8.1 Reflect and Respond: padhne se pehle
Indore ki Class 9 ki ek student ke baare mein socho jo har chhutti apne ghar ke paas wali lake par birds ki photos kheenchne mein bitaati hai. Uska phone kingfishers aur herons se bhara hai, aur woh wildlife photographer banna chahti hai. Uske parents ko paison ki chinta hai, uski teacher planning ki baat karti hain, aur uski best friend bas cheer karti hai. Use kiski advice maanni chahiye? Yeh unit bilkul aise hi moments ke baare mein hai, jab ek young person ke mann mein ek badi aspiration hoti hai aur use tay karna hota hai ki uske saath kya kare.
Is unit mein do texts hain. Pehla ek maa ka apni teenage beti ko likha letter hai, sapne ko follow karne ke baare mein. Doosra ek chhoti si poem hai, goal ki taraf pehla kadam uthaate waqt khud par believe karne ke baare mein. In dono ke saath tum words, grammar, listening, speaking aur do tarah ki writing practise karoge: ek formal email aur ek speech.
Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam aksar kehte the ki asli sapna woh nahi jo hum sote hue dekhte hain. Asli sapna woh hai jo tumhe sone nahi deta, kyunki tum uske baare mein sochna aur uske liye kaam karna rok hi nahi paate. Doosre shabdon mein, sachcha sapna action mein badal jaata hai. Letter padhte waqt yeh idea dhyaan mein rakho.
Sapne ko follow karne ki mehnat uthayein hi kyun? Kuch reasons tumhari help karte hain: sapna direction deta hai, discipline banata hai aur dikhata hai ki tum kis cheez mein achhe ho. Baaki reasons tumse aage tak pahunchte hain, jaisa Fig. 8.1 dikhata hai: jo person ek worthy goal ke peeche bhaagta hai, woh aksar doston ko inspire karta hai, family ko upar uthata hai aur society ki seva karta hai.
3/3Yeh doosron ko inspire bhi kar sakta hai, tumhari family ko lift kar sakta hai aur society ko serve kar sakta hai.
Beech ke ek oval mein question hai: Why follow a dream? Pehle step mein sirf question dikhta hai. Doosre step mein uske upar teen solid boxes aate hain, jin par 'for you' label hai: gives you direction, builds discipline aur shows your talent. Teesre step mein uske neeche teen dashed boxes aate hain, jin par 'for others' label hai: inspires others, lifts your family aur serves society.

8.2 Reading for Meaning: letter
8.2.1 Letter aur uski writer ke baare mein
“Follow That Dream” koi story nahi hai. Yeh ek asli personal letter hai, June 1995 ka, jo ek maa ne apni teenage beti Ming ko likha. Lagta hai Ming ne apni maa ke saath apna ek sapna share kiya tha, aur yeh uska jawab hai. Pehle ise apni textbook mein padho; phir neeche diye notes se check karo ki tumne har idea samajh liya hai.
Personal letter mein parent bina beech mein toke jaane ke, shaanti se aur poori baat keh sakte hain. Dhyaan do ki maa ek guide ke saath-saath ek dost ki tarah bhi likhti hai: woh order dene ke bajaye apni hopes aur disappointments share karti hai.
8.2.2 Letter, ek-ek part karke
Part 1: Saaf haan, aur greatness ki keemat. Maa ki sabse pehli line hi bina kisi doubt ke Ming ke sapne ka saath deti hai. Phir woh samjhati hai ki logon ko sach mein great kya banata hai. Yeh sirf luck ya talent nahi, balki woh effort aur sacrifice hai jo woh lagane ko taiyaar hain. Woh kehti hai ki kisi bhi cheez mein duniya ke best logon mein aane ke liye kam se kam das saal ka focused, single-minded kaam chahiye.
Part 2: Spark se plunge tak. Aage maa un stages ka naksha banati hai jinse ek sapna guzarta hai. Pehle kisi interest ki taraf ek strong khinchaav hota hai. Yeh khinchaav pakka hokar conviction ban jaata hai, yaani ek firm belief ki sapna poora hona hi chahiye. Phir ek samajhdaar dreamer sacrifice ka hisaab lagati hai: saal, paisa aur woh cheezein jo use chhodni padengi. Agar is imaandaar hisaab ke baad bhi aag bujhi nahi, tabhi use poori tarah kood padna chahiye, field chahe jo bhi ho. Maa yeh dikhava nahi karti ki yeh aasaan hoga. Lambi chadhaai par do cheezein sabse zyada help karti hain: kaam se pyaar aur yeh believe karna ki woh sahi hai, aur jab energy kam ho tab final success ko nazar mein rakhna.
Part 3: Koi akele nahi jeetta. Maa film award ceremonies ki misaal deti hai. Stage par har winner logon ki ek lambi list ko thank karta hai. Woh kehti hai ki har success ke peeche supporters ki ek team khadi hoti hai.
Part 4: Kai sapne sapne hi kyun reh jaate hain. Maa maanti hai ki zyaadatar log kabhi wish karne se aage nahi badhte. Kuch log apna sapna ek safe, steady life ke badle chhod dete hain. Kuch ko aise events rok dete hain jo unke control se bahar hote hain. Use Singapore ke woh log yaad aate hain jinke college ke plans Second World War ke dauraan Japanese invasion ne barbaad kar diye, aur woh young log jinhe jaldi kamaana shuru karna pada taaki unke chhote bhai-behen school mein padhte reh sakein. Woh turant yeh bhi kehti hai ki woh Ming ka josh thanda nahi karna chahti. Uski baat bas itni hai: obstacles aur saalon ko imaandaari se tolo, aur agar tumhara belief phir bhi strong hai, to us par action lo.
Part 5: Sapne badal sakte hain. Aakhir mein woh kehti hai ki life hamare sapnon ko naya roop de deti hai, aur jo sapna baad ki life mein janm leta hai woh utni hi izzat ka haqdaar hai jitna bachpan ka sapna. Aise sapnon mein zyada time lag sakta hai aur zyada logon ki help chahiye ho sakti hai. Uski apni misaal wahi book hai jiska hissa yeh letters hain: use publish karwana ek aisa sapna hai jiske peeche woh das saal se lagi hai, aur yeh uski jawaani ka sapna nahi tha. Woh is wish ke saath khatam karti hai ki Ming ka kam se kam ek sapna poora ho, aur bas “Mum” likh kar sign off karti hai.
Fig. 8.2 maa ki advice ko ek pahaadi par chadhne ke safar mein badal deta hai. Har milestone ek stage hai jo woh describe karti hai, aur raaste ke helpers support network ko dikhate hain.
4/4Success tumhare aas-paas ki support team ke saath aati hai.
Ek seedha raasta neeche left se upar right tak ek hari pahaadi par chadhta hai, aur us par ek chhota gol climber hai. Pehle step mein milestones 1 'Passion' aur 2 'Conviction' pahaadi ke neeche dikhte hain. Doosre step mein milestone 3 'Count the cost' aata hai aur climber upar us tak pahunchta hai. Teesre step mein milestones 4 'Plunge in' aur 5 'Chadhte raho' aate hain aur climber top ke paas hai. Aakhri step mein top par ek flag 'Sapna poora' mark karta hai aur raaste ke paas 'Support team' label wale teen chhote circles aate hain.

8.3 Letter ko samajhna
Writer, reader aur tone. Writer ek pyaar karne wali, experienced maa hai; reader uski beti hai, jo adult life ki shuruaat par khadi hai. Tone warm, honest aur encouraging hai. Yeh kabhi preachy nahi hoti: maa Ming ko bas kya karna hai yeh batane ke bajaye apne reasons samjhati hai aur apni life share karti hai.
8.3.1 Themes
- Pehle cost count karo. Commit karne se pehle time, paisa aur sacrifice ko tolna chahiye.
- Perseverance. Raasta chadhaai wala hai; kaam se pyaar aur ummeed tumhe chadhte rehne dete hain.
- Koi akele success nahi paata. Family, teachers aur friends milkar ek support network banate hain.
- Life sapna badal sakti hai. Haalaat ek sapne ko rok sakte hain, aur naya sapna bhi utna hi keemti ho sakta hai.
- Parent ek dost ki tarah. Letter ek aisa rishta dikhata hai jo trust aur khuli baatcheet par bana hai.
8.3.2 Maa kaise convince karti hai
Maa apni advice ko convincing banane ke liye kai techniques use karti hai. Woh Ming se ek question poochti hai ki world-class banne mein kitna time lagta hai, jisse Ming jawab padhne se pehle sochti hai. Woh real examples deti hai: apni teams ko thank karte award winners, woh students jinke plans war ne barbaad kar diye, aur woh young log jinhone apni families ko support karne ke liye school chhod diya. Aakhir mein woh ek personal story sunati hai: ek book publish karne ki apni das saal ki struggle. Personal experience se judi advice ko ignore karna mushkil hota hai.
Sabse badi baat, woh ek balance banaye rakhti hai. Har warning ke saath encouragement bhi hai, isliye Ming supported bhi feel karti hai aur prepared bhi. Fig. 8.3 is balance ko ek taraazu ki tarah dikhata hai.
4/4Dreams can grow jodne par advice balanced ho jaati hai: ummeed bhari, par honest.
'Maa ki advice' title wale balance scale mein left par Encourage label wali ek tokri hai aur right par Caution label wali. Pehle step mein dono tokriyan khaali aur barabar hain. Doosre step mein do blocks, 'Follow it!' aur 'Kaam se pyaar', left tokri mein girte hain aur beam left ki taraf neeche jhuk jaata hai. Teesre step mein teen caution blocks, 'Count the cost', 'Chadhaai' aur 'Adhoore sapne', right tokri bhar dete hain aur beam right ki taraf jhuk jaata hai. Aakhri step mein 'Dreams can grow' left tokri mein judta hai aur beam barabar ho jaata hai: advice balanced hai.
Letter mein dreamers aur achievers
Jinke sapne sapne hi reh jaate hain
- Wish karte hain par kabhi action nahi lete
- Sapne ke bajaye security chunte hain
- Chadhaai steep hote hi haar maan lete hain
- Aise events unhe rok dete hain jin par unka control nahi
Jo achieve karte hain
- Passion ko firm conviction mein badalte hain
- Pehle cost count karte hain, phir poori tarah commit karte hain
- Saalon ki hard work mein bhi lage rehte hain
- Support network ki help lete hain

8.4 Critical Reflection: letter
Extract questions check karte hain ki tum dhyaan se padh sakte ho aur words se aage soch sakte ho. Answer dene se pehle apni textbook mein poora paragraph padho. ‘Why’ questions ke liye text se ek reason do aur phir ek sentence mein apni soch jodo.

Solution dikhao
Walking uphill is slow and tiring, and you cannot stop for long or you slide back. The image tells us that a dream needs steady effort over a long time, with few easy stretches.
Do cheezein batao jo energy kam hone par insaan ko aage badhaati rehti hain.

- Knowing that they are doing work they love and that is right.
- The hope of success waiting at the end.

Solution dikhao
In a maze you often take wrong turns and must find a new way, and hurdles have to be jumped one after another. Together the images show a journey that is both confusing and full of barriers, so it needs patience and planning.
Life mein baad mein bane sapne mein zyada log kyun jude honge?
Solution dikhao
An adult has more responsibilities and a bigger goal, so the dream needs more helpers: family who adjust, colleagues, advisers and others (for a book, editors and publishers). It also takes longer, so more people join along the way.
Is paragraph ki tone ka sabse sahi description hai
Answer dekho
Answer (D) hopeful aur reflective
Woh apni life ko mudkar dekhti hai (reflective) aur ab bhi believe karti hai ki badle hue sapne bhi poore ho sakte hain (hopeful). Ismein koi gussa ya kadwahat nahi hai.
Ming ka apna letter print nahi hua hai. Maa ke reply se andaaza lagao ki Ming ne unhe kya bataya hoga aur woh kis baat se pareshaan rahi hogi.
Solution dikhao
AnswerMing had probably shared a dream or ambition and asked whether she should pursue it.
Ming had probably told her mother about a career or goal she longed for, perhaps an unusual or difficult one, and asked whether she should go for it. She may also have shared her doubts about the cost and effort. The mother’s first line answers that question with a clear yes.
Letter batata hai ki top performers kitne time tak kaam karte hain aur kis tarah ka effort lagate hain. Dono ko short mein samjhao.
Solution dikhao
- At least ten years of focused, single-minded work in that one field.
- Great effort and sacrifice, including time, money and things given up, along with total commitment.
Bahut logon ke sapne kabhi poore kyun nahi hote? Letter se teen reasons do.
Solution dikhao
- They only wish and never take action.
- They choose a safe, secure life instead of the risk of the dream.
- Circumstances such as war or family duty force them to change course.
Achievers, by contrast, weigh the cost, commit fully and keep going through difficulties.
Teen tareeke chuno jinse maa Ming ko apni baat manwaane ki koshish karti hai, aur batao ki har ek kyun kaam karta hai.
Solution dikhao
The mother persuades rather than orders. Early on she asks Ming whether she knows how long it takes to become world-class; the question makes Ming pause and see the size of the task. She then uses examples Ming can picture: film winners thanking whole teams, students whose plans were destroyed by war, and young people who left school to support siblings. These show that success needs help and that circumstances can block a dream. Lastly, she tells her own story of chasing a book for ten years. This proves she is not preaching from a distance: she has lived what she advises, so her words carry weight.
Letter na poori tarah tareef hai, na poori tarah warning. Examples ke saath discuss karo.
Solution dikhao
The letter opens with full encouragement and ends with a loving wish, but the middle is honest about difficulty. She asks Ming to count the cost in years, money and sacrifice, warns that the road is uphill, and admits that many dreams stay dreams. Yet each warning is softened: she says she is not trying to discourage Ming, that the joy of loving one’s work keeps a person going, and that a changed dream is still valuable. The result is advice that neither flatters nor frightens: Ming is supported, but prepared.
Socho ki Ming aaj Pune mein Class 11 ki student hoti. Maa ki advice ke kaunse parts tab bhi uski help karte, aur kyun?
Solution dikhao
Yes, it is still useful. Today there are many new paths, such as design, sport, content creation and start-ups, so passion is easy to find but hard to sustain. Courses and training cost money, so counting the cost is wise. Competition is fierce, so years of focused effort still matter. Many young people still face money problems or family duties, and the letter’s honesty about that is helpful. Finally, careers change quickly, so her point that a dream can change and still be worthy is perhaps even more true now than in 1995.
Apne kisi goal ke baare mein socho. Uske liye tum kya chhodne ko taiyaar ho, aur kya nahi chhodoge? Samjhao.
Solution dikhao
Model answer: My goal is to play hockey for my state. I am ready to give up late nights, some television time and many holiday trips, because practice starts at 6 a.m. I will also spend my pocket money on good shoes. However, I will not give up my studies, because I need a back-up and an education stays with me. I will also not give up sleep or healthy food, because an exhausted player cannot improve. A dream is worth sacrifice, but not one that destroys the rest of your life.
8.5 Vocabulary and Structures in Context
8.5.1 -scape par khatam hone wale words
Letter ke end ke paas maa kisi insaan ke sapnon ki duniya ke liye word dreamscape use karti hai. Ending -scape ek noun ko poore view ke word mein badal deti hai: land se landscape banta hai, sea se seascape. Aise words descriptive writing aur travel writing mein aam hain.
| Word | Matlab | Example |
|---|---|---|
| landscape | kisi land area ka natural nazaara | The bare brown landscape of Spiti amazed us. |
| seascape | samundar ka nazaara, ya uski painting | From the lighthouse we sketched a wide seascape. |
| cityscape | kisi city ki buildings aur streets ka nazaara | At night the cityscape of Mumbai glitters. |
| mindscape | kisi insaan ki soch aur feelings ki andar ki duniya | Her diary opens a window into her mindscape. |
| dreamscape | sapne jaisa scene ya ek imagined duniya | Fog turned the valley into a dreamscape. |
| soundscape | kisi jagah ki saari awaazein jo ek saath sunai deti hain | Whistles and tea sellers fill a station’s soundscape. |

8.5.2 Letter ke expressions
Letter idioms se bhara hai, yaani words ke aise groups jinka matlab har word ke alag matlab se different hota hai. Sapna sach mein tumhare khoon mein aag nahi lagata, aur koi sach mein geeli blanket mein lipta nahi hota! Har expression ko poora ek saath seekho.
| Expression | Matlab | Example |
|---|---|---|
| burn in your blood | itni strong chahat ki woh tumhara hissa lage | Music burned in Ravi’s blood; he practised the tabla daily. |
| an uphill task (or road) | koi mushkil kaam jismein lamba effort lage | Learning Japanese in six months was an uphill task. |
| buoyed up | khush aur ummeed se bhara hua | Buoyed up by her first good marks, Leela began to enjoy maths. |
| wishful thinking | kisi baat par isliye believe karna kyunki tum woh chahte ho, isliye nahi ki uske hone ke chances hain | Thinking a new phone will make you popular is wishful thinking. |
| a wet blanket | aisa insaan jo doosron ka mazaa kharaab kar de | Nobody wanted Ajay on the trip; he moans about everything and is such a wet blanket. |
| course through your veins | poore shareer mein zor se mehsoos hona | Joy coursed through his veins when his name was called. |
Left mein koi item tap karo, phir right mein uska match.

8.5.3 Advice dene wale if-clauses
Maa Ming se kehti hai ki agar obstacles tolne ke baad bhi uska conviction strong hai, to use aage badhkar action lena chahiye. Yeh ek first conditional hai: yeh present ya future ki ek real possibility ki baat karta hai.
- Aam form: If + present simple, will + base verb. If it rains, we will play indoors.
- Advice wala form: If + present simple, imperative. If you feel stuck, ask your teacher.
- If-clause baad mein bhi aa sakta hai, bina comma ke: Call me if you miss the bus.
- If-clause mein kabhi will mat lagao: If it will rain galat hai; If it rains bolo.
3/3Ya advice dene ke liye imperative use karo: ask your teacher.
Do columns ke headings Condition aur Result hain. Pehle step mein sirf condition box aata hai: 'If + present simple', example 'If you feel stuck,' ke saath. Doosre step mein ek arrow result box 'will + verb (a prediction)' tak jaata hai, example 'I will help you.' ke saath. Teesre step mein result box ek dashed box 'imperative (advice)' mein badal jaata hai, example 'ask your teacher.' ke saath, aur ek note kehta hai ki yahan 'will' nahi hai kyunki verb khud advice deta hai.

| Past ability | could + verb | At ten, Nani could swim across the pond. |
| Purpose | so that … could + verb | She saved money so that she could buy a cycle. |
| Possibility (abhi ya baad mein) | could + verb | The parcel could arrive today. |
| Past possibility ya past ke baare mein andaaza | could have + past participle | We could have taken the metro; it was faster. |
| Unreal ya imagined situation | wish / if … could + verb | I wish I could speak five languages. |
| Polite request | Could you … ? | Could you lower the volume, please? |

8.5.5 Sahi verb form chunna
Passage mein har verb ko apne time aur apne subject ke hisaab se fit hona chahiye. Blank bharne se pehle teen questions poocho: Kya yeh general fact hai, past event hai ya future plan? Subject singular hai ya plural? Kya verb se pehle must ya will jaisa koi modal hai?
- General facts aur habits: present simple. A good coach gives feedback. Coaches give feedback.
- Khatam ho chuke past actions: past simple. In 1990, most students learned by copying notes.
- Modal ke baad: base form. Players must wear helmets; they can borrow them.
- Future plans aur predictions: will + base form. Next year the club will hold a quiz.

Chaar-chaar ke groups mein kaam karo. Ek student unusual career goal wala dreamer hai. Baaki teen bante hain: paison ki chinta karne wale parent, dono sides tolne wale teacher ya mentor, aur saath dene wale par practical questions poochne wale friend ya sibling. Hamare example mein dreamer ka goal wildlife photographer banna hai. Fig. 8.5 dikhata hai ki har awaaz kaisi lagti hai.
4/4Friend support deta hai aur ek honest question poochta hai.
Beech mein ek gol table hai jis par 'Ek bada sapna' likha hai, aur uske chaaron taraf chaar role cards dotted lines se jude hain. Pehle step mein upar wala Dreamer card highlight hota hai aur kehta hai 'I must try!'. Doosre step mein right wala Parent card 'Is it safe?' jodta hai. Teesre step mein neeche wala Mentor card 'Make a plan.' jodta hai. Aakhri step mein left wala Friend card 'I'm with you.' jodta hai, aur chaaron awaazein ek saath dikhti hain.

8.7 Writing Task: formal email
Email se tum kisi ko bhi, jiska address ho, typed message bhej sakte ho, aur woh seconds mein pahunch jaata hai. Formal email aise insaan ko jaata hai jise tum personally nahi jaante, jaise koi institute, office ya principal. Yeh polite, clear aur complete hona chahiye, kyunki reader us par action le sakta hai.
- From / To: tumhara email address aur receiver ka address.
- Cc / Bcc: woh log jinhe copy milni chahiye (Bcc copies doosron se chhupi rehti hain). Zaroorat na ho to khaali chhod do.
- Subject: ek chhoti, exact line, jaise Enquiry about the summer workshop.
- Greeting: Dear Sir/Madam, ya Dear Ms Rao,
- Body: apna introduction aur purpose batao; jo details chahiye unke baare mein poocho; interest dikhao; apni request rakho.
- Closing: reader ko thank karo, phir Yours sincerely, aur uske baad apna naam, class ya designation aur contact details.
Formal words aur complete sentences use karo, aur pls, u ya asap jaise short forms bilkul nahi. Paragraphs chhote rakho. Fig. 8.6 layout dikhata hai.
3/4Greeting, phir purpose, details aur request.
Ek khaali email window jiska title 'New message' hai. Pehle step mein header rows From, To aur Cc/Bcc highlight hoti hain. Doosre step mein Subject row, 'Enquiry: summer workshop', highlight hoti hai. Teesre step mein body highlight hoti hai: greeting ke baad Purpose, Details aur Request label wali rows hain. Chaar boxes upar se neeche ek ke neeche ek rakhe hain, har box apne upar wale se patla hai, aur arrows se jude hain. Pehle step mein sirf top box 'Sapna' aata hai, example 'State-level runner' ke saath. Doosre step mein 'Is saal' aata hai, '5 km in 25 minutes' ke saath. Teesre step mein 'Is mahine' aata hai, 'Train 4 days a week' ke saath. Aakhri step mein 'Aaj' aata hai, 'A 20-minute jog' ke saath.
8.9 Reflect and Respond: poem se pehle
Penalty kick, audition ya naye school ke pehle din se theek pehle ka woh pal yaad hai? Dil tez dhadakta hai aur andar se ek awaaz kehti hai, Jahan safe hai, wahin raho. Is part ki poem bilkul usi pal se baat karti hai.
Cheezein abhi jaisi hain; maujooda situation, khaas kar jab log use bina badle rakhna chahte hain.

8.10 Reading for Appreciation: Believe in Yourself
Robert Langley ki “Believe in Yourself” chaar stanzas ki ek chhoti motivational poem hai, har stanza chaar lines ka. Speaker seedhe tumse, yaani reader se, ek badi choice ke pal par baat karta hai. Pehle ise apni textbook mein zor se padho: iski steady beat aur simple, roz ke words par dhyaan do.
8.10.1 Ek-ek stanza karke
Stanza 1: future ke saath akele. Poem match se pehle coach ki pukaar jaisi shuru hoti hai, bas stands khaali hain. Har dekhne wale ko hata kar speaker dikhata hai ki challenge ek insaan aur uske aage aane wali cheez ke beech ek private mulaqaat hai.
Future ek invitation jaisa bhi lag sakta hai aur ek threat jaisa bhi, aur jab tak hum action nahi lete, pakka nahi keh sakte ki kaunsa. Decision ka pal jitna paas aata hai, choice utni hi bhaari lagti hai, yeh har woh insaan jaanta hai jo kabhi ‘Submit’ button par ruk kar hichkichaya ho.
Stanza 3: comfort ka jaal. Yahan speaker honestly batata hai ki log ek hi jagah kyun ruke rehte hain: cheezon ko bina badle chhod dena, yaani status quo, aaraamdeh hai aur humse kuch nahi maangta. Phir stanza mudta hai. Speaker kehta hai ki aaram hamara purpose nahi hai; insaan grow karne ke liye bane hain, aur change ke bina growth nahi ho sakti.
Stanza 4: jawab.
Tum ek aaraamdeh circle mein shuru karte ho jahan kuch nahi badalta, fear ke ek ring se guzarte ho, aur tabhi un zones tak pahunchte ho jahan learning aur growth hoti hai.
4/4Self-belief ke saath tum growth ki taraf badhte rehte ho.
Teen rings ka ek hi centre hai: andar comfort zone, ek dashed fear ring aur ek dotted learning ring, aur bahar right mein word Growth. Pehle step mein ek dot comfort zone ke andar hai, tag 'Stanzas 1, 3: aasaan par atke' ke saath. Doosre step mein dot fear ring mein aa gaya hai, tag 'Stanza 2: hope khinche, fear roke' ke saath. Teesre step mein woh learning ring mein pahunchta hai, tag 'Stanza 4: pehla kadam' ke saath. Aakhri step mein ek arrow use bahar Growth tak le jaata hai, tag 'Vaada: self-belief, on track' ke saath.
8.10.2 Speaker, tone aur message
Speaker. Speaker ko ek aise coach ki tarah socho jo bilkul tumhare bagal mein khada hai, door se dekhne wala koi nahi. Speaker jaanta hai ki woh pal kitna mushkil lagta hai, aur baar-baar aane wala you advice ko personal bana deta hai, jaise woh sirf tumhare liye ho. Maqsad yeh hai ki aage kya hoga, yeh tum tay karo.
Tone aur mood. Poem kabhi daantti nahi; woh reader ka hausla badhati hai.
Pehla kadam hamesha sabse mushkil hota hai, lekin self-belief use possible banata hai.
Left mein koi item tap karo, phir right mein uska match.

8.11 Poet ka craft
8.11.1 Rhyme scheme
Kisi poem ki rhyme scheme nikaalne ke liye pehli line ke aakhri word ko letter a do. Har nayi sound ko naya letter do, aur jab bhi koi sound pichhli kisi line se rhyme kare to wahi letter dohraao. Is poem mein har stanza ki lines 2 aur 4 rhyme karti hain, jabki lines 1 aur 3 nahi. Isliye har stanza mein scheme abcb hai, jaisa Fig. 8.9 dikhata hai. Kyunki rhyme har doosri line par aati hai, poem simple aur steady lagti hai, kadmon ki tarah.
4/4Sirf lines 2 aur 4 rhyme karti hain: abcb.
Chaar columns chaar stanzas ke liye hain, har ek mein uski lines ke liye chaar grey bars. Pehle step mein bars par koi letter nahi hai. Doosre step mein stanza 1 par a, b, c, b label hai, saath mein rhyming pair 'see – be'. Teesre step mein har stanza par isi tarah label hai, pairs 'fear – near', 'quo – grow' aur 'back – track' ke saath. Aakhri step mein har stanza ki doosri aur chauthi bar coloured hai aur ek box kehta hai: Line 2 aur 4 rhyme: abcb.
8.11.2 Imagery, symbols aur metaphor
Imagery aisi language hai jo mann mein ek picture banati hai. Symbol aisi cheez hai jo kisi bade idea ko represent karti hai. Poem chhoti hai, par iski lagbhag har picture ek bada matlab liye hue hai.
| Image ya symbol | Yeh kya suggest karta hai |
|---|---|
| Koi bheed nahi dekh rahi | tum test ka saamna akele karte ho; koi taaliyan tumhe aage nahi le jaayengi |
| Aage kheencha jaana ya peeche dhakela jaana | hope aur fear ke beech ki rassakashi |
| Comfort aur status quo | ek jagah khade rehna; woh safe zone jahan kuch naya nahi hota |
| The future | jo hum abhi dekh nahi sakte; ismein mauke hain par yeh himmat maangta hai |
| The first step | result jaanne se pehle khud par bharosa karna; behtar banne ki shuruaat |
| On track hona | apne goal ki taraf steadily badhna |
Metaphor ek cheez ko aise describe karta hai jaise woh koi doosri cheez ho. Jab poet kehta hai “The first step is the hardest”, to uska matlab seedhi ka step nahi hai. Step kisi bhi change ki bilkul shuruaat ko represent karta hai: pehla lesson, pehli application, pehli koshish. Shuruaat sabse mushkil hoti hai kyunki jab tak sahara dene ke liye koi success nahi hoti, fear aur doubt sabse strong hote hain.
Poem personification bhi use karti hai: future tumhe pull aur push karta lagta hai, jaise woh haathon wala koi insaan ho.
8.11.3 Antithesis
Antithesis do opposite ideas ko ek hi sentence pattern ke do halves mein rakhta hai. Kyunki shapes match karti hain, matlab ka farq turant nazar aata hai. Yeh examples dekho: Easy to start, hard to finish. Quick to judge, slow to forgive. Train hard, play easy.
Poem mein doosra stanza pull you forward ko push you back ke saamne rakhta hai. Dono phrases same pattern follow karte hain (verb + you + direction), lekin verbs aur directions opposite hain. Yeh contrast choice ke pal par hamare andar ki do forces dikhata hai: hope aur fear. Teesra stanza bhi comfort ke aaram ko grow karne ki zaroorat se contrast karta hai.

8.12 Critical Reflection: poem
Poem ke questions mein apne answer ko hamesha ek stanza aur ek device se jodo. Batao ki line ka matlab kya hai, phir yeh ki woh kya suggest karti hai.
Practice 8.12: answers ke saath
Poem ka pehla stanza padho (yeh “Step up to the challenge” se shuru hota hai) aur questions ke answers do.
Tumhe kya lagta hai, poet is stanza mein yeh pakka kyun karta hai ki koi dekh nahi raha?

It suggests that a real challenge is faced alone. There is no applause to push you on, so you must rely on your own will and effort.

Answer future
Yesterday past ka hissa hai, aur tomorrow future ka.
Kisi nayi habit ke baare mein socho jo tumne banane ki koshish ki ho. Uski madad se samjhao ki poet pehle kadam ko sabse mushkil kyun kehta hai.
Solution dikhao
Before we start, fear and doubt are at their strongest and we have no success to prove we can do it. Comfort also pulls us back. Once we begin, there is no turning back and each small success builds confidence. For personal growth, this means the most important moment is the decision to begin, whether it is joining a club, speaking up in class or learning a new skill. Self-belief is what carries us over that first hurdle.
Poem aage ki taraf kheenchne ko peeche ki taraf dhakelne ke saamne rakhti hai. Yeh contrast badhte hue hamare saamne aane wali choices ke baare mein kya batata hai?
Solution dikhao
The antithesis shows that two opposite forces act on us at every big choice: hope, which draws us towards the future, and fear, which drives us back to safety. Personal development is not automatic; it depends on which force we follow. By placing the two side by side, the poet makes the choice sharp and clear and suggests that growth means letting hope, not fear, decide.
Ek friend kehta hai, “Bas self-belief hi kaafi hai.” Kya tum agree karte ho? Apne answer mein poem aur letter dono use karo.
Solution dikhao
Self-belief is necessary but not always enough. It gives the courage to start and the strength to continue after failure, which is the poem’s point. But real success also needs skill, practice, planning, money and sometimes help from others. As the letter in this unit shows, circumstances can block even a strong dream. So the poem’s message is realistic as a starting point: belief opens the door, and hard work, support and planning carry us through it.
Koi aisa pal yaad karo jab tumhe, kisi friend ko ya family member ko kuch naya shuru karna mushkil laga. Poem ka self-belief wala idea us experience par kaise fit hota hai?
Solution dikhao
Model answer: My cousin Farhan stammered and dreaded speaking in public. In Class 8 he signed up for the school debate. Before his first round he nearly withdrew, which is the push back in fear the poem describes. He took the first step anyway, telling himself he had practised enough. He did not win, but he finished his speech, and the next round felt easier. The poem is right: comfort tempted him, the first step was the hardest, and believing in himself kept him on track.
8.13 Vocabulary in Context
8.13.1 English mein use hone wale Latin expressions
Status quo Latin se aaya hai aur iska matlab hai ‘the state in which (things are)’, yaani cheezein jis haal mein hain. English ne aise bahut se Latin expressions udhaar liye hain, aur yeh tumhe newspapers, notices aur textbooks mein milte hain. Achhi printing mein yeh zyaadatar italics mein likhe jaate hain, aur inke short forms mein full stops lagte hain.
| Expression | Matlab | Example |
|---|---|---|
| status quo | maujooda situation | The workers did not want to disturb the status quo. |
| et cetera (etc.) | aur list ki baaki cheezein | Pack pens, pencils, erasers, etc. |
| exempli gratia (e.g.) | jaise; for example | Eat seasonal fruit, e.g. jamun in summer. |
| id est (i.e.) | yaani; doosre shabdon mein | Come at noon, i.e. 12 o’clock. |
| ad hoc | sirf ek kaam ke liye banaya gaya, aksar thode time ke liye | An ad hoc group planned the flood relief. |
| in media res | action ke beech se shuru hona | The film opens in media res, in the middle of a storm. |
| per se | apne aap mein, baaki cheezon se alag | Money is not bad per se. |
| quid pro quo | kuch milne ke badle diya gaya kuch; favours ki adla-badli | I’ll draw your chart if you help with maths: a quid pro quo. |
| vice versa | ulta bhi; doosri taraf se bhi | Teachers learn from students and vice versa. |
| bona fide | genuine; asli | Only bona fide students may use the hostel. |

8.13.2 Rhetorical questions
Iska kaam kisi point par zor dena ya feeling jagaana hai, information ikattha karna nahi.
- Action ke liye push karne ko: How long will we keep ignoring the garbage on our street? (Humein abhi action lena hoga.)
- Fear ko challenge karne ko: What is the worst that can happen if you try? (Kuch khaas nahi: isliye try karo.)
- Kisi obvious sach par zor dene ko: Who doesn’t love a holiday? (Sabko pasand hai.)
3/3Listener mann hi mann jawab deta hai, aur point ko zyada strongly feel karta hai.
Pehle step mein ek box seedha statement dikhata hai: 'We must clean our river now.' Doosre step mein ek arrow ek dashed box tak jaata hai jo wahi point question ki tarah rakhta hai: 'Will we let our river die?' Aakhri step mein ek gol bubble listener ka maun jawab dikhata hai, 'Not a day more!', jo wahi jawab hai jo speaker chahta tha, bina zor se poochhe.
Speakers speeches aur debates mein rhetorical questions use karte hain kyunki yeh audience ko apni taraf kheench lete hain. Ek ya do use karo, zyada nahi, warna tumhari speech quiz jaisi lagegi.

8.14 Listening and Speaking
8.14.1 Listen and Respond
Class mein tum ek performance se pehle do doston ki baatcheet sunoge (transcript teacher wale pages mein hai). Feelings aur advice par dhyaan do: nervous, ready aur sure jaise words batate hain ki har speaker kaisa feel kar raha hai, aur you should ya just remember jaise phrases advice ka signal dete hain. True statements chunte waqt har word check karo: ek word badalne se statement false ho sakta hai.

8.15 Writing Task: speech
Speech sunne ke liye likhi jaati hai. Ismein saaf structure, friendly lekin formal awaaz, aur aisi persuasive tone chahiye jo listeners ko apni taraf kheenche, jaise rhetorical questions se, ya …, don’t we? aur …, isn’t that so? jaise tags se.
- Opening: audience ko greet karo, apna introduction do, kisi question, quotation ya surprising fact se unhe hook karo, aur apna topic batao.
- Body, paragraph 1: tumhara pehla main point, kisi story ya example ke saath.
- Body, paragraph 2: tumhara doosra point, kisi fact ya ek aur example ke saath. moreover aur on the other hand jaise linkers use karo.
- Conclusion: summary do, aisi line se khatam karo jo log yaad rakhein, aur audience ko thank karo.
4/4Sum up karo, ek yaadgaar last line do, thank you bolo.
Chaar blocks upar se neeche ek ke neeche ek rakhe hain, right mein notes ke saath. Pehle step mein sirf Opening block dikhta hai, note 'Greet, phir hook (question ya fact)' ke saath. Doosre step mein 'To begin with…' wala arrow Point 1 tak jaata hai: 'Idea + chhoti kahani'. Teesre step mein 'Moreover…' wala arrow Point 2 tak jaata hai: 'Idea + fact'. Aakhri step mein 'To sum up…' wala arrow Closing block tak jaata hai: 'Summary, dumdaar last line, thank you'.
- ‘Turning Challenges into Opportunities’ ke liye examples: ek student jise science test mein fail hone ke baad revise karte hue experiments se pyaar ho gaya; ek kisaan jisne sookhe ke baad millets ugaana shuru kiya; ek town jisne kachre ke dher ko park bana diya; lockdown jisne bahut logon ko online nayi skills seekhne ke liye push kiya. - Point 1: fear dikhata hai ki koi cheez hamare liye important hai; competition se pehle stage fright ki ek chhoti story.
- Point 2: jo log fear ke bawajood action lete hain woh grow karte hain; jaise koi sportsperson jo injury ke baad wapas aata hai.
- Closing: sum up karo (fear raasta dikhata hai, use raasta rokna nahi chahiye), ek yaadgaar last line do aur thank you bolo.
“Believe in Yourself” ko “Always Believe in Yourself” se compare karo. Unke messages aur styles mein kya milta-julta hai aur kya alag hai?
Solution dikhao
Both poems tell the reader to trust themselves, and both speak directly to you in an encouraging tone. Langley’s poem focuses on one moment, the fear before the first step and the pull of comfort, and builds towards a single message. It uses a regular abcb rhyme, a rhetorical question, a metaphor and antithesis. Hewitt’s poem offers a wider set of reminders: aim high, treat yourself gently, hold on under pressure and stay open to life’s gifts. It has no regular rhyme and reads like friendly advice. Langley’s poem is about starting; Hewitt’s is about how to keep going.
Is unit ke dono texts sapnon aur self-belief ke baare mein hain. Letter kya jodta hai jo poem nahi jodti, aur poem kya jodti hai jo letter nahi jodta?
Solution dikhao
The letter is practical. It talks about the real cost of a dream (years, money, sacrifice), the need for a support network, the circumstances that can block a dream and the way dreams can change. The poem is about the inner moment of choice: the fear, the comfort of the status quo and the courage of the first step. Together they give complete advice. Believe in yourself enough to begin, but count the cost, gather support and be ready for a long, uphill climb.
