections that match it) to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate the answer. Please don't include personal details in questions. We keep the conversation so you can ask follow-ups and reopen it later, plus a usage count (to enforce daily limits and our spending cap). Guest limits use your device identifier and a one-way hash of your network address, never the address itself.
AI answers can be wrong. They are a study aid, not a source of truth; check with your textbook and teacher.
What we never do
- Show advertising, or use advertising or social-media trackers.
- Sell personal data or share it for marketing.
- Build profiles of students for any purpose other than showing you your own progress.
- Use your highlights, notes or questions to train AI models.
Children and parents
Many of our readers are under 18. The site is designed so a student can learn without giving us any personal information. Signing in, which does involve personal information, should be done by a parent or guardian, or with their permission. A parent or guardian can ask us to delete a child's account and data at any time using the contact below, or delete it directly from Settings.
Storage and retention
Account data is stored with our database provider in India (Mumbai region), and the site is served through Amazon Web Services. We keep account data until you delete your account. Rate-limit counters expire automatically. Server logs are kept for 7 days.
Your choices
- Export: Settings → Export my data downloads everything stored for you as a JSON file.
- Delete: Settings → Delete my account removes your account and all synced data. Guests can delete the data on their device.
- Correct or ask: write to us and we will reply.
