Jab zindagi tumhe gira deti hai to tum kya karte ho? Kuch log gire hi reh jaate hain. Kuch uthte hain aur chal dete hain. Kuch hi log uthkar us girne ko kisi badi cheez ki shuruaat bana dete hain. Kaveri ki Unit 5 isi teesre type ke insaan ke baare mein hai, aur us kindness ke baare mein bhi jo logon ko upar uthne mein madad karti hai.

Is unit mein do texts hain. Pehla, The World of Limitless Possibilities, Dr Deepa Malik ka interview hai, jo Paralympic medal jeetne wali pehli Indian woman hain. Doosra, David Roth ki poem Nine Gold Medals, ek race ki kahani sunati hai jismein aath runners ek nauvein runner ki madad ke liye ruk jaate hain. Pehle har text apni NCERT book mein padho. Phir yeh page tumhe summaries, meanings, grammar, writing aur exam-style practice se le chalta hai, answers ke saath.

5.1 Before You Read: Paralympic Games

Unit ki shuruaat Sheetal Devi ki ek photograph se hoti hai, jo Jammu and Kashmir ke Kishtwar district ki ek para-archer hain. Unka janm 2007 mein bina arms ke hua, phir bhi woh sabse ooche level par compound archery mein compete karti hain. Unhe January 2024 mein Arjuna Award mila. Paris 2024 Paralympics mein unhone aur Rakesh Kumar ne mixed team compound event mein bronze medal jeeta.

Paralympic Games duniya ka sabse bada multi-sport event hai un athletes ke liye jinhe physical, visual ya intellectual impairment hai. Yeh naam Greek word para se aaya hai, jiska matlab hai ‘beside’ (bagal mein): yeh Games Olympics ke saath-saath chalte hain. Seoul 1988 se Summer Paralympics usi host city mein hote hain jahan Summer Olympics hote hain, unke kuch hafte baad shuru hote hain. Olympics ki tarah, Summer aur Winter Games hote hain, aur dono har chaar saal mein hote hain.

Definition
Para-athlete

Aisa athlete jise physical, visual ya intellectual impairment ho aur jo para sports mein compete kare, jaise Paralympic Games ke events.

ExampleAvani Lekhara, jinhone Tokyo 2020 aur Paris 2024 dono Paralympics mein India ke liye shooting mein gold jeeta.

Paralympic ki kahani Second World War ke baad ek doctor ke idea se shuru hui aur ek global event ban gayi, jismein aaj India darjanon medals jeetta hai. Milestones dekhne ke liye Fig. 5.1 ko step by step dekho.

3/32016–2024: Rio mein Deepa Malik ka silver Indian women ke liye pehla hai; Paris mein India 29 medals jeetta hai.

Fig. 5.1Hospital ke ek sports day se world event tak: Paralympic movement ke milestones aur usmein India ki jagah.NCERT p. 138

Chhe milestones wali ek vertical timeline. Step 1, Origins, mein 1948 hai, jab Stoke Mandeville Games ghayal war veterans ke sport ke roop mein shuru hue, aur 1960, Rome mein pehle Paralympic Games, 23 countries ke 400 athletes ke saath. Step 2, India joins, mein 1968 judta hai, Tel Aviv mein India ke pehle Paralympics, aur 1972, India ka pehla medal, Murlikant Petkar ka swimming gold. Step 3, India rises, mein 2016 judta hai, jab Deepa Malik ne Rio mein silver jeeta aur India ki pehli woman Paralympic medallist baneen, aur 2024, ab tak India ke sabse achhe Games, Paris mein 29 medals ke saath.

Paralympics mein ‘para’ ek Greek word se aaya hai. Iska matlab kya hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (C) beside ya alongside (bagal mein, saath-saath)

Para ka matlab hai ‘beside’: Paralympics Olympics ke saath-saath, usi city mein hote hain. Games ki shuruaat war veterans se hui thi, lekin woh unka history hai, word ka matlab nahi.

5.2 Reading for Meaning: The Interview

5.2.1 Dr Deepa Malik se milo

Dr Deepa Malik ka janm 1970 mein Haryana mein hua. 1999 mein, jab woh 29 saal ki thin, unki spine mein ek tumour mila, aur uske baad hui surgeries ne unhe waist ke neeche paralysed kar diya. Iske baad unhone swimming mein aur phir throwing events mein compete kiya, aur Rio 2016 Paralympics mein shot put mein silver jeeta. Unke honours mein Arjuna Award (2012), Padma Shri (2017) aur Khel Ratna (2019) shaamil hain. 2020 se 2024 tak woh Paralympic Committee of India ki President rahin.

Yeh text ek interview hai: aisi baatcheet jismein ek insaan questions poochhta hai aur doosra unke answers deta hai. Print mein yeh ek play ki tarah likha jaata hai, har speaker ka naam uski baat se pehle. Har answer Dr Malik ki kahani ka ek hissa jodta hai, isliye hum ise answer by answer follow karenge.

5.2.2 Interview, answer by answer

Opening. Interview shuru hone se pehle text scene set karta hai. Yeh Paralympics ko un athletes ka celebration batata hai jo mushkilon ko haraate hain aur saabit karte hain ki disability talent ki limit tay nahi karti. Humein pata chalta hai ki India ne pehli baar 1968 mein hissa liya aur apna pehla medal, swimming mein, 1972 mein jeeta. Phir Dr Malik ka introduction hota hai: teen national honours wali ek Paralympian, jinki misaal poore desh ke young athletes ko inspire karti hai.

Woh upar kaise uthin? Interviewer batata hai ki International Paralympic Committee unhe duniya ki sabse inspiring women para-athletes mein ginti hai, aur poochhta hai ki woh yahan tak kaise pahunchin. Unka answer 29 saal ki umar se shuru hota hai. Spine mein tumour, ek operation, aur phir usse bhi buri khabar: woh phir kabhi chal nahi paayengi. Do raaste khule the, ek pachhtaave ka aur ek dobara banane ka, aur unhone dobara banana chuna. Kyunki sport pehle se unka passion tha, aur swimming unke past ka hissa, isliye para-athletics agla seedha step tha. Rio 2016 mein unka breakthrough aaya, shot put mein silver medal. Ab woh us medal ko ek personal jeet maanti hain jisne disability ke baare mein purane ideas ko bhi hila diya.

Honours ka matlab kya hai? Unhe trailblazer kehte hue interviewer ‘firsts’ ki ek lambi list ki taraf ishaara karta hai. Inmein shaamil hain: kisi woman ka jeeta hua India ka pehla Paralympic medal, aur kisi Indian woman para-athlete ka jeeta hua pehla Asian Games athletics medal. Dr Malik ke liye awards trophies se zyada saboot ke roop mein maayne rakhte hain. Yeh unke is yakeen ko support karte hain ki body kya nahi kar sakti, isse yeh kabhi tay nahi hota ki insaan kya haasil kar sakta hai; is idea ko woh ‘ability beyond disability’ kehti hain.

Sabse mushkil challenges kya the? Unka answer tumhe hairaan kar sakta hai: sabse kathin ladaai doosre logon ki kam ummeedon se thi. Unhe galat saabit karne ke liye strong muscles jitna hi strong mind bhi chahiye tha. Family ke saath aur apni himmat ke bal par unhone har challenge ko ek opportunity aur har obstacle ko ek stepping stone ki tarah dekhna seekha.

Kya sport soch badal sakta hai? Haan, woh kehti hain, aur unki apni zindagi iska saboot hai: Paralympics ne unhe ek nayi shuruaat di aur unhe woh banaya jo woh aaj hain. Badi tasveer mein, jo audience para-athletes ko jee-jaan se aur achha compete karte dekhti hai, use apni assumptions chhodni padti hain. Saamne ka saboot dikhata hai ki disabilities wale log kisi bhi doosre ke barabar, ya usse aage bhi, ho sakte hain.

Sport ke alawa unka role kya hai? Woh kehti hain ki doosron ke liye awaaz uthana unke mission ka core hai. Aaj unka kaam kai morchon par phaila hai:

  • disabilities wale logon ki emotional well-being;
  • women ke liye confidence ka raasta bante outdoor aur adventure sports;
  • garib families ke para-athletes ke liye madad, sports equipment samet;
  • schools aur colleges mein awareness sessions, kyunki young log hi kal ko shape karenge.

In sab ka ek hi maqsad hai: aisa society jismein kisi ki ability yeh tay na kare ki use kitna respect ya kitne mauke milenge.

Unki salaah kya hai? Unki nazar mein setback bas ek stage hai jis par tum apni taakat dikha sakte ho. Un logon ka sahara lo jo tum par vishwas karte hain, khud par vishwas rakho, aur apni kahani se doosron ko upar uthao. Unki aakhri baat disability ko hi naye nazariye se dikhati hai: yeh ek pinjra nahi, balki ek chhupi hui taakat hai.

Fig. 5.2 unki kahani ko ek staircase mein badal deta hai. Har slab unke safar ka ek stage hai, aur har stage apne neeche wale stage par tika hai.

5/5Ab woh har ability ke logon ke liye ek zyada fair duniya ke liye kaam karti hain.

Fig. 5.2Obstacles bane stepping stones: interview mein Dr Malik ke safar ke paanch stages.NCERT p. 140

Paanch slabs neeche left se upar right tak staircase ki tarah chadhte hain; jin slabs tak abhi nahi pahunche, woh dashed outlines mein bane hain. Step 1 sabse neeche ka slab dikhata hai: age 29, spinal tumour. Step 2 doosra slab jodta hai: woh regret nahi, hope chunti hain. Step 3 teesra jodta hai: woh para-athletics apnaati hain. Step 4 chautha jodta hai: Rio 2016, silver medal. Step 5 sabse upar ka slab jodta hai, woh inclusion ke liye awaaz uthaati hain, aur ek dashed arrow staircase ke bagal mein upar chadhta hai.

5.2.3 Key moments ko samjho

Raaste ka do-raaha. Interview ka dil ek faisla hai. Doctors ne unhe bataya tha ki unhe zindagi bhar wheelchair ki zaroorat hogi. Woh apne saal pachhtaave mein bita sakti thin; iske bajaay unhone dobara banana chuna. Text ka title isi pal se aata hai: unhone limitless possibilities ki ek duniya chuni.

Rio 2016 do baar kyun maayne rakhta tha. Silver medal saalon ki mehnat ke baad ek personal jeet thi. Saath hi yeh public saboot bhi tha ki wheelchair mein baithi ek woman India ke liye Paralympic medal jeet sakti hai. Isiliye woh ise soch badalne se jodti hain: jinhone unhe dekha, woh ab yeh nahi maan sakte the ki disability ka matlab bebasi hai.

‘Ability beyond disability’. Yeh phrase unke nazariye ka saar hai. Yeh nahi kehta ki disability asli nahi hai. Yeh kehta hai ki insaan ki abilities us cheez se zyada maayne rakhti hain jo woh nahi kar sakta, aur society ko pehli cheez par dhyaan dena chahiye, doosri par nahi.

Obstacles stepping stones ki tarah. Stepping stone tumhe ek naala paar karne mein madad karta hai. Jab woh obstacles ko stepping stones kehti hain, to unka matlab hai ki har mushkil aisi cheez ban gayi jis par khade hokar aage badha ja sake. Yahan unki family ka support maayne rakhta tha, kyunki jab log tumhare saath khade hon to resilience aasaan ho jaati hai.

Youth, kal ki awaaz. Unke awareness sessions jaan-boojhkar schools aur colleges ko target karte hain. Jo young log jaldi har tarah ki ability ka respect karna seekhte hain, woh bade hokar zyada fair workplaces, playgrounds aur cities banayenge.

5.2.4 Themes aur message

  • Resilience: zindagi badal dene wale setback se choice, mehnat aur support ke zariye wapas uthna.
  • Stereotypes todna: sport logon ko dikhata hai ki para-athletes kya kar sakte hain, aur disability ke baare mein bane-banaaye ideas toot jaate hain.
  • Inclusion aur dignity: ek fair society har kisi ko, chahe uski ability kuch bhi ho, respect aur ek asli mauka deti hai.
  • Sport mein women: world lists mein top par pahunchi ek woman para-athlete ek saath do stereotypes ko challenge karti hai.
  • Wapas dena: success sabse zyada tab maayne rakhti hai jab woh doosron ke liye darwaaze kholti hai.

Message: limits aksar soch se tay hoti hain, body se nahi. Determination, support aur ek fair mauke ke saath har insaan apni possibilities ki duniya dhoondh sakta hai.

5.3 Check Your Understanding and Critical Reflection

5.3.1 Fact file

Factual questions yeh test karte hain ki tum details jaldi dhoondh paate ho ya nahi. Interview ko skim karke numbers, names aur years dhoondho: yahi fact file ke anchors hain. Pehle yeh questions yaad se karke dekho, phir text check karo.

Text Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award aur Padma Shri ka naam leta hai. Bharat Ratna India ka sabse bada civilian award hai, aur woh unhe nahi mila hai.

5.3.2 Fact ya opinion?

Fact ko check karke true ya false saabit kiya ja sakta hai: koi date, score, record, ya koi event jo hua. Opinion batata hai ki koi kya maanta, mehsoos karta ya judge karta hai. Doosre log usse asehmat ho sakte hain, aur koi record is sawaal ka faisla nahi kar sakta.

Interview mein yeh dono har waqt mile-jule rehte hain. Dr Malik apni zindagi ke facts batati hain, phir batati hain ki unke liye unka kya matlab tha. Achhe readers is badlaav ko notice karte hain. Opinions aksar I feel, I believe aur in my view jaise signal words ke saath aate hain, ya best, finest aur wonderful jaise judge karne wale words ke saath. Facts mein aksar dates, numbers aur names hote hain.

3/3Measurement fact ki taraf ishaara karta hai; toughest jaisa judge karne wala word opinion ki taraf.

Fig. 5.3Statement ko sort karne ke liye poochho: kya ise check kiya ja sakta hai? Naapa hua number check ho sakta hai; toughest jaisa word nahi.NCERT p. 144

Do boxes ke upar do cards hain. Solid card par likha hai: An Olympic women's shot weighs 4 kg. Dashed card par likha hai: Shot put is the toughest event. Left box par label hai FACT, check ho sakta; right box, jiska border dashed hai, par label hai OPINION, belief ya feeling. Step 2 mein cards apne boxes mein gir jaate hain: weight wala statement Fact mein, toughest-event wala statement Opinion mein. Step 3 mein neeche clue notes dikhte hain: Fact ke neeche ek tick ke saath Clue: number, aur Opinion ke neeche ek cross ke saath Clue: toughest.

5.3.3 Cause aur effect

Cause woh hai jiski wajah se kuch hota hai; effect woh hai jo uske nateeje mein hota hai. Linking words connection dikhate hain: because, so, as a result, therefore, since aur led to. Kabhi koi linking word nahi hota, aur link tumhe khud samajhna padta hai.

Table 5.2Interview mein cause aur effect
CauseEffect
Unhe sport pasand tha aur woh swimmer reh chuki thin.Surgery ke baad unhone para-athletics chuna.
Logon ne unhe kam aanka.Unhone yeh saabit karne ke liye mehnat ki ki woh kya kar sakti hain.
Spectators para-athletes ko compete karte dekhte hain.Disability ke baare mein unke fixed ideas badalne lagte hain.
Woh maanti hain ki young log future ko shape karte hain.Woh schools aur colleges mein awareness sessions chalati hain.

Ek statement fact bhi ho sakta hai aur kisi cause–effect pair ka hissa bhi, kyunki dono skills alag sawaal poochhti hain. Fact ya opinion poochhta hai: kya ise saabit kiya ja sakta hai? Cause and effect poochhta hai: kya ek cheez doosri tak le jaati hai?

5.3.4 Critical reflection: extracts aur long answers

Critical reflection questions tumse words se aage sochne ko kehte hain: infer karna, tone judge karna, ideas ko jodna aur unhe zindagi se connect karna. Exams mein do tarah ke questions aate hain. Extract questions ek passage dikhate hain aur uspar chaar-paanch chhote questions poochhte hain. Long answers mein text ko explain, evaluate ya apni zindagi se relate karna hota hai.

  1. Questions dekhne se pehle poora extract ek baar padho.
  2. Har question ke liye woh exact sentence dhoondho jiske baare mein woh hai.
  3. Apne words mein answer do; koi word ya phrase tabhi quote karo jab question maange.
  4. Why wale question mein text se reason do, phir ek line mein use samjhao.
  5. Length ko marks ke hisaab se rakho: ek mark ke liye ek line, do ya teen marks ke liye teen-chaar lines.

Tone questions aksar aate hain. Tone speaker ka attitude hai, jo word choice se dikhta hai. Yeh tone words seekh lo; yeh tumhe interview aur poem dono mein milenge.

      Answer (B) stereotypes

Stereotypes poore groups ke baare mein fixed ideas hote hain. Attitudes zyada broad feelings hain, aur counterparts woh log hain jo milti-julti position mein hon.
    3. True ya false: woh kehti hain ki disabilities wale log kabhi bhi able-bodied athletes jitne capable nahi ho sakte.

      Answer dekho

      Answer Galat

Woh iska ulta kehti hain: woh utne hi capable ho sakte hain, aur kabhi-kabhi usse bhi zyada.
    4. Is answer ke aakhri hisse ko apne words mein dobara batao, jaise kisi dost ko suna rahe ho.

      Solution dikhao

She said the Paralympics gave her a whole new start and made her the person she is today. They also showed her that people with disabilities can do as well as anyone, or even better.

  3. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II, Q1

Dr Malik ke Rio medal par ek newspaper report imagine karo. 80–100 words mein samjhao ki aisi khabar readers ki disability ke baare mein soch kaise badal sakti hai.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: A report on her medal would give readers evidence they could not ignore. A woman paralysed below the waist won a Paralympic medal, a first for Indian women, and earned the country's top sporting honours. Every throw she made in public showed strength and skill, not weakness. People who had assumed that a wheelchair meant dependence now saw an international champion. Her ‘firsts’ also opened the way for others, so younger para-athletes no longer seemed like rare exceptions. In this way, her success turned pity into respect.

  4. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II, Q2

Dr Malik schools aur colleges mein disability awareness sessions chalati hain. Aise sessions agle das saal mein ek school ko kaise badal sakte hain?

    Solution dikhao
    • Students who learn early about different abilities grow into adults who include rather than exclude.
    • Schools may add ramps, accessible toilets and sports for all, because students ask for them.
    • Children with disabilities feel welcome, so more of them join sports and stay in school.
    • Some of today's students will become teachers, architects and officials who plan for everyone.
  5. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II, Q3

Is interview ke liye koi aur title suggest karo. Kya woh ‘The World of Limitless Possibilities’ se behtar hai ya kharab? Text se reasons do.

    Solution dikhao

Another title could be ‘Ability Beyond Disability’. It names her guiding idea, but it says little about her journey. The original title is better. It echoes the choice she made at 29, when she picked a life of possibilities over a life of regret, and her achievements (a Paralympic silver, many ‘firsts’, national awards and her advocacy) show those possibilities were real. Limitless also matches her message that disability is not a limit.

  6. Long answerEasyCritical Reflection II, Q4

Kisi jaan-pehchaan wale ya kisi famous insaan ke setback ke baare mein likho, aur dikhao ki woh unki taakat saabit karne ka mauka kaise bana. Isse un logon ko kya seekh milti hai jo athletes nahi hain?

    Solution dikhao

Sample answer: My cousin failed her Class 10 maths exam. Instead of giving up, she listed her weak topics, practised them daily and passed the supplementary exam with good marks. The failure became the reason she improved. The lesson for everyone is that a setback is not the end of the road; seen as a challenge, it can build confidence and resilience.

  7. Long answerHardCritical Reflection II, Q5

Yeh baat kyun maayne rakhti hai ki ek woman para-athlete ka naam inspiring athletes ki world list mein aaya? Apne area mein sport khelne wali ladkiyon ke baare mein socho.

    Solution dikhao
    • It shows that women can reach the very top of world sport, even with a disability.
    • It gives girls a visible role model and encourages families to let their daughters play.
    • It draws media attention and funding to women's sport.
    • It breaks a double stereotype: about women and about disability.
  8. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II, Q6

Ek young para-athlete ko, jo abhi shuruaat kar raha hai, ek chhota message (50–60 words) likho, jo ‘ability beyond disability’ ke idea par based ho.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: Dear Kavya, as you begin, remember that your sport is about what you can do. Find the event that suits your strengths and train to build them. Others may expect little of you; let your results answer them. Measure yourself only against your own best, and enjoy every step forward. I will be cheering for you. Best wishes, Aarav

  9. Long answerEasyCritical Reflection II, Q7

Interview se seekhe teen lessons likho. Har ek ke liye batao ki tum use apni zindagi mein kaise use karoge.

    Solution dikhao
    • Never waste a setback. When I do badly, I will look for what I can learn from it.
    • Find your support system. I will ask family and friends for help instead of struggling alone.
    • Respect every ability. I will include classmates with disabilities in games and group work.

Answer (1) a new lease of life, (2) breakthrough moment, (3) defied the odds, (4) In hindsight

Fresh start hai a new lease of life; bada pal hai breakthrough moment; ummeedon ke khilaaf jeetna hai defying the odds; peeche mudkar dekhna hai in hindsight.

5.4.2 Word cline: movement ke words

Word cline milte-julte matlab wale words ko unki intensity ke order mein lagata hai, jaise kisi dhalaan par points. Warm aur boiling dono garmi batate hain, lekin ek bahut zyada strong hai. Words ko cline par rakhne se tumhe bilkul sahi word chunne mein madad milti hai (Fig. 5.4).

3/3Beech mein sabse halke words bharo.

Fig. 5.4Temperature ka word cline: ek idea, ek extreme se doosre extreme tak.NCERT p. 148

Ek khada thermometer, jiska neeche ka aadha hissa halka neela aur upar ka aadha halka orange hai. Step 1 sirf do sire dikhata hai: neeche freezing aur upar boiling, dono par most extreme likha hai. Step 2 freezing ke theek upar cold aur boiling ke theek neeche hot jodta hai. Step 3 beech ke halke words, cool aur warm, jodta hai, aur unke bagal mein mild label wala ek bracket. Poora cline neeche se upar aisa padhta hai: freezing, cold, cool, warm, hot, boiling.

Interview mein sprinting aata hai, jo bahut tez movement ka word hai, aur NCERT tumse movement words ke ek set ko cline par lagane ko kehta hai. Yahan har word ka matlab hai, speed ke hisaab se group kiya hua. Kuch words bahut paas-paas hain (amble, stroll aur saunter teenon ka matlab aaraam se chalna hai), isliye tumhare order mein chhote fark theek hain, agar tum unhe samjha sako.

5.4.3 Modal auxiliaries

Modal auxiliaries helping verbs hain, jaise can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would aur must. Yeh main verb se pehle aate hain aur matlab mein ek shade jodte hain: ability, possibility, permission, advice, duty, request ya prediction. Ek hi modal alag-alag kaam kar sakta hai, isliye context batata hai ki uska function kya hai.

Modals ka form kabhi nahi badalta (coulds ya shoulding jaisa kuch nahi hota), aur unke baad aane wala verb hamesha base form mein hota hai: she could swim, she could swam nahi.

Table 5.6could, couldn't, should, would aur will ke functions
ModalFunctionExample
couldpast ability (pehle kar paana)At six, Meera could already swim across the pond.
couldpossibility (ho sakta hai)Carry an umbrella; it could rain this evening.
couldunreal ability (sirf kalpana mein)If I had wings, I could fly to school.
couldpolite request (tameez se request)Could you pass me the water bottle, please?
couldsuggestion (salaah)We could practise in the park after school.
couldn'tinability (na kar paana)Ravi couldn't lift the heavy shot at first.
couldn'timpossibility (ho hi nahi sakta)That couldn't be our bus; ours left an hour ago.
shouldadvice (salaah)You should warm up before you run.
shouldduty ya obligation (farz)Players should respect the umpire's decision.
shouldprobability (shayad hoga)The results should be out by Friday.
wouldpolite request (tameez se request)Would you help me carry these cones?
wouldpast habit (pehle ki aadat)As children, we would play kabaddi every evening.
wouldpast mein kiya gaya predictionThe coach knew the team would win.
willpromise (vaada)I will return your book tomorrow, I promise.

Answer
  • Could you open the window? : request
  • She could read at four. : past ability
  • You should drink more water. : advice
  • We would swim every summer. : past habit
  • It couldn't be Asha; she's in Pune. : impossibility
Polite could kuch maangta hai; bachpan ke baare mein could past ability hai; should salaah deta hai; would + every summer aadat hai; couldn't kisi baat ko naamumkin batata hai.

5.4.4 Direct aur reported speech

Interview direct speech mein likha hai: hum har speaker ke exact words padhte hain, ek play ki tarah. Iske zyaadatar sentences declarative hain: yeh poochhte, order dete ya exclaim karne ke bajaay statements dete hain. Kisi aur ko bina quote kiye batane ke liye ki kya kaha gaya, hum reported speech use karte hain, jise indirect speech bhi kehte hain.

Statement ko reported speech mein badalne ke liye kuch changes karne padte hain. Fig. 5.5 unhe ek-ek karke dikhata hai.

  1. Reporting verb: said, told (jiske baad koi person aaye), replied, added, explained ya remarked use karo.
  2. Quotation marks hata do aur linking word that jodo (bolne mein yeh aksar chhoot jaata hai).
  3. Pronouns badlo taaki woh naye speaker ke hisaab se fit hon: I → he/she, my → his/her, we → they, you → I/me/he/she.
  4. Jab reporting verb past mein ho, to tenses ko ek step peeche shift karo (table dekho).
  5. Time aur place words badlo: now → then, today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, yesterday → the day before, last night → the previous night, next week → the following week, here → there, this → that.

4/4tomorrow the next day ban jaata hai: sentence poora ho gaya.

Fig. 5.5Chaar changes Kabir ke exact words ko reported speech mein badal dete hain.NCERT p. 150

Do boxes, ek ke upar ek. Upar wala box, Direct speech, hamesha dikhata hai: Kabir said, I will join the team tomorrow, quotation marks mein. Neeche wala box, Reported speech, har step ke saath badalta hai, aur badla hua word bold mein dikhta hai. Step 1: Kabir said that I will join the team tomorrow, label quotes hatao + that. Step 2: Kabir said that he will join the team tomorrow, label pronoun, I to he. Step 3: Kabir said that he would join the team tomorrow, label tense, will to would. Step 4: Kabir said that he would join the team the next day, label tomorrow to the next day.

Table 5.7Past reporting verb ke baad tenses ka backshift
Direct speechReported speech
I play (present simple)he played (past simple)
I am playing (present continuous)he was playing (past continuous)
I have played (present perfect)he had played (past perfect)
I played (past simple)he had played (past perfect)
I will playhe would play
I can playhe could play
I may playhe might play
I must playhe had to play (duty), ya must (conclusion)

Jab kuch shift nahi hota. Agar reporting verb present mein ho (says, tells), to tenses waise hi rakho: Riya says that she trains every morning. Jo facts hamesha sach hain, unka tense bhi nahi badalta: The teacher said that the Earth goes round the Sun. Aur jab must ek logical conclusion ho, to woh must hi rehta hai, jaise They must practise a lot mein.

ExampleNCERT p. 151

Ek conversation ko report karna

Is conversation ko reported speech mein badlo.

  • Meher: I watched a wheelchair basketball match yesterday.
  • Kabir: I have never seen one.
  • Meher: The players turn their chairs very quickly.
  • Kabir: They must practise for hours every day.
  • Meher: My cousin plays for the state team.
  • Kabir: I will come to the next match with you.

Pehle khud try karo. Phir solution ek-ek step karke kholo.

5.5.2 Speaking: formal aur informal interviews

Interview ka style is par depend karta hai ki tum kisse baat kar rahe ho. Kisi dost ke saath, jaise tumhare school ka Sports Captain, informal style natural hai: first names, short forms (you're, what's) aur simple, gappon jaise questions. Kisi teacher ya coach ke saath formal style chuno: polite greeting, full forms, aur Could you tell us…? ya Would you describe…? jaise openers.

Compare

Informal aur formal interview questions

Informal: Sports Captain

  • Hi! Thanks for making time for this.
  • So, when did you get hooked on sports?
  • Ever felt like quitting? What kept you going?
  • Which win still gives you goosebumps?
  • Got any tips for us juniors?

Formal: Sports Coach

  • Good afternoon, sir. Thank you for agreeing to speak with us.
  • Would you tell us what first drew you to coaching?
  • Could you describe a setback in your career and what it taught you?
  • Which moment with your teams are you proudest of, and why?
  • If you could give young athletes one piece of guidance, what would it be?

5.5.3 Notice likhna

Notice ek chhota, formal message hai jo logon ke kisi group ke liye lagaya jaata hai: ek class, ek school ya ek housing society. Yeh kisi event, competition ya badlaav ki ghoshna karta hai, ya kisi khoyi ya mili cheez ki khabar deta hai. Log aate-jaate notices jaldi padhte hain, isliye achha notice chhota (lagbhag 50 words), saaf, aur box mein hota hai taaki alag dikhe.

Fig. 5.6 wala format follow karo. Body mein five Ws ke answers do: kya ho raha hai, kab, kahan, kaun hissa le sakta hai, aur kaise ya kab tak jawab dena hai. Simple, impersonal sentences use karo, aur Dear students jaise greetings mat likho.

4/4Likhne wale ka signature, naam aur designation.

Fig. 5.6Notice ke parts, upar se neeche tak. Poore notice ke charon taraf ek box banao.NCERT p. 153

Double border wala ek lamba rectangle notice ko dikhata hai. Step 1 upar ka hissa dikhata hai: SCHOOL NAME, CITY, aur uske neeche underline kiya hua word NOTICE. Step 2 left mein date aur HEADING ke liye ek shaded patti jodta hai. Step 3 body ke liye chaar prompts jodta hai: Kya ho raha hai? Kab aur kahan? Kaun hissa le? Kaise judein, kab tak? Step 4 neeche left mein sign-off jodta hai: Signature, Name, Designation.

Inmein se kya notice mein nahi hona chahiye?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) Dear students jaisa greeting

Notice impersonal hota hai, isliye usmein greeting nahi hota. Date aur likhne wale ka designation dono format ka hissa hain.

5.5.4 Text se aage seekhna

Part two: poem.

5.6 Nine Gold Medals: Before You Read

5.6.1 Olympics, Paralympics, Special Olympics

Log aksar Olympics, Paralympics aur Special Olympics ko mila dete hain. Inki spirit ek hai lekin yeh alag-alag athletes ke liye hain. Special Olympics movement 1968 mein United States mein Eunice Kennedy Shriver ne shuru kiya, aur uske pehle international Games usi saal Chicago mein hue.

Compare

Olympics, Paralympics aur Special Olympics

Olympics

  • Duniya ke top athletes ke liye khule.
  • Ancient Greece mein shuru hue; modern Games 1896 mein shuru hue.
  • Summer aur Winter Games, dono har chaar saal mein.
  • Aim: competition ka sabse ooncha level.

Paralympics

  • Physical, visual ya intellectual impairments wale elite athletes ke liye.
  • Pehle Games: Rome, 1960.
  • Olympic host city mein, Olympics ke kuch hi baad hote hain.
  • Athletes apne impairment ke hisaab se classes mein compete karte hain.

Special Olympics

  • Intellectual disabilities wale bachchon aur badon ke liye.
  • 1968 mein shuru hua; World Games baari-baari se summer aur winter mein hote hain.
  • Athletes milti-julti ability wale groups mein compete karte hain.
  • Aim: saal bhar training, inclusion aur confidence.

5.6.2 Sympathy, empathy aur compassion

Yeh teenon words mushkil mein pade kisi insaan ki parwaah karne ko describe karte hain, lekin har ek pichhle wale se zyada gehra hai (Fig. 5.7). Sympathy kisi ke liye bura mehsoos karna hai. Empathy unke saath mehsoos karna hai: khud ko unki jagah rakh kar unki feelings ko andar se samajhna. Compassion ek step aage jaata hai: yeh woh empathy hai jo tumhe madad karne ke liye aage badhati hai.

3/3Aisi samajh jo tumhe madad karne ke liye uthaati hai.

Fig. 5.7Kisi ke liye mehsoos karne se, unke saath mehsoos karne tak, aur madad ke liye kuch karne tak.NCERT p. 156

Simple gol figures wale teen panels, ek zameen par neeche baitha aur ek khada. Step 1 pehla panel dikhata hai, Sympathy, feel FOR: khada figure door rehta hai aur kehta hai So sad! Step 2 Empathy, feel WITH jodta hai: dono figures ek dashed outline ke andar saath-saath baithe hain, aur speech bubble kehta hai I feel it too. Step 3 Compassion, act to HELP jodta hai: khada figure doosre ki taraf haath badhata hai, ek arrow baithe figure ko uthte dikhata hai, aur bubble kehta hai Let me help.

Roz ki zindagi mein fark aisa dikhta hai. Kisi classmate ki bicycle chori ho gayi hai. ‘That's terrible, I'm sorry’ sympathy hai. ‘I know how upset you must be; I'd feel the same’ empathy hai. ‘Come, I'll walk home with you and help you report it’ compassion hai.

Log empathy se jo words jodte hain unmein understanding, listening, kindness, patience, respect, sensitivity aur putting yourself in someone's shoes shaamil hain. List mein apne words bhi jodo.

5.7 Nine Gold Medals: Reading for Appreciation

5.7.1 Poet ke baare mein

David Roth ek American folk singer-songwriter hain jo perform karte hain, songwriting sikhaate hain aur music retreats chalate hain. Nine Gold Medals unke ek song ke roop mein shuru hua tha, aur iske words popular Chicken Soup for the Soul books mein dobara chhape gaye hain. Song se shuru hone ki wajah se hi poem mein ek steady beat aur kahani sunane wale ki awaaz hai.

5.7.2 Poem ek nazar mein

  • Form: ek narrative poem (aisi poem jo kahani sunati hai), chaar lines ke aath stanzas mein, ballad ki tarah. Zyaadatar stanzas mein doosri aur chauthi line rhyme karti hain ya lagbhag rhyme karti hain.
  • Speaker: ek storyteller jo humse seedhe baat karta hai aur zor deta hai ki kahani sachchi hai.
  • Setting: Special Olympics meet mein ek purana sports field, din ke aakhri event ke dauraan, ek hundred-yard dash (lagbhag 91 metres).
  • Characters: nau young runners, jinmein sabse chhota gir jaata hai; woh aath jo uski madad karte hain; aur dekhti hui crowd.

5.7.3 Stanza by stanza

Har stanza apni book mein padho, phir yahan uska explanation padho. Explanations kahani ke saath chalte hain, lekin unka focus is par hai ki har stanza kya karta hai, sirf kya kehta hai us par nahi.

Stanza 1: kya daav par hai. Humein athletes ke baare mein sirf do baatein pata chalti hain, woh kahan se aaye hain aur unhone kitni mehnat se taiyaari ki hai, aur dono se medals keemti lagte hain. Yeh stanza film ke opening shot ki tarah kaam karta hai, chauda aur halchal bhara, aur humein ek kadi takkar ki ummeed karwata hai.

Stanza 2: audience. Focus athletes se hatkar unhe dekhne wale logon par jaata hai. Yeh batakar ki yeh din ka aakhri event hai, poet humein crowd ke saath intezaar karwata hai, aur josh bhara mood badhta jaata hai.

Stanza 3: thama hua pal. Ab jaakar humein race (hundred-yard dash) aur runners ki ginti pata chalti hai: nau. Stanza unhe gun chalne se theek pehle wale second mein, determined aur ready, rok kar rakhta hai. Resolved aur poised jaise words is ruke hue pal ko tense banate hain, isliye baad ka action aur bhi tez lagta hai.

Stanza 4: girna. Yeh sabse zyada action wala stanza hai, aur yeh word but par mudta hai. Ek hi verb ka chaturaai bhara double use gun aur runners dono ko ek saath explode karta dikhata hai. Phir camera aage wale runners ko chhodkar sabse chhote runner ke peeche jaata hai, jab uska pair phisalta hai aur woh sakht track par gir jaata hai.

Stanza 5: sabse neecha point. Ladke ki cheekh aur dhool mein padi uski ummeedon ki tasveer dikhati hai ki uski niraasha kitni poori hai. Phir storyteller kahani ke beech mein humse seedhe baat karta hai aur aage hone wali baat ki guarantee deta hai. Yeh rukawat ek hook hai: kuch khaas hone wala hai.

Stanza 6: turning point. Poet humein yaad dilata hai ki baaki runners ne kitne lambe samay tak training ki hai, taaki hum mehsoos karein ki rukkar wapas jaane mein woh kitna kuch chhod rahe hain. Ladke ko uthana poem ka pehla kaam hai jo jeetne ke baare mein nahi hai. Yahan se kahani ko kindness aage badhati hai.

Stanza 7: ek naye tarah ki race. Speed ka koi matlab nahi rehta; uski jagah saath hona le leta hai. Storyteller humara dhyaan upar lage Special Olympics banner ki taraf le jaata hai aur use perfect fit kehta hai, kyunki runners ne abhi-abhi movement ke inclusion aur dignity ke ideals ko jee kar dikhaya hai.

Stanza 8: title ka matlab khulta hai. Ending mein title ke nau gold medals milte hain, aur crowd ki khade hokar taaliyan dikhati hain ki audience result se sehmat hai. Aakhri line mein poet maanta hai ki words, uske apne bhi, runners ki khushi ke aage chhote pad jaate hain: poem khatam karne ka ek humble tareeka.

Fig. 5.8 track par race ko stanza by stanza follow karta hai. Runners simple markers hain; square wala sabse chhota runner hai.

5/5Stanza 8: woh saath finish karte hain, aur har runner ko gold milta hai.

Fig. 5.8Paanch pal mein race ki kahani. Square marker sabse chhota runner hai.NCERT p. 157

Upar se dikhta ek running track, nau lanes ke saath, left mein start line aur right mein dashed finish line. Aath runners gol markers hain; sabse chhota runner beech wali lane mein ek square marker hai. Step 1, stanzas 1 se 3: nau ke nau start par intezaar karte hain. Step 2, stanzas 4 aur 5: aath runners track ke beech tak daudte hain jabki square start ke theek aage ek star jaise burst ke paas jhuk kar gir jaata hai. Step 3, stanza 6: aath gire hue runner ke paas wapas aate hain, aur track ke neeche ek arrow peeche ki taraf ishaara karta hai. Step 4, stanza 7: nau ke nau, square phir se seedha, track ke beech mein jude haathon ke liye ek khadi line se jude hain. Step 5, stanza 8: nau ke nau saath finish tak pahunchte hain, aur har runner ke bagal mein ek peela medal dikhta hai.

5.7.4 Theme aur message

Central theme hai competition se upar compassion. Race ek winner dhoondhne ke liye hoti hai, phir bhi yeh runners apne hi ek saathi ko uthaane ke liye apne chances chhod dete hain. Poem jeet ke aam idea ko ulta kar deti hai: race na karke nau ke nau jeet jaate hain.

Ismein aur ideas bhi hain: sportsmanship, unity, dignity aur inclusion, yahi values Special Olympics ke liye khade hain.

Kya yeh sach mein hua tha? Is kahani ke versions dashakon se alag-alag jagahon aur saalon ke saath sunaaye jaate rahe hain, aur details confirm karna mushkil hai. Poem record books par depend nahi karti. Iski taakat is mein hai ki yeh humein kya imagine karne, aur kya karne, ko kehti hai.

Poem wide view (training, crowd) se start line par aur phir girne par aati hai.

5.8.3 Poem ko appreciate karna

Poets sounds aur tasveeron ko bhi utne hi dhyaan se chunte hain jitna words ko. Yahan Nine Gold Medals ke main devices hain aur har ek kya karta hai.

Table 5.8Nine Gold Medals mein poetic devices
DevicePoem mein kahanEffect
Alliteration‘dashed in the dirt’ aur ‘stumbled and staggered’Baar-baar aati sakht awaazein girne ke jhatke ko goonjati hain.
Visual imageryline mein lage starting blocks; track par pada ladka; haath pakde nau runners; khush chehreHum race ko aise dekhte hain jaise stands mein baithe hon.
Ironyrunners race chhod dete hain, phir bhi sab jeet jaate hainYeh jeet ke aam idea ko ulat deta hai.
Personificationchehre jo words se zyada bolte hainChehron ko bolne ki taakat di gayi hai.
Rhyme aur rhythmlines 2 aur 4 rhyme ya half-rhyme karti hain, jaise ahead aur insteadSteady beat us song ki yaad dilata hai jisse poem bani.

Imagery poem ko dilchasp banati hai kyunki yeh humein race ko jeene deti hai. Humein sirf yeh nahi pata chalta ki ek ladka gira; hum use sakht track par dekhte hain aur uski cheekh sunte hain. Isliye jab aath runners wapas mudte hain, to hum wahi hairaani aur garmahat mehsoos karte hain jo crowd ne ki. Alliteration key moments ko kaanon mein goonjane laayak banakar ismein aur jodta hai.

Tone aur mood. Tone poet ka attitude hai; mood woh feeling hai jo poem reader mein jagati hai. Shuru mein storyteller crowd aur runners ko describe karte hue josh bhara aur ummeed bhara lagta hai. Girne par tone serious aur tense ho jaati hai. Stanza 6 se yeh garm, taareef bhari aur khushi bhari ho jaati hai. Overall mood uplifting aur dil ko chhoo lene wala hai (Fig. 5.9).

3/3Stanzas 6–8: kindness poem ko khushi tak uthaati hai.

Fig. 5.9Poem ki feeling kaise upar uthti hai, girti hai, aur phir pehle se bhi upar jaati hai.NCERT p. 160

Message.

    • Months of training raise the stakes: everyone has a lot to win or lose.
    • A crowd gathers to cheer, and the final event of the day approaches, so tension builds.
    • This lively setting makes the fall, and the kindness that follows, more striking.
  4. Long answerEasyCritical Reflection II, Q2

Imagine karo ki tum sabse chhote runner ho. Jis pal tum gire, us waqt ki apni feelings 60–80 words mein describe karo.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: One moment I was flying off the line; the next, the track rushed up to meet me. My knees stung, but the pain inside was worse. All those months of practice, gone in a second. I could hear the others racing away, and I felt small and alone. I wanted to cry, and I did. I never imagined that, seconds later, I would see eight friends running back for me.

  5. Long answerEasyCritical Reflection II, Q3

Chaar cheezon ki list banao jinki wajah se yeh race runners ke liye itni maayne rakhti thi.

    Solution dikhao
    • They had trained for many weeks and months for this chance.
    • It was the last and most exciting event of the day.
    • A cheering crowd had gathered to watch them.
    • Each hoped to win a medal and make their families proud.
  6. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II, Q4

‘The slowest race can be the greatest one.’ Stanza 7 ke reference ke saath is idea ko samjhao.

    Solution dikhao

Speed stands for competition, the race to beat others. Slowing to a walk shows that the runners have chosen to move at the pace of the slowest, so that no one is left behind. It symbolises togetherness, care and equality, which matter more to them than a fast time.

  7. Long answerHardCritical Reflection II, Q5

Maan lo aath runners daudte rehte. Tab poem aur uska message kaise alag hote?

    Solution dikhao

It would be an ordinary race report with one winner, eight losers and a sad ending for the fallen boy. The surprise and warmth, and the irony of nine winners, would be lost. Instead of celebrating compassion, the poem would show only competition, or how cruel losing can be. Its message of shared victory would disappear.

  8. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II, Q6

Poet ki language ya tone ki do features chuno jinhone tumhe padhte rehne par majboor kiya. Samjhao ki har ek kya jodti hai.

    Solution dikhao
    • The storyteller's voice: he speaks to us directly and promises the story is true, which builds trust and suspense.
    • The changing tone: it moves from excitement to sadness to joy, so our feelings rise and fall with the runners'.
    • Other good choices: the song-like rhymes, which make the story easy to follow, or the vivid images of the race.
  9. Long answerMediumCritical Reflection II, Q7

Poem ek song ke roop mein shuru hui thi. Ek songwriter yahi kahani kyun phailaana chahega?

    Solution dikhao

He wanted to share a moving story showing that kindness is a greater victory than winning. He also wanted to celebrate the spirit of the Special Olympics and to encourage readers to help others, include everyone and measure success by how they treat people.

5.9 Nine Gold Medals: Vocabulary in Context

5.9.1 Collocations

Collocation words ka aisa combination hai jise bolne wale aadatan saath rakhte hain. Hum heavy rain kehte hain, strong rain nahi, aur standing ovation, standing applause nahi. Grammar ajeeb pair ko mana nahi karti; bas woh natural nahi lagta. Poem mein aur bhi adjective–noun collocations hain, jaise beaming faces aur final event.

Collocations seekhne se tumhari English fluent lagti hai. Fig. 5.10 dikhata hai ki ek adjective kuch khaas nouns ke saath kaise judta hai, aur milte-julte matlab wale words hamesha ek doosre ki jagah kyun nahi le sakte.

3/3Hum strong tea aur a powerful car kehte hain, kabhi ulta nahi.

Fig. 5.10Collocations: kuch adjective–noun pairs natural lagte hain, aur unke near-synonyms shayad nahi.NCERT p. 162

Step 1 ek word web dikhata hai jiske centre mein fast hai, aur woh food, bowler, train aur runner se juda hai. Step 2 uski jagah centre mein deep rakhta hai, jo sleep, breath, water aur sorrow se juda hai. Step 3 chaar boxes dikhata hai: strong tea aur powerful car par tick aur solid borders hain; powerful tea aur strong car par cross aur dashed borders hain. Ek note kehta hai: matlab same hai, lekin sirf ek pairing natural lagti hai.

Model exchange. Asha: What are your thoughts on the Special Olympics? Vikram: As I see it, they matter because they give every athlete a fair chance to compete. Asha: I agree. Would you say they change the athletes themselves? Vikram: Definitely. To my mind, the confidence they gain carries over into school and work too.

5.10.3 Slogans likhna

Slogan ek chhoti, yaad rehne wali line hai jo kisi cause ya idea ka saar batati hai. Sabse achhe slogans ek hi baar padhne ke baad dimaag mein reh jaate hain, isliye das words se kam rakho.

  1. Ek idea chuno jo tum chahte ho ki log yaad rakhein (jaise, ki har athlete ki jagah hai).
  2. Usse jude words jama karo: together, every, ability, heart, finish line.
  3. Sound aur shape ke saath khelo: rhyme, alliteration, contrast, ya aisa verb jo logon ko action ke liye bulaye (Join…, Cheer…).
  4. Zor se padho aur har gair-zaroori word hata do.

4/4Dekhne walon ko yeh batakar khatam karo ki unhe kya karna hai.

Fig. 5.11Poster ko zones mein plan karo: upar slogan, beech mein picture, neeche details, aur sabse neeche call to action.NCERT p. 166

Ek lambi poster sheet. Step 1 upar ek shaded band dikhata hai jismein word SLOGAN aur note chhota, catchy hai. Step 2 beech mein ek bada picture area jodta hai jismein simple sun aur pahaadiyan hain. Step 3 details ki lines jodta hai: Kya, Kab, Kahan; Kaun aa sake; Contact. Step 4 neeche ek gol kinaaron wala band jodta hai jismein words Call to action hain.

  • Tay karo ki dekhne walon ko kaun si ek cheez zaroor yaad rehni chahiye, aur poster ko usi ke around banao.

  8. Long answerHard

Is unit ke dono texts taakat ke baare mein hain. Dr Malik ki taakat ko aath runners ki taakat se compare karo. 100–120 words likho.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: Dr Malik's strength is the strength to rise. Paralysed at 29, she refused to sink into regret, rebuilt her life through sport and won a Paralympic silver. She also fought society's low expectations and now works so that others get a fair chance. The eight runners show a different strength: the strength to let go. They had trained for months to win, yet they stopped, turned back and lifted a fallen rival. Both kinds of strength put people first. Dr Malik proves that ability matters more than disability; the runners prove that kindness matters more than winning. Together, the two texts show that real strength is measured by what we do for ourselves and for others.
