9.1 Padhne se pehle
Socho, kisi doosre planet se ek visitor aata hai aur use tumhara school bag mil jaata hai. Andar ek tiffin box, ek geometry box, ek cricket ball aur ek library book hai. Poochne ke liye koi nahi hai, to visitor har cheez ke baare mein kya decide karega? Compass ek weapon jaisa lag sakta hai, aur tiffin box ek chhoti si tijori jaisa. Yeh play isi idea ko comedy mein badal deta hai. Martians books se bhare ek room mein land karte hain aur lagbhag sab kuch galat samajhte hain.
The Book That Saved the Earth door future mein set ek chhota comic play hai. Ek museum mein ek Historian ek ajeeb ghatna ko yaad karti hai aur use humare liye dobara chalati hai, isliye zyaadatar action ek flashback hai (Fig. 9.1). Kyunki yeh stage ke liye likha gaya hai, iska text kahani se alag dikhta hai. Sabse pehle cast list aati hai, action scenes mein baanta gaya hai, aur brackets mein di gayi stage directions actors ko batati hain ki kahan khade hon aur kaise behave karein. In directions ko dhyaan se padho: bahut saara mazaa inhi mein chhupa hai.
4/4Hum Historian ke apne time mein wapas aate hain, jab dono planets dost hain.
Diagram mein do columns hain, left mein saal 2040 aur right mein 2400s. Step 1, Abhi: sirf museum box dikhta hai, jis par Historian ka label hai. Step 2, Flashback: historiscope label wala ek arrow peeche 2040 ki taraf point karta hai, jahan Mars control (Think-Tank aur Noodle) ka box ek dashed voice link se Earth library (Omega, Iota aur Oop) ke box se juda hai. Step 3, Radd: 2040 ke boxes ke neeche ek dashed stamp par likha hai no invasion. Step 4, Wapas: ek arrow wapas right mein ek naye box tak jaata hai, jis par likha hai ki Mars aur Earth ab dost hain.

9.2 Play ke scenes, ek-ek karke
Play mein do scenes hain, jo shuru aur end mein Historian ki baaton ke beech lipte hue hain. Scene 1 museum se Mars ke control room tak jaata hai. Scene 2 us control room aur Earth ki ek library ke beech aata-jaata hai, jahan teen Martian explorers land kar chuke hain. Saat characters aate hain, halaanki unmein se ek, Offstage Voice, sirf sunai deta hai.
Stage directions actor ke point of view se likhi jaati hain. Right ka matlab hai audience ki taraf munh karke khade actor ka right, jo audience ka left hota hai. Down ka matlab hai audience ke zyada paas aur up ka matlab aur peeche. Fig. 9.2 in terms se dikhata hai ki har character kahan khada hai.
3/3Crew library mein phail jaata hai: Omega centre mein, Iota up left mein, Oop right mein. Mars control dikhta rehta hai.
Ek rectangle stage ko dikhata hai, jo dashed lines se peeche aur aage ke do halves mein aur teen columns mein baanta gaya hai. Peeche upstage likha hai, aage downstage, left side par stage right aur right side par stage left, aur neeche ek band mein audience hai. Step 1, Map: sirf labels wala stage. Step 2, Scene 1: aage stage right par Historian ke liye ek circle, aur aage stage left par Think-Tank aur Noodle ke liye squares. Step 3, Scene 2: Historian ja chuki hai; triangles dikhate hain ki Omega centre mein hai, Iota peeche stage left par aur Oop stage right par, jabki Think-Tank aur Noodle wahin rehte hain jahan the.
9.2.1 Scene 1: Museum se Mars tak
Humari guide twenty-fifth century ki ek Historian hai jo ek museum mein twentieth century ke collection ki dekhbhaal karti hai. Uske liye humara zamaana purana itihaas hai, aur woh ise Era of the Book kehti hai: us zamaane ke log lagbhag har subject par books likhte the. Uska bada daava jaldi aa jaata hai. 2040 ke liye plan kiya gaya ek Martian invasion shuru hone se pehle hi rok diya gaya tha, aur uska hero ek book thi. Samjhane ki jagah woh apna historiscope on karti hai, ek projector jo past ko replay karta hai, aur humein dekhne deti hai.
Light Mars Space Control par shift hoti hai, saal 2040. Commander-in-Chief Think-Tank ek box par oonchi jagah baitha hai; uska bada sir ande jaisa hai aur uske robe ka pattern bhi important dikhne ke liye bana hai. Uska apprentice, Noodle, switchboard chalata hai. Think-Tank ki har cheez ego chilla kar batati hai. Har request se pehle Noodle ko jhuk kar bade-bade titles ki ek lambi list bolni padti hai, aur jab woh kuch chhod deta hai, to use phir se shuru karna padta hai. Think-Tank Earth ko ek bewakoof chhota planet kehta hai jis par Mars meherbaani karke raaj karega. Koi bhi kaam shuru karne se pehle woh apne hand mirror se confirm karwata hai ki woh aas-paas ka sabse clever being hai, aur jawab dene mein der hone par use daant deta hai.
Apni reflection ko nihaarte hue woh decide karta hai ki Martians chhote siron wale Earthlings se kahin zyada sundar hain. Woh Noodle se kehta hai ki agar woh apne dimaag ki exercise karta rahe, to ek din uska bhi apne master jaisa balloon brain ho sakta hai. Think-Tank maan leta hai ki bada sir matlab bada dimaag. Baaki play isi belief ko test karta hai. Phir woh Martian space probe se contact karne ka order deta hai, kyunki woh lunch se pehle Earth jeetna chahta hai. Joke scale mein hai: poore planet ko ek snack ki tarah aaram se nigal jaana hai.

9.2.2 Scene 2: Library mein Martians
Scene 2 kuch seconds baad shuru hota hai. Probe land kar chuka hai, aur uske teen members wale crew ne Centerville Public Library mein shelter liya hai, halaanki unmein se kisi ko nahi pata ki library kya hoti hai. Captain Omega card catalogue ki drawers ko dekh kar uljhan mein hai, Lieutenant Iota do hazaar books gin chuki hai, aur Sergeant Oop ek book ko hila raha hai ki shaayad usmein se kuch gire. Mars par Think-Tank dekhne ke liye bade-bade goggles pehenta hai, aur Noodle voice link kholta hai.
Har pehla guess bas ek clue pakadta hai. Iota hazaaron ek jaisi cheezein dekhti hai aur decide karti hai ki yeh jagah zaroor ek storage barn hai. Oop saat galaxies ghoom chuka hai aur usne aisa kuch nahi dekha, isliye woh ek khuli book apne sir par balance karta hai aur jagah ko hat shop declare kar deta hai. Omega namrata se Think-Tank se maamla suljhane ko kehti hai. Woh screen ke saamne pakdi gayi ek book ko dekhta hai aur tark deta hai ki Earthlings hamesha khaate rehte hain, isliye yeh zaroor ek primitive snack stand hai. Book khud ek sandwich hai: do covers bread hain aur pages filling.
Theory test karne ke liye Think-Tank Omega ko ek book khaane ka order deta hai, aur yeh order garam aaloo ki tarah ranks mein neeche khisakta jaata hai. Omega aur Iota dono ek polite bahaana dhoondh kar yeh honour agle member ko de deti hain, jab tak yeh Oop tak nahi pahunchta, jiske neeche koi nahi bacha. Uska ek bite sawaal suljha deta hai. Taareef sunne ke chakkar mein Think-Tank poochta hai ki kya woh delicious nahi tha; Oop farmaabardaari se uske shabdon se sehmat hota hai aur is tarah confirm kar deta hai ki woh bahut bekaar tha, dhool jaisa sookha.
Ab Noodle bolta hai, bahut sambhal kar. Woh ek chhoti si yaad ka zikr karta hai: Earth ki films mein log in cheezon ko khaate nahi the, balki lagta tha ki inka use communicate karne ke liye karte the. Think-Tank turant daava karta hai ki yahi uska agla point tha. Woh announce karta hai ki yeh communication sandwiches hain, isliye crew ko inhe sunna chahiye. Crew books ko apne kaanon se lagata hai aur, zaahir hai, kuch bhi nahi sunta. Noodle phir beech mein aata hai: Earthlings in cheezon ko kholte the aur inhe dekhte the. Ek baar phir Think-Tank idea ko apna bana leta hai, aur books kaanon ki jagah aankhon ke tools ban jaati hain.
6/6Audience ko shuru se pata hai: yeh bas ek book hai.
Page par neeche ki taraf guesses ki ek list badhti hai, sawaal Yeh cheez kya hai? ke neeche, aur left mein ek pill mein guess karne wale ka naam hai. Step 1, Cheez: sirf sawaal aur ek pill jis par book likha hai. Step 2, Crew: Iota storage barn guess karti hai aur Oop hat ki dukaan. Step 3, Khaana: Think-Tank snack stand guess karta hai, phir khaane wala sandwich. Step 4, Kaan: Think-Tank decide karta hai ki book bolti hai aur use sunna chahiye, ek dashed tag ke saath jo batata hai ki idea Noodle hint se aaya. Step 5, Aankhein: Think-Tank decide karta hai ki use dekhna chahiye aur usmein ek code hai, yeh bhi Noodle hint mark kiya gaya hai. Step 6, Sach: neeche ek peela bar kehta hai ki sach yeh hai: yeh bas ek book hai.

9.2.3 Scene 2: “Code” todna
Think-Tank shelf ki sabse badi, sabse rangeen book chunta hai: Mother Goose ki ek badi copy. Crew batata hai ki usmein Earthlings ki pictures hain aur unke bagal mein hazaaron chhote nishaan, jo kisi secret code jaise lagte hain. Martians padh nahi sakte, isliye unhe aam print bhi ek cipher lagta hai. Think-Tank ko fikar hone lagti hai ki shaayad Earthlings utne primitive nahi hain jitna usne socha tha. Noodle use yaad dilata hai ki crew ke paas dimaag tez karne wali vitamin pills hain, aur Think-Tank ise apna brilliant plan bata kar pesh karta hai. Crew ek akdi hui, drill jaisi routine mein pills nigalta hai aur, jaise jaadu se, ab likhai ko decipher kar paata hai.
Woh teen famous nursery rhymes padh kar sunate hain, aur Think-Tank har ek ko secret military intelligence maanta hai (Fig. 9.4):
- Mistress Mary ek ladki ke garden ke baare mein hai jismein bells, shells aur maids ki ek line lagi hai. Think-Tank nateeja nikalta hai ki Earthlings ek saath kheti aur mining karte hain, silver ko fasal ki tarah ugaate hain aur explosives tak ugaate hain (shaayad woh shells ko artillery shells samajh leta hai). Woh invasion fleet ko rukne ke liye kehta hai.
- Hey Diddle Diddle fiddle bajaati billi, chaand ke upar se koodti gaay aur hanste hue kutte ke baare mein bilkul nonsense hai. Think-Tank ke liye yeh saboot hai ki Earth ne apne jaanwaron ko music aur space travel ki training di hai aur apne kutton ko bhi sense of humour diya hai. Space se attack karti millions gaayon ki kalpana karke woh us din ke liye invasion radd kar deta hai.
- Humpty Dumpty ek ande ke baare mein hai jo deewar se gir jaata hai aur phir joda nahi ja sakta. Oop picture upar uthata hai, aur anda bilkul Think-Tank ke apne bahut bade sir jaisa dikhta hai. Woh cheekhta hai ki Earthlings ne use pehchaan liya hai: a great fall wali line ka matlab zaroor yeh hai ki woh use pakad kar Mars par invasion karne ka plan bana rahe hain.
4/4Anda Think-Tank jaisa dikhta hai, isliye use pakde jaane ka darr lagta hai aur woh bhaag jaata hai.
Left mein teen peele cards rhymes ke naam batate hain: Mistress Mary, Hey Diddle Diddle aur Humpty Dumpty. Right mein panic label wala ek lamba khaali meter khada hai. Step 1, Book: sirf teen rhyme cards aur khaali meter. Step 2, Mary: ek arrow reading silver, bomb ugte aur order fleet roko tak jaata hai; meter ek-tihaai bhar jaata hai. Step 3, Diddle: doosri reading, space ke jaanwar, order aaj invasion nahi ke saath; meter do-tihaai bhar jaata hai. Step 4, Humpty: teesri reading, plot: mujhe pakdo, order Mars se bhaago ke saath; meter poora bhar jaata hai.
Panic haavi ho jaata hai.

9.2.4 Historian wala ending
Play wahin khatam hota hai jahan shuru hua tha, Historian ke saath, aur woh apni century se khabar laati hai. Mars aur Earth ab dost hain. Noodle, jis assistant ko koi seriously nahi leta tha, ab Think-Tank ki jagah ruler ban gaya hai. Earth ke teachers ne Martians ko sikhaya hai ki books kis liye hoti hain aur unhe kaise padhte hain, aur Martian capital Marsopolis mein ab ek shaandaar library hai. Aakhri joke end ke liye bachaya gaya hai: ek title hamesha ke liye har Martian reading list se bahar rehta hai, aur woh hai Mother Goose.

9.3 Play ke baare mein sochna
9.3.1 Characters
| Character | Traits aur evidence |
|---|---|
| Think-Tank | Vain, arrogant, foolish, cowardly: lambe titles maangta hai; mirror mein apni taareef karta hai; Noodle ke ideas chura leta hai; ek picture se darr kar bhaag jaata hai |
| Noodle | Humble, observant, tactful, wise: contradict karne ki jagah hints deta hai; films ke facts use karta hai; baad mein Mars ko lead karta hai |
| Captain Omega | Obedient, cautious: jhukti hai aur orders dohraati hai; khaane ka kaam Iota ko de deti hai |
| Lieutenant Iota | Polite on the surface, crafty: achhe manners ko bahaana bana kar kaam Oop ko de deti hai |
| Sergeant Oop | Clumsy, blunt, honest: book ko hat ki tarah pehenta hai; us par bite maarta hai; maanta hai ki uska taste bahut bura hai; rhymes par hansta hai |
| Historian | Warm, witty narrator: play ko frame karti hai aur ending pehle hi bata deti hai |
Think-Tank ek know-all ka portrait hai. Think tank ek asli term hai, experts ke us group ke liye jinhe sochne ke paise milte hain, aur uska sir sach mein bahut bada hai, phir bhi woh bolne se pehle kabhi sochta nahi. Woh ek clue par theory bana leta hai, us par shak karne se mana karta hai aur har correction ko apni beizzati maanta hai. Woh ek bully bhi hai aur, aakhir mein, ek darpok jo sabse pehle apne bachne ki sochta hai. Play ka sabse bada joke yeh hai ki jo universe ke sabse bade dimaag ki shekhi maarta hai, woh chhote bachchon ke liye likhi verses se haar jaata hai.
Noodle Mars ka asli dimaag hai. Informal English mein noodle ka matlab kisi ka sir hota hai, aur yeh bewakoof insaan ke liye ek purana word bhi hai, isliye uska naam bhi uski keemat chhupa leta hai. Usne Earth ki surveyor films study ki hain, yaani uske ideas evidence par tike hain, ego par nahi. Woh humble, patient aur tactful hai, aur woh ek baar bhi nahi kehta ki uska master galat hai. Ending use inaam deti hai: Historian batati hai ki woh Mars ka leader ban gaya.
Omega, Iota aur Oop dikhate hain ki aise ruler ke neeche kya hota hai jisse sawaal nahi kiya ja sakta. Omega har order jhuk kar maanti hai, Iota achhe manners ka use karke ek ganda kaam taal deti hai, aur Oop, seedhi ke sabse neeche, aakhir mein woh kaam karta hai (Fig. 9.5). Unke naam bhi jokes hain. Omega Greek alphabet ka aakhri letter hai, iota uska sabse chhota letter hai aur English mein iska matlab bahut thodi si maatra hota hai, aur Oop “oops” ki shuruaat jaisa sunai deta hai. Oop teeno mein sabse munhphat aur sabse honest hai, isliye use itne laughs milte hain.
Historian woh narrator hai jo play ko frame karti hai. Future se bolte hue woh humare apne time ko purana aur anokha dikhati hai. Kyunki woh shuru mein hi bata deti hai ki invasion fail ho gaya, hum aaram se Martians ki galtiyon ka mazaa le sakte hain.
4/4Noodle ka hint upar jaata hai, aur credit Think-Tank le leta hai.
Left mein upar se neeche chaar boxes hain: sabse upar Think-Tank, phir Captain Omega, Lieutenant Iota aur Sergeant Oop, patli lines se jude hue. Noodle ka box upar right mein hai. Step 1, Ranks: sirf boxes. Step 2, Order: chain mein neeche arrows jaate hain jin par Khao!, Iota ko bhookh aur pehle Sergeant likha hai, jo har bahaana dikhate hain. Step 3, Bite: Oop ke box ka border mota ho jaata hai aur ek label batata hai ki woh bite leta hai aur use bahut sookha paata hai. Step 4, Hint: Noodle se Think-Tank tak ek arrow jaata hai, jis par label hai hint upar, credit boss ka.
Think-Tank aur Noodle
Think-Tank
- Bada sir, thodi si akal
- Ek clue se seedhe nateeje par kood padta hai
- Galat hona accept nahi kar sakta
- Doosron ke ideas ka credit leta hai
- Panic mein bhaagta hai
Noodle
- Chhota rank, asli samajh
- Films se evidence yaad karta hai
- Bina naraaz kiye correct karta hai
- Khushi se doosron ko credit lene deta hai
- Aakhir mein Mars ko lead karta hai
9.3.2 Noodle apne boss ko kaise sambhalta hai
Kisi powerful insaan ko correct karna risky hai, khaaskar aise boss ko jo maanta hai ki woh galti kar hi nahi sakta. Noodle har baar yahi chaar moves use karta hai (Fig. 9.6). Pehle woh taareef karta hai, your Brilliance jaise kisi bade title se shuru karke. Phir woh apne contribution ko chhota batata hai, use ek chhoti, unimportant si information kehta hai. Phir woh ek fact deta hai, opinion nahi: film mein Earthlings ko kya karte dekha gaya tha. Aakhir mein woh Think-Tank ko idea apnane aur use apna bata kar announce karne deta hai. Noodle ko credit milne se zyada sahi result ki parwaah hai.
5/5Galti theek ho jaati hai aur kisi ka pride hurt nahi hota.
Do-by-do grid mein chaar numbered cards har step mein ek-ek karke aate hain, aur aakhir mein ek result bar aata hai. Step 1, Taareef: card 1, Pehle taareef, example “your Brilliance” ke saath. Step 2, Chhota karo: card 2, Idea halka karo, example bas chhota idea ke saath. Step 3, Fact: card 3, Fact batao, example Earthlings ki films ke saath. Step 4, Credit: card 4, Credit do, example idea boss ke naam ke saath. Step 5, Result: neeche ek peela bar kehta hai Galti theek, no offence.
Kya yeh wisdom hai ya sirf chaaploosi? Thoda dono. Yeh tareeka ek vain boss par kaam karta hai aur dheere-dheere crew ko books khaane se unhe padhne tak le aata hai. Yeh proud rulers ke baare mein ek dukh bhara sach bhi dikhata hai: unke aas-paas ke logon ko har sach ek compliment ke andar chhupana padta hai. Ek achha leader correction ka swagat karta hai. Noodle ki jagah tum uski politeness rakh sakte ho, lekin aise guiding questions bhi pooch sakte ho jinse boss khud galti dhoondh le, jaise “What did the films show Earthlings doing with these?”
9.3.3 Humour, irony aur satire
Yeh play ek comedy hai, aur ismein kai tarah ka humour mila hua hai:
- Dramatic irony. Humein pata hai ki “sandwiches” books hain; Martians ko nahi pata. Think-Tank ka har confident statement funny hai kyunki hum saaf dekh sakte hain ki woh kitna galat hai.
- Situational irony. Jo hum expect karte hain, uska ulta hota hai. Planet ko koi encyclopedia ya weapons manual nahi, balki baby rhymes ki ek book bachati hai, aur khud ko genius kehne wala apne humble helper se peeche reh jaata hai.
- Slapstick. Library ke scenes physical comedy se bhare hain: hat ki tarah pehni book, kaagaz ka ek bite, kaanon se lagi books, sabka ek saath pills nigalna, aur cheekhta hua, apna sir pakadta ruler.
- Parody aur wordplay. Mirror wala scene Snow White ki nakal hai. Think-Tank ka Elementary, my dear Omega us line ki goonj hai jo aam taur par Sherlock Holmes se judi maani jaati hai. Think-Tank, Noodle aur Oop joke wale naam hain.
- Nonsense ko sach maan lena. Martians bewakoofi bhari rhymes ko pakke facts ki tarah lete hain. Mazaakiya verses aur Think-Tank ke serious analysis ke beech ka farak hi comedy ka dil hai.
Mazaak ke neeche satire hai. Play un rulers ka mazaak udaata hai jo power ko intelligence samajh lete hain, aur aise systems ka jahan kisi ki himmat nahi hoti ki boss ko bataye ki woh galat hai. Yeh doosron ko sirf isliye primitive kehne ki aadat ka bhi mazaak udaata hai kyunki woh alag hain: Think-Tank Earthlings ke chhote siron ka mazaak udaata hai, phir bhi bachchon ki ek book nahi padh sakta. Aakhir mein, yeh halke se humein bhi chhedta hai. Future ke logon ko humari aadatein utni hi ajeeb lag sakti hain jitni Martians ko ek library lagti hai.
Title kisi mahaan book ke baare mein ek serious adventure ki shuruaat jaisa lagta hai. Asli hero bachchon ki rhymes ka ek collection hai, aur woh Earth ko wisdom se nahi, balki galat samjhe jaane se bachata hai. Bade title aur bewakoof wajah ke beech ka yeh farak ek aur joke hai.
9.3.4 Themes aur message
- Arrogance aur nakli intelligence. Bada sir bada dimaag nahi hota. Think-Tank ka pride use jaldbaazi mein nateeje nikaalne par majboor karta hai, aur pride hi uske girne ki wajah banta hai.
- Humility aur wisdom. Noodle sunta hai, dhyaan se dekhta hai aur modest rehta hai, aur jo humble tha wahi lead karne ke liye upar uthta hai.
- Galat padhna. Jab hum shabdon ko context se bahar misinterpret karte hain aur kabhi check nahi karte, to hum bekaar ke nateejon par pahunchte hain. Asli zindagi mein iska nateeja jhagde, panic ya galat faisle ho sakte hain.
- Andhi obedience. Jab koi boss se sawaal nahi kar sakta, to galtiyan badhti jaati hain aur sabse kamzor member ko keemat chukaani padti hai.
- Books aur reading ki value. Books ek culture ke ideas lekar chalti hain; rhymes bhi unhe likhne wale logon ke baare mein kuch batati hain. Padhna seekhna hi 2040 ke dare hue Martians ko Historian ke time ke friendly Martians mein badalta hai.
- Samajh se shaanti. War to sanyog se tal jaati hai, lekin hamesha ki dosti teaching, reading aur ek library se aati hai.

Practice 9.3: Think about it: answers ke saath
Think-Tank maanta hai ki woh kabhi galat nahi hota, phir bhi Noodle use ek se zyada baar uski galtiyon se door le jaata hai. Noodle ka tareeka do examples ke saath samjhao.
Solution dikhao
Noodle wraps every correction in politeness. He opens with flattering titles, calls his own idea a small or cloudy bit of information and offers only facts he has observed. For example, he says Earthlings used the books to communicate, not to eat, and later that they opened them and looked at them. Each time Think-Tank claims the idea, so his pride is safe and the mistake is fixed.
Maan lo tumhe Think-Tank ke assistant ke roop mein Noodle ki job mil jaati hai. Kya tum uski galtiyon ko bilkul Noodle ki tarah sambhaloge? Samjhao ki tum kya karoge.
Solution dikhao
I would keep Noodle's respectful tone, because a proud boss stops listening the moment he feels insulted. But I would also ask guiding questions, such as what the films showed Earthlings doing, so that Think-Tank reaches the truth himself. In a real emergency, such as a planned invasion, I would state the facts plainly, even at the risk of his anger, because some mistakes are too costly to hint at.
Kuch log kehte hain ki phones, tablets aur e-readers jaldi hi printed books ko gaayab kar denge. Kya tum sehmat ho? Agar printed books poori tarah gaayab ho jaayein, to hum kya kho denge?
Solution dikhao
Screens have certainly changed reading. One phone can hold thousands of books, look up a word instantly and read aloud to someone who cannot see well. Online libraries also reach villages that have no bookshop. Still, I do not think printed books will vanish. A printed book needs no battery, network or charger, and it does not interrupt you with notifications. Many readers find it easier to concentrate on paper, to scribble notes in the margin and to lend a favourite book to a friend. In my view, the two will live side by side, and losing printed books altogether would leave many people, especially those without devices, worse off.
- Key points: e-media ki strengths
- print ki strengths
- ek saaf personal view
- us view ka ek reason
Kai readers kehte hain ki ek achhi book insaan ki sabse wafadaar dost hoti hai. Is view ko support karne wale teen reasons do. (Apni favourite book wala paragraph Section 9.4.4 mein hai.)
Solution dikhao
- A book is always available and never tires of us; we can stop, return and reread whenever we like.
- It takes us to places, times and minds we could never visit in person, so it widens our world.
- It teaches and comforts us: it gives knowledge, advice and company, and asks for nothing in return.
Har character ko us trait se match karo jo use sabse achhe se describe karta hai.
Left mein koi item tap karo, phir right mein uska match.

Answer (D) Nursery rhymes ki ek book Earth ko invasion se bacha leti hai.
Koi expect nahi karega ki baby rhymes ek army ko rok dengi. Baaki options bas descriptions hain, ulta palatne wali baatein nahi.
9.4 Talk about it aur likho
9.4.1 Talk: jab hum galat samajhte hain
Think-Tank teen maasoom rhymes ko teen khatron mein badal deta hai. Woh ek nonsense verse ko news ki tarah padhta hai, ek cartoon ande ko apna portrait samajhta hai aur girne wali ek line ko battle plan maan leta hai. Aam log bhi cheezon ko galat padhte hain, aksar inhi wajahon se: context ki kami, do matlab wala koi word, ya koi darr jo humari nazar ko rang deta hai. Fig. 9.7 Think-Tank ke tareeke ko ek behtar tareeke se compare karta hai.
4/4Context ke baare mein poochne se pata chal jaata ki yeh bas ek rhyme hai.
Upar ek peela box words “a great fall” dikhata hai. Step 1, Shabd: sirf woh box. Step 2, Guess: ek arrow neeche ek grey box tak jaata hai jis par likha hai Guess: plot!. Step 3, Panic: ek arrow neeche left mein Think-Tank ke dashed laal box tak jaata hai, jo koi sawaal nahi poochta, turant act karta hai aur Mars se bhaag jaata hai. Step 4, Check: ek arrow neeche right mein ek hare box tak jaata hai jis par Sahi tareeka label hai, jo kehta hai ki context ki poochh-jaanch karo, aur pata chalta hai ki yeh bas ek rhyme hai.
9.4.2 Talk: kya Martians English bolte hain?
9.4.3 Debate: books aur screens
Historian Era of the Book ki aise baat karti hai jaise woh khatam ho chuka ho. Kya humara zamaana use khatam kar raha hai? Aaj tum phone par padh sakte ho, audiobooks sun sakte ho aur online lessons dekh sakte ho. Phir bhi printed books gaayab nahi hui hain: libraries, bookshops aur school bags ab bhi unse bhare hain. Class debate ki taiyaari ke liye neeche diye comparison ka use karo.
Printed books aur screens
Printed books
- Battery, charger ya network ki zaroorat nahi
- Focus todne wali koi notifications nahi
- Notes likhna aur udhaar dena aasaan
- Shelf par dashakon tak chalti hain
Screens aur e-media
- Ek device mein hazaaron books
- Turant search, zoom aur dictionary
- Audio aur video kuch learners ki madad karte hain
- Aksar sasta, ya online free
9.4.4 Writing: apni favourite book par ek paragraph
Ek achhi book ek patient dost hoti hai. Woh hamesha saath hoti hai, tumse kabhi bore nahi hoti, tumhe aisi jagahon par le jaati hai jahan tum ja nahi sakte aur aise dimaagon se milwaati hai jinse tum kabhi khud nahi mil paoge. Tum jitni baar chaho ruk sakte ho, wapas aa sakte ho aur dobara padh sakte ho. Tumhari textbook kehti hai ki jo book tumhe sabse zyada pasand hai, us par ek paragraph likho. Neeche diya plan use karo, phir model padho.
- Batao ki usne tumhe kya diya
- Ek recommendation ke saath khatam karo
- Use pasand karne ke reasons do
- Batao ki book kis baare mein hai
- Book aur author ka naam lo

Answer (B) Yeh ek stage convention hai taaki audience play ko follow kar sake.
Summary aur key points
- Yeh play ek frame ke andar flashback hai: twenty-fifth century ki ek Historian apne historiscope par 2040 ke events replay karti hai (Section 9.1).
- Stage directions actors ko batati hain ki kahan khade hon aur kaise act karein; right aur left actor ke hote hain, aur down audience ke sabse paas hota hai (Section 9.2).
- Scene 1: Mars ka vain ruler Think-Tank chaaploosi maangta hai aur lunch se pehle Earth par invasion ka plan banata hai (Section 9.2.1).
- Scene 2: ek library mein crew barn aur hats guess karta hai; Think-Tank decide karta hai ki books sandwiches hain, phir sunne ki cheezein, phir dekhne ki (Section 9.2.2).
- Mother Goose ki teen rhymes ko Earth ki power ke signs samajh liya jaata hai; Think-Tank jaisa dikhne wala Humpty Dumpty use bhaga deta hai (Section 9.2.3).
- Sadiyon baad Mars aur Earth dost hain, Noodle Mars ko lead karta hai aur Martians padh sakte hain, lekin Mother Goose kabhi nahi (Section 9.2.4).
- Think-Tank vain, arrogant aur cowardly hai; Noodle humble, tactful aur wise hai; crew andhi obedience dikhata hai (Section 9.3.1).
- Noodle apne boss ko taareef karke, apne idea ko chhota bata kar, facts de kar aur credit de kar correct karta hai (Section 9.3.2).
- Humour dramatic aur situational irony, slapstick, parody aur wordplay se aata hai; play arrogance par satire karta hai (Section 9.3.3).
- Themes: pride ke baad fall, humility mein wisdom, galat padhne ka khatra, andhi obedience aur books ki value (Section 9.3.4).
- Galatfehmiyan tab door hoti hain jab hum poochte aur check karte hain; printed books aur screens, dono ki apni strengths hain (Section 9.4.1, Section 9.4.3).
9.5 Board exam ki practice
Supplementary reader ke liye board papers lagbhag 40–50 words ke short answers aur lagbhag 100–120 words ke long answers maangte hain. Examiners sahi content, play se evidence aur saaf structure dekhte hain. Fig. 9.8 dikhata hai ki long answer ko kaise baantein. Neeche diye extract sets bhi play ko detail mein revise karne mein madad karte hain.
4/415 + 30 + 30 + 25 + 20 = 120 words.
Horizontal bars dikhate hain ki long answer ke har part ko kitne words milte hain. Step 1, Opening: 15 words ka ek bar jis par label hai sawaal ka jawab do. Step 2, Points: Point 1 aur Point 2 ke liye 30-30 words ke do bars, dono par label trait plus evidence, aur Point 3 ke liye 25 words ka ek bar, jis par label hai value ya opinion. Step 3, Closing: 20 words ka ek bar jis par label hai ek line ka saar. Step 4, Total: ek line aur yeh words: kul lagbhag 120 words.

Short-answer sawaal (40–50 words): answers ke saath
Think-Tank ne kaise tark kiya ki books sandwiches hain, aur jab crew ne uska idea test kiya to kya hua?
Solution dikhao
Think-Tank believed Earthlings were always eating, so he took the library for a snack stand. A book's two covers looked like bread with a filling between them. When the order to eat one reached Oop, he bit it, coughed and reported that it was dry and not at all tasty.
- Key points: khaane ke baare mein stereotype
- covers bread jaise, pages filling jaise
- Oop ka bite use galat saabit karta hai
Noodle ne Martian crew ko books ke sach ke kareeb pahunchne mein kaise madad ki?
Solution dikhao
Noodle had watched surveyor films of Earth. He politely pointed out that Earthlings communicated with these objects rather than eating them, and later that they opened them and looked inside. His reminder about the vitamins then let the crew read. Each hint moved them from eating books towards reading them.
- Key points: films se evidence
- communication, phir aankhein
- vitamins se reading tak
Think-Tank ne Hey Diddle Diddle se kya nateeja nikaala, aur usne kaise react kiya?
Solution dikhao
Taking the nonsense rhyme literally, Think-Tank decided that Earthlings had trained their animals in music and space travel: a cat played the fiddle, a cow leapt over the moon and even a dog laughed. Fearing an attack by millions of cows, he called off that day's invasion.
- Key points: rhyme ko literally lena
- space ke liye trained jaanwar
- us din ka invasion radd
Think-Tank ne Mars khaali karne ka faisla kyun kiya?
Solution dikhao
When Oop showed him the picture of Humpty Dumpty, Think-Tank thought the egg was a portrait of his own head. He read the great fall as a plan to capture him and Mars Central Control. In terror, he ordered his own escape and the evacuation of Mars to Alpha Centauri.
- Key points: Humpty uske jaisa dikhta hai
- fall ko giraftaari samajhna
- panic aur bhaagna
Twenty-fifth century tak Earth aur Mars ke rishte kaise badal gaye the?
Solution dikhao
The two planets were back in touch and had become good friends. Noodle now ruled Mars in place of Think-Tank. Earth had shown the Martians that books are for reading, not eating, taught them to read and opened a showpiece library in Marsopolis. Only Mother Goose stays unread.
- Key points: contact aur dosti
- Noodle ke haath mein command
- reading aur ek library
Kya The Book That Saved the Earth play ke liye sahi title hai? Ek reason do.
Solution dikhao
Yes. The whole play builds towards one book, Mother Goose, stopping a Martian invasion. The title is also ironic: it sounds grand, yet the book saves Earth not through wisdom but because Think-Tank misreads its silly rhymes. This surprise is the heart of the comedy.
- Key points: main ghatna
- Mother Goose invasion rok deti hai
- title ironic hai
Practice questions answers ke saath (NCERT “Long-answer sawaal (100–120 words)”)
Think-Tank ka character sketch likho.
Solution dikhao
Think-Tank, the ruler of Mars, is a comic portrait of a vain and arrogant leader. He insists on a long list of grand titles and asks his mirror to confirm that he is the cleverest being alive. He looks down on Earthlings as ugly and primitive and plans to conquer them before lunch. Though he calls himself a genius, he is foolish: he jumps to conclusions, mistaking books for sandwiches and rhymes for military secrets. He cannot bear to be wrong and steals Noodle's ideas. Finally, he proves a coward, fleeing his own planet at the sight of Humpty Dumpty. He shows that a big head does not make a wise mind.
- Key points: vain
- Earth ke prati arrogant
- foolish, jaldi nateeje nikaal leta hai
- credit le leta hai
- cowardly
“A humble, thoughtful person can achieve more than a proud and powerful one.” Noodle aur Think-Tank ke reference se discuss karo.
Solution dikhao
The play proves this through its two leading Martians. Think-Tank has power, a huge head and a high opinion of himself, but he never checks his ideas. He turns books into sandwiches and rhymes into threats, and finally flees in panic. Noodle, a mere apprentice, is modest and observant. He remembers what the surveyor films showed and gently corrects his master without insulting him, letting Think-Tank take the credit. His hints move the crew from eating books to reading them. In the end the proud ruler disappears, while the humble apprentice becomes the leader of Mars. Quiet wisdom, the play suggests, outlasts loud pride.
- Key points: Think-Tank ka pride aur galtiyan
- Noodle ki humility aur evidence
- tactful hints dena
- nateeja: Noodle Mars ko lead karta hai
Galatfehmiyan bekaar ka panic aur jhagda paida kar sakti hain. Play aur roz ki zindagi ke reference se discuss karo.
Solution dikhao
In the play, misunderstanding drives every event. Think-Tank reads nonsense rhymes as facts: a garden becomes a mine for metals and explosives, a cow over the moon becomes a space army, and Humpty Dumpty's fall becomes a plot against him. Because he never asks or checks, he panics and evacuates an entire planet. In daily life, too, a short text message, a joke or a rumour can be misread, and friends quarrel or families worry for nothing. The play is funny, but its lesson is serious: before reacting, we should check the context, ask questions and consider other meanings. A moment's patience can prevent a great deal of trouble.
- Key points: galat padhi gayi teen rhymes
- check na karne se panic
- real life ka example
- seekh: poocho aur check karo
Tum Noodle ho. Jis shaam invasion radd hota hai, us shaam tum apni diary mein din ki ghatnaon aur apni feelings ke baare mein likhte ho. Woh entry likho.
Solution dikhao
Late evening, 2040. What a day! This morning the Great and Mighty One wanted Earth conquered before lunch. Instead, our crew tried to eat Earth's books and then to listen to them. I hinted, very gently, that Earthlings look at them, and he called it his own idea, as usual. Then the crew read three silly rhymes, and he saw himself in a picture of a falling egg. Now we are packing to leave Mars! I feel sorry for our people and a little ashamed of him. I suspect those books are simply stories. One day I hope Martians will learn to read them properly, and to laugh.
- Key points: diary format (date, first person)
- order mein events
- Noodle ka tact aur uske private shak
- future ke liye ummeed
