NCERT English Class 9, Chapter 2, pp. 33–68 par based original companion text. Yeh NCERT se juda nahi hai aur NCERT ne ise endorse nahi kiya hai.

Yeh unit hunar bhare haathon se kiye gaye kaam ke baare mein hai. Pehle ek chhoti kahani aati hai, ek ladki ki jo apne parivaar ka pot making ka craft seekhna chahti hai, aur kaise woh aakhir mein seekh leti hai. Phir ek poem un tamaam tarah ke workers ko salaam karti hai jo desh ko chalate rehte hain. Dono texts pehle apni textbook mein padho; yeh companion tumhe unhe samajhne, revise karne aur unke saath aane wale language work ki practice karne mein madad karta hai.

2.1 Before You Read: Skills aur Vocations

Apne aas-paas dekho. Ek tailor ne tumhari uniform silai, ek carpenter ne classroom ka darwaaza lagaya, aur ek potter ne woh matka banaya jo May mein paani thanda rakhta hai. Is tarah ka kaam lambi practice se seekha jaata hai aur aksar parivaaron mein peedhi-dar-peedhi aage badhta hai. Aise skill-based kaam ko vocation (व्यवसाय) kehte hain.

Tumhari textbook mein aise chaar workers dikhaye gaye hain: ek basket maker, ek potter, ek handloom weaver aur ek carpenter. Ek partner ke saath apne area ke paanch aur workers ke naam batao, jaise cobbler, mason ya goldsmith.

2.2 Kahani ko samjho: The Pot Maker

"The Pot Maker" Sentila naam ki ek ladki ki chhoti kahani hai, jo apne parivaar ki auraton ki tarah pots banana chahti hai, aur un logon ki bhi jo uske raaste mein aate hain ya uski madad karte hain. Tumhari textbook iska abridged (chhota kiya hua) version do parts mein deti hai. Kahani upar se shaant hai lekin iski ending bahut strong hai, isliye ise dheere padho aur dekho ki Sentila kaise badalti hai.

Setting. Kahani ek pahadi gaon mein hoti hai jahan pot making maaon se betiyon tak pahunchti hai. Clay ek door ki riverbank se aati hai, aur pots khule mein fire kiye jaate hain. Elders ki ek council gaon ke maamle suljhaati hai, aur ek khaas umar ki ladkiyan ek mahila ki dekhrekh mein ek dormitory mein raatein bitaati hain. Naam aur customs ek Naga gaon ki taraf ishaara karte hain, woh duniya jise Temsula Ao achhe se jaanti thi.

6/6Pots ki do rows jo ek hi banane wale ka kaam lagti hain.

Fig. 2.1Kahani ka shape: Sentila ke sapne se pots ki do rows tak, chhe key moments.

Ek line neeche left se ek peak tak chadhti hai aur phir pahaad ki tarah neeche girti hai, aur uske saath stages Beginning, Rising action, Climax aur Ending likhe hain. Step 1 point 1 dikhata hai, ek chhupa sapna. Step 2 point 2 jodta hai, elders Mesoba se sawaal karte hain. Step 3 point 3 jodta hai, maa ke saath ek saal ki naakaami. Step 4 point 4 jodta hai, Onula ka lesson. Step 5 peak par point 5 jodta hai, Sentila akele ek ke baad ek pot banati hai. Step 6 neeche aate raaste par point 6 jodta hai, pots ki do milti-julti rows.

2.2.1 Part I: Ek chhupa sapna

Sentila jab se yaad kar sakti hai, tab se potter banna chahti hai. Uski daadi pots banati thi, aur uski maa Arenla bhi banati hai. Lekin Arenla ne tay kar liya hai ki uski beti weaving karegi. Isliye Sentila apni ichha apne tak rakhti hai, aur jin dinon use ghar par chhoda jaata hai, woh gaon ke sabse achhe potters ke paas jaati hai. Woh apni is utsuk chhoti mehmaan ko dekh kar muskuraate hain, yeh soch kar ki ek-do saal mein iska shauk khatam ho jaayega.

Itni secrecy kyun? Ek raat Sentila ne apni maa ko apne pita Mesoba se kehte suna tha ki pot making kabhi unki beti ko nahi sikhayi jaayegi. Arenla ke kaaran practical hain, aur woh teen groups mein aate hain (Fig. 2.2):

  • Kamar-tod mehnat: clay ke liye riverbank tak lamba safar (woh kehti hai, solah kilometre), bhaari bojh ke saath khadi chadhaai, aur ghanton ki kutaai jo use thaka deti hai.
  • Lambe intezaar ke baad kam kamaai: ek batch taiyaar hone mein mahine lag jaate hain, aur woh sirf kuch rupaye mein bikta hai.
  • Ek behtar option: uski nazar mein weaving zyada kamaati hai, parivaar ko kapde deti hai, saaf-suthri rehti hai aur har mausam mein ghar ke andar chal sakti hai.

Isse Sentila ka mann bilkul nahi badalta. Apni chhupi visits mein woh dekh-dekh kar poora process seekh leti hai. Kahani mein potter's wheel ka koi zikr nahi hai: potters naram clay ke ek lump ko, ek haath uske andar rakh kar, ghumaate hain aur bahar ki shape ek flat spatula se thapthapa kar banate hain, aur Sentila woh lagaataar thap-thap ghanton sun sakti thi. Uske baad finishing, sukhaana aur kiln (भट्ठा) mein firing hoti hai. Firing sabse risky stage hai, kyunki galat garmi ek saath saare pots kharaab kar sakti hai.

5/5Pots ko hay aur sookhe bamboo ke kiln mein fire kiya jaata hai, aur dhyaan se nazar rakhi jaati hai.

Fig. 2.2Kahani ke potters river ki clay ko fired pots mein kaise badalte hain. Aakhri stage par bahut zyada ya bahut kam garmi poora batch kharaab kar deti hai.NCERT Part I mein bataaya gaya process · p. 35

Ek row mein paanch chhoti pictures, arrows se judi hui. 1 Dig: neeche paani wala ek riverbank aur ek basket jismein clay ke do lumps hain. 2 Pound: ek hari bamboo tube jiske andar ek dande se clay kooti ja rahi hai. 3 Shape: ek gol pot jiske side ko lakdi ka paddle thapthapa raha hai. 4 Dry: tez dhoop ke neeche do pots. 5 Fire: pots ke upar hay ka ek dome, neeche aag ki lapten. Har step agla stage poori tarah dikhata hai jabki baad wale stages halke rehte hain.

Arenla apni beti ke gaayab rehne se dhokha nahi khaati, lekin kuch nahi kehti. Jaldi hi ladki ki visits poore gaon mein charcha ka vishay ban jaati hain, aur gossip chinta mein badal jaati hai: agar potters apni hi betiyon ko sikhaana band kar dein, to aane wale saalon mein pots kaun banayega? Elders Mesoba ko safaai dene ke liye bulaate hain. Soch-samajh kar aur izzat ke saath, woh apni patni ka bachaav karta hai. Woh kehta hai ki koi inkaar nahi hua, bas yeh ichha thi ki ladki pehle ek beemari se theek ho jaaye, aur woh vaada karta hai ki ek din Sentila un sab mein sabse achhi potter banegi.

Elders uska jawaab maan lete hain lekin uske saath ghar ek warning bhejte hain. Unki nazar mein, jo craft poore gaon ke kaam aata hai aur uski yaadein sambhaalta hai, woh expert ki milkiyat nahi hota; woh use sirf amaanat ki tarah rakhti hai. Isliye Arenla ko yeh sikhana hi hoga, Sentila ko bhi aur seekhne ke liye taiyaar kisi bhi aur insaan ko bhi. Mesoba ghar jaakar apni patni se is baare mein baat karta hai.

Sentila ghar par pot making ke liye apne pyaar ko secret kyun rakhti hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (D) Usne apni maa ko kehte suna hai ki woh use yeh craft nahi sikhayegi

  1. Short answerEasyCheck Your Understanding I, p. 37

Ab tak jo tumne padha hai, uske hisaab se kya tum pot making ko aasaan kaam kahoge? Kaaran do.

    Solution dikhao

Nahi. Yeh mushkil, dheema aur thakaane wala kaam hai. Clay ko door ki riverbank se khadi dhalaan par upar laana padta hai, der tak kootna padta hai, bade skill se shape dena padta hai, kai din sukhaana padta hai aur lagaataar dhyaan rakh kar fire karna padta hai. Firing mein ek galti poora batch barbaad kar sakti hai, aur mahinon ke kaam ke baad bhi bahut kam kamaai hoti hai.

  2. Short answerMediumCheck Your Understanding II, p. 37

Is point par, kya tumhe lagta hai ki Sentila pot maker banegi? Apna prediction samjhao.

    Solution dikhao

Ek achha prediction hai: haan.

  3. Short answerMediumCheck Your Understanding III, p. 37

Council meeting ke baad, kya Sentila ke parents apna stand badlenge? Ek kaaran do.

    Solution dikhao

Shaayad haan. Mesoba sabke saamne vaada kar chuka hai ki Sentila gaon ke sabse achhe pots banayegi, aur elders ne Arenla ko yaad dilaya hai ki craft sikhaana uska farz hai. Ab dono parents ke paas use seekhne mein madad karne ki wajah bhi hai, aur thoda pressure bhi.

2.2.2 Part II: Craft seekhna

Lessons agle saal shuru hote hain. Pehle Sentila kaam ka bhaari hissa seekhti hai, riverbank par dao (ek bhaari blade) se grey aur laal clay khodne se lekar use bhigone aur shed mein kootne tak. Woh jaldi seekhti hai, aur jald hi uski clay naram aur taiyaar ho jaati hai.

Shape dene par woh atak jaati hai. Lump uske haathon mein tik kar nahi rehta. Arenla kuch nahi kehti; woh apne kone se dekhti rehti hai aur har baar jab beti haar maan leti hai, chupchaap khud pot bana deti hai. Lagbhag poora ek saal aise hi guzar jaata hai. Sentila ki sharm badhti jaati hai, kyunki jo skill use sabse zyada chahiye, wahi use nahi mil raha.

Madad parivaar ke bahar se aati hai. Jab Sentila kaafi badi ho jaati hai, to local custom ke hisaab se use kuch raatein ladkiyon ki ek dormitory mein bitaani hoti hain, jise ek dayalu widow chalati hai jise ladkiyan Onula, yaani 'Aunty', kehti hain. Onula ko Sentila ke ghar ke jhagde ka pata hai aur woh madad karna chahti hai. Use mauka ek shaam milta hai jab baaki ladkiyan ek music programme mein gayi hoti hain aur Sentila akele apni clay nikaalti hai. Onula turant samajh jaati hai ki gadbad kya hai: ladki itni tension mein hai ki kuch bhi theek nahi ho raha, aur aakhir mein be-shape lump uske thake haathon se gir jaata hai.

Onula ka sikhaana simple hai. Woh ladki ko tasalli deti hai, uske saamne ek pot banati hai aur use phir se koshish karne ko kehti hai. Ab shaant mann se Sentila kaamyaab hoti hai, aur uska pot ek baat chhod kar har tarah se achha hai. Onula use batati hai ki mouth theek nahi hai, aur use seekhne ke liye sahi insaan uski apni maa hai.

Agle session mein Sentila apni maa ke haathon ko pehle se kahin zyada dhyaan se dekhti hai, khaaskar har pot ke upar ke paas: woh wahan haath aur spatula kaise pakadti hai, uski thap-thap kaise dheemi hoti hai, aur woh opening ke chaaron taraf clay ka ek patla roll rim ki tarah kaise lagaati hai. Phir, ek dhoop bhari subah, dono jaldi kaam shuru karti hain, kyunki pots ko sookhne ke liye dhoop chahiye aur achhe din kam hote hain. Arenla apna batch jaldi khatam kar leti hai. Yeh keh kar ki uske sir aur kamar mein dard hai, woh kaam Sentila ko saunp deti hai aur shed se chali jaati hai.

Hairaan aur thodi anichha se, Sentila shuru karti hai. Is baar kuch alag hai. Pehla pot pata chalne se pehle hi ban jaata hai, phir agla, phir uske baad wala; uske haath usi tezi aur bharose se chalte hain jo usne apni maa ke haathon mein dekha tha. Jab woh aakhir mein ginti hai, to uski row Arenla ki row se sirf ek pot chhoti hai. Thak kar woh maa ke saath khaana khaane andar jaati hai aur dekhti hai ki Arenla zameen par bejaan padi hai.

Sentila madad ke liye bhaagti hai; gaon wale aate hain aur Mesoba ko bulaya jaata hai. Agli subah, jab uski maa ka shareer ghar se bahar le jaaya jaata hai, Sentila rote hue maafi maangti uske peeche bhaagti hai. Woh chillaati hai ki woh nahi chahti thi ki sab aise ho; skill bas apne aap aa gaya. Shok manaane wale log uljhan mein hain. Sirf Onula ko lagta hai ki in shabdon ke peeche kuch asaadhaaran hai.

Baad mein work shed ke paas se guzarte hue, Onula dekhti hai ki darwaaza poori tarah band nahi hai aur andar jhaankti hai. Wahan din ka kaam rakha hai: Arenla ka batch aur Sentila ka batch, abhi bhi geele, do lines mein. Woh itne perfectly milte hain ki Onula ek banane wale ke pots ko doosre ke pots se alag nahi pehchaan paati, phir bhi use pakka yakeen hai ki yeh saare pots ek hi jode haathon ne nahi banaye. Woh der tak wahan rukti hai, yeh mehsoos karte hue ki usne kuch adbhut dekha hai. Kahani ek chhoti line par khatam hoti hai jo sab kuch keh deti hai: "A new pot maker was born."

  1. Short answerEasyCheck Your Understanding I, p. 41

Sentila ki progress mein Onula kya fark laati hai?

    Solution dikhao

Haan.

  2. Short answerMediumCheck Your Understanding II, p. 41

Sentila apni maa ko kaam karte dekh kar rim banana seekhti hai. Isse uski kaunsi qualities dikhti hain?

    Solution dikhao

Isse dikhta hai ki woh observant, patient aur seekhne ke liye utsuk hai. Woh Onula ki salaah ko gambhirta se leti hai aur chhoti-chhoti details dhyaan se dekhti hai, jaise uski maa spatula kaise pakadti hai, apni rhythm kaise dheemi karti hai aur rim kaise lagaati hai. Woh karne se jitna seekhti hai, utna hi dekh kar bhi seekhti hai.

2.3 Characters, Themes aur Message

Kahani mein bas kuch hi characters hain, aur har ek Sentila ke safar ko alag tarah se shape deta hai (Fig. 2.3).

5/5Onula Sentila ko shaant karti hai aur raah dikhati hai.

Fig. 2.3Sentila ki kahani mein kaun important hai, aur har insaan us par kya asar daalta hai.

Beech mein ek oval mein Sentila hai, jiske baare mein likha hai ki woh pots banana chahti hai. Step 1 use akela dikhata hai. Step 2 use Arenla se jodta hai, uski maa aur ek potter, tag ke saath: wants weaving. Step 3 Mesoba ko jodta hai, uske pita, tag ke saath: speaks for her. Step 4 gaon ke elders, yaani council, ko ek dashed link se jodta hai, tag ke saath: a craft is for all. Step 5 Onula ko jodta hai, aunty aur mentor, tag ke saath: calms, guides.

  • Sentila: passionate, determined aur observant. Woh ek saal ki naakaami ke baad bhi lagi rehti hai, dekh kar seekhti hai, aur itni sensitive hai ki aakhir mein guilt aur dukh dono mehsoos karti hai. Woh chupke se sapne dekhne wali ladki se ek sachchi potter ban jaati hai.
  • Arenla: ek master potter, bhaari kaam aur kam kamaai se thaki hui. Woh apni beti ke liye aasaan zindagi chahti hai. Woh chupchaap apni misaal se sikhati hai, aur aakhri din Sentila ko kaam karne ke liye akela chhod deti hai. Uska pyaar shabdon se zyada kaamon mein dikhta hai.
  • Mesoba: vinamr, izzat dene wala aur parivaar ka rakshak. Woh elders ke saamne samajhdaari bhare jawaab se apne parivaar ka bachaav karta hai aur phir apni patni se baat karta hai.
  • Onula: dayalu, samajhdaar aur baarik nazar wali. Woh turant dekh leti hai ki ladki itni tense hai ki achha kaam nahi kar sakti, aur aakhir mein sirf wahi Sentila ki pukaar ko samajhti hai.
  • Gaon ki council: parampara ki awaaz. Elders maante hain ki community ke crafts aage badhne chahiye, private nahi rakhne chahiye.

2.4 Critical Reflection: Kahani

Kahani par exam questions do tarah ke hote hain. Extract-based questions tumhe ek passage dete hain aur inference, cause and effect, character, word meaning aur writer ki choices test karte hain. Answer-type questions 40–120 words mein samjhaane, describe karne ya apni opinion dene ko kehte hain.

  • Pehle question padho, phir passage, aur un words ko underline karo jo uska jawaab dete hain.
  • Assertion-and-reason question mein check karo ki reason sach mein assertion ko explain karta hai, sirf yeh nahi ki dono sach hain.
  • Word-meaning question mein har option ko sentence mein rakh kar dekho; sahi option matlab ko bana kar rakhta hai.
  • Lambe answer mein ek point banao, kahani ke kisi event se use support karo, aur batao ki woh kya dikhata hai.

Part I ka woh hissa dobara padho jahan Arenla Mesoba ko batati hai ki pot making se use khushi kyun nahi milti. Phir jawaab do.

    1. Assertion: Arenla nahi chahti ki uski beti pot making apnaaye. Woh reason chuno jo ise sabse achhe se explain karta hai.

      Answer dekho

Answer (A) Kaam lamba aur thakaane wala hai, phir bhi usmein bahut kam kamaai hoti hai.

Arenla ki shikaayat poori tarah mehnat bannaam kamaai ke baare mein hai. Woh kabhi apni beti ke talent par shak nahi karti, aur council chahti hai ki craft sikhaaya jaaye.
    2. Arenla weaving ko pot making se behtar bataati hai. Weaving ke favour mein uske do points batao.

      Solution dikhao

Koi bhi do: isse zyada paisa milta hai; isse parivaar ke liye kapda milta hai; ismein gandagi nahi hoti; ise har mausam mein ghar ke andar kiya ja sakta hai; ek shawl mein pots ke ek batch se kam time lagta hai.

    3. Arenla apni kamaai ko pittance kehti hai. Isse pata chalta hai ki paisa

      Answer dekho

Answer (B) a very small amount for so much effort

Pittance ka matlab hai bahut thoda, na-insaafi bhara paisa.
    4. Arenla kamaai ke baare mein ek sawaal poochti hai aur turant khud hi uska jawaab de deti hai. Iska kya effect hota hai?

      Solution dikhao

Yeh ek rhetorical question hai. Yeh uski kadwaahat par zor deta hai: usne mahinon kaam kiya hai, aur jawaab, kuch rupaye, dikhata hai ki kamaai kitni na-insaafi bhari hai. Isse uski shikaayat asli, emotional baatcheet jaisi bhi lagti hai.

Woh kuch asaadhaaran baat ko samajhne ki koshish kar rahi hai. Dono rows ek hi insaan ka kaam lagti hain, jabki use pata hai ki unhe do logon ne banaya hai. Sentila ki ajeeb pukaar ke saath milkar, isse use samajh aata hai ki maa ka skill poori tarah beti tak pahunch gaya hai, theek usi din jab maa ki maut hui.

Elders maante hain ki craft kisi ek insaan ka nahi hota. Yeh soch community ki traditions ke baare mein kya kehti hai?

    Solution dikhao

Iska matlab hai ki tradition saanjhi daulat hai. Yeh kai peedhiyon se badhti hai, sabke kaam aati hai aur logon ki pehchaan ka hissa hai. Isliye jinke paas skill hai, woh sirf uske rakhwaale hain, jinka farz hai ki use aage badhaayein taaki woh unke saath khatam na ho jaaye.

  6. Short answerMediumCritical Reflection II Q6, p. 45

Kahani ki aakhri line uske dukhi ending ko dekhne ka hamaara nazariya kaise badalti hai?

    Solution dikhao

Din ek maut par khatam hota hai, lekin aakhri line ek janm ki baat karti hai. Sentila ek sachchi potter ban gayi hai, isliye uski maa ka skill zinda rehta hai. Yeh line ek tragic ending ko continuity aur ummeed ki ending mein badal deti hai, aur dikhati hai ki craft bacha rehta hai.

  7. Long answerHardCritical Reflection II Q7, p. 45

"A dream needs perseverance to come true." Sentila ke reference mein is par discuss karo (lagbhag 120 words).

    Solution dikhao

Sentila's story shows that wanting something is not enough. As a child she watches the potters in secret, though her mother wants her to weave. When lessons finally begin, she fails at shaping for almost a year and feels ashamed, yet she still practises alone in the dormitory. Even when her clay collapses, she listens to Onula, tries again and then studies her mother's hands. Because she never stops, the skill finally comes to her on the sunny day, and she matches her mother almost pot for pot. Her perseverance turns a childhood wish into a craft that keeps her family's tradition alive.

2.5 Context mein Vocabulary aur Structures

Unit ka yeh hissa crafts aur paise se jude words banata hai, aur teen grammar points sikhata hai: noun clauses, relative clauses aur determiners.

2.5.1 Ek craft ke words

Kisi bhi craft ke words teen groups mein aate hain. Tools ya implements woh hain jinse worker kaam karta hai (with). Raw materials woh hain jinse product banta hai (from). Processes kaam ki actions hain, jo aksar -ing words ki tarah likhe jaate hain. Yahan kahani ki pot making vocabulary isi tarah sort ki gayi hai.

2.5.2 Paise aur rozi-roti ke words

Arenla ki shikaayat paise ke words se bhari hai: uski kamaai ek pittance hai, kuch rupaye mein milti hai, aur uski mehnat ka reward ya return kam hai. Har vocation rozi-roti kamaane ka ek zariya bhi hai, isliye economy ke basic words jaanna kaam aata hai. Inhe unke meanings aur examples ke saath seekho.

2.5.3 Noun clauses

Clause words ka ek group hota hai jiska apna subject aur verb hota hai. Main clause akele ek sentence ki tarah khada ho sakta hai. Subordinate clause nahi ho sakta; woh main clause par depend karta hai. Jab subordinate clause ek noun ka kaam karta hai, yaani subject, object ya complement ka, to woh noun clause hota hai.

Definition
Noun clause

Ek subordinate clause jo sentence mein noun ka kaam karta hai: subject, object ya complement. Yeh aksar that, what, whether, if, why, how, who ya where se shuru hota hai.

ExampleNobody knew why Arenla refused.

  • Subject ki tarah: What Onula said gave Sentila courage.
  • Verb ke object ki tarah: Sentila hoped that she would become a potter.
  • Preposition ke object ki tarah: The elders worried about what would happen to the craft.
  • Complement ki tarah: The trouble was that the clay kept collapsing.

Quick test: clause ki jagah it ya something rakho. Agar sentence phir bhi theek lagta hai (Sentila hoped something), to tumne noun clause dhoondh liya (Fig. 2.4).

3/3Relative clause apne theek pehle wale noun ko describe karta hai.

Fig. 2.4Solid boxes main clauses hain; dashed boxes subordinate clauses hain.NCERT p. 46

Teen example sentences boxes ki tarah bane hain, main clauses ke liye solid boxes aur subordinate clauses ke liye dashed boxes. Step 1: Sentila hoped, uske baad dashed noun clause that she would be a potter, label noun clause as object. Step 2 jodta hai: dashed clause What Onula said, uske baad gave her courage, label noun clause as subject. Step 3 jodta hai: The widow, phir dashed clause who ran the dormitory, phir helped her, aur clause se waapas word widow tak ek curved arrow, label describes widow.

Answer dekho

Answer (D) Whether the pots survive the firing depends on the heat.

Clause whether the pots survive the firing verb depends ka subject hai. Kiln wale sentence mein noun clause object hai; basket wale sentence mein relative clause hai; rain wale sentence mein time ka clause hai.

2.5.4 Relative (adjectival) clauses

Relative clause main clause ke kisi noun ya pronoun ko describe karta hai, bilkul ek adjective ki tarah. Yeh aam taur par us noun ke theek baad aata hai aur ek relative word se shuru hota hai.

Definition
Relative (adjectival) clause

Ek subordinate clause jo kisi noun ya pronoun ko describe karta hai, aur who, whom, whose, which, that, where ya when se shuru hota hai.

ExampleThe riverbank where the clay lies is far away.

  • who logon ke liye, subject ki tarah: The potters who lived by the river were famous.
  • whom logon ke liye, object ki tarah: The widow, whom the girls loved, ran the dormitory.
  • whose possession ke liye: Sentila, whose dream was secret, watched every day.
  • which cheezon ke liye: The kiln, which was made of hay, burned all night.
  • that logon ya cheezon ke liye, bina commas ke: The pot that she made first had a crooked mouth.
  • where jagahon ke liye aur when samay ke liye: She remembered the day when her hands found the rhythm.

Commas important hain. Jo clause sirf extra information jodta hai, woh commas ke beech jaata hai (Arenla, who was a master potter, wanted her daughter to weave). Jo clause batata hai ki kaunsa wala, usmein commas nahi hote (The girl who tried hardest was Sentila).

      Answer
      • (A) clay ka ek core shape karna
      • (C) core ko wax ke dhaagon se dhakna
      • (D) wax par baarik clay ki coating karna
      • (F) mould ko garam karna taaki wax beh kar nikal jaaye
Core, wax, clay coat, heating: phir metal andar daala jaata hai. Wax ko kabhi bake karke sakht nahi kiya jaata, aur core ko kabhi metal mein nahi duboya jaata.
    4. Koi bhi figure kabhi doosre ki exact copy kyun nahi hoti?

      Solution dikhao

Kyunki figure nikaalne ke liye har clay mould tod kar khola jaata hai, isliye har piece ko naya mould chahiye aur woh thoda alag nikalta hai.

  2. ActivityEasy

Padhne wale ke liye script (sirf tab kholo jab tum zor se padh rahe ho).

    Solution dikhao

"Good morning. I make Dhokra figures, the way my grandfather did. It is one of the oldest metal crafts in India. First, I shape a core of clay mixed with rice husk and let it dry. Next, I cover the core with thin threads of wax and press in every detail: eyes, jewellery, the curl of a tail. Then I coat the wax with fine clay, layer after layer, leaving one small opening. When the mould is dry, I heat it. The wax melts and runs out, which is why we call this the lost-wax method. Into the empty space I pour molten brass. When it has cooled, I break the clay shell and polish the figure until it shines. No two of my pieces are ever the same, because every mould is broken."

2.7 Gifts of Grace: Before You Read

Unit ka doosra text ek poem hai, "Gifts of Grace: Honouring Our Vocations". Iska writer anjaan hai (Anonymous). Ise padhne se pehle, workers ke baare mein in riddles se warm up karo, jo is companion ke liye likhi gayi hain. Phir discuss karo ki har worker ek shehar ki zindagi mein kya jodta hai.

Main kaun hoon?

With tape and thread I take your size; a length of cloth becomes a prize. Who am I? A .
Answer dekho

Answer tailor

Tailor kapda naapta, kaatta aur silkar kapde banata hai.

Inmein se har worker rozmarra ki zindagi chalaata rehta hai: unki wajah se hamare paas kapde hain, khaana hai, hum jude hain aur cheezein milti hain. Poem hamein aise logon ko notice karne aur unke kaam ki izzat karne ko kehti hai.

2.8 Appreciation ke liye padho: Poem

Poem poore India ke workers ki ek khushi bhari roll-call hai. Yeh lambi, behti lines mein bina rhyme ke likhi gayi hai, aur nau verse paragraphs mein chhapi hai, jinhe hum yahan stanzas 1–9 kehte hain. Kai readers ko yeh Walt Whitman ki "I Hear America Singing" ki yaad dilaati hai, jo bhi kaam karte hue gaate workers ki list deti hai. Speaker utna yeh describe nahi karta ki woh kya dekhta hai, jitna yeh ki woh kya sunta hai: poora desh kaam ke ek festival jaisa sunaayi deta hai (Fig. 2.6).

3/3Stanza 9: opening waapas aati hai, aur vocations voices ban jaati hain.

Fig. 2.6Poem shuruaat aur ant mein ek hi idea se ghiri hai, aur beech mein workers ki ek list hai.NCERT p. 58

Upar se neeche teen parts. Step 1 stanza 1 ke liye upar ek banner dikhata hai, jahan speaker sunta hai, words I hear Bharat celebrating ke saath. Step 2 stanzas 2 se 8 ke liye workers ka teen-by-teen grid jodta hai: craftspersons, musicians, carpenters, electricians, boatmen, shoemakers, cook, designer aur mason. Step 3 stanza 9 ke liye neeche ek banner jodta hai, work is identity, jo vocations se voices tak ka badlaav dikhata hai.

2.8.1 Stanza by stanza

  • Stanza 1. Speaker subject ka elaan karta hai: "I hear Bharat celebrating" apni kai vocations ko. Kaam ko sound ki tarah imagine kiya gaya hai, aur desh khud gaata hua lagta hai.
  • Stanza 2. Sabse pehle craftspeople aate hain. Weaving, rang aur anginat shades ki imagery textiles, dyeing aur painting ki taraf ishaara karti hai, aur India ki apni vividhta ki taraf bhi. Har banane wala apne craft mein khush hai.
  • Stanza 3. Phir musicians aate hain, jinke stringed instruments un feelings aur ummeedon ko awaaz dete hain jo public jagahon par goonjti hain. Art ko bhi ek vocation ki tarah izzat di gayi hai.
  • Stanza 4. Carpenters ki unki "mathematical precision" ke liye taareef hoti hai. Craft ke liye mazboot haathon ke saath ek tez, naap-tol karne wala dimaag bhi chahiye.
  • Stanza 5. Electricians, din ki taiyaari karte hue khush, woh wiring sambhaalte hain jo hamare gharon ko roshan karti hai. Unka kaam roshni laata hai, sach mein bhi aur zindagi ko behtar banane ke matlab mein bhi, isliye ek modern trade puraane crafts ke saath khada hai.
  • Stanza 6. Boatmen ke din ko kinaare se samundar aur waapas tak dikhaaya gaya hai: fishing, sailing, gaana, aur phir sunaane ke liye kahaniyan. Unke kaam mein risk aur adventure hai, aur yeh storytelling ki ek poori parampara ko khuraak deta hai.
  • Stanza 7. Shoemakers ko apni quality par garv hai. Unke joote har jagah jaate hain jahan log jaate hain, kaam, khel aur jashn mein, aur din ke ant mein unhe surakshit waapas le aate hain.
  • Stanza 8. Cook, designer aur mason, har koi apne music aur rhythm par kaam karta hai, aur har ek ko apne us skill par garv hai jo sirf uska hai.
  • Stanza 9. Poem ka bada idea: insaan ka kaam batata hai ki woh kaun hai. Opening line waapas aati hai, lekin ab speaker voices sunta hai, khud workers ki awaazein.

Mood aur message. Poem shuru se aakhir tak festive lagti hai. Yeh ek cook aur ek carpenter ko bhi utni hi izzat deti hai jitni ek musician ko, aur kehti hai ki har imaandaar vocation desh ke gaane mein ek awaaz jodti hai.

Answer Galat

2.9 Poem ki appreciation

2.9.1 Free verse aur lineation

Poem mein koi regular rhyme scheme aur fixed beat nahi hai, isliye yeh free verse (मुक्त छंद) mein likhi gayi hai. Iski lines ki lambaai bahut alag-alag hai, aur kuch poore sentences ki tarah aage chalti jaati hain. Isse poem natural, excited baatcheet jaisi lagti hai, ya kisi lambi list ke jaap jaisi, jo kabhi na rukne waale vyast kaam ki tasveer ke liye bilkul sahi hai.

Phir bhi ek pattern hai. Zyaadatar stanzas ek hi shape follow karte hain: The + workers ka ek group + ek -ing word, jaise the carpenters celebrating ya the electricians humming. Yeh -ing forms abhi chal rahi actions dikhaate hain, aur ek hi shape ko dohraana (parallelism) lambi list ko ek saath baandh kar rakhta hai.

2.9.2 Speaker, tone aur mood

Speaker ek I hai jo poore desh ko sunta hai. Yeh poet ho sakta hai ya koi bhi garv karne wala nagrik; iska kaam workers ko notice karna aur unki taareef karna hai. Tone, yaani speaker ka attitude, celebratory aur reverential (izzat se bhara) hai. Mood, yaani woh feeling jo poem hamare andar jagaati hai, joyful aur lively hai, ek festival jaisa.

2.9.3 Imagery

Imagery (बिंब) woh language hai jo senses ko appeal karti hai. Yeh poem visual images (jinhe hum mann mein dekh sakte hain) aur, usse bhi zyada, auditory images (jinhe hum sun sakte hain) use karti hai (Fig. 2.7).

4/4Cook ki singing ko delicious kaha gaya hai: taste aur sound mil jaate hain.

Fig. 2.7Poem ki zyaadatar images sounds hain, jo us speaker ke liye bilkul sahi hai jo desh ko sunta hai.NCERT p. 61

Chhote icons ke saath teen column headings: Sight ke liye aankh, Sound ke liye musical note, Taste ke liye ek katori. Step 1 sirf headings dikhata hai. Step 2 sight images jodta hai: colours aur hues, kinaare par jaal, naachte pair. Step 3 sound images jodta hai: galiyon mein lutes, humming, gaate boatmen, mason ki rhythm. Step 4 taste column jodta hai: phrase delicious singing, jiske saath likha hai taste plus sound, senses ka milna.

2.9.4 Metaphor aur personification

Metaphor (रूपक) ek cheez ko aise describe karta hai jaise woh koi doosri cheez ho, bina like ya as ke. Cook ki "delicious singing" ek metaphor hai. Singing ko chakha nahi ja sakta, lekin use delicious kehna batata hai ki cook ka kaam itna achha lagta hai ki uski awaazein, chhank aur kaatne ki khat-khat, ek aise gaane jaisi hain jise hum lagbhag chakh sakte hain. Is tarah senses ko milaana kabhi-kabhi synaesthesia kehlaata hai.

Personification (मानवीकरण) kisi non-human cheez ko insaani qualities deta hai. Bharat khud celebrate karta hai, jaise desh kisi festival mein shaamil ek insaan ho. Aakhri stanza mein ek vocation ki apni awaaz bhi hai, jo poem mein personification ka sabse saaf example hai.

2.9.5 Repetition aur alliteration

Poem lagbhag ek hi line se shuru aur khatam hoti hai. Yeh repetition ek frame ya refrain ki tarah kaam karta hai: isse poem poori aur gaane jaisi lagti hai, aur yeh apne kaam ka jashn manaate poore desh ke central idea par zor deta hai. Aakhir ka chhota sa badlaav, vocations se voices, dikhata hai ki kaam aur worker ek ho gaye hain.

Alliteration (अनुप्रास) paas-paas ke words ki shuruaat mein ek hi consonant sound ka dohraav hai. Pehli line mein saath-saath do v-words suno, boatmen ke sail aur sing karte waqt s-sounds, aur electricians ke wires ke saath work karte waqt w-sounds. Yeh sounds music jodte hain, jo sunne ke baare mein likhi poem ke liye bilkul sahi hai.

2.9.6 Symbolism

Symbol (प्रतीक) woh cheez hai jo kisi bade idea ko represent karti hai. Poem mein har vocation ek job se zyada hai: yeh skill, izzat aur community mein insaan ki jagah ko represent karti hai. Electricians ki roshni progress ki taraf ishaara karti hai, boatmen ki kahaniyan himmat aur yaadon ki taraf, aur hamein ghar le jaane wale joote zindagi ke safar aur apnepan ki taraf. Saath milkar workers India ki unity in diversity ko represent karte hain.

Kya poem ke kisi ek worker ke bina bhi rozmarra ki zindagi aaraam se chal sakti hai? Ek reason ke saath apni raay rakho.

    Solution dikhao

Nahi chal sakti. Har ek ek asli zaroorat poori karta hai: joote, furniture, buildings, khaana, roshni aur machhli in workers se aate hain, jabki musicians aur designers sundarta aur khushi jodte hain. Inmein se kisi ek ke bina bhi rozmarra ki zindagi mushkil ya feeki ho jaayegi.

  5. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II Q5, p. 63

Poem chhote aur bade, dono tarah ke kaam ko izzat deti hai. Kyun? Apne shehar ya gaon ke jaane-pehchaane workers ke examples se apna answer support karo.

    Solution dikhao

The poet believes that all honest work deserves respect, whether it is ancient or modern, grand or humble. In my town, the milkman arrives before sunrise, the electrician restores power after a storm, and the tailor stitches uniforms before school opens. None of them is famous, but our days depend on them. Celebrating every vocation reminds us that dignity comes from skill and service, not from status or salary.

  6. Long answerHardCritical Reflection II Q6, p. 63

Dikhao ki poem ki sound aur sight images rozmarra ke kaam ko kaise sundar banati hain.

    Solution dikhao

Poet aam kaamon ko tasveeron aur music mein badal deta hai. Hum craftspeople ke kaam mein rang aur shades dekhte hain aur boatmen ko kinaare par jaal samet-te dekhte hain. Hum galiyon mein lutes, electricians ki humming, boatmen ki singing aur mason ki rhythm sunte hain. Cook ki singing ko to delicious bhi kaha gaya hai, jo sound aur taste ko milaata hai. Kyunki kaam ko senses ke zariye dikhaya gaya hai, woh boring nahi balki zinda aur khushi bhara lagta hai, aur reader uski kadar karna seekhta hai.

  8. Long answerMedium

Onula ka character sketch likho (lagbhag 100 words).

    Solution dikhao

Onula is the kind, middle-aged widow who looks after the girls' dormitory. She is perceptive: she quickly sees that Sentila's real problem is tension, not lack of talent. She is generous, offering to teach the girl without being asked, and wise, giving one precise tip, to watch how the mouth of a pot is shaped. Above all she understands people. She alone grasps the meaning of Sentila's cry, and in the work shed she recognises the two matching rows as a sign that the craft has passed on. She is the mentor every learner hopes to meet.

  9. Long answerHard

Sentila apne pakke iraade ki wajah se bhi kaamyaab hoti hai aur doosron ki madad ki wajah se bhi. Discuss karo (lagbhag 150 words).

    Solution dikhao

Sentila's determination is the root of her success. She dreams of pot making from childhood, watches the experts in secret, and keeps practising through a year of failure and shame. Yet she does not succeed alone. The village council forces her parents to let her learn. Onula notices her tension, calms her and shows her how, then sends her back to watch her mother. Arenla teaches by example, and on the last day she leaves her daughter alone in the shed, where Sentila finally works without fear. So the story shows that talent and effort grow best when a community supports them. Sentila's will opens the door, and others help her walk through it.

  10. Long answerMedium

"Gifts of Grace" mein imagery aur repetition ke use ki appreciation karte hue ek paragraph likho (lagbhag 120 words).

    Solution dikhao

The poem appeals strongly to the senses. Visual images, such as the craftspeople's colours and the boatmen's nets on the shore, help us picture the workers. Auditory images are even richer: lutes in the streets, humming electricians, singing boatmen and the mason's rhythm make the whole country sound like a festival. The cook's delicious singing even mixes taste and sound. Repetition frames the poem, since the opening line returns at the end, changing vocations to voices. This makes the poem feel complete and song-like and drives home its message that a person's work is their identity. Together these devices make ordinary work seem joyful and worthy of respect.
