1.1 Padhne se pehle: socho aur respond karo

Ek aisa moment yaad karo jab tum koi zaroori cheez padh nahi paaye: kisi anjaan script mein menu, bank ka koi form, ya medicine strip par chhapa chhota text. Unit ek poem ke saath khatam hoti hai jo India ka jashn manati hai.

Shuru mein khud se ek simple question poochho: padhna aur likhna kya kya mumkin banata hai? Neeche wala web badhte hue dekho, phir apna khud ka web banao.

4/4Independence: kisi se madad maange bina apne forms khud sign karna.

Fig. 1.1Padhna aur likhna roz ke kaamon mein madad karta hai, tumhe apni awaaz deta hai aur tumhe independent banata hai.NCERT p. 1

Beech mein ek oval mein question 'Why read and write?' likha hai. Pehle step mein woh akela hai. Doosre step mein left side par roz ke do reasons aate hain: bus board padho aur check bills. Teesre step mein apni baat kehne ke do reasons aate hain: letter likho aur shauk se padho. Aakhri step mein right side par independence ke do reasons aate hain: sign forms aur kisi ki madad nahi.

  • convincing : jis par yakeen ho jaaye
Protagonist central character hota hai; episode ek kisht hai; concentration focused attention hai; convincing reason woh hai jis par tumhe yakeen ho.

1.2 Matlab ke liye padho: Part I

Setting. Kahani kai dashak peeche north Karnataka ke ek gaon mein jaati hai. Narrator khud writer hain, jab woh lagbhag baarah saal ki ladki thin aur apne grandparents ke saath rehti thin. Woh kahani first person mein sunati hain, ek badi ho chuki aurat ki tarah jo apna bachpan yaad kar rahi hai, isliye woh apne chhote roop ko imaandaari se dekh paati hain.

1.2.1 Part I mein kya hota hai

News bus se aati hai. Gaon ki zindagi bus ke timetable par chalti thi. Bus hi post, newspapers aur magazines laati thi, isliye news gaon tak hamesha thodi baasi pahunchti thi: subah ka akhbaar lunch ke baad padha jaata tha, aur weekly magazine ek din der se aati thi. Koi hairaani nahi ki sab us bus ke liye sadak ki taraf dekhte rehte the.

Ek pasandida writer aur ek serial. Har hafte Kannada magazine Karmaveera mein Triveni ke novel Kashi Yatre ka agla part chhapta tha. Triveni ek bahut pasand ki jaane wali writer thin, jo aam logon ke andar ke sangharsh par simple aur bandh kar rakhne wali kahaniyon ke liye jaani jaati thin. Novel ek boodhi aurat ki kahani hai jiski sabse badi ichha Kashi (Varanasi) ki teerth yatra hai, jise kai Hindu sabse pavitra yatra maante hain. Woh kabhi nahi ja paati. Uski bachat ek gareeb anaath ladki ki shaadi mein lag jaati hai, kyunki aakhir mein woh ladki ki khushi ko apni teerth yatra se zyada maanti hai.

Wednesday ki readings. Wednesday magazine ka din tha, aur woh din narrator ki grandmother Krishtakka ka hota tha. Unhe kabhi school jaane ka mauka nahi mila tha, isliye unki granddaughter har nayi kisht zor se padh kar sunati thi aur woh kaam bhool kar baithi har word dhyaan se sunti thin. Unki yaaddaasht itni tez thi ki baad mein woh ek episode lagbhag word for word dobara suna sakti thin. Heroine unhe apni hi parchhaai lagti thi: Avva bhi kabhi Kashi nahi ja paayi thin. Baad mein temple mein woh aur unki saheliyan kahani mein kya hua, is par behas karti thin.

Ek hafta door. Phir yeh routine toot gaya. Agle gaon mein ek shaadi thi, jahan cousins, khatm na hone wala khaana, games the aur koi bada nazar rakhne wala nahi tha. Is wajah se narrator ka do din ka trip ek hafte ki chhutti ban gaya. Ghar lautna ek jhatka tha. Avva, jo har mushkil mein bhi kabhi nahi royi thin, ro rahi thin, aur kaaran nahi bata rahi thin.

Terrace par ek raat. Jawaab us raat der se milna shuru hua.

Fig. 1.2Chhe stations mein kahani. Ise use karke plot ko order mein dobara sunao.

Ek dashed path chhe numbered circles ko jodta hai. Stations 1 se 4 Part I ke hain: late post, weekly readings, hafta door, aur raat ke aansu. Stations 5 aur 6 Part II ke hain: lessons shuru aur Dassara test. Har step mein ek ring agle station par jaati hai, pehle step mein station 1 se aakhri step mein station 6 tak.

  • Letters ke bina yaaddaasht. Avva ek baar sun kar episode dohra sakti hain. Padh na paana aur samajhdaar na hona ek baat nahi hai; unhe bas seekhne ka mauka kabhi nahi mila.
  • Serial mein ek aaina. Avva Kashi Yatre ko itne dhyaan se isliye follow karti hain kyunki uski heroine ki zindagi unki apni zindagi jaisi hai. Yeh yaad rakhna: novel bilkul end mein phir aata hai.
  • Ek strong aurat ke aansu. Narrator hil jaati hai kyunki Avva kabhi roti nahi hain. Writer is surprise se humein batati hain ki kuch serious hua hai.
  • Aadhi raat ko ek life story.

Answer dekho

Answer (A) Unhe uski boodhi heroine mein apni jhalak dikhti thi, jo kabhi Kashi nahi pahunchi.

Avva heroine se khud ko jod paati thin: dono boodhi auratein thin jo kabhi teerth yatra par nahi gayi thin. Kahani mein kahin nahi likha ki woh Triveni se mili thin ya trip plan kar rahi thin.

Apni samajh check karo: Part I: answers ke saath

  1. Quick answerEasyPart I, Check Your Understanding I

Part I ke har cause ko uske effect se match karo.

Left mein koi item tap karo, phir right mein uska match.

    Answer dekho
    Answer
    • Kam aur dheemi buses : Magazine der se aayi
    • Kabhi school nahi gayin : Padhne wale ki zaroorat
    • Heroine mein apni jhalak : Koi episode nahi chhoda
    • Narrator hafte bhar door : Naya episode chhoot gaya
Har effect apne cause se nikalta hai: kharab transport ne post ko late kiya; school na jaane ka matlab tha ki woh padh nahi sakti thin; heroine se milti-julti zindagi ki wajah se woh serial dhyaan se follow karti thin; aur padhne wali ke door hone par naya episode unke liye ek raaz hi raha.
  2. Short answerEasyPart I, Check Your Understanding II

Jab narrator shaadi se ghar lauti, kya woh jo dekha uske liye tayyar thi? Kahani se ek reason do.

    Solution dikhao

AnswerNahi. Avva ko rote dekh kar woh shocked thi.

Nahi. Narrator ne apni grandmother ko sabse mushkil waqt mein bhi kabhi rote nahi dekha tha, isliye aansu ek poora surprise the. Woh ek hafte ki masti ke baad khush lauti thi aur Avva ko strong aur khush-mizaaj maanti thi. Abhi tak usne Avva ki udaasi ko apni gair-maujoodgi se nahi joda tha.

  3. Short answerMediumPart I, Check Your Understanding III

Part II padhne se pehle predict karo: ek baarah saal ki ladki apni grandmother ko padhna-likhna seekhne mein kaise madad kar sakti hai?

    Solution dikhao

Koi bhi samajhdaari wala plan theek hai. Jaise:

    • roz Kannada alphabet ke kuch letters sikhana aur purane letters revise karwana
    • Avva ke copy aur practice karne ke liye letters likhna
    • sentences par jaane se pehle unke saath simple words padhna
    • ek target date rakhna aur pyaar se unka test lena
    • patience rakhna aur unki progress ki taareef karna

1.3 Matlab ke liye padho: Part II

1.3.1 Part II mein kya hota hai

Avva kyun royin. Uljhan mein narrator ne grandmother ka haath pakda aur poochha ki woh kaise madad kar sakti hai. Avva ne maana ki pareshani us hafte ki magazine thi. Akele mein unhone jaana-pehchaana illustration to pehchaan liya, lekin kahani bilkul nahi, kyunki uske paas likhe letters unke liye ek band darwaaza the. Unhone chhape hue lines ko aise chhua jaise unki ungliyan unhe padh lengi. Unhone apni granddaughter ko bulane jaane ka bhi socha tha, jabki padosi se poochhna bahut sharm ki baat lagti thi. Family mein itna aaraam hone ke baawajood, unhone kaha, woh bebas mehsoos kar rahi thin; agar woh apna kaam khud na sambhal sakein to paise ka koi fayda nahi.

Deadline wala faisla. Avva ki udaasi jaldi ek plan mein badal gayi. Agli hi subah se woh Kannada letters seekhengi, aur unhone khud ke liye ek test rakha: Dassara festival ki Saraswati Puja tak woh bina madad ke ek poora novel padhengi. Granddaughter dekh sakti thi ki woh sach mein yeh chahti hain, phir bhi baarah saal ki ladki ko yeh idea mazedaar laga. Safed baalon wali, chashma pehne grandmother, jhurriyon wale haath aur sambhalne ko poori kitchen, aur woh alphabet par wapas? Avva ko bura nahi laga. Muskura kar unhone kaha ki jo insaan kisi achhe goal par tika ho use koi nahi rok sakta, aur seekhne ki koi umar nahi hoti.

For learning there is no age bar.

Krishtakka (Avva), Sudha Murty ki kahani mein

Lessons. To lessons shuru hue, aur aam roles ulat gaye. Student ne sabse zyada mehnat ki: woh zor se padhne ki practice karti, letters copy karti, unhe baar baar dohraati aur tab tak bolti jab tak woh yaad na ho jaayein. Peeche mudkar dekhte hue narrator Avva ko apni sabse pehli student kehti hai, un saikdon students se bahut pehle jinhe woh baad mein Computer Science teacher ke roop mein padhayengi.

Saraswati Puja ke din test. Dassara aaya, aur uske saath test. Narrator ke paas ek surprise tayyar tha: Kashi Yatre, jo ab ek poori book ke roop mein chhap chuka tha, chupke se khareeda hua. Avva ke paas bhi ek surprise tha. Pooja ki jagah par unhone granddaughter ko ek stool par bithaya, use naye frock ke liye kapda diya, aur phir jhuk kar uske pair chhue. Ladki hairaan reh gayi, kyunki riwaaz ulta hai: chhote apne badon ke aage jhukte hain. Avva ne samjhaya. Aaj woh apni granddaughter ka nahi, us teacher ka sammaan kar rahi thin jisne unhe itne pyaar se padhaya tha, aur scriptures kehti hain ki teacher ki izzat karo, chahe teacher ki umar ya gender kuch bhi ho. Badle mein narrator ne Avva ke pair chhue aur novel unhe de diya. Avva ne use khola aur turant title, author aur publisher tak padh kar suna diya. Exam khatam ho gaya tha, aur student top marks ke saath pass ho gayi thin.

3/4Avva apne teacher ke pair chhooti hain, riwaaz ulat jaata hai.

Fig. 1.3Saraswati Puja ke din aam riwaaz ulat jaata hai, kyunki Avva teacher ke role ka sammaan karti hain.

Do circles hain: left mein 62 saal ki Avva aur right mein 12 saal ki narrator. Pehle step mein narrator se Avva ki taraf ek arrow par pair chhoona likha hai: aam riwaaz. Doosre step mein arrow par padhati likha hai, ek book ke saath, aur Avva ke neeche student aur narrator ke neeche teacher labels aate hain. Teesre step mein, Saraswati Puja ke din, arrow ulat jaata hai: Avva apne teacher ke pair chhooti hain. Aakhri step mein ek doosra arrow, izzat lautana, dikhata hai ki narrator badle mein sammaan deti hai, yaani izzat dono taraf behti hai.

1.3.2 Dhyaan dene wale moments

  • Paisa azaadi nahi hai. Avva aaraam se hain, phir bhi dependent mehsoos karti hain. Unke liye independence ka matlab hai khud padh paana.
  • Swabhimaan aur sharm. Woh padosi ke saamne yeh maanne ke bajaay ki unhe padhna nahi aata, intezaar karke rona pasand karti hain. Isse unka self-respect dikhta hai.
  • Saaf goal. Woh sirf seekhne ki ichha nahi rakhtin; woh ek date (Saraswati Puja, vidya ki devi ka din) aur ek test (akele novel padhna) tay karti hain.
  • Bachkani hansi. Narrator dikhaawe se judge karti hai: safed baal aur chashma. Peeche mudkar dekhte hue woh maanti hai ki woh bachpana kar rahi thi.
  • Taken aback. Is phrase ka matlab hai kisi anjaani baat se surprised aur thoda shocked hona, jaise narrator hoti hai jab Avva uske aage jhukti hain.
  • Circle poora hota hai. Jis serial ne Avva mein padhne ki ichha jagayi, wahi pehli book banti hai jo woh khud padhti hain.

Answer Sahi

Unhone Dassara ke dauraan Saraswati Puja ke din ko apna target banaya. Yeh learning wale goal ke liye sahi hai, kyunki Saraswati vidya ki devi hain.

1.4 Characters, themes aur message

1.4.1 Characters

Kahani mein sirf do main log hain, aur yeh unhe apne roles badalte hue dikhati hai. Character wale questions ka answer dete waqt neeche wala comparison use karo; har quality ko character ke kisi kaam se support karo.

Compare

Yeh kaun hain?

Krishtakka (Avva), 62

  • kabhi school nahi gayin, lekin yaaddaasht bahut tez hai
  • swabhimaani aur self-respecting: padosi se poochhne mein bahut sharm aati hai
  • determined: apne liye deadline aur test tay karti hain
  • mehnati, utsuk student
  • vinamra aur samajhdaar: teacher ka sammaan karti hain, chahe uski umar kuch bhi ho
  • pyaar karne wali: dhyaan rakha ki unke bachche aur grandchildren padhein

Narrator, 12

  • apni grandmother se bahut pyaar karti hai aur har hafte unhe padh kar sunati hai
  • masti pasand: do din ki visit ko ek hafte tak kheench leti hai
  • shuru mein bachkani: Avva ke plan par hansti hai
  • patient, samarpit teacher
  • soch-samajh wali: chupke se novel gift ke liye khareedti hai
  • badi hokar imaandaar, apni galtiyan maanti hai

Kashi Yatre ki heroine

  • ek boodhi aurat jo Kashi jaane ko tarasti hai
  • apni bachat ek anaath ladki ki shaadi ke liye de deti hai
  • kisi aur ki khushi ko apni ichha se aage rakhti hai

1.4.2 Kashi Yatre: kahani ke andar ek kahani

Yahan kahani ke andar novel sirf sajaavat nahi hai; yahi plot ko aage badhata hai. Novel aur Avva ke beech teen links ko aate hue dekho.

3/3Test: chhapa hua novel unka exam aur unka gift ban jaata hai.

Fig. 1.4Teen tareeke jinse novel Avva ki kahani ko shape deta hai.

Left mein ek book hai jis par Kashi Yatre, the novel likha hai aur right mein ek circle hai jis par Avva, the reader likha hai. Pehle step mein ek arrow dono ko jodta hai: mirror, both miss Kashi (dono Kashi nahi pahunchin). Doosre step mein doosra arrow aata hai: spark, padhna chahti. Teesre step mein teesra arrow aata hai: test, khud padh leti.

Ek shaant sa link bhi hai. Heroine apna sapna chhod deti hai taaki ek jawaan ladki khush rahe. Avva bhi doosron ke liye jeeti rahin, apni family ko khilaya aur padhaya. Ab pehli baar woh apne liye kuch maangti hain, aur unki zindagi ki jawaan ladki use paane mein unki madad karti hai.

1.4.3 Themes aur message

  • Literacy matlab independence. Avva ke paas paisa aur pyaar karne wali family hai, phir bhi woh bebas mehsoos karti hain kyunki padhne ke liye unhe doosron par depend karna padta hai. Padhna seekhne se unhe azaadi aur izzat milti hai.
  • Seekhne ki koi umar nahi hoti. Ek baasath saal ki aurat kuch hi mahino mein alphabet seekh leti hai. Umar aur safed baal rukaavat nahi hain; asli rukaavat ichha-shakti ki kami hai.
  • Determination aur goals.
Avva ka school isliye chhoota kyunki unke zamaane ke log nahi sochte the ki ladkiyon ko iski zaroorat hai. Unki kahani humein yaad dilati hai ki har bachche ko school mein kyun hona chahiye.

Message. Seekhne mein kabhi der nahi hoti, aur seekhna apne pairon par khade hone ka sabse pakka tareeka hai. Kahani yeh bhi sikhati hai ki logon ko unki umar se judge mat karo, aur jo bhi humein sikhaye uska sammaan karo.

Jab Avva seekhne ka faisla karti hain, to woh mainly kya chahti hain?
Answer dekho

Answer (A) kisi par depend kiye bina khud padhna

Avva kehti hain ki woh independent hona chahti hain. Serial akele na padh paane se woh dependent mehsoos karti thin, aur padhna seekhne se yeh khatam ho jaata.

1.5 Critical reflection: story

Prose piece par exam questions do tarah ke hote hain. Extract-based questions tumhe ek chhote passage ki taraf bhejte hain: use dobara padho, clue dhoondho, aur apne words mein answer do. Short aur long answers check karte hain ki tum logon, events aur themes ko samajhte ho ya nahi. Long answer ke liye ek point banao, use kahani ke kisi event se support karo, phir samjhao ki usse kya dikhta hai.

Practice 1: Story par critical reflection: answers ke saath

  1. Short answerMediumCritical Reflection I.1

Part I ka woh passage padho jo “When I came back to my village” se shuru hota hai aur wahan khatam hota hai jahan Avva narrator ka maatha chhooti hain. Phir answer do.

    1. Avva ke aansuon par narrator ka surprise batata hai ki Avva aam taur par

      Answer dekho

Answer (B) strong aur khush-mizaaj thin

Woh mushkil waqt mein bhi kabhi nahi royi thin, isliye aam taur par strong thin; doosri jagah unhe hamesha muskurata hua bataya gaya hai.
    2. Jab Avva sir hilati hain lekin kuch nahi kehtin, to narrator kya karti hai, aur isse uske baare mein kya pata chalta hai?

      Solution dikhao

She lets it go and soon forgets about it. This shows she is still a carefree child who does not yet sense how deep Avva's sorrow is.

    3. Us raat Avva ka kaunsa kaam granddaughter ke liye unka pyaar dikhata hai?

      Solution dikhao

She comes and sits beside the narrator on the terrace and touches her forehead lovingly.

    4. Writer garmiyon ki raat aur poore chaand ka zikr kyun karti hain?

      Solution dikhao

They create a calm, gentle, private mood. This quiet moment, away from others, is when Avva finally opens her heart, and the peaceful setting contrasts with her sorrow.

  2. Short answerMediumCritical Reflection I.2

Part II ka woh passage padho jo “I have decided I want to learn” se shuru hota hai aur umar ke baare mein Avva ke jawaab par khatam hota hai. Phir answer do.

    1. Avva ke goal ke liye Saraswati Puja sahi deadline kyun hai?

      Answer dekho

Answer (B) Saraswati vidya ki devi hain.

Saraswati ki pooja gyaan aur vidya ki devi ke roop mein hoti hai, isliye unka din padhne wale goal ke liye sahi hai. Isse Avva ko aim karne ke liye ek pakki date bhi mil jaati hai.
    2. Jab un par hansa jaata hai to Avva kaise react karti hain, aur isse kya dikhta hai?

      Solution dikhao

She simply smiles and replies calmly and wisely. This shows patience, confidence and maturity: the teasing does not shake her resolve.

    3. Passage ka kaunsa word dikhata hai ki badi ho chuki narrator apne hi bartaav ko judge karti hai? Uska judgement kya hai?

      Solution dikhao

Childishly. Looking back, she admits that making fun of her grandmother was immature and wrong.

    4. Is passage se Avva ki ek quality aur chhoti narrator ki ek quality evidence ke saath batao.

      Solution dikhao
      • Avva: determination, since she fixes a date and promises to work harder than anyone.
      • The narrator: thoughtless at twelve, since she judges Avva by her grey hair and spectacles.
  3. Short answerEasyCritical Reflection II.1

Avva padosi se serial padh kar sunane ko keh sakti thin. Unhone aisa kyun nahi kiya?

    Solution dikhao

She was ashamed to admit that she could not read. Asking would have exposed her helplessness to the village. Her self-respect made her wait and suffer in private instead.

  4. Short answerEasyCritical Reflection II.2

Narrator pehle kyun hansti hai, aur isse baarah saal ki umar mein uske baare mein kya pata chalta hai?

    Solution dikhao

She laughs because she thinks a grey-haired woman of sixty-two is too old to learn the alphabet. It shows she is still a child who judges by appearances. The grown-up narrator calls her laughter childish.

  5. Short answerMediumCritical Reflection II.3

Kahani mein Kashi Yatre ka kya role hai? Shuruaat, beech aur end ke baare mein socho.

    Solution dikhao
    • Beginning: Avva sees herself in its heroine, an old woman who never reaches Kashi.
    • Middle: missing one episode makes her decide to learn.
    • End: the printed novel is her test and her gift; reading its title proves she has succeeded.
  6. Short answerMediumCritical Reflection II.4–5

Avva ki seekhne ki ichha aur Saraswati Puja ke din ka unka kaam unke baare mein kya batate hain?

    Solution dikhao

Her wish to learn shows courage, self-respect and a refusal to stay dependent. Touching her teacher's feet shows humility and a belief that knowledge deserves respect, whoever brings it. Together they show a wise woman who values learning above pride.

  7. Long answerHardCritical Reflection II.6

Avva maanti hain ki ek determined insaan kisi achhe kaam ke liye har rukaavat paar kar sakta hai. Kahani unhe sahi kaise saabit karti hai? 100–120 words mein answer do.

    Solution dikhao

Avva faces many obstacles. She is sixty-two, she has never held a pencil as a student, her eyesight needs spectacles and her days are full of housework. Even her own granddaughter laughs at her plan.

Her determination beats them all. She sets a firm deadline, studies every day, and does more homework than any pupil. Within a few months she reads a novel on her own.

The cause is good too: she wants independence, not praise. The story shows that strong will and steady effort matter more than age, and that it is never too late to learn.

  8. Long answerHardCritical Reflection II.7

Kahani kaise dikhati hai ki education insaan ko independence deti hai? 100–120 words mein answer do.

    Solution dikhao

Before she learns, Avva depends on her granddaughter for every episode. When the narrator is away she feels helpless; even the family's money cannot help her.

Learning changes this. After months of study she can read any novel herself, so she no longer waits for anyone. She calls herself independent.

The story also shows that reading gives dignity: she no longer needs to hide what she cannot do. Education, the story suggests, frees people at any age to live on their own terms.

  9. ActivityMedium

Socho aur likho: imagine karo ki tum Avva ho. Saraswati Puja ke din ki raat ke liye ek diary entry (lagbhag 100 words) likho.

    Solution dikhao

    Ek model entry:

Saraswati Puja day, late at night. Today I passed my test. My little teacher gave me Kashi Yatre as a book, and I read the title, the writer's name and even the publisher's name without help. I touched her feet, and she was so surprised! But a teacher is a teacher, even a twelve-year-old one. For months my eyes ached and my fingers grew tired, yet every new letter felt like a lamp being lit. Tonight I will read the first chapter by myself. I am no longer helpless. I feel free. – Krishtakka

1.6 Context mein vocabulary aur structures

Kahani humein practice ke liye chaar language tools deti hai: word pairs, words ki shuruaat, learning wale idioms aur events ko sahi order mein batane ke liye ek tense.

1.6.1 Binomials

Part I mein bachche temple ke aangan mein hide and seek khelte hain. Aisa word pair, jo and ya or se juda ho aur hamesha ek hi order mein use ho, binomial kehlata hai. Order badal do to fluent speaker ko woh galat lagta hai: hum bread and butter kehte hain, kabhi butter and bread nahi.

  • Milte-julte words: safe and sound, peace and quiet

1.6.2 Opposites banane wale prefixes

Prefix letters ka ek group hai jo kisi word ke aage joda jaata hai taaki uska meaning badle. Kuch prefixes word ko uska opposite bana dete hain: happy ban jaata hai unhappy. Root word ki spelling wahi rehti hai, isliye un + necessary se do n wala unnecessary banta hai, aur mis + spell se do s wala misspell.

Table 1.2Prefixes aur woh meaning kaise badalte hain

3/7im- b, m aur p se pehle aata hai: impatient.

Fig. 1.5Ek root, ek prefix, ek naya meaning. Dhyaan do ki kaunse prefixes root ke pehle letter par depend karte hain.

Ek prefix tile aur ek root word tile plus sign se jude hain, neeche naye word tak ek arrow hai aur uske neeche ek rule. Saat steps dikhate hain: un plus kind se unkind (un- means not); in plus complete se incomplete; im plus patient se impatient (im- before b, m, p); ir plus regular se irregular (ir- before r); dis plus agree se disagree; mis plus lead se mislead (wrongly); extra plus curricular se extracurricular (beyond).

Kahani mein dhoondho. Unhappy, unusual, unfortunately, independent aur irrespective jaise words mein negative prefixes hain. Kuch aur words mein aise prefixes hain jo opposite nahi banate: grandparents (grand-), afternoon (after-), overcome (over-) aur return (re-, matlab back ya again).

1.6.3 Learning wale idioms

Kahani ki aakhri line kehti hai ki Avva “with flying colours” pass hui. Yeh ek idiom hai: ek fixed phrase jiska meaning uske words se nahi nikala ja sakta. Iska matlab hai very successfully. Kaha jaata hai ki yeh phrase un sailing ships se aaya jo jeet ke baad apne flags (unke colours) oonche lehraate hue lautte the. English mein padhai aur seekhne ke baare mein bahut saare idioms hain.

1.6.4 Past perfect tense

Kahani ka end ek sentence mein yeh hai: By the time Dassara came, Avva had learnt to read. Past mein do cheezein hui. Padhna seekhna pehle hua, isliye uske saath had learnt aata hai. Dassara baad mein aaya, isliye uske saath simple past came aata hai. had + past participle wala form past perfect tense hai.

3/3Baad wala action simple past leta hai: reached.

Fig. 1.6By the time we reached the stop, the bus had left.

Ek timeline left mein past se right mein now tak chalti hai. Uspar do events hain: bus leaves, aur baad mein, we reach. Pehle step mein sirf events dikhte hain. Doosre step mein pehle wale event par had left label aata hai, note ke saath pehle: had plus V3. Teesre step mein baad wale event par reached label aata hai, note ke saath baad: simple past, aur ek curved arrow pehle wale event se baad wale event tak jaata hai.

  • Form: har subject ke liye had + past participle (V3): I had gone, she had gone, they had gone.
  • Negative aur question: She had not (hadn't) finished. Had she finished?
  • Signal words: by the time, before, after, when, already, just, never … before.
  • After ya before ke saath order pehle se saaf hota hai, isliye dono parts mein simple past bhi sahi hai: After she finished her homework, she went out. Past perfect is baat par zor deta hai ki pehla action poora ho chuka tha.
  • Ek akele past event ke liye nahi: ✗ I had visited Hampi last year. ✓ I visited Hampi last year.
  • had ke baad hamesha V3: ✗ had went ✓ had gone.

Kahani ke sentences, zor se bol kar try karo: Avva had never been to school, so she could not read the serial. When the narrator returned, the new episode had already arrived. The narrator had bought the novel before Saraswati Puja came.

24 Gokul Road, Hubballi, Karnataka (address ka har part nayi line par)

    12 July 2026

The Editor, The Hubballi Herald, Station Road, Hubballi

Subject: Students Can Lead Adult Literacy

    Sir/Madam,

Through your newspaper, I wish to draw attention to the many adults around us who still cannot read a bus board or fill in a bank form. Last month, volunteers from our school spent four weekends in a nearby village. By the end, over thirty adults could write their names and read simple signboards.

Such drives help everyone. Adults gain confidence and no longer depend on others, and they become safer from fraud. Students learn patience, respect and the joy of service. Literacy also helps families keep their children in school.

I would urge every school to adopt a nearby ward or village and hold weekend classes. Schools could award certificates to volunteers, and local libraries could offer space. I hope you will publish this letter so that more students join this cause.

    Yours truly,

Kavya Rao, Student Volunteer, Class 9

1.10 Appreciation ke liye padho: poem, stanza by stanza

Ek nazar mein poem. Tumhari book ke extract mein teen stanzas hain. Speaker ek garv karne wala Indian hai jo saare Indians ki taraf se bolta hai, isliye poem baar baar ours aur let's kehti hai. Stanza 1 India ke natural aur pavitra khazaanon ki taareef karta hai, stanza 2 uske logon aur culture ki, aur stanza 3 uski spiritual wisdom aur bahut purani umar ki.

Stanza 1 (aath lines). Speaker chaar khazaanon ke naam leta hai, har do lines mein ek: Himalaya (jise Himavant kaha gaya hai), Ganga nadi, Upanishads aur khud yeh desh. Har baar pattern ek jaisa hai. Pair ki pehli line khazaane ko ours kehti hai, ek dash humein rukne par majboor karta hai, aur doosri line garv se kehti hai ki duniya mein iski barabari koi nahi kar sakta. Inmein se do daave aise questions hain jinke answer ki zaroorat nahi: kaunsi nadi itni graceful hai, kaunse scriptures inke saath khade ho sakte hain? Stanza India ko peerless keh kar aur sabko uski taareef karne ke liye bula kar khatam hota hai.

3/4Doosri line garv se kehti hai ki iski barabari koi nahi kar sakta; lines 4 aur 6 yeh rhetorical questions ke roop mein karti hain.

Fig. 1.10Stanza 1 kaise bana hai: daava, pause, garv.

Left mein chaar boxes stanza 1 ke khazaanon ki list dete hain: mountains, river, scriptures aur land, heading is ours ke neeche. Doosre step mein har box ke baad ek mota dash aata hai, jo pause dikhata hai. Teesre step mein right mein chaar boxes batate hain ki har dash ke baad kis tarah ka daava aata hai: ek boast, ek rhetorical question, ek aur rhetorical question, aur taareef ka bulawa. Aakhri step mein taareef ke bulawe par circle lagta hai aur use refrain label milta hai, jo stanza 3 ko bhi khatam karta hai.

Stanza 2 (chaar lines). Baar baar aane wala word here desh ki taraf ishaara karta rehta hai, jo in saari daulaton ka ghar hai.

Stanza 3 (chaar lines). Aakhri stanza India ko bade spiritual ideas ki janm-bhoomi ke roop mein dikhata hai: ultimate truth, Brahman, ki Upanishadic khoj aur Buddha ki teaching, dono isi mitti par panpe. Poet yeh bhi zor deta hai ki yeh desh kitna purana hai, “hoary antiquity” ka desh, phir refrain extract ko khatam karne ke liye wapas aata hai. End ke dots batate hain ki Bharati ka geet tumhari book mein chhape hisse se aage bhi chalta hai.

Mood, tone aur sound. Mood, yaani poem reader ke mann mein jo feeling jagati hai, garv bhara, josh dilane wala aur shraddha bhara hai. Tone, yaani poet ka apna attitude, taareef aur jashn wala hai. English version mein koi fixed rhyme scheme nahi hai: yeh free verse mein hai, aur iski music repetition (ours, here) aur baar baar aane wale refrain se aati hai. India ko ek aurat (she, her) ke roop mein dikhaya gaya hai, aur Ganga ko insaani grace aur daryadili di gayi hai: dono personification ke examples hain.

1.11 Poem mein poetic devices

Tumhari book is chhoti si poem mein kai devices pehchaanne ko kehti hai. Table unhe ek saath laata hai; neeche ke notes mushkil wale devices samjhate hain.

Table 1.7Bharat Our Land mein devices
DevicePoem mein kahan, aur uska effect
refrainYeh pukaar ki India peerless hai aur uski taareef honi chahiye, stanza 1 aur 3 ko khatam karti hai. Effect: main message ko pakka karti hai, ek chorus ki tarah jo sabko saath gaane bulata hai.
personificationIndia she hai; Ganga mein grace aur daryadili hai. Effect: desh ek pyaari maa jaisa lagta hai.
metaphor“this sunny golden land”. Effect: garmaahat, daulat, paki fasal aur shaan ka ehsaas deta hai.
rhetorical questionStanza 1 ki lines 4 aur 6. Effect: zor deta hai ki koi iski barabari nahi kar sakta; koi answer expected nahi.
repetitionours (stanza 1), here (stanzas 2 aur 3). Effect: saanjha garv aur strong rhythm banata hai.
imageryBada barfila pahaad, behti nadi, dhoop bhara desh, divya music. Effect: mann mein pictures aur awaazein banata hai.
hyperboleDuniya mein kahin koi barabar nahi; har shubh cheez yahin milti hai. Effect: pyaar aur garv mein badha-chadha kar kehta hai.
allusionUpanishads, Brahma-knowledge, Buddha ka dhamma. Effect: India ki mahaan spiritual traditions ki yaad dilata hai.

Refrain. Refrain kisi gaane ke chorus jaisa hota hai. Yahan yeh pehle aur aakhri stanzas ko khatam karta hai, isliye poem baar baar apne main daave par lautti hai. Iske words let's praise her readers ko gaane walon mein badal dete hain, isliye poem sabke liye ek geet jaisi lagti hai.

Metaphor. Metaphor ek cheez ko aise describe karta hai jaise woh koi doosri cheez ho. India sach mein sone ka bana nahi hai, lekin use “this sunny golden land” kehna ek saath dhoop, sunehri fasal, daulat aur shaan ka ehsaas deta hai.

Symbols. Poem ka har khazaana ek symbol bhi hai: woh kisi aisi quality ko represent karta hai jiski poet taareef karta hai. Har ek kya suggest karta hai, yeh dekhne ke liye Play dabao.

3/3Warriors aur sages courage aur wisdom suggest karte hain; golden land wealth aur glory suggest karta hai.

Fig. 1.11Poem ke symbols kya represent karte hain. Brahma-knowledge Buddha ke dhamma ke saath jaata hai: dono enlightenment suggest karte hain.

Left mein chhe symbols ki list hai. Pehle step mein pehle do apne meanings se judte hain: Himavant strength and permanence se, aur Ganga purity and generosity se. Doosre step mein Upanishads spiritual heritage se aur Brahma-knowledge enlightenment se judte hain. Aakhri step mein warriors and sages courage and wisdom se, aur golden land wealth and glory se judte hain.

Imagery. Imagery aisi language hai jo senses ko chhooti hai. Hum bade barfile Himavant, behti Ganga aur dhoop mein chamakta desh dekhte hain, aur stanza 2 ki divya music lagbhag sunte hain.

Dashes aur question marks. Stanza 1 mein har pair ki pehli line ek dash par khatam hoti hai. Yeh jaan-boojh kar ek pause banata hai, lines ko dheema, mantra jaisa rhythm deta hai, aur khazaane ko uske baad aane wale bold daave se alag karta hai. Question marks shak nahi dikhate. Woh rhetorical questions hain: poet itna sure hai ki koi nadi ya scripture inki barabari nahi kar sakta ki woh humein ek naam lene ki chunauti deta hai.

Definition
Hyperbole

Jaan-boojh kar sach se kahin zyada kehna, taaki koi feeling ya point aur strong ho jaaye.

ExampleI have told you a hundred times to switch off the fan! Poem mein: yeh daava ki duniya mein kahin bhi koi Himavant ke barabar nahi.

Poets hyperbole tab use karte hain jab unki feelings seedhe facts ke liye bahut badi hoti hain. Yeh kehna ki har shubh cheez India mein milti hai, naapa-tula daava nahi hai; apne desh ke liye pyaar aisa hi sunai deta hai.

Definition
Ode

Kisi insaan, jagah, cheez ya idea ki taareef mein likhi ek lyric poem, bhavya aur serious style mein.

ExampleBharat Our Land India ki taareef mighty, sacred, divinest aur auspicious jaise oonche words mein karti hai.

Yeh poem ek ode hai kyunki iska ek hi maqsad taareef hai, iska subject ek aisa desh hai jiski poet shraddha karta hai, iske words bhavya hain, aur iska refrain hum sabko India ki taareef karne bulata hai.

Definition
Allusion

Kisi mashhoor insaan, kahani, jagah, event ya text ka chalte-chalte zikr, jise writer maanta hai ki reader bina explanation ke pehchaan lega.

ExampleWake up, Kumbhakarna! Ramayana ke us giant ki taraf allusion hai jo mahino tak sota tha.

Poem teen mahaan traditions ki taraf bina samjhaye allusion karti hai: Upanishads, Indian philosophy ke dil mein base purane texts; Brahma-knowledge, ultimate truth aur apne asli self ka gyaan; aur Buddha ka dhamma, unki karuna, ahinsa aur enlightenment ke raaste ki teaching.

The poem fosters pride by reminding readers of India's mountains, rivers, scriptures, heroes and thinkers, and by calling them ours. Its refrain invites everyone to join in praise, so readers feel part of something great and old.

Pride of this kind can inspire people to protect what they love: to keep the Ganga clean, to value our languages and to honour learning.

Poem suffixes se bhari hai: generous, antiquity, divinest aur peerless sab mein ek suffix hai.

  • What makes my town truly special is …
  • Visitors are always amazed by …
  • If you come here in (month), you must see …
  • The people here are known for …
  • Whenever I come back home, I feel …

Ek model talk. What makes Mysuru special is its Dasara. For ten days the whole city celebrates, and on festival evenings the palace glows with thousands of bulbs. Visitors are always amazed by the grand procession on the last day. Mysuru is also known for its sandalwood, its silk and rich Mysore pak. Whenever I stand on Chamundi Hill and look down at the city, I feel lucky to call it home.

1.14.3 Writing: yaad reh gayi kisi jagah par ek paragraph

Kisi trip ke baare mein descriptive paragraph reader ko apne saath le jaana chahiye. Ise sandwich ki tarah banao: upar topic sentence, beech mein details, neeche closing thought.

3/3Closing thought: yeh visit tumhare liye kya maayne rakhti hai.

Fig. 1.13Kisi yaadgaar jagah ke baare mein likhne ke liye paragraph plan.NCERT p. 32

Upar wale bun par topic sentence label hai. Doosre step mein filling ki teen layers aati hain: kyun gaye, kiske saath; taiyaari aur kahan ruke; aur kya dekha aur kiya. Aakhri step mein neeche wala bun aata hai, jis par closing thought label hai.

  • Past tense mein, ek paragraph mein 120–150 words likho.
  • Paanch questions ke answer do: tum kyun gaye, kaun saath gaya, kaise taiyaari ki, kahan ruke aur kya kiya.
  • Apne senses use karo: tumne kya dekha, suna, soongha, chakha aur chhua.
  • Order ke liye linking words use karo: before the trip, on the first morning, later, in the evening, finally.

  1. Long answerMediumWriting Task I (poem)

Kisi aisi jagah ke baare mein paragraph (120–150 words) likho jahan tum kabhi gaye the aur jo tumhari yaadon mein reh gayi hai: koi fort, beach, mela, hill station ya kisi rishtedaar ka gaon. Batao ki tum kyun gaye, kaun saath gaya, kaise taiyaari ki, kahan ruke aur wahan kya kiya.

    Solution dikhao

    Ek model paragraph:

Last December, my family and I spent three days in Hampi, a place I can still picture clearly. My father, a history teacher, had long wanted to show us the ruins of the Vijayanagara capital, so my grandparents came along too. Before the trip, we read about its kings, packed caps and water bottles, and booked a small guesthouse near the Tungabhadra river. Each morning we set out early to beat the heat. We wandered among giant boulders, gazed at the stone chariot of the Vittala temple and took a wobbly ride across the river in a round coracle. In the evenings we climbed a rocky hill to watch the sun sink behind the temples. Hampi taught me that history is not only in books: you can walk right through it.

  9. Long answerHard

Story aur poem dono gyaan ko keemti maante hain. Dono se ek ek example ke saath samjhao. 100–120 words mein answer do.

    Solution dikhao

In the story, knowledge means freedom. Avva, who could not read, felt helpless though her family was well off. By learning the alphabet at sixty-two she became independent, and she honoured her young teacher because knowledge deserves respect.

In the poem, knowledge is part of India's greatness. Bharati counts the Upanishads, the sages, Brahma-knowledge and the Buddha's teaching among the country's proudest treasures.

So both texts treat learning as precious: the story shows what it does for one person, and the poem shows what it has meant for a whole civilisation.

  10. Long answerHard

Avva kehti hain ki teacher izzat ka haqdaar hai, chahe uski umar ya gender kuch bhi ho. Kya tum sehmat ho? Apne view ko story aur apne experience se support karo (100–120 words).

    Solution dikhao

Ek sample answer (doosre achhi tarah argue kiye gaye views bhi theek hain):

I agree. Respect belongs to the knowledge a teacher shares and the effort they put in, not to their age. Avva understood this: she touched the feet of her twelve-year-old granddaughter because that child had patiently taught her to read.

In my own life, a younger cousin taught me to code a simple game, and a classmate explained algebra better than any book. Their help changed what I could do.

Respecting every teacher keeps us humble and open to learning from anyone, which is exactly what made Avva such a good student.
