5.1 Padhne se pehle

Socho, tum aaj raat ek goli nigal lo aur kal subah poori tarah invisible (अदृश्य) hokar utho. Bus stop par, class mein ya ghar par koi tumhe dekh nahi pata. Ek ghante tak yeh superpower jaisa lag sakta hai. Tum late hokar bhi school gate se chupchaap andar chale jaate, sun lete ki dost tumhare baare mein kya kehte hain, ya bina ticket ke cricket match mein ghus jaate. Phir problems shuru hoti hain. Logon ke saamne khaana kaise khaoge, auto kaise rokoge, ya family ko kaise yakeen dilaoge ki tum theek unke bagal mein khade ho?

Yeh story ek aise aadmi ki hai jo sach mein aisa kar leta hai. Griffin, ek bahut talented scientist, apne body ko invisible banane ka tareeka dhoondh leta hai. Wells ko chemistry mein utni dilchaspi nahi jitni us aadmi mein hai: jo power use har nazar se bacha leti hai, uske saath woh kya karta hai? Yeh story science fiction (विज्ञान कथा) hai. Yeh ek aisa scientific idea leti hai jo aaj possible nahi hai, aur phir uske effects ko aise follow karti hai jaise woh sach ho. Ise ek thriller ki tarah padho, aur character ke ek test ki tarah bhi.

Step 2: ek ke baad ek aur prints dikhte hain, seedhiyon se neeche aur street ke saath, baari-baari left aur right, phir bhi unke upar koi pair nahi. Step 3: street ke prints halke aur halke hote jaate hain jab tak aakhri prints gayab nahi ho jaate, kyunki keechad ghis gaya hai. Step 4: trail ke end par ek bada question mark dikhta hai aur saath mein likha hai Whose feet?

Kisi story ko science fiction kya banata hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (D) Woh imagine karti hai ki agar koi scientific idea sach ho jaaye to aage kya hoga

Science fiction science ke baare mein what if? poochti hai aur uske results follow karti hai. Lab setting ya future ki date common hai par zaroori nahi, aur kisi real scientist ki life story biography hoti hai.

5.2 Story padhna

Story do halves mein bati hai, aur tumhari textbook har half ko ek Read and Find Out box se mark karti hai. Pehla half kadaake ki sardi mein London mein set hai. Yeh batata hai ki Griffin kaise bina dikhe streets mein bhatakne laga aur wahan kaise survive karta hai. Doosra half Iping, ek shaant English village, mein jaata hai, jahan inn mein ek ajeeb lodger ek ke baad ek uljhan bhare events shuru kar deta hai. Fig. 5.2 uska route dikhata hai.

Ek aur baat jaanna kaam ki hai. Wells ka poora novel Iping se shuru hota hai aur Griffin apna London wala past bahut baad mein batata hai. Textbook ki retelling events ko time order mein rakhti hai, isliye scientist ka secret tumhe pehle hi page par pata chal jaata hai.

7/7Inn mein uska bhed khulta hai, woh ladkar chhoot jaata hai aur gayab ho jaata hai.

Fig. 5.2London ke ek jalte ghar se ek village inn ki ladaai tak.

Do bands mein ek schematic map. Upar wala band London hai, jismein chaar numbered stops ek raaste se jude hain; neeche wala band Iping village hai, jismein teen stops hain, aur yeh London se ek railway line se juda hai. Step 1: stop 1, uski lodgings, jahan woh aag lagata hai. Step 2: stop 2, ek street jahan ladke uske footprints ke peeche jaate hain. Step 3: stop 3, ek bada store jahan woh raat bitata hai. Step 4: stop 4, Drury Lane ki ek costume shop jahan use disguise milta hai. Step 5: train use stop 5, Iping ki inn tak le jaati hai. Step 6: stop 6, clergyman ka study, jahan se paise gayab hote hain. Step 7: stop 7, wapas inn mein, uska bhed khulta hai aur woh bhaag jaata hai.

5.2.1 Part I: London mein invisible

Wells ek paheli se shuru karte hain. London ke do ladke ek doorstep par nange pairon ke geele, keechad bhare prints dekhte hain, aur aas-paas koi nahi hai. Jab woh dekh rahe hote hain, pichhle print ke bagal mein ek naya print aa jaata hai, phir aur, jaise khaali pairon ki ek jodi chali ja rahi ho. Woh trail ke peeche jaate hain, lekin chalne wale ke talvon ka keechad jaldi khatam ho jaata hai aur trail kho jaati hai.

Tabhi narrator humein secret batata hai. Chalne wala Griffin hai, ek scientist jiske experiments ka goal ek zinda body ko invisible banana tha. Aakhri step tha rare drugs ka ek mixture nigalna, aur woh kaam kar gaya. Ab light uske andar se waise hi guzar jaati hai jaise ek saaf window pane se. Phir bhi woh maans aur haddi ka hi hai: use chhua ja sakta hai, use bhookh lagti hai aur thand bhi lagti hai.

Woh sardi ki street par nange pair kyun hai, yeh uske baare mein bahut kuch batata hai. Griffin ne jis ghar mein woh rehta tha usmein aag laga di, ek landlord se badla lene ke liye jo use nikaalna chahta tha. Sirf uski body invisible thi, kapde nahi, isliye bina dikhe bhaagne ke liye use kapde peeche chhodne pade. Ek hi raat mein uska room, uske paise aur uske saare kapde chale gaye.

Kadaake ki sardi mein London bina kapdon ke rehne ki jagah nahi hai, isliye Griffin garmi dhoondhne nikalta hai. Woh ek bade department store ke andar tab tak chhupa rehta hai jab tak raat ke liye darwaaze band nahi ho jaate. Phir poori jagah uski hai: shelves se garam kapde, restaurant aur food counters se khaana, aur quilts ke dher se bana bistar. Ek problem se woh bach nahi sakta. Kapde pehne to woh phir se dikh jaata hai.

Subah woh zyada der tak so jaata hai. Do assistants jaldi aakar uski taraf aate hain; woh bhaagta hai, aur chase shuru ho jaata hai. Bachne ke liye use abhi pehna hua sab kuch utaarna padta hai, isliye woh theek wahin pahunch jaata hai jahan se shuru kiya tha: bina dikhe, aur January ki thand mein kaanpta hua.

Is baar use kapdon se zyada chahiye: use ek chehra chahiye. Drury Lane, London ke theatre district ka dil, mein aisi shops hain jo plays ke liye costumes deti hain, aur woh bina dikhe ek shop mein ghus jaata hai. Upar woh ek disguise taiyaar karta hai: badi hat, dark glasses, nakli naak, side-whiskers aur sir par lipti bandages. Bahar nikalte waqt woh bina kuch soche owner ko peeche se maarta hai, aur use loot leta hai.

Invisible scientist ka raaz sabse pehle kis cheez ne khola?
Answer dekho

Answer (C) Usne keechad mein pair rakha aur footprints chhod diye

Keechad bhare talvon ne prints chhode jinhe ladke dekh aur follow kar sake. Drug ka asar khatam nahi hua, aur coat baad mein, store mein aaya.

5.2.2 Part II: Iping inn ka ajnabi

Iske baad Griffin countryside ki taraf jaata hai. Iping village mein woh inn mein do rooms leta hai, bheed se door shaanti ki ummeed mein. Use ulta milta hai. Kadaake ki sardi mein ek chhote village mein, bandages mein lipta, dark glasses aur bade whiskers wala guest mahinon mein kisi ki dekhi sabse dilchasp cheez hai. Innkeeper ki wife, Mrs Hall, baatcheet ki ummeed karti hain aur badle mein ek chhota sa bhaashan milta hai: woh shaanti se kaam karne aaya hai, koi rukawat nahi chahta, aur ek accident ki wajah se apna chehra dhak kar rakhta hai.

Do cheezein Mrs Hall ko sabr rakhne deti hain. Unhone man bana liya hai ki unka lodger bas ek eccentric (सनकी) scientist hai, hoshiyaar aur ajeeb, aisa jo logon par jhalla padta hai. Aur usne aane se pehle hi rooms ke paise de diye the. Doosri wajah zyada din nahi chalti: Griffin ke chori ke paise khatam ho jaate hain, aur woh ek cheque ki kahani bana deta hai jo supposedly raaste mein hai.

Woh ek poker lekar andar ghuste hain, chor ko pakadne ke liye taiyaar, aur khaali room paate hain. Har kona, chimney tak, chhaan maarne par bhi koi nahi milta, phir bhi ghar ke paise gayab hain. Hairaan clergyman saara din bas isi ki baat karte hain.

Usi subah thodi der baad Halls ki baari aati hai. Unka guest apne room ki bahut sakhti se hifaazat karta hai, isliye jab unhe uska darwaaza khula aur room shaayad khaali milta hai, to curiosity jeet jaati hai aur woh andar chale jaate hain. Jo dikhta hai uska koi matlab nahi banta: thanda bistar, aur wahi kapde aur bandages jinke bina woh kabhi dikhta nahi, room mein idhar-udhar pade hain. Agar uske kapde yahan hain, to woh kahan hai? Jawab ek sniff ki aawaaz mein aata hai, Mrs Hall ke kaan ke bilkul paas.

Phir furniture unpar palat padta hai. Lodger ki hat udkar unke chehre par aati hai, ek chair dono ki taraf jhapatti hai aur unhe dhakel kar room se bahar kar deti hai, aur darwaaza dhadaam se band hokar lock ho jaata hai. Halls ko yeh jaadu lagta hai. Hum, jo secret jaante hain, Griffin ko chair ghumaate hue imagine kar sakte hain.

Hili hui Mrs Hall tay karti hain ki room mein bhoot hain aur apne lodger ko blame karti hain ki usne unke furniture mein spirits chhod di hain. Apni guzar chuki maa ki chair se hamla hona unhe dhoka jaisa lagta hai. Village mein witchcraft ki baatein hone lagti hain. Lekin jab log clergyman ki khaali desk ke baare mein sunte hain, to unhe ek zyada practical baat bhi dikhti hai: jo guest kehta tha ki uske paas paise nahi, ab uske haath mein cash hai. Chupchaap constable ko khabar bheji jaati hai.

Mrs Hall law ka intezaar nahi karti. Woh seedhe apne guest ke paas jaati hain, jo ab phir se kapde aur bandages mein hai, aur jawab maangti hain. Usne unki chair ke saath kya kiya? Woh band darwaazon se kaise aata-jaata hai? Griffin, jo waise bhi jaldi gussa ho jaata hai, bhadak uthta hai aur unhe dikhane ki baat karta hai ki woh asal mein kya hai. Bandages utarti hain, whiskers, glasses aur aakhir mein naak bhi. Bar ke customers, darr se jam kar, dekhte hain ki kapde khade hain aur collar ke upar kuch nahi hai.

Constable Mr Jaffers ko hairaani hoti hai ki woh ek bina sir wale aadmi ko arrest kar rahe hain, lekin duty to duty hai: magistrate ke warrant mein isi insaan ka naam hai, aur usmein sir ke baare mein kuch nahi likha. Arrest ek aise aadmi ke saath kushti ban jaata hai jo thoda-thoda karke gayab ho raha hai. Griffin jo bhi kapda phaad kar utaarta hai, pakadne ke liye usmein utna hi kam bachta hai, aur jaldi hi Jaffers khaali hawa se jooj rahe hote hain. Jo bhi beech mein aata hai use ek invisible mukka padta hai. Jaffers behosh ho jaate hain. “Hold him!” ki cheekhon ke beech Griffin chhoot kar nikal jaata hai, aur koi nahi bata sakta ki kis taraf.

Mrs Hall ne apne lodger ko ek ajeeb, eccentric scientist maan liya. Unhe aisa kyun laga?
Answer dekho

Answer (D) Use apne kaam ke liye solitude chahiye thi aur woh ajeeb behave karta tha, aur usne advance mein paise de diye the

Aag use beghar aur nanga kar deti hai, keechad uska raaz khol deta hai, thand use store mein le jaati hai, aur store ka chase use Drury Lane bhejta hai. Iping mein burglary subah hone se pehle hoti hai aur chair wali ghatna usi subah baad mein; Jaffers ke saath ladaai extract ko khatam karti hai.

5.3 Text ke baare mein sochna

Tumhari textbook ke Think about it questions tumse Griffin ko do roles mein judge karne ko kehte hain: doosron ke beech rehne wale insaan ke roop mein, aur ek scientist ke roop mein. Is story par board answers mein marks evidence par milte hain. Jab bhi tum koi quality batao, uska koi kaam point karo.

5.3.1 Ek lawless aadmi

Lawless hone ka matlab hai aise behave karna jaise laws, aur doosron ke rights, tum par laagu hi nahi hote. Griffin pehle page se aakhri page tak is description mein fit baithta hai. Dhyaan do ki story aage badhne ke saath uske offences aur bure hote jaate hain, aur har ek uski apni choice hai. Thand aur bhookh se samajh aata hai ki use kapde aur khaana kyun chahiye tha. Lekin unse aag, shopkeeper par hamla ya chori kiye gaye ghar ke kharche ke paise samajh nahi aate.

Table 5.1Story ke order mein Griffin ke offences

6/6Woh constable ko peetta hai aur law se bach nikalta hai.

Fig. 5.3Griffin ke saamne jo bhi problem aati hai, use woh ek aur bure offence se solve karta hai.

Chhe steps ki ek seedhi jo upar left se neeche right ki taraf utarti hai, har step ke bagal mein ek label aur neeche offence ka naam. Step 1: sabse upar wala step, uski discovery, label hai made himself invisible. Step 2: uske neeche wala step, burns his lodgings, arson. Step 3: takes from the store, theft. Step 4: attacks a shopkeeper, assault and robbery. Step 5: raids the clergyman's desk, burglary. Step 6: sabse neeche wala step, fights the constable, assault on the police. Seedhi ke bagal mein neeche ki taraf ek arrow hai, label hai worse each time.

Kya usmein taras khaane laayak kuch hai? Thoda sa. Use thand lagti hai, bhookh lagti hai, uska peecha hota hai, aur woh akela hai, kyunki apna secret woh kisi ko nahi bata sakta. Lekin musibat use kabhi rukkar sochne par majboor nahi karti. Har problem ek naye offence se solve hoti hai, isliye story neeche ki taraf ek fisalan dikhati hai, jo Fig. 5.3 mein dikhaya gaya hai. Isiliye use lawless kehna sahi hai.

5.3.2 Scientist ke roop mein Griffin

Ek scientist ke roop mein Griffin sach mein credit ka haqdaar hai. Usne woh saabit karne ki thaani jise sab impossible maante the, aur experiments ki ek lambi series mein laga raha. Usne aakhri step apni hi body par test karne ki himmat dikhayi. Story ki duniya mein usne woh haasil kiya jo kisi aur ne nahi kiya tha.

Lekin science sirf hoshiyaari nahi hai. Ek achha scientist knowledge ke saath ethics (नैतिकता) bhi jodta hai, yaani yeh samajh ki us knowledge ka use karne mein kya sahi hai aur kya galat. Griffin ke paas pehli cheez bahut hai aur doosri bilkul nahi.

Compare

Scientist Griffin

Khoobiyan

  • Brilliant: impossible ko haasil karta hai
  • Kai experiments mein laga rehta hai
  • Bold: drugs ko khud par test karta hai
  • Original: usse pehle kisi ne nahi kiya

Kamiyan

  • Kabhi consequences ke baare mein nahi sochta
  • Badlaav ke saath jeene ka koi plan nahi
  • Discovery ko apne tak rakhta hai
  • Ise crime aur darr ke liye use karta hai

To hum use kaise judge karein? Ek mahaan dimaag, ek kharab scientist aur ek khatarnaak aadmi. Story warning deti hai ki responsibility ke bina knowledge doosron ko nuksaan pahunchaata hai, aur aakhir mein jaanne wale ko bhi. Extract ke end tak Griffin akela hai, law ko uski talaash hai, aur woh ek baar phir thand se jam raha hai.

5.3.3 Iping ke log

Wells Griffin ke aas-paas aam logon ko rakhte hain, aur unke reactions se story mein bahut mazaa aata hai. Inmein se kisi ka bhi chhota character sketch plan karne ke liye is table ka use karo.

Table 5.2Baaki characters

Unki himmat sach ko saamne le aati hai.

5.3.4 Themes, craft aur title

Theme (विषय-वस्तु) ek bada idea hai jiske baare mein story tumhe sochne par majboor karti hai. Is story mein kai themes hain.

  • Science aur responsibility. Koi discovery utni hi achhi hai jitna use use karne wala insaan. Griffin ki power doosron ko nuksaan pahunchaati hai aur use bhi dukhi karti hai.
  • Bina rok-tok ki power. Griffin ko koi dekh nahi sakta, isliye koi use rok nahi sakta, aur har baar bach nikalne ke saath woh aur berehem hota jaata hai.
  • Crime ka phal nahi milta. Har offence aaj ki problem solve karta hai aur kal ki problem paida karta hai. Woh hamesha thand mein, hamesha bhaagta hua, kabhi shaanti mein nahi.
  • Akelapan. Griffin Iping akela rehne aaya tha, lekin uska secret use sabse kaat deta hai. Uska na koi dost hai, na ghar.
  • Dikhawa aur sachchai. Log jo dekhte hain usi se judge karte hain: bandages, whiskers, hilti hui chair. Sach saamne hote hue bhi chhupa hai.

Wells ise kaise sunaate hain. Story suspense (कौतूहल) se khulti hai: bina jawab ki paheli, bina pairon ke prints. Kuch hi lines mein narrator humein sab kuch samjha deta hai. Uske baad hum story ke logon se zyada jaante hain, aur is gap ko dramatic irony kehte hain. Isse Iping wale scenes padhne ka andaaz badal jaata hai: clergyman chimney check karte hain, Mrs Hall ek “haunted” chair se bhaagti hain, Jaffers ek aadmi ko “with or without his head” arrest karne ko taiyaar hain. Woh hairaan hain; hum mazaa le rahe hain, aur thoda dare hue bhi hain ki Griffin aage kya karega. Fig. 5.4 gap ko khulte aur band hote dikhata hai.

3/4Hum Griffin ko imagine karte hain; Mrs Hall spirits ko blame karti hain.

Fig. 5.4Hum secret Iping se bahut pehle jaante hain; yahi gap mazaa aur darr dono deta hai.

Chaar moments mein do rows: arrival, study, chair aur unmasking. Upar wali row reader hai, neeche wali villagers. Step 1, arrival: reader ke circle mein exclamation mark hai, kyunki hum pehle se jaante hain ki Griffin invisible hai, jabki villagers ke circle mein question mark hai; rows ke beech ek bracket ka label hai dramatic irony. Step 2, study: reader ab bhi jaanta hai aur villagers ab bhi uljhe hain. Step 3, chair: wahi gap, aur villagers ab spirits ko blame kar rahe hain. Step 4, unmasking: dono rows mein exclamation mark hai aur bracket band ho jaata hai, label hai gap closes.

Title. Footprints without Feet ek paradox hai: kisi aise ke chhode nishan jo dikh nahi sakta. Yeh ek symbol ki tarah bhi kaam karta hai. Griffin apni body chhupa sakta hai, lekin apne kaamon ke nishan nahi: pavement par keechad, khaali desk, achanak aaya cash, behosh pada constable. Ek invisible aadmi bhi evidence chhod jaata hai.

Yeh bhi dhyaan do ki log Griffin ko hamesha sirf un cheezon ke zariye dekhte hain jo uska hissa nahi hain: keechad, chori ke kapde, theatre ka disguise. Fig. 5.5 dikhata hai ki duniya use kitna dekh sakti hai. Jab bhi woh dikh sakta hai, pakda ja sakta hai, aur jab bhi woh nahi dikhta, woh thand mein aur akela hota hai.

6/7Bhed khula: kapde, jinke upar koi sir nahi.

Fig. 5.5Griffin sirf usi se dikhta hai jo woh pehenta hai ya peeche chhodta hai.

Saat bars wala ek bar chart, neeche none se upar all tak. Step 1, drug ke baad: koi bar nahi, woh poori tarah invisible hai. Step 2, keechad bhare pair: ek chhota bar jiska label prints hai, kyunki sirf uske footprints dikhte hain. Step 3, store mein: poora bar, sir se pair tak kapde. Step 4, chase: kapde phenkne ke baad phir se kuch nahi. Step 5, disguise: phir se poora bar, bandages, glasses, naak, whiskers aur hat. Step 6, bhed khula: ek chhota bar jiska label no head hai, bina chehre ke kapde. Step 7, ladaai: phir se kuch nahi, jab woh kapde utaar kar bhaagta hai.

Practice 5.3: Think about it: answers ke saath

  1. Long answerMediumNCERT Think about it Q1

Kya tum maante ho ki Griffin ko law ki koi izzat nahi thi? Story ke kam se kam teen incidents se apni raay support karo.

    Solution dikhao

Yes. Griffin behaves as if laws were meant only for other people. When his landlord tried to get rid of him, he set the house on fire out of revenge. In a London store he helped himself to clothes, food and a bed without paying. At Drury Lane he struck the shopkeeper from behind and took his money. At Iping he stole the clergyman's housekeeping money, lied to Mrs Hall about an accident and a cheque, and finally beat a constable who held a lawful warrant. His offences grow more violent each time, and he never shows regret. He is truly lawless.

    • Key points: arson out of revenge
    • theft at the store
    • assault and robbery at Drury Lane
    • burglary, lies, attack on the police
    • no regret; offences grow worse
  2. Long answerHardNCERT Think about it Q2

Kya Griffin ek mahaan scientist tha, ek khatarnaak scientist, ya dono? Reasons ke saath apna verdict do.

    Solution dikhao

As a researcher, Griffin is outstanding. Through many patient experiments he achieves what everyone thought impossible, a transparent human body, and he has the courage to test it on himself. But a great scientist also thinks about why and how knowledge should be used. Griffin does not. He keeps his discovery secret, plans nothing for living with it, and uses it only for selfish ends and crime. Invisibility, which might have helped others, makes him a thief and a threat, and leaves him cold, hungry and hunted. So he is a brilliant inventor but not a great scientist, because he lacks responsibility and humanity.

    • Key points: brilliant, persistent, daring
    • no thought for consequences
    • secret and selfish use
    • crime instead of service
    • verdict: genius without ethics
  3. Quick answerEasy

Griffin ke har kaam ko offence ke naam se match karo.

Left mein koi item tap karo, phir right mein uska match.

    Answer dekho
    Answer
    • ghar jalata hai : arson
    • store ka saamaan leta hai : theft
    • ek aadmi ko maarta aur lootta hai : robbery
    • raat mein desk lootta hai : burglary
Arson jaan-boojh kar property mein aag lagana hai; theft saamaan le lena hai; robbery violence ke saath chori hai; burglary chori ke liye kisi jagah mein ghusna hai.
  4. Short answerMedium

Griffin Mrs Hall se jo do jhooth bolta hai unke naam batao, aur batao ki har jhooth woh kyun bolta hai.

    Solution dikhao

First, he says an accident has damaged his face. This explains the bandages and keeps people from looking closely. Second, when his money runs out, he claims a cheque is about to arrive, so that she will not throw him out for not paying.

  5. Quick answerEasy

Clergyman ki study ki talaashi mein koi kyun nahi milta?

    Answer dekho

Answer (B) Chor dikh nahi sakta tha

Invisible Griffin hi chor tha, isliye desk ke neeche ya chimney mein dekhna bekaar tha. Paise sach mein gayab the, aur kisi khidki ka zikr nahi hai.
  6. Short answerMedium

Title Footprints without Feet ko samjhao. Do matlab do.

    Solution dikhao

Literally, it describes the opening: muddy prints appear on a step, but no feet can be seen, because Griffin is invisible. Symbolically, it suggests that even a person who cannot be seen leaves traces of what he does, such as an empty desk and sudden cash, which finally expose him.

5.4 Talk about it: story ke peeche ki science

Talk about it questions story se bahar real science mein le jaate hain, aur Class 10 Science mein light ke baare mein jo padhte ho usse achhe se judte hain. Pehle inhe pairs ya groups mein discuss karo. Neeche ke notes tumhe bahas ke liye facts dete hain.

5.4.1 Ek din ke liye invisible: haan ya na?

Zyadatar log pehle haan kehte hain aur phir apna mann badal lete hain. Nuksaanon ki sabse achhi list khud story hai: Griffin ko thand lagti hai, bhookh lagti hai, woh beghar aur akela hai, aur use sirf disguise mein dekha, ya us par bharosa kiya, ja sakta hai. Faisla karne se pehle dono sides tolo.

Invisibility: paksh aur vipaksh

Mumkin fayde

  • Khatre ya bullying se bachna
  • Jungli jaanwaron ko bina daraaye dekhna
  • Emergency mein logon ko bachana ya unki hifaazat karna
  • Jab chaho poori privacy

Mumkin nuksaan

  • Kapde, khaana aur keechad tumhara raaz khol dete hain
  • Drivers aur cyclists tumhe dekh nahi sakte
  • Koi tumhara chehra ya muskaan nahi dekh sakta
  • Power ka galat use karne ka bada laalach
  • Logon ke liye tum par bharosa karna mushkil hota hai

5.4.2 Forces aur woh cheezein jo hum dekh nahi sakte

Tumhare aas-paas sirf Griffin hi invisible nahi hai. Tum woh magnetism nahi dekh sakte jo compass needle ko ghumata hai, woh gravity nahi jo aam ko zameen par kheenchti hai, ya woh hawa nahi jo balloon bharti hai. Atoms aur zyadatar microbes naked eye ke liye bahut chhote hain. Hamari aankhein light ka sirf ek patla band hi pakadti hain, isliye ultraviolet, infrared, radio waves aur X-rays bina dikhe guzar jaati hain.

Hum jaante hain ki yeh cheezein real hain, usi wajah se jis wajah se ladke jaante the ki seedhiyon par koi hai: hum unke effects dekhte hain. Iron filings magnet ke aas-paas line mein lag jaati hain, hawa mein pinwheel ghoomta hai, microscope bacteria dikhata hai, aur ultraviolet light special ink ko chamka deti hai. Fig. 5.6 yeh chaar clues dikhata hai.

4/4Ultraviolet light ek chhupe nishan ko chamka deti hai.

Fig. 5.6Griffin ke footprints ki tarah, invisible cheezein apne kaam se apna raaz khol deti hain.

Two by two grid mein chaar panels. Step 1: poles N aur S wala ek bar magnet, aur iron filings ghumaavdaar raaston mein line mein lagi hain jo uska field dikhati hain. Step 2: left se aati hawa ki lines aur ghoomta pinwheel, jo chalti hawa dikhata hai. Step 3: microscope se dikhta ek circle, jismein chhoti rod aur ball jaisi shapes hain jinka label microbes hai. Step 4: ek lamp ek card par ultraviolet rays daalta hai, jahan ek chhupa nishan chamakta hai. Har panel invisible cheez ka naam aur use dikhane wala clue batata hai.

Agar tum yeh sab dekh paate to? Hawa Wi-Fi aur mobile signals se bhari dikhti, har fridge magnet ke aas-paas field lines ghoomti dikhtin, aur lunch se pehle hi tumhe apne haathon par germs dikh jaate. Doctors aur engineers ko shaayad yeh pasand aata, lekin hum mein se zyadatar ke liye duniya thakaane wali ho jaati. Ek tarah se hamare limited senses ek filter ki tarah kaam karte hain jo rozmarra ki life ko simple rakhta hai.

Do ladkon ko kaise pata chala ki koi seedhiyon se neeche chal raha hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (C) Unhone uske pairon ka effect dekha: taaze prints

Unhone sirf effect dekha, keechad mein bante prints. Scientists magnetism, hawa aur microbes ko bhi isi tarah detect karte hain, unke kaam se.

5.4.3 Transparent, translucent, opaque

Jab light kisi material se milti hai, to teen cheezein ho sakti hain. Woh absorb ho sakti hai, yaani sokh li jaaye aur heat mein badal jaaye. Woh reflect ya scatter ho sakti hai, yaani ek ya kai directions mein takra kar laut jaaye. Ya woh transmit ho sakti hai, yaani aar-paar jaane di jaaye. Jo material light ko rok deta hai, jaise wood ya eent ki deewaar, woh opaque hai. Jo light ko jaane deta hai par use scatter karta hai, jaise frosted glass ya butter paper, woh translucent hai: tumhe roshni dikhti hai par saaf shapes nahi.

Definition
Transparent

Light ko bahut kam absorb ya scatter karke aar-paar jaane dena, taaki peeche ki cheezein saaf dikhein.

ExampleSaaf window glass, thehra hua paani aur hawa.

Glass aur paani aisa kyun karte hain? Iske do reasons hain. Pehla, glass aur paani ko banane wale particles visible light ki energy absorb nahi karte, isliye light sokhi nahi jaati. Doosra, woh particles barabar faile hote hain, unmein itne bade grains ya gaps nahi hote ki light scatter ho, isliye woh seedhi aage jaati hai. Wood dono tests mein fail hota hai.

Phir bhi tum paani ka glass dekh sakte ho. Hawa se glass ya paani mein jaate waqt light ki speed badalti hai, isliye woh surface par mud jaati hai. Is mudne ko refraction (अपवर्तन) kehte hain. Har surface par thodi light reflect bhi hoti hai, isiliye window mein halke reflections dikhte hain. Koi material light ko kitna modta hai, yeh uske refractive index se naapa jaata hai: hawa ke liye lagbhag 1.0, paani ke liye 1.33 aur glass ke liye lagbhag 1.5. Aas-paas se jitna bada fark, object ko dekhna utna aasaan. Fig. 5.7 chaaron cases ko compare karta hai.

4/4Invisible: light bina badle seedhi aage nikal jaati.

Fig. 5.7Poori tarah gayab hone ke liye body ko light ko hawa se zyada nahi modna chahiye.

Two by two grid mein chaar panels, har panel mein light rays left se aati hain. Step 1, opaque: rays ek wooden block se takra kar ruk jaati hain ya laut jaati hain, aur right side par kuch nahi nikalta. Step 2, translucent: rays frosted glass se guzarti hain lekin kai directions mein nikalti hain, isliye light dhundhli ho jaati hai. Step 3, transparent: rays ek saaf glass slab se guzarti hain, dono surfaces par mudti hain aur thoda side mein khisak kar nikalti hain, saath mein ek chhoti reflected ray bhi hoti hai, isiliye hum glass ko phir bhi dekh paate hain. Step 4, invisible: rays ek dashed outline se bilkul bina mude guzar jaati hain, kyunki uska refractive index hawa jaisa hoga.

5.4.4 Science ya fiction?

Sach mein invisible hone ke liye body ko ek saath do cheezein chahiye hongi: bilkul bhi light absorb na karna, aur light ko theek utna hi modna jitna hawa modti hai. Asli bodies dono mein fail hoti hain. Blood laal dikhta hai kyunki woh light ke kuch colours absorb karta hai, aur bones aur muscles light ko scatter karte hain. Kuch jeev kareeb pahunchte hain. Kai jellyfish, aur Central aur South America ke jungalon ke glass frogs, kuch had tak aar-paar dikhne wale hote hain, lekin tum unhe phir bhi dekh sakte ho.

Ek gehri problem bhi hai jiska zikr invisibility stories shaayad hi karti hain. Dekhne ke liye tumhari aankhon ko light absorb karni padti hai, kyunki aankh ke peeche ka retina light ko pakad kar hi kaam karta hai. Ek poori tarah transparent aankh saari light ko seedha aar-paar jaane deti. Isliye sach mein invisible insaan andha hoga.

To kya story bekaar hai? Bilkul nahi, kyunki science fiction aksar science se aage chalti hai. Apne 1914 ke novel The World Set Free mein khud Wells ne “atomic bombs” imagine kiye the, kisi ke bhi banne se decades pehle. 1945 mein writer Arthur C. Clarke ne suggest kiya ki communication satellites itni oonchai par rakhe jaayein ki woh Earth ke ghoomne ke saath kadam mila kar chalein. Aaj aise satellites poore India mein television aur weather ki tasveerein pahunchaate hain.

Frosted glass light ko jaane deta hai par use dhundhla kar deta hai, isliye woh hai. Wooden darwaaza light ko poori tarah rok deta hai, isliye woh hai.
Answer dekho

Answer (1) translucent, (2) opaque

Translucent materials jo light jaane dete hain use scatter karte hain; opaque materials koi light nahi jaane dete. Transparent materials, jaise saaf glass, use saaf jaane dete hain.

Practice 5.4: Talk about it: answers ke saath

  1. Long answerMediumNCERT Talk about it Q1

Ek goli tumhe hafte mein ek din ke liye invisible bana sakti hai. Kya tum use loge? Faisla karne se pehle do fayde aur do nuksaan batao.

    Solution dikhao

I would not take it. It has advantages: I could slip away from danger or bullying, and I could watch birds and animals without scaring them. But the disadvantages are serious. Like Griffin, I would have to go without clothes to stay hidden, and anything I ate or touched might give me away. Drivers and cyclists could not see me, so even crossing the road would be risky. Most of all, the power would tempt me to do things I would be ashamed of. Griffin's story shows that invisibility can cut a person off from others and bring out the worst in him.

Dono mein se koi bhi faisla marks dilata hai agar achhe se argue kiya gaya ho: do saaf fayde, do saaf nuksaan aur unse nikalta hua faisla.

  2. Short answerMediumNCERT Talk about it Q2

Un cheezon ke baare mein in questions ke answers do jo hum dekh nahi sakte.

    1. Do invisible forces ke naam batao, aur har ek ke hone ko dikhane wala ek effect.

      Solution dikhao

Magnetism: a compass needle turns, and iron filings line up around a magnet. Gravity: a dropped ball falls, and the Moon keeps circling the Earth.

    2. Do aisi cheezon ke naam batao jo hamari aankhon ke liye bahut chhoti ya bahut halki hain, aur har ek ko dikhane wala ek tool.

      Solution dikhao

Bacteria can be seen with a microscope. Infrared (heat) radiation shows up on a thermal camera. Ultraviolet light can be detected because it makes fluorescent ink glow.

    3. Ek tareeka batao jisse daily life badal jaati agar hum aisi cheezein dekh paate.

      Solution dikhao

If we could see germs, we would wash our hands far more carefully and spot dirty surfaces at once. But the sight of microbes everywhere, along with radio signals and field lines, could also make the world crowded and tiring to look at.

  3. Short answerHardNCERT Talk about it Q3

Transparency aur invisibility par in questions ke answers do.

    1. Glass aur paani transparent kyun hote hain?

      Solution dikhao

Their particles do not absorb visible light, and they are spread evenly, with nothing large enough to scatter it. So light passes through them almost unchanged.

    2. Hum glass ki window ko phir bhi kyun dekh paate hain?

      Solution dikhao

Glass bends light (refraction) because its refractive index, about 1.5, differs from that of air, about 1.0. A little light is also reflected at its surfaces.

    3. Sach mein invisible body ko kaun si do conditions poori karni hongi?

      Solution dikhao

It would have to absorb no light and bend light exactly as much as air does, that is, have the same refractive index as air.

    4. Sach mein invisible insaan andha kyun ho sakta hai?

      Solution dikhao

The retina must absorb light in order to see. An eye that let all light through would absorb none, so it could not see.

  4. Quick answerEasy

Butter paper light ko jaane deta hai, lekin uske aar-paar saaf shapes nahi dikhti. Woh hai.

    Answer dekho

    Answer translucent

Translucent material light ko jaane deta hai par use scatter karta hai, isliye uske peeche ki shapes dhundhli dikhti hain.
  5. Quick answerMedium

Lagbhag 1.47 refractive index wali ek glass rod ko alag-alag liquids mein dubaaya jaata hai. Kismein use dekhna sabse mushkil hoga?

    Answer dekho

    Answer (C) sunflower oil (1.47)

Sunflower oil rod se bilkul match karta hai, isliye surface par light nahi mudti. Kerosene kareeb hai, lekin chhota sa fark bhi edges ko halka sa dikha deta hai.
  6. Quick answerEasy

Practice questions answers ke saath (NCERT “Long-answer questions (100–120 words)”)

  1. Long answerMedium

    Griffin ka character sketch likho.

    Solution dikhao

Griffin is a brilliant scientist but a lawless, selfish man. His genius is clear: after many experiments he makes his own body invisible, something no one had done before. He is also bold, testing the drugs on himself. Yet he never thinks about consequences or about using his discovery for good. He is revengeful, burning his landlord's house; dishonest, lying to Mrs Hall about an accident and a cheque; and cruel, striking a shopkeeper from behind. He is hot-tempered, giving away his secret in a fit of rage, and violent, knocking out the constable. In the end he is lonely and hunted. Griffin shows that intelligence without a moral sense makes a person dangerous.

    • Key points: brilliant and bold
    • revengeful (fire)
    • dishonest (lies)
    • cruel and violent (shopkeeper, Jaffers)
    • hot-tempered; ends lonely and hunted
  2. Long answerHard

“Science without values can be dangerous.” Footprints without Feet ke reference ke saath discuss karo.

    Solution dikhao

Griffin's story shows how a great discovery can turn harmful in the wrong hands. He finds a way to make a human body invisible, a feat that might have helped research or medicine. Instead, he uses it only for himself. Invisibility helps him escape after burning a house, steal from a store, rob a shopkeeper and burgle a clergyman. It also lets him terrify the Halls and attack a constable. Because no one can see him, no one can stop him, and he grows more ruthless. Yet the power brings him no happiness: he is cold, hungry, friendless and hunted. Science gives us power; values decide whether that power helps or harms. Every scientist needs both.

    • Key points: a discovery that could have helped
    • used for crime instead
    • no checks, growing ruthlessness
    • no happiness for Griffin
    • knowledge needs values
  3. Long answerMedium

Tum Mrs Hall ho. Jis din tumhare ajeeb guest ka bhed khula, us din shaam ki ek diary entry likho.

    Solution dikhao

Iping Inn, late evening. Dear Diary, what a day! This morning the stranger's door stood open, so my husband and I crept in. The room was empty, yet his clothes lay everywhere. Then something sniffed at my ear, his hat flew into my face and Mother's old chair charged at us! I was sure the room was haunted. Later I demanded answers, and he tore off his bandages, whiskers, glasses and even his nose. There was nothing there, no head at all! Poor Mr Jaffers was knocked senseless trying to arrest him. To think I let such a creature stay under my roof because he paid in advance! I shall never trust a bandaged guest again.

    • Key points: diary format: place/time, Dear Diary
    • first person, past tense, events in order
    • feelings: fear, shock, regret
    • a closing reflection
  4. Long answerHard

Wells story mein humour aur suspense ko kaise milaate hain?

    Solution dikhao

Wells keeps us curious from the first line, when footprints appear on a step with no feet above them. Suspense builds at Iping: the clergyman bursts into an empty study, a hat and chair attack the Halls, and we wait for the moment Griffin is exposed. Yet these scenes are also funny, because we know the secret that the villagers do not. We smile as the clergyman checks the chimney, Mrs Hall blames her mother's chair, and Jaffers insists on arresting a man with no head. This dramatic irony lets us laugh at the confusion while fearing what Griffin will do next. The mix keeps the story light but tense right up to his escape.

    • Key points: mystery opening
    • suspense at Iping
    • comic scenes
    • dramatic irony links both
