Is unit mein do bilkul alag texts saath aate hain. Winds of Change pankha ke baare mein ek factual essay hai, yaani woh hand fan jise Indian craftspeople sadiyon se bunte, silte aur paint karte aaye hain. Canvas of Soil ek chhoti poem hai jo garden ko ek painter ki nazar se dekhti hai. Dono texts ke saath language tasks bhi hain: word pairs, fixed expressions, collocations, present perfect tense, listening, speaking aur do tarah ki writing.
Apni Kaveri textbook is page ke saath khuli rakho. Har text pehle wahan padho. Yahan tumhe summaries, explanations, practice aur model answers milenge, sab hamare apne words mein.
3.1 Padhne se pehle: hamare aas-paas ke hand fans
Garmi ki kisi chipchipi dopahar ka pichhla power cut yaad karo. Shayad kisi ne hand fan uthaya hoga: bune hue bamboo ka gol fan, mudi hui palm leaf, ya sile hue kapde ka chaukor tukda jo apni dandi par ghoomta hai. Hindi mein ise पंखा (pankha) kehte hain. Kai Bengali gharon mein ise haat-pakha kehte hain, aur Tamil mein yeh visiri hai. Tumhari language mein ise kya kehte hain, aur tumhare ghar wala fan kis cheez se bana hai?
Hand fans har jagah alag dikhte hain kyunki log unhe usi cheez se banate hain jo aas-paas ugti hai ya banti hai. Shape se yeh bhi tay hota hai ki fan kaise use hoga: zyadatar fans hilaaye jaate hain, lekin kuch apne handle par ghumaaye jaate hain. Fig. 3.1 chaar common shapes dikhata hai.
3/3Teen fans hilaaye jaate hain; flag fan apni rod par ghumaaya jaata hai.
Chaar hand fans ek line mein khade hain, har ek chhote handle par. Left se: rings aur spokes ke bune pattern wala round fan, pleated aadhe gol mein khula folding fan, lambi rod ke ek side par lage patterned kapde ke chaukor tukde wala flag fan, aur ribs wala leaf-shaped fan. Pehle step mein sirf shapes ke naam dikhte hain: round, folding, flag aur leaf. Doosre step mein har ek ke neeche material aata hai: bamboo, palm leaf, cloth ya grass, aur palm leaf. Teesre step mein curved arrows dikhate hain ki har fan kaise use hota hai: round, folding aur leaf fans side se side hilaaye jaate hain, jabki flag fan apni rod ke around ghumaaya jaata hai.
3.1.1 Padhne se pehle jaanne wale words
Essay mein chhe useful words aate hain. Pehle unse ek naye context mein milo.
Unhone ek indigenous tareeka chuna, apne purvajon ki tarah kinaaron par local patthar lagaye, lekin saath mein ek innovative touch bhi joda: ek chhota solar pump. Unka banaya channels ka map bahut intricate tha, jismein darjanon chhoti-chhoti branches thin. Jab monsoon ne talaab phir se bhar diya, to us nazaare ne daadi ki purani yaadein invoked kar deen: bachpan mein woh wahan tairti thin.

3.2 Reading for meaning: essay ko samjho
Winds of Change ek informative essay hai, story nahi. Ismein koi characters ya plot nahi hai. Balki yeh ek guided tour ki tarah aage badhta hai. Yeh pankha word ki history se shuru hota hai, alag-alag regions ke fans dekhta hai, aur aakhir mein batata hai ki aaj is craft ke saamne kya mushkil hai aur use kya bacha sakta hai. Tumhari textbook author ka naam nahi batati.
Pehle essay ko ek baar big picture ke liye padho. Phir Fig. 3.2 aur neeche diye summaries ki madad se uske paanch parts dimaag mein baitha lo.
5/5Craft ko celebrate karne se woh zinda reh sakta hai.
Paanch numbered boxes upar se neeche ek ke neeche ek rakhe hain, arrows se jude hain, aur right mein printed page numbers hain. Step 1 box 1 ko highlight karta hai: naam, origin aur shuru ke uses, page 70. Step 2 box 2 jodta hai: trade aur local styles, pages 70 se 71. Step 3 box 3 jodta hai: regional fans ka tour, pages 71 se 72. Step 4 box 4 jodta hai: technology se badlaav, pages 72 se 73. Step 5 box 5 jodta hai: bachaane ke liye celebrate karo, page 73, aur ab essay ka poora raasta dikh jaata hai.
3.2.1 Naam aur sabse purane pankhe
Essay ek word history se shuru hota hai. Pankha word pankh se aaya hai, yaani chidiya ka par. Yeh link samajhna aasaan hai, kyunki fan bhi hawa ko waise hi maarta hai jaise ek wing. Ancient India mein feathers se saja chhota fan pankhi kehlata tha, jabki pankha har tarah ke fan ka naam ban gaya.
Hand fan kitna purana hai? Writer art se evidence deta hai. Maharashtra ki Ajanta caves ki Buddhist wall paintings mein pankhis dikhte hain.Tumhari textbook in paintings ko 2nd century CE ka batati hai. Ajanta caves kai sadiyon mein kaati aur paint ki gayi thin, lagbhag 2nd century BCE se late 5th century CE tak. Fans purani sculptures, carvings aur embroidery mein bhi dikhte hain.
Shuru ke fans sirf aaram ke liye nahi the. Temple ke priests unhe pooja mein use karte the, aur royal courts mein attendants raajaaon ko hawa karte the. Kuch fans itne chhote the ki mutthi mein chhup jaayen; kuch itne bade the ki unhe jhulaana bhaari physical kaam tha.
3.2.2 Trade se local styles tak
Doosra idea trade ka hai. Vyapaari pankhe door-door ke markets tak le gaye, jahan kharidaar unhe waise hi keemti maante the jaise aaj log kisi designer label ko maante hain. Thandak dene wala ek simple tool style aur culture ki pehchaan ban gaya tha.
Writer ka dikhaya contrast dekho: fans ka use poore India mein ek jaisa tha, lekin unka look local tha. Ek town ke fans ko agle gaon ke fans se alag karta tha unka material aur decoration. Kisi region ki choice teen cheezon par depend karti thi. Uski zameen (aas-paas kya ugta ya milta tha), uska culture (logon ko kya sundar lagta tha) aur uske rituals (pooja mein fans kaise use hote the).
Yahin se writer ka central claim aata hai: fan banane ka tareeka us region ke culture ko dikhata hai jo use banata hai. Aage ka tour isi ka evidence hai.
3.2.3 India ke pankhon ka ek tour
Essay ka sabse lamba part state se state ghoomta hai. Har detail ratne ki zaroorat nahi, lekin exam questions aksar examples poochhte hain. Table 3.2 unhe ek jagah jama karta hai.
| Region | Fan | Kya khaas hai |
|---|---|---|
| Rajasthan | appliqué fan | kapde ki shapes jo ek backing cloth par sili jaati hain |
| Rajasthan | zardozi fan | gold thread mein bhaari embroidery |
| Rajasthan | temple fan | lambe handle par engraved brass |
| Rajasthan | painted fan | pictures se painted cardboard; bhagwan ko chadhaya jaata hai |
| Gujarat | mirror-work fan | pure cotton jismein chhote mirrors jade hote hain; ghar se kaam karne wali auratein cross-stitch embroidery jodti hain |
| Gujarat | bead fan | poore par beadwork aur silver handle; wall décor ki tarah use hota hai |
| Kutch (Gujarat) | leather fan | haath se sila leather, kinaaron par thread aur wool |
| West Bengal | sola fan | sola plant ke naram safed core ko kaat kar banaya jaata hai |
| West Bengal | tal patar pankha | halka palm-leaf fan jo lagbhag har ghar mein milta hai |
| Uttar Pradesh | phadh fan | gold, silver zari, silk aur satin ki frills |
| Odisha | palm-leaf fan | size mein bada |
| Bihar | bamboo fan | rangeen aur mazboot |
| Tribal communities | kai local styles | bamboo, grass, cane aur palm leaf (silk aur brass sirf antique pieces mein); geometric patterns, aksar laal par safed |
Alag-alag facts ki jagah patterns dhoondho. Rajasthan ke fans gold embroidery se lekar engraved temple brass tak hain. Gujarat ke fans mirrors, beads aur baareek needlework ke liye jaane jaate hain. Bengal ke fans halke aur practical hain, palm leaves aur sola pith se bane. Tribal fans mein bamboo, grass aur bold geometric designs hote hain. Har fan ek region ke resources, skills aur beliefs saath leke chalta hai, aur writer ka claim bilkul yahi hai. Essay yeh bhi jodta hai ki apni umar aur kami (scarcity) ki wajah se Uttar Pradesh, Odisha aur Bihar ke fans poore desh mein famous ho gaye hain.
3.2.4 Winds of change: decline aur revival
Essay ke aakhri part mein mood badal jaata hai. Ab machines hamare ghar thande karti hain, aur writer dekhta hai ki yeh badlaav dono taraf asar karta hai.
- Kya kho raha hai. Har jagah electric fans, coolers aur air conditioners hain, isliye kam logon ko hand fan ki zaroorat hai. Pankhon se judi skills, designs aur customs chupchaap gaayab ho sakti hain.
- Kya mila hai. Fan banana ab sirf family ki aadat nahi raha; yeh ek business hai. Isse kai artisans ko kam se kam kuch income milti hai, aur naye designs ne demand ko thoda badhaya bhi hai.
Is craft ko kaise bachaya ja sakta hai? Writer ka jawab ek chain ki tarah kaam karta hai:
- Log pankhon ko celebrate karte hain: unke peeche ki kahaniyan seekhte hain aur skill ki tareef karte hain.
- Banane walon ko apna kaam dikhane ka ek stage milta hai, aur craft ke apne fans phir se ban jaate hain.
- Bikri se banane walon ko pakki income milti hai, jise essay sustainable livelihood kehta hai.
- Workshops, craft exhibitions mein bhi aur unse bahar bhi, yeh message naye logon tak pahunchaati hain.
3.2.5 Themes, message aur title
- Craft as identity. Kisi region ka fan uski zameen, uske beliefs aur uski pasand dikhata hai.
- Change over time. Fans temples aur courts se gharon tak aaye, aur gharon se deewaron aur dukaan ki shelves tak.
- Heritage at risk. Nayi technology purani skills ko chupchaap side kar sakti hai, kisi ko pata bhi nahi chalta.
- Hope through action. Celebration, workshops aur fairs craft aur uske banane walon, dono ko zinda rakh sakte hain.
Pankha, tab aur ab
Tab
- temples mein bhagwan aur courts mein raajaaon ko hawa karta tha
- aam gharon mein roz use hota tha
- families apne use ke liye banati thin
- trade routes par stylish saamaan ki tarah le jaaya jaata tha
Ab
- zyadatar decorative, aksar deewaron par latka hua
- thandak ke liye iski jagah electric fans aur coolers aa gaye
- business ki tarah banaya aur becha jaata hai
- craft fairs, exhibitions aur workshops mein dikhaya jaata hai
Title do levels par kaam karta hai. Literally, pankha wind yaani hawa banata hai. Figuratively, winds of change ek idiom hai un forces ke liye jo logon ke jeene ka tareeka badal dete hain. Essay dono dikhata hai: fan ki hawa, aur woh changes (technology, trade, naye designs) jo is craft ko aur use banane walon ki zindagi ko nayi shape de rahe hain.

Practice 3.2: Winds of Change par sawaal: answers ke saath
Essay ke facts poore karo. Kutch haath se sile fans banata hai. Bengal ke palm-leaf fan ko kehte hain. Bihar rangeen, mazboot fans ke liye jaana jaata hai. Gujarat ke bead fans ka handle ka hota hai.
Answer dekho
Answer (1) leather, (2) tal patar pankha, (3) bamboo, (4) silver
Kutch: leather; Bengal: tal patar pankha; Bihar: bamboo; Gujarat ke bead fans: silver handle.Woh paragraph phir se padho jismein pankhe trade routes par safar karte hain aur har jagah apni tarah ka fan banati hai (page 70). Questions ke answers do.
True ya false: paragraph ke hisaab se har region apne fans bilkul ek hi tarah banata tha.
Answer dekho
Answer Galat
False. Use har jagah milta-julta tha, lekin har town aur gaon ne apne materials aur designs develop kiye.Paragraph mein woh phrase dhoondho jo fact nahi balki opinion deta hai, aur batao tumhe kaise pata chala.
Solution dikhao
Answerexotic and stylish
The words exotic and stylish are an opinion. They describe how people felt about the fans, which cannot be measured or proved, and other people could disagree. A fact, such as the materials used, can be checked.
Writer kehta hai ki poore India mein fans milte-julte tareeke se use hote the. India ke climate ya customs ke baare mein jo tum jaante ho, uski madad se ek reason suggest karo.
Solution dikhao
Most of India is hot for much of the year, so everyone needed a simple way to cool down. Shared customs, such as fanning gods in temples and honoured guests at home, also spread across regions.
Assertion (A): Rajasthan aur Bengal ke fans bahut alag dikhte hain. Reason (R): Rajasthan aur Bengal ke log fans ko bilkul alag kaamon ke liye use karte the.
Answer dekho
Answer (C) A sahi hai; R galat hai.
A sahi hai: regions ke fans material aur design mein alag hain. R galat hai: paragraph kehta hai ki poore India mein fans lagbhag ek hi tarah use hote the. Farq local materials aur pasand se aata hai, alag uses se nahi.
Technology aur hand fan ke business banne wala paragraph phir se padho (pages 72–73). Questions ke answers do.
Paragraph pankhe ke decline ke liye ek force ko zimmedaar maanta hai. Uska naam batao aur batao ki woh craft ko kaise nuksaan pahunchata hai.
Solution dikhao
Electric fans and coolers have taken over the job of cooling, so fewer people buy or use hand fans. The skills and customs around them may slowly disappear.
Paragraph ke hisaab se pankhon ki demand thodi badhi hai. Is chhoti si badhat ki wajah kya hai?
Solution dikhao
The new versions of the pankha that makers are now creating: fresh designs and uses attract buyers who would not want an ordinary old-style fan.
Paragraph pankhe ke role mein kaun sa change describe karta hai?
Answer dekho
Answer (B) personal use se commercial business tak
Jo fans kabhi apne ghar ke liye bante the, ab bechne ke liye bante hain, aur isse artisans ko income milti hai. Paragraph plastic ya sirf temple use ke baare mein kuch nahi kehta.Paragraph mein livelihood ka kaun sa meaning fit hota hai?
Answer dekho
Answer (C) a means of earning a living
Livelihood woh kaam hai jisse insaan ka khaana, ghar aur zarooratein chalti hain, yaani rozi-roti. Yahan fans bechne se artisans ko kuch income milti hai.
Title Winds of Change ka ek literal aur ek figurative meaning hai. Dono explain karo.
Solution dikhao
Literal: a pankha creates a breeze, so the essay is about makers of wind.
Figurative: winds of change means forces that transform life. The essay traces such forces (trade, technology, commercial demand, new designs) that changed the pankha from a temple and household object into a decorative craft and a source of income. So the title captures both the object and its changing story.
Essay se do examples do jo dikhayein ki fan ka design uske region ka culture dikhata hai.
Solution dikhao
- Rajasthan's temple fans of engraved brass and painted fans offered to gods reflect the region's temple traditions.
- Gujarat's cotton fans with mirror work and bead fans reflect its famous embroidery and bead crafts.
- Bengal's light palm-leaf fans, kept in almost every home, reflect a hot, humid climate and the region's palm trees.
Koi bhi do examples, design aur culture ke link ke explanation ke saath, poore marks dilate hain.
Hand fans Indian gharon se gaayab hone ke khatre mein hain. Traditional skills ko naye designs ke saath milaane se kaise madad mil sakti hai? Reasons ke saath apni raay do.
Solution dikhao
A balance of old and new could save the craft. Traditional skills, such as weaving, embroidery and engraving, give each fan its identity, and losing them would make the craft meaningless.
New designs bring buyers. A fan that doubles as wall art, a gift box design, a lighter travel fan or fresh colours can attract young customers who would never buy an ordinary hand fan. The essay itself notes a small rise in demand thanks to new versions.
So artisans should keep the core techniques but adapt shapes, sizes and uses. This keeps both the heritage and the income alive.
Fan banane ki workshops is craft ko zinda rakhne mein kaise madad kar sakti hain?
Solution dikhao
- Visitors see how much skill a fan needs, so they value and buy it.
- Young people can learn the craft and may take it up.
- Artisans earn fees and meet buyers, which supports their livelihood.
- Awareness spreads beyond the region.
Writer pankhon ko celebrate karne ka suggestion kyun deta hai? Artisans aur craft ko isse kya faayda hoga?
Solution dikhao
Celebrating means valuing the stories, culture and skill behind each fan. When people value something, they are willing to pay a fair price for it.
Artisans gain a platform to show their work and a steady income. The craft gains popularity, so it is passed on instead of fading away.
Jo pankha kabhi ek raja ko hawa karta tha, woh ab living-room ki deewar par latka hai. Yeh safar humein kya batata hai ki aaj India mein traditional crafts ki value kaise ki jaati hai?
Solution dikhao
The pankha has moved from need to display. Once it cooled gods, kings and ordinary families; now machines do that work, and the fan survives as a symbol of heritage on walls and in exhibitions.
Many traditional crafts share this path. Their practical value falls, but their cultural and artistic value rises. This is both a loss and a chance: fewer people use them daily, yet they can be sold as art, gifts and souvenirs.
The change shows that crafts survive only if people consciously value and buy them.
3.3 Context mein vocabulary aur structures
Essay se chaar language points nikalte hain: and se jude words ke pairs, fixed expressions, collocations aur present perfect tense.
3.3.1 'and' se jude word pairs
Writers aksar do related words ko and se jodte hain taaki description aur poora lage. Essay aise pairs se bhara hai: dobara padhte waqt unhe dhoondho. Zyadatar pairs groups mein aate hain. Kuch appearance (dikhaawat) describe karte hain, kuch places ke naam lete hain aur kuch materials ki list dete hain.
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Appearance | bright and colourful; smooth and shiny; neat and simple |
| Place | towns and cities; hills and valleys; indoors and outdoors |
| Material | cotton and silk; clay and straw; iron and steel |
Zyadatar pairs ko ulta karne se koi nuksaan nahi hota: silk and cotton utna hi sahi hai jitna cotton and silk. Agle group ke saath aisa nahi ho sakta.
3.3.2 Fixed expressions
Kuch pairs jame hue (frozen) hote hain. Unka order kabhi nahi badalta, aur saath milkar unka matlab aksar aisa hota hai jo do words se guess nahi kiya ja sakta. Hum bread and butter kehte hain, kabhi butter and bread nahi. Inhe fixed expressions kehte hain. Ek kaam ki baat: chhota word aksar pehle aata hai, jaise salt and pepper ya safe and sound mein.
| Expression | Matlab | Example |
|---|---|---|
| high and dry | phans jaana, koi madad karne wala na ho | When the last bus left early, we were left high and dry at the stop. |
| cut and run | mushkil ka saamna karne ki jagah jaldi se bhaag jaana | The thieves heard the dog and decided to cut and run. |
| facts and figures | sahi details aur numbers | Back your speech on plastic waste with facts and figures. |
| all and sundry | sab log, bina kisi exception ke | The village fair was open to all and sundry. |
| wear and tear | roz ke use se hone wala dheere-dheere ka nuksaan | Ten seasons of wear and tear finally split the old cricket bat. |
| time and again | baar-baar; bahut aksar | Time and again, Nani reminded us to switch off the fan. |
| through thick and thin | achhe aur bure, dono waqt mein | True friends stand by you through thick and thin. |
| hard and fast | pakka aur sakht (rules ke liye) | There is no hard and fast rule about the length of a poem. |
3.3.3 Collocations
Collocation words ka woh group hai jise bolne wale naturally saath use karte hain. Grammar do a photo ko mana nahi karti, lekin English bolne wale take a photo kehte hain. Essay mein aise examples hain jaise sustainable livelihood (adjective + noun), aesthetically pleasing (adverb + adjective) aur appreciating the culture (verb + noun).
| Pattern | Natural | Galat lagta hai |
|---|---|---|
| verb + noun | make a decision, take a photo, pay attention | do a decision, make a photo |
| verb + noun | keep a promise, catch a bus, miss a train | hold a promise, lose a train |
| adjective + noun | heavy rain, strong tea, bright sunshine | strong rain, powerful tea |
| adverb + adjective | deeply grateful, highly skilled, fully aware | strongly grateful, greatly skilled |

3.3.4 Present perfect tense
Yeh sentence dekho: Artisans have kept the craft alive for centuries. Craft ko zinda rakhna bahut pehle shuru hua, lekin uska result (ek zinda craft) abhi matter karta hai. Yeh present perfect tense hai. Yeh past ke kisi action ko present se jodta hai.
Form: has ya have + past participle (verb ki third form). Regular verbs mein -ed judta hai (craft → crafted, evolve → evolved). Irregular verbs yaad karne padte hain: make → made, weave → woven, sell → sold, see → seen, go → gone, teach → taught.
| I, you, we, they | he, she, it | |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | have finished | has finished |
| Negative | have not (haven't) finished | has not (hasn't) finished |
| Question | Have you finished? | Has she finished? |
Ise kab use karein:
- Past ka koi action jiska result abhi matter karta hai: I have painted the fan, so do not touch it.
- Abhi-abhi khatam hua action, aksar just, already ya yet ke saath: The weaver has just finished the border.
- Life experience, aksar ever ya never ke saath: Have you ever seen a sola fan?
- Koi baat jo past mein shuru hui aur ab bhi sach hai, for ya since ke saath: My aunt has made bamboo fans since 2015.
Ise yesterday, last week ya in 2010 jaise finished time ke saath mat use karo. I saw the craft fair yesterday kaho, I have seen the craft fair yesterday nahi. Fig. 3.3 yeh farq ek timeline par dikhata hai.
2/3Koi finished time nahi, aur result abhi matter karta hai: present perfect.
Ek horizontal timeline left mein past se right mein future tak jaati hai, aur ek dashed line now ko mark karti hai. Pehle step mein past mein ek dot hai, jis par yesterday aur finished time likha hai, aur upar sentence hai I painted a fan yesterday. Doosre step mein sentence ban jaata hai I have painted a fan; dot ke saath koi time word nahi hai, aur ek curved arrow use now line tak le jaata hai, jis par result now likha hai. Teesre step mein sentence hai She has made fans since 2019; ek moti band 2019 se lekar now tak jaati hai, jis par still true likha hai.

3.4 Listening, speaking aur writing
3.4.1 Listen and respond: gift chunna
Class mein tumhare teacher ek conversation play karenge ya padhenge, jismein do young log gift ke liye ek pankha chunte hain. Skill hai detail ke liye sunna: kaun kya kehta hai, aur aakhir mein woh kya decide karte hain. Neeche di conversation se practice karo. Kisi dost ya family member se kaho ki tumhare saath ise zor se padhe, jabki tum text ki taraf na dekho, phir questions ke answers do.

Answer (C) Iske tootne ke chances kam hain.
3.4.2 Speaking: khud ko ek fan maan kar bolo
Chaar logon ke group mein kaam karo. Har insaan ek tarah ka fan banta hai: hand fan, ceiling fan, table fan ya battery se chalne wala chhota handheld fan. Us fan ki tarah lagbhag ek minute bolo ("I am…"), is plan ke hisaab se:
- Opening: tum kaun ho.
- Body: tum kaise dikhte ho (shape, size, material) aur kaise kaam karte ho.
- Strengths: tumhe kis baat par garv hai.
- Honesty: ek kamzori.
- Closing: tumhe khaas kya banata hai.
3.4.3 Writing: kisi artefact ka factual description
Writing task mein tumhe ek artefact describe karna hai, yaani haath se bani koi cheez, jo tumne craft class mein banayi ho ya kisi se banana seekha ho. Factual description sirf wahi batata hai jo sach hai aur check kiya ja sakta hai. Ismein beautiful, amazing ya I love it jaise opinions aur feelings nahi aate.
- Title: object ka naam.
- Introduction: object kya hai, kisne banaya, aur kab ya kahan.
- Features: shape, size (units ke saath), colour, texture aur parts.
- Materials: woh kis cheez se bana hai.
- Process: main steps order mein, sequence words ke saath (first, next, finally). Passive voice aksar kaam aati hai: The clay was kneaded…
- Use and care: woh kis kaam aata hai aur uska dhyaan kaise rakhein.
3.4.4 Text se aage seekhna
Apne region ka koi craft present karo. Apne area ka ek art ya craft item chuno (koi toy, textile, pot ya painting style) aur ek chhoti presentation plan karo. Chhe slides ka plan ise organised rakhta hai:
- Title slide: object ka naam aur ek saaf photo ya drawing.
- Yeh kaisa dikhta hai: shape, size, colour aur appearance.
- Materials: yeh kis cheez se bana hai, aur woh cheezein kahan se aati hain.
- Making: main steps, order mein.
- History: yeh kis region ka hai, traditionally kaise use hota tha, koi origin story, aur yeh kaise badla hai.
- Today: aaj ise safely aur achhe se kaise use kiya ja sakta hai, aur log iske banane walon ko kaise support kar sakte hain.
Apna hand fan banao. Chaar-chaar ke groups mein ek simple paper fan banao, use display karo aur samjhao ki tumne use kaise banaya. Bolte waqt sequence words use karo. Fig. 3.4 tareeka dikhata hai.
4/4Pleats ko aadhe gol (half-circle) mein phailao.
Chaar panels left se right ek line mein hain, arrows se jude hue. Panel 1, decorate, mein paper ki ek sheet hai jis par circles aur ek zigzag line bani hai. Panel 2, fold, mein sheet patli pleats mein mudi hai jo aage-peeche zigzag karti hain. Panel 3, tie, mein pleats dabakar ek patle stack mein hain, ek end par tape lipta hai aur uske neeche do chapti sticks hain. Panel 4, open, mein pleats tape wale end aur sticks ke upar aadhe gol mein phaili hain. Har step ek aur panel ko roshan karta hai.

Ab usi scene ki ek painting ki kalpana karo. Dono mein kya common hai? Dono ko koi plan karta hai, dono colour aur shape use karte hain, aur dono hamare feel karne ka tareeka badal dete hain.
Inhe zor se bolkar compare karne ki practice karo. Comparison ke liye kaam ke patterns:
- Just as a gardener prepares the soil, so an artist prepares the canvas.
- Both flowerbeds and pictures bring many colours together in one frame.
- A garden needs careful planning; in the same way, a painting needs a sketch first.
- Like a quiet flowerbed, a good picture also calms a tired mind.
Painter ke studio ke teen words poem padhne mein madad karenge. Palette woh board hai jis par painter colours milata hai. Hue ek colour hai, ya uska koi ek khaas shade. Canvas woh mazboot kapda hai jis par picture paint hoti hai; poem mein yeh word khud painting ke liye bhi aata hai. Fig. 3.5 teenon dikhata hai.
3/3Canvas woh jagah hai jahan picture aakhir mein dikhti hai.
Left mein ek curved wooden palette hai jismein thumb hole hai, paint ke paanch dhabbe hain aur uske upar ek brush rakha hai; label hai palette. Beech mein green ke teen swatches hain, yellowish green, plain green aur bluish green; label hai three hues of green. Right mein ek easel par canvas rakha hai. Pehle step mein sirf palette saaf dikhta hai aur baaki halka hai. Doosre step mein teenon green swatches aur unka label aate hain. Teesre step mein canvas par ek simple garden picture ban jaati hai, ek lawn aur teen phool, aur label canvas dikhta hai.
Left mein koi item tap karo, phir right mein uska match.

3.6 Reading for appreciation: poem ko samjho
Canvas of Soil Maya Anthony ki ek chhoti lyric hai: chaar-chaar lines ke teen stanzas. Yeh ek bade comparison par tiki hai. Garden ek painting hai, aur gardener uska artist. Kyunki yeh comparison poori poem mein chalta hai, ise extended metaphor kehte hain.
Apni textbook mein poem ko do-teen baar zor se padho. Lines ke end par rhyming pairs suno, aur dhyaan do ki lagbhag har image ek artist ke studio se aati hai. Fig. 3.6 painter ki duniya ko garden ki duniya par map karta hai.
5/5Stanza 3: gardener hi artist hai.
Do columns aamne-saamne hain, left wale par heading Painting aur right wale par Garden, aur har row double-headed arrows se judi hai. Step 1 pehla pair dikhata hai, palette aur earth ya soil. Step 2 brushstrokes aur seeds jodta hai. Step 3 colours ya hues aur blossoms jodta hai. Step 4 canvas aur plot of land jodta hai. Step 5 aakhri pair, painter aur gardener, jodta hai, aur ab extended metaphor ke paanchon links ek saath dikhte hain.
3.6.1 Stanza 1: ek picture jo abhi paint nahi hui
Pehle stanza mein abhi kuch nahi khila hai. Garden sirf upjaau mitti, dabe hue seeds aur gardener ki ummeedon ke roop mein hai, bilkul waise jaise painting pehle palette par paint aur artist ke dimaag mein ek plan ke roop mein hoti hai. Do metaphors yeh idea aage le jaate hain. Mitti painter ka palette hai ('Palette of earth'), gehri aur un colours se bhari jo use hone ka intezaar kar rahe hain. Seeds brushstrokes hain ('Brushstrokes of seeds'): har ek dhyaan se rakha gaya hai, aur saath milkar woh ek picture banayenge.
Phrase 'planted true' skill aur imaandaari ka ehsaas jodta hai: seeds sahi tareeke se, sahi gehraai par boye gaye hain, koi shortcut nahi. Stanza aage spring ki taraf dekhkar khatam hota hai, woh season jo colours ko saamne layega. Iska mood shaant ummeed aur dhairya se intezaar ka hai.
3.6.2 Stanza 2: picture zinda ho uthti hai
Spring ne apna kaam kar diya hai. Phool khil gaye hain, aur garden ab ek poori bani painting jaisa dikhta hai. Poet scene mein movement daalta hai: blossoms subah ki roshni mein naachte lagte hain, jo personification hai ('Dancing in the morning light'). 'Blossoms bloom' mein baar-baar aane wali b sound alliteration hai; yeh humein dheema kar deti hai taaki hum phoolon par dhyaan dein.
Stanza teen colours ka naam leta hai, green, red aur blue, jo garden ke saare shades ki range ko represent karte hain. Ant mein yeh nature ki tareef ek aise artist ki tarah karta hai jiska kaam kabhi purana nahi padta: har season aur har subah picture nayi hoti hai.
3.6.3 Stanza 3: jahan art aur life milte hain
Aakhri stanza nazar ko aur phailata hai. Zameen ka har plot ek bada canvas ban jaata hai ('Each plot, a canvas wide'), jo uska gardener jo bhi banaye uske liye taiyaar hai. Poet kehta hai ki garden mein art aur life milte hain: sundarta asli hai aur badh rahi hai, sirf paint ki hui nahi. Aakhri lines credit un logon ko deti hain jo mitti par kaam karte hain, kyunki unke haathon mein gardens paintings ban jaate hain.
Aakhri word, still, ko dobara dekhna chahiye. Iska matlab 'even now' (ab bhi) ya 'always' (hamesha) ho sakta hai, yaani gardens paintings bane rehte hain. Yeh still life ki bhi yaad dilata hai, yaani phoolon ya cheezon ki painting, aur shaanti ka ehsaas bhi deta hai. Ek chhota sa word teenon ideas samete hai.
3.6.4 Poetic devices
| Device | Iska matlab | Is poem mein |
|---|---|---|
| Metaphor | like ya as ke bina comparison | earth palette ki tarah, seeds brushstrokes ki tarah, plot canvas ki tarah |
| Extended metaphor | ek comparison jo poori poem mein chalta hai | garden painting ki tarah aur gardener painter ki tarah, pehle stanza se aakhri tak |
| Imagery | woh words jo mann mein pictures banate hain | colours, brushstrokes, khulte phool, subah ki roshni, green ke shades |
| Alliteration | paas-paas ke words ki shuruaat mein ek hi consonant sound | 'Blossoms bloom' mein b sounds |
| Personification | non-human cheezon ko insaanon jaise actions dena | roshni mein naachte phool |
| Rhyme scheme | lines ke rhyme karne wale endings ka pattern | har stanza mein AABB (rhyming couplets) |
| Tone | poet ka attitude | admiring, appreciative |
| Mood | reader kya feel karta hai | cheerful, joyful, peaceful |
| Speaker | poem ki awaaz | garden se pyaar karne wala jo painter ki nazar se dekhta hai, shayad ek gardener |
Har stanza mein do rhyming couplets hain: lines 1 aur 2 rhyme karti hain (AA), phir lines 3 aur 4 (BB). Jaise pehle stanza mein deep ka rhyme seep se hai. Yeh saaf, regular pattern dhyaan aur tarteeb se kiye gaye kaam wali poem par jachta hai.
3.6.5 Poem ek allegory ki tarah
Allegory do levels par kaam karti hai: ek surface meaning aur ek gehra meaning jo writer khulkar nahi kehta. Surface par Canvas of Soil ek garden ke baare mein hai. Neeche, garden life aur duniya ke baare mein bade ideas ko represent kar sakta hai.
Meaning ke do levels
Surface meaning
- Seeds boye jaate hain aur spring ka intezaar karte hain.
- Kai colours ke phool saath-saath khilte hain.
- Garden seasons ke saath badalta hai.
- Gardeners plots ko paintings mein badal dete hain.
Gehra meaning
- Life chhote se shuru hoti hai; growth ke liye dhairya aur ummeed chahiye.
- Diversity tab sundar hai jab woh harmony mein rehti hai.
- Life growth, aaraam aur renewal ke cycles mein chalti hai.
- Insaan ki mehnat aur care life ko kuch sundar bana sakti hai.
3.6.6 Themes aur title
- Nature as an artist: garden ek painting hai jo khud ko naya karti rehti hai.
- Gardening as a creative art: bona aur dekhbhaal karna design ke kaam hain.
- Patience and hope: sundarta intezaar ke baad hi aati hai.
- Harmony in diversity: kai colours milkar picture banate hain.
- Art and life together: asli, zinda sundarta kisi bhi painting ki barabari kar sakti hai.
Title Canvas of Soil painter ki duniya (canvas) ko gardener ki duniya (soil) se jodta hai. Yeh turant batata hai ki zameen khud woh surface hai jis par picture banti hai, paint ki jagah seeds aur phoolon se. Teen words mein yeh poem ke extended metaphor ka saar de deta hai.

Poet seeds ko brushstrokes se compare karta hai. Kaun se sentence mein bhi metaphor hai?
Answer dekho
Answer (B) The classroom was a zoo after the bell rang.
B kehta hai ki classroom ek zoo was, yaani like ya as ke bina seedha comparison. A simile hai, C personification hai aur D alliteration hai.Phrase 'planted true' gardener ke baare mein kya suggest karta hai?
Solution dikhao
It suggests care, skill and honesty. The seeds are sown correctly, in the right place and at the right depth, so the garden will grow as planned.
Stanza spring ki taraf kyun dekhta hai?
Solution dikhao
The seeds are still underground. Spring is when they will sprout and bloom, so it is the season when the garden's colours will finally appear.
Comparison poora karo: soil is to a garden as a palette is to ___.
Answer dekho
Answer (C) a painting
Soil mein woh hota hai jo garden banta hai; palette mein woh paint hota hai jo painting banta hai.
Stanza 3 phir se padho (yeh 'Each plot, a canvas wide…' se shuru hota hai). Questions ke answers do.
Apne words mein samjhao ki garden mein plot kya hota hai.
Solution dikhao
A plot is a marked-out piece or bed of land, prepared for planting.
Kaun si lines ki jodi is stanza ki pehli do lines jaisa hi rhyme pattern follow karti hai?
Answer dekho
Answer (A) The kite flew high / across the sky
Stanza ki pehli do lines aapas mein rhyme karti hain (AA). Sirf high aur sky rhyme karte hain.Word wide kaun si picture banata hai? Kya small bhi utna hi achha kaam karta?
Solution dikhao
Wide suggests open space with room for many plants, colours and possibilities, like a large blank canvas waiting for a bold picture. Small would shrink that sense of possibility, and it would also break the rhyme with the next line.
Stanza ke hisaab se gardens ko paintings mein kaun badalta hai? Poet ant mein unki tareef kyun karta hoga?
Solution dikhao
The people who work the soil, the gardeners. Ending with them reminds us that a garden's beauty is not an accident: it is the result of human skill, care and labour.
Poet ke har comparison ke liye ek reason do.
A gardener is like a painter because…
Solution dikhao
both plan and create a beautiful picture, one with paint and the other with plants.
The earth is like a palette because…
Solution dikhao
it holds everything that will become the picture, just as a palette holds the paints.
Seeds are like brushstrokes because…
Solution dikhao
each is placed with care, and together they form the final image.
A plot of land is like a canvas because…
Solution dikhao
it is the surface on which the picture is created.
Tumhe kya lagta hai, poet seeds ko sirf line mein lage seeds kehne ki jagah brushstrokes kyun kehta hai? Yeh choice gardening ke baare mein kya batati hai?
Solution dikhao
A brushstroke is a deliberate act of an artist: it has a place, a colour and a purpose. By calling seeds brushstrokes, the poet shows that sowing is also deliberate and creative.
The gardener decides where each plant goes, which colours will stand together and how the whole bed will look. Like a painter, the gardener cannot see the final picture at first but works towards it stroke by stroke. So gardening becomes design, not just labour.
Stanza 3 garden ko ek aisi jagah ki tarah dikhata hai jahan art aur life milte hain. Garden natural hai, man-made hai ya dono? Apne answer se samjhao ki poet nature aur human creativity ko kaise dekhta hai.
Solution dikhao
Both. A garden is alive (it grows, blooms and changes), yet its layout is shaped by human hands. So the poet sees no wall between nature and creativity: nature supplies the life, and the gardener supplies the design.
Poem ki woh do images chuno jinhe tum sabse saaf dekh sakte ho. Batao tumhe kya dikhta hai aur samjhao ki har image kyun kaam karti hai.
Solution dikhao
Sample answer. First, the flowers dancing in the morning light: I see blossoms swaying as low sunlight catches them. It works because it adds movement and light to colour.
Second, the earth as a palette: I picture dark, damp soil, like a board loaded with paint. It works because it turns something plain into something full of possibility.
Koi bhi do images credit dilati hain agar tum picture describe karo aur technique samjhao (colour, movement, roshni ya painting wala comparison).
Maan lo poet ne stanza 2 ke colours mein yellow ka naam bhi liya hota. Isse imagery mein kya judta?
Solution dikhao
Yellow is the colour of sunshine, marigolds and sunflowers. It would have added warmth and brightness, matching the morning light in the same stanza. Red, blue and yellow are also the three primary colours of paint, so naming yellow would have completed a painter's basic palette.
Aakhri line garden ki sundarta kitne samay tak rehti hai, iske baare mein kya suggest karti hai?
Solution dikhao
Through the word still, the poet suggests that gardens remain paintings even now and always. Though each flower fades, gardeners keep renewing the picture season after season, so the beauty is timeless.
Samjhao ki Canvas of Soil poem ke liye sahi title kyun hai.
Solution dikhao
The title combines a painting word (canvas) with a gardening word (soil). It tells us that the ground is the surface on which a garden-artist paints with seeds and flowers.
This is exactly the poem's extended metaphor: earth as palette, seeds as brushstrokes, plots as canvases and gardeners as painters. The title therefore sums up the central idea that gardening is an art.
3.7 Words, listening, speaking aur writing
3.7.1 Colour ke shades
Poem sirf teen colours ka naam leti hai, lekin har colour ke darjanon shades hote hain. Kisi shade ka exact naam lena, sirf green ki jagah olive, tumhari writing ko aur sharp banata hai.
| Family | Shades, lagbhag light se dark tak |
|---|---|
| Blue | ice blue, sky blue, denim, cobalt, indigo, navy |
| Green | pistachio, apple green, jade, India green, olive, pine green |
| Red | salmon, scarlet, vermilion, crimson, rusty red, blood red |
Inhe jaani-pehchaani cheezon se jodo: sky blue aur saaf sardiyon ka aasmaan; denim aur tumhari jeans; navy aur school blazer; pistachio aur pista kulfi; India green aur Tiranga ki hari patti; vermilion aur sindoor; rusty red aur lohe ka purana gate.
Sahi bolo: pistachio (pi-STA-shee-oh), salmon (SAM-un; l silent hai), vermilion (ver-MIL-yun), crimson (KRIM-zun), indigo (IN-di-go). Partner ke saath koi do shades chuno aur har ek se judi do cheezon ke naam lo.
3.7.2 Context mein painting words
Yeh paragraph padho aur har bold word ka matlab context se samjho. Phir cards se check karo.
Saturday ko art club school ke verandah mein mila. Har member ne ek easel lagaya aur us par ek naya canvas clip kiya. Hamari teacher, Ms Lalremruati, ne humse ek wide tonal range explore karne ko kaha, sabse halke tints se lekar sabse gehre shadows tak. Rehan ne apni daadi ka portrait shuru kiya, aur light aur dark areas fix karne ke liye pehle ek patli, ek-colour wali underpainting par kaam kiya. Do seniors seedhiyon ke paas wali lambi deewar par Brahmaputra ka ek mural paint kar rahe the. Shaam tak corridor mein paint ki khushboo thi, aur blue ka har shade khatam ho chuka tha.
Painting words
Apne guesses zor se bolkar samjhao, kisi aise frame se: I think ___ means ___, since the paragraph mentions ___. Jaise: I think mural means a wall painting, since the paragraph mentions a long wall.

3.7.4 Speaking: flower garden ya vegetable garden?
Ghar ke garden ki do kismein
Flower garden
- ghar aur gali ko roshan kar deta hai
- bees aur butterflies ko kheenchta hai
- tyohaaron aur poojaon ke liye phool deta hai
- school ke baad mann shaant karne wali hobby
Vegetable garden
- I prefer X to Y because… (prefer + noun ya -ing form + to)
- I'd rather grow X than Y, as… (would rather + base verb + than)
- X suits me better than Y, since…
- Given the choice, I'd pick X over Y, because…
Model: I prefer a vegetable garden to a flower garden because my family could eat what we grow. If I had a choice, I'd rather have tomatoes and spinach than roses, as fresh vegetables taste better and save money. Still, I would keep a few marigolds along the edges, since gardeners say they keep some pests away.
3.7.5 Writing: ek garden ka description
Writing task mein kisi aise garden ke baare mein do ya teen paragraphs ka descriptive piece likhna hai jahan tum gaye ho, aur colour par khaas dhyaan dena hai. Achha description reader ko woh jagah dikha deta hai.
- Title jo scene set kare.
- Paragraph 1: kahan aur kab, aur tumhara pehla overall impression.
- Paragraph 2: paas se dekhi details. Dikhao ki red, blue aur green ke shades kaise saath-saath rehkar contrast banate hain, petals aur leaves chhoone mein kaise lagte hain, aur roshni colours ko kaise badalti hai.
- Paragraph 3: ek closing image aur woh feeling jo woh tumhare mann mein chhod jaati hai.
Exact shade names (crimson, olive, ice blue), sense words (velvety, rough, fragrant), aur ek-do similes ya metaphors use karo, das nahi. Fig. 3.7 ek quick planner hai: likhne se pehle har heading ke neeche do details note kar lo.
4/4Dikhao ki dhoop aur chhaanv colours ko kaise badalte hain.
Beech mein ek green circle hai jis par garden likha hai, aur usse corners ke chaar boxes tak dashed lines jaati hain. Step 1 upar-left box dikhata hai, colours, example crimson, olive ke saath. Step 2 upar-right box jodta hai, contrast, example red against green ke saath. Step 3 neeche-left box jodta hai, texture, example velvety petals ke saath. Step 4 neeche-right box jodta hai, light, example golden, shadowy ke saath, aur planner poora ho jaata hai.
3.7.6 Text se aage seekhna
Is mini-project mein kuch hafton tak gardens ko history, art aur practice ke zariye explore karna hai. Do tasks chuno: ek tasks 1–2 mein se aur ek tasks 3–4 mein se.
