Aankhen band karo aur India ke baare mein socho. Shayad tumhe barf se dhaki chotiyan, bheed bhara railway platform, kisi mandir ka aangan ya subah-subah ek machhli pakadne wali naav dikhe. Yeh unit us vishaal desh par teen chhoti khidkiyan kholti hai. Har ek, ek region aur wahan ki life ko shape karne wali ek rozmarra ki cheez par chhota sa piece hai: Goa mein bread, Coorg mein coffee aur Assam mein tea. Unit ke end mein Adrienne Rich ki poem 'The Trees' hai.

4/4Unit ek poem, 'The Trees', ke saath khatam hoti hai.

Teen cards saath-saath khade hain. Step 1 pehla card roshan karta hai: west coast par Goa, ek loaf of bread ke saath. Step 2 doosra card jodta hai: Karnataka ki Kodagu pahaadiyon mein Coorg, ek cup coffee ke saath. Step 3 teesra card jodta hai: north-east mein Assam, chai ki do pattiyon aur ek kali ke saath. Step 4 cards ke neeche ek banner jodta hai jis par poem ka naam hai, The Trees.

5.2 A Baker from Goa

Pehla glimpse ek pen-portrait hai: ek insaan ka chhota, pyaar bhara sketch, Goa ka traditional village baker, jise pader kehte hain. Yeh piece aam taur par Lucio Rodrigues ka maana jaata hai. Writer apne bachpan ko yaad karta hai, aur iski khoobsurati is baat mein hai ki woh aam subahon ko kitne pyaar se yaad karta hai. Uske tone par dhyaan do: woh longing, ummeed aur halke-phulke mazaak ke beech badalta rehta hai.

5.2.1 Part 1: Pader ke saath subahein

Ek hunar jo raaj karne walon se zyaada tika. Writer ek contrast se shuru karta hai. Uske bade-buzurg Portuguese zamaane aur uski mashhoor bread ko yaad karte hain, phir bhi yeh hunar khud raaj karne walon se zyaada tik gaya. Goa ke gaon mein aaj bhi unke bakers hain, purane ovens aaj bhi roz jalte hain, aur yeh dhandha aksar baap se bete ko milta hai. Kuch jagahon par aaj bhi subah baker ke bamboo ke dande ki awaaz uske aane ki khabar deti hai.

Din mein do baar. Writer ke bachpan mein baker ghar ke saamne se din mein do baar guzarta tha: subah bhari tokri lekar jaate hue, aur khaali tokri lekar wapas aate hue. Uske dande ki awaaz sunte hi bachche bistar se kood padte the. Unhe loaves ki parwaah nahi thi, jo maid family ke liye khareedti thi. Unhe ring ke shape wale bread-bangles chahiye the aur, kismat achhi ho to, ek khaas meethi bread.

Ek shor bhari, khushnuma entry. Writer ko har visit ek chhoti si performance ki tarah yaad hai: baker ke sir par santulit tokri, zameen par padte dande ki jhang, jhang jingle, ghar ki maalkin ke liye ek vinamra namaste, aur loaves naukar ko thamaana. Bhagaaye jaane par bhi bachche koi aisi jagah dhoondh lete the jahan se tokri mein jhaank sakein, aur writer kehta hai ki use aaj bhi us bread ki khushboo aati hai.

Brush karne par ek mazaak. Writer ek natkhat yaad jodta hai: bachche bread lapakne se pehle brush karne ki zehmat nahi uthaate the. Woh poochhta hai, daant ragadne ke liye mango ki patti kyun todein, jab tiger kabhi brush nahi karta aur garam chai ka ek cup sab kuch saaf kar deta hai? Woh apne bachpan par muskura raha hai, salaah nahi de raha.

4/4Deewar par pencil ke nishaan hisaab rakhte hain, jo mahine mein ek baar chukaaya jaata hai.

Fig. 5.2Writer ki yaadon mein pader ki ek visit.NCERT A Baker from Goa · p. 64

Left mein ek bamboo ka danda zameen par khada hai jiske upar loaves ki tokri hai; right mein ek darwaaze wala ghar hai. Step 1: dande ke neeche se sound lines failti hain, label thud, jingle. Step 2: teen loaves tokri se darwaaze tak jaate hain, label bado ke liye. Step 3: ring ke shape wale do bread-bangles dikhte hain, label bachchon ke liye. Step 4: ghar ki deewar par pencil ke tally marks dikhte hain, label monthly bill.

Purane Goans beete zamaane ki baat karte hue kya miss karte hain?
Answer dekho

Answer (A) Portuguese din aur us waqt ki bread

Woh Portuguese daur aur uske mashhoor loaves ko pyaar se yaad karte hain. Bakeries tab bhi thi; yaad ka yahi to point hai.

5.2.2 Part 2: Bread, kapde aur hisaab

Har mauke ke liye bread. Aage writer dikhata hai ki bread Goan life mein kitni gehraai tak basi hai. Shaadi ka tohfa bol, ek meethi bread, ke bina adhoora hai. Party ya daawat loaves ke bina khaali lagti hai. Beti ki engagement ki taiyaari karti maa ko sandwiches chahiye, aur Christmas aur doosre festivals mein cakes aur bolinhas chahiye. To gaon apne baker ke oven ke bina reh hi nahi sakta (Fig. 5.3).

4/4Christmas aur festivals mein cakes aur bolinhas chahiye.

Fig. 5.3Goan village life mein har jashn ko baker chahiye.NCERT A Baker from Goa · p. 65

Left mein chaar occasion boxes arrows se right ke bread boxes se jude hain. Step 1 pehli jodi dikhata hai: shaadi ke tohfon ko bol chahiye, ek meethi bread. Step 2 party ya daawat jodta hai, jise loaves of bread chahiye. Step 3 beti ki engagement jodta hai, jise sandwiches chahiye. Step 4 Christmas aur doosre festivals jodta hai, jinhe cakes aur bolinhas chahiye.

Baker ki dress. Pehle bakers kabai pehente the, ek one-piece frock jo ghutno tak aata tha. Writer ke bachpan tak unhone shirt aur aisi trousers pehenna shuru kar diya tha jo ghutne ke paas khatam hoti thi: shorts se lambi, full pants se chhoti. Yeh style ek mazaak mein zinda hai. Aaj bhi ghutne tak ke shorts pehne aadmi ko chheda ja sakta hai ki woh pader jaisa lagta hai.

Hisaab aur khushhaali. Pader aam taur par mahine mein ek baar apne paise leta tha, aur chalta hisaab deewar par pencil ke nishaanon se rakha jaata tha. Un dino baking se achhi kamaai hoti thi. Baker ki family kabhi bhookhi nahi rehti thi, aur unke gol-matol, khaate-peete shareer iska saboot the. Aaj bhi kisi mote insaan ko, jiska figure jackfruit jaisa ho, baker se compare kiya ja sakta hai.

5.2.3 Text ke baare mein sochna: writer ka tone

Tone writer ka attitude hai, jo tum sentence ke kehne ke dhang mein sunte ho. Is pen-portrait mein tone badalta rehta hai, aur isse piece mein jaan rehti hai. Tone ka naam dene ke liye poochho: writer jo keh raha hai uske baare mein woh kaisa feel karta hai?

Table 5.1'A Baker from Goa' mein tones
ToneYeh kaisa lagta haiYeh kahan sunaayi deta hai
nostalgicbeete waqt ke liye pyaar bhari chaahatloaves ki yaad aati khushboo; subah dande ki awaaz
hopefulbharosa ki kuch tikegabeta baap ka round aage chalata hai; ovens abhi bhi jal rahe hain

matter-of-factseedhi baat, koi feeling nahi jodikis mauke ko kaun si bread chahiye; monthly bill; bakers kabhi bhookhe nahi rahe

Dhyaan do ki ek hi paragraph mein do tones ho sakte hain. Writer apne bachpan ko lekar nostalgic ho sakta hai aur agle hi pal us par mazaak kar sakta hai. Achhe memoir mein yeh mel aam hai.

  1. Quick answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text Q1

Un statements par tick karo jo writer ke hisaab se aaj bhi sach hain.

    Saare sahi options chuno
    Answer dekho
    Answer
    • (A) Traditional bakers aaj bhi Goan gaon mein kaam karte hain.
    • (C) Kuch purani furnaces aaj bhi use hoti hain.
Writer kehta hai ki bakers aur unke ovens abhi bhi hain. Kabai beete zamaane ki baat hai, aur text kahin nahi kehta ki baking mein ab ghaata hota hai; woh sirf yeh kehta hai ki purane dino mein yeh faayde ka tha.
  2. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text Q2

Goan life mein bread kitni important hai? Apne answer ko text se teen evidence dekar support karo.

    Solution dikhao

Yes. Bread is woven into daily life and every celebration.

    • Wedding gifts must include the sweet bread bol; feasts need loaves.
    • Engagements need sandwiches; Christmas needs cakes and bolinhas.
    • The baker called twice a day, and the writer says a village cannot do without its oven.
  3. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text Q3

Do aise moments chuno jahan writer humorous hai aur samjhao ki har ek mein kya cheez mazedaar hai.

    Solution dikhao
    • The brushing excuse: he defends not brushing by pointing out that tigers never brush and hot tea cleans everything. The logic is absurd, and he knows it.
    • The jackfruit comparison: calling a plump person jackfruit-like is a playful, vivid exaggeration of the baker's well-fed shape.
  4. Short answerEasyNCERT Oral Comprehension Check (p. 65) Q3

Aaj Goa mein ghutne tak ke shorts pehne aadmi ko kyun chheda ja sakta hai?

    Solution dikhao

Bakers in the writer's childhood wore trousers that ended near the knee. So anyone in knee-length shorts is jokingly told he looks like a pader.

5.2.4 Writing: notes se picture tak

Is piece par textbook ke writing tasks do skills sikhaate hain: notes ko paragraph mein badalna, aur personal, vivid description ko flat, factual description se alag pehchaanna.

Ek hi subject par likhne ke do tareeke. Textbook is piece ka ek passage Goan bakers par ek chhoti factual report ke saath rakhta hai aur poochhta hai ki dono mein farq kya hai. Facts shayad milte-julte hon, lekin writing alag-alag kaam karti hai.

Compare

Personal vs factual writing

Personal (pen-portrait jaisi)

  • First person ka use: I, we, our elders
  • Yaadein, feelings aur opinions
  • Awaazein, khushbuein aur chhoti details
  • Humour aur badalta tone
  • Tumhe subject ko dekhne aur feel karne deti hai

Factual (report jaisi)

  • Third person, impersonal
  • Facts, dates aur causes
  • Sirf jaankaari dene wali details
  • Ek neutral tone
  • Tumhe subject ke baare mein jaanne deti hai
Table 5.3Ek hi subject, do styles
StylePassage (hamara apna)
PersonalEvery summer evening, the bell of Ramesh-bhai's cart reached us before he did. We abandoned our cricket mid-over and raced to the gate, coins hot in our fists. The kulfi was so cold it made my teeth ache, and I licked the stick long after it was bare.
FactualKulfi is a dense frozen dessert made by slowly boiling milk until it thickens, then freezing it in moulds. In many Indian towns it is still sold from handcarts by vendors who ring a bell. Popular flavours include malai, mango and pista.

5.2.5 Group discussion: bakeries aur khatam hote hunar

5.3 Coorg

Doosra glimpse ek travel essay hai, jo isliye likha gaya ki tumhara wahan jaane ka mann kare. Yeh aam taur par Lokesh Abrol ka maana jaata hai. Dekho ki yeh pakke facts (Coorg kahan hai, kab jaana hai, kaise pahunchna hai) ko jaandaar, lagbhag poetic description ke saath kaise milaata hai.

5.3.1 Zameen, mausam aur log

Yeh kahan hai. Coorg, jiska official naam Kodagu hai, Karnataka ka ek pahaadi district hai jo Mysuru aur coastal shahar Mangaluru ke beech hai. Writer taareefon ki jhadi se shuru karta hai, aur ise dharti par swarg ka ek tukda batata hai, jahan ek garvile yoddha log, sundar auratein aur jungli jaanwar rehte hain.

Jungle, masaale aur coffee. Coorg evergreen rainforest, spice gardens aur coffee estates ki dharti hai. Monsoon itna bhaari hota hai ki tab kam tourists aate hain; suhaana mausam September se March tak rehta hai, jab hawa mein coffee ki khushboo hoti hai aur purane colonial bungalows pedon ke neeche aadhe chhupe rehte hain.

Kodavus kaun hain. Coorg ke log, Kodavus, behad azaad khayaal bataaye gaye hain. Unki shuruaat ke baare mein pakka koi nahi jaanta, aur essay do theories deta hai. Ek legend kehti hai ki Alexander ke kuch soldiers coast ke saath neeche aaye aur ghar wapas na ja paane par yahin bas gaye aur local auraton se shaadi kar li. Doosri theory Arab jadon ki taraf ishaara karti hai. Kodavus ka traditional lamba kaala coat, jiske saath embroidered belt hoti hai, yaani kuppia, Arabs aur Kurds ke kuffia jaisa dikhta hai. Jo bhi ho, unke martial customs, shaadiyan aur dharmik rites mainstream Hindu practice se alag hain.

Mehmaan-nawaazi aur bahaduri. Coorgi families mehmaanon ka swaagat karti hain aur apne baapon aur beton ki bahaduri ke kisse sunaana pasand karti hain. Essay batata hai ki Coorg Regiment Indian Army ki sabse zyaada decorated regiments mein se hai, aur General K. M. Cariappa, jo Indian Army ko lead karne wale pehle Indian the, Kodava the. Yeh bhi batata hai ki Kodavus ko ek anokha legal privilege mila hai: woh bina licence ke guns rakh sakte hain, yeh haq India mein kisi aur community ke paas nahi hai.

5.3.2 River, adventure aur wildlife

River. Kaveri apna paani Coorg ki pahaadiyon aur jungalon se leti hai. Iska saaf paani mahseer se bhara hai, jo ek badi meethe paani ki machhli hai. Kingfishers khaane ke liye gota lagaate hain, aur squirrels aur langurs aadhe khaaye phal sirf chhapaak ka mazaa lene ke liye neeche gira dete hain. Mahouts uthle paani mein apne haathiyon ko ragad kar nehlaate hain.

Adventure. Writer mazaak karta hai ki yahan sabse aalsi visitor bhi thrill dhoondhne wala ban jaata hai. River par rafting, canoeing, rock climbing, rappelling aur mountain biking, sab milte hain, aur kai walking trails trekkers ko kheench laate hain.

Wildlife aur nazaare. Birds, bees aur butterflies chalne walon ka saath dete hain, jabki langurs, macaques, slender loris aur Malabar squirrels pedon ki chotiyon se dekhte hain. Jungli haathi alag baat hain: writer unke raaste se door rehna pasand karta hai. Brahmagiri hills par chadhne se dhundh bhare Coorg ka door tak faila nazaara dikhta hai. Ek rope bridge Kaveri ke ek island Nisargadhama tak le jaata hai, aur paas mein Bylakuppe, jo India ki sabse badi Tibetan settlements mein se ek hai, wahan visitors chamakdaar robes mein Buddhist monks se mil sakte hain. Essay yeh kehkar khatam hota hai ki aise surprises India ke dil ko saamne laate hain.

4/4Brahmagiri ka nazaara, Nisargadhama island aur Bylakuppe ke monks.

Fig. 5.4Chaar layers mein Coorg: zameen, river, adventure aur nazaare.NCERT Coorg · p. 69

Hari pahaadiyon ka ek landscape. Step 1 pahaadiyan, rainforest pedon ki ek line aur unki chhaon mein ugti laal berries wali coffee ki jhaadiyan dikhata hai. Step 2 neeche Kaveri river jodta hai, ek badi machhli ke saath jiska label mahseer hai. Step 3 river par paddlers wala ek raft aur pahaadi par upar jaata ek dashed trekking trail jodta hai. Step 4 sabse oonchi choti par ek viewpoint jodta hai jiska label Brahmagiri view hai, aur door ki pahaadi par ek chhoti monastery jiska label monks hai.

Fact file. End mein ek box kaam ki details deta hai: gateway town Madikeri hai, jo district ka headquarters hai, aur box mein sabse paas ke airports, railheads aur Bengaluru se road routes ki list hai. Aise boxes travel writing mein aam hain. Essay persuade karta hai; fact file jaankaari deti hai.

5.4 Tea from Assam

Teesra glimpse ek chhoti story hai jismein safar ka feel hai, aur yeh aam taur par Assamese writer Arup Kumar Datta ki maani jaati hai. Do school friends train se Upper Assam ke ek tea estate jaate hain, aur unki baatcheet se hum tea ke baare mein thoda itihaas, aur ek-do legends, seekhte hain.

5.4.1 Safar aur legends

Kaun aur kahan. Pranjol, jo Assam ka hai, Delhi mein apne classmate Rajvir ke saath padhta hai. Pranjol ke papa Upper Assam mein ek tea estate chalaate hain, aur Rajvir ko garmi ki chhuttiyan wahan bitaane ke liye bulaaya gaya hai.

Train mein chai. Ek station par ek vendor garam chai ke liye awaaz lagata hai, aur ladke do cup khareedte hain. Compartment mein lagbhag sab log chai pee rahe hain. Rajvir Pranjol ko ek chaunkaane wala number batata hai ki poori duniya roz kitne cup chai peeti hai.

Hariyali ka samundar. Train aage badhti hai to Pranjol apne detective novel par laut jaata hai. Rajvir ko bhi detective stories pasand hain, lekin aaj nazaara jeet jaata hai. Dhaan ke kheton ke baad tea gardens aate hain. Use neechi, saleeke se kati tea ki jhaadiyan jungal wali pahaadiyon tak faili dikhti hain, unke beech oonche chhaayadaar ped khade hain, pattiyan todne wale pluckers train se bahut chhote dikhte hain, aur door ek dhuaan chhodti factory hai. Writer jhaadiyon ko samundar kehta hai, ek metaphor jo unka rang aur unka kabhi khatam na hone wala failaav, dono pakad leta hai (Fig. 5.5).

5/5Pranjol ke parents unhe gaadi se Dhekiabari Tea Estate le jaate hain.

Fig. 5.5Train se Rajvir ka nazaara, aur road se aakhri safar.NCERT Tea from Assam · p. 72

Neeche ek railway line chalti hai, aur uske upar left se right chaar scenes hain: dhaan ke khet, neechi jhaadiyon aur oonche chhaayadaar pedon wala tea garden, dhuaan chhodti chimneys wali factory, aur Mariani junction ka station. Step 1: train dhaan ke kheton ke paas hai. Step 2: woh tea garden tak jaati hai. Step 3: woh factory ke paas se guzarti hai. Step 4: woh Mariani junction par rukti hai. Step 5: station se ek dashed road upar ek sign tak jaati hai jis par Dhekiabari likha hai.

Do reactions. Apna pehla tea garden dekh kar Rajvir khushi se chillaa uthta hai. Pranjol, jo plantation par bada hua hai, bilkul impressed nahi hai. Woh apne dost ko batata hai ki Assam mein duniya mein kahin bhi zyaada tea gardens paas-paas hain, isliye woh jaldi hi bahut saare dekh lega.

Tea ke legends. Rajvir ne tea ke baare mein padh rakha hai aur do legends sunaata hai. Chinese legend mein ek emperor, jo hamesha apna peene ka paani ubaal kar peeta tha, ne dekha ki jalti tehniyon ki kuch pattiyan bartan mein gir gayi thi aur paani ko badhiya swaad de diya tha. Pranjol use lambi-chaudi kahaniyan sunaane ke liye chhedta hai, to Rajvir ek Indian legend sunaata hai. Buddhist monk Bodhidharma ko meditation karte hue neend aane par gussa aaya, to unhone apni palkein kaat di, aur unse tea ke das paudhe uge. Unki pattiyan garam paani mein ubaalne se neend bhaag jaati thi.

Thoda sa itihaas. Rajvir batata hai ki Chinese hazaaron saal pehle tea pee rahe the, aur tea, chai aur chini jaise words Chinese se aaye hain. Woh kehta hai ki jab sixteenth century mein tea Europe pahunchi, to log use drink se zyaada dawa ki tarah lete the.

5.4.2 Dhekiabari pahunchna

Kuch English words ek verb aur ek chhote adverb ya particle se bante hain, jaise up, down, in, out, over, through ya by. Particle pehle aa sakta hai (upkeep) ya baad mein (breakthrough), aur naye word ka matlab hamesha uske hisson ka jod nahi hota (Fig. 5.6). Inmein se zyaadatar words nouns hain, lekin kuch verbs (undergo, overtake) ya adjectives (downcast) bhi hain.

5.4.4 -ing aur -ed adjectives

Kai adjectives -ing aur -ed wale pairs mein aate hain: interesting / interested, exciting / excited. -ing form us cheez ya insaan ko describe karta hai jo feeling paida karta hai: The match was thrilling. -ed form (kabhi-kabhi -en) us insaan ko describe karta hai jise feeling hoti hai: The fans were thrilled. Grammar ke experts inhe participial adjectives kehte hain.

Ek aam galti hai I am boring kehna jab matlab ho I am bored. Pehla sentence kehta hai ki tum doosron ko ubaasi dila dete ho! Isi tarah, a frightened dog khud dara hua hai, lekin a frightening dog tumhe daraata hai (Fig. 5.7).

Coorg ke baare mein lagbhag 100 words ka ek paragraph likho, jismein kam se kam chaar -ing ya -ed adjectives sahi tarah use hon.

    Solution dikhao

Coorg is a refreshing escape from the city. After a long, tiring drive we were amazed by the misty hills and the smell of coffee drifting from the estates. Rafting on the Kaveri was thrilling, though my mother looked a little worried as our raft spun through the rapids. Even my brother, who is usually bored on holidays, was fascinated by the macaques watching us from the trees. The view from the Brahmagiri hills was breathtaking. By the time we left, we were exhausted but delighted, and already planning our next visit.

-ing (causes): refreshing, tiring, thrilling, breathtaking. -ed (feelings): amazed, worried, bored, fascinated, exhausted, delighted.

5.5 The Trees

Bina pedon wala jungle kya hota hai? Aur agar ped jungle mein nahi hain, to woh gaye kahan? Unit ki poem padhte waqt yeh paheli yaad rakhna, jo American poet Adrienne Rich ki likhi hai. Yeh ek namumkin cheez ko aise describe karti hai jaise woh sach mein ho rahi ho, jisse ismein ek sapne jaisa, thoda ajeeb sa feel aata hai.

Poem free verse mein hai: alag-alag lambaai ke chaar stanzas, bina rhyme scheme aur bina kisi fixed beat ke. Sentences aksar ek line se agli line tak chalte rehte hain, jisse pedon ki chaal pehle dheemi aur phir achaanak lagti hai.

5.5.1 Stanza by stanza

  • Stanza 1 (khaali jungle). Speaker announce karti hai ki ghar ke andar rakhe ped jungle ki taraf ja rahe hain. Woh jungle kai din aur raat se khaali pada hai, aur poet ise un cheezon se dikhati hai jo gaayab rahi hain: birds ke paas baithne ki jagah nahi rahi, insects ke paas chhupne ki jagah nahi, aur sun ke paas aaraam karne ko chhaon nahi. Woh kehti hai ki subah tak yeh phir se bhar jaayega.
  • Stanza 2 (sangharsh). Poori raat ped khud ko azaad karne mein lage rehte hain. Unki jadein veranda ke farsh ki daraaron se dheeli hokar nikalti hain, pattiyan kaanch ki taraf zor lagaati hain, chhoti tehniyan mehnat se akad jaati hain, aur chhat ke neeche lambe samay se dabi shaakhaayein ghisat-ghisat kar aage badhti hain. Poet unki tulna un mareezon se karti hai jinhe abhi-abhi hospital se chhutti mili hai, jo abhi bhi chakraaye hue exit ki taraf ja rahe hain.
  • Stanza 3 (khaamosh gawaah). Speaker veranda ke darwaaze khule rakh kar andar baithi hai, lambe letters likhne mein vyast, jinmein woh apne ghar se jungle ke jaane ka mushkil se zikr karti hai. Raat ki hawa thandi aur taazi hai, saaf aasmaan mein poora chaand chamak raha hai, aur pattiyon aur lichen ki mehak kamron mein aise aati hai jaise koi awaaz bula rahi ho.
  • Stanza 4 (bahar nikalna). Uske mann mein phusphusaahatein bhar jaati hain, haalaanki kal tak woh chup ho jaayengi. Phir achaanak sunne ka ek hukm aata hai, aur kaanch tootne ki awaaz. Ped ladkhadaate hue raat mein bahar nikalte hain, hawa daud kar unka swaagat karti hai, aur chaand ab "broken like a mirror" dikhta hai, uske tukde sabse oonche oak ki sabse oonchi shaakhaon mein chamak rahe hain.

4/4Kaanch toot jaata hai, ped bahar nikal jaate hain, aur chaand tukdon mein dikhta hai.

Left mein ek ghar hai jiske kaanch ki deewaron wale veranda mein teen ped hain; right mein khuli zameen hai jiska label empty forest hai, aur upar poora chaand hai. Step 1 yeh shaant scene dikhata hai. Step 2: ped kaanch ki taraf jhukte hain aur ek label kehta hai jadein ukhdi. Step 3: poore chaand ke chaaron taraf roshni hai aur lehraati mehak ki lines bahar aati hain, label patton ki mehak. Step 4: kaanch mein daraarein aati hain, ped bahar jungle mein chale jaate hain, aur chaand aasmaan se gaayab hai; uske chhote chamakte tukde ab sabse oonche ped ki choti par jhilmila rahe hain, label moon ke tukde.

5.5.2 Poem ka matlab kya ho sakta hai?

Shabdon ke hisaab se padho to poem namumkin hai: ped chal nahi sakte. Isliye hum ise symbols ki poem ki tarah padhte hain. Textbook do readings deta hai, aur dono kaam karti hain.

Compare

'The Trees' ki do readings

Nature versus insaan

  • Sajaavat ke liye andar rakhe ped qaidiyon jaise hain
  • Udhar asli jungle kaate jaate hain aur khaali chhod diye jaate hain
  • Ped kaanch tod kar wahan lautte hain jahan unki jagah hai
  • Message: nature ko hamesha ke liye qaid nahi kiya ja sakta

Insaan ke roop mein ped

  • Rich aksar pedon ko insaanon ke symbol ki tarah use karti hain
  • Ghar: aaraamdaayak lekin bandishon wali life
  • Dabi hui shaakhaayein: samaaj ke rules se roki gayi auratein
  • Bahar nikalna: azaadi lena, chahe uski keemat chukaani pade

Speaker chup kyun hai? Woh pedon ko jaate dekhti hai lekin apne letters mein mushkil se iska zikr karti hai. Shayad yeh ghatna samjhaane ke liye bahut ajeeb hai, ya shabdon mein kehne ke liye bahut anokhi aur uljhan bhari. Shayad woh chupchaap pedon ke saath hai aur unhe rokna nahi chahti. Doosri reading mein shayad woh khud aisi insaan hai jo andar rehkar likhti rehti hai jabki doosre azaad ho jaate hain, jisse uski chuppi laaparwaahi nahi, soch-samajh wali lagti hai.

Doosri poems se rishta. 'A Tiger in the Zoo' (Unit 2) mein ek pinjre mein band tiger jungle ke sapne dekhta hai; Rich ke ped us sapne ko sach karke bhaag nikalte hain. Gieve Patel ki 'On Killing a Tree' (Beehive, Class 9) mein log ek ped ko khatam karne nikalte hain, jo kaate jaane par bhi bach jaata hai aur tabhi marta hai jab uski jadein ukhaad kar sookhne ke liye chhod di jaati hain. Patel insaan ki kroorta aur ped ki mazbooti dikhaate hain; Rich nature ki khaamosh taaqat ko azaadi mein badalte dikhaati hain.

'Nature versus insaan' reading mein ghar kis cheez ka symbol hai …
Answer dekho

Answer (A) aisi jagah jahan nature ko qaid rakha jaata hai

Ghar woh jagah hai jahan log sajaavat ke liye nature ko rakhte hain, isliye use chhodna azaadi hai. Hospital sirf ek tulna ka hissa hai.

5.5.3 Mood, tone aur poetic devices

Mood aur tone. Mood shaant aur rahasyamay (khaali jungle, andhere mein kaam karti jadein) se shaant aur taaza (chaandni raat) ki taraf jaata hai, aur aakhir mein achaanak, romaanchak azaadi (tootta kaanch) tak. Speaker ka tone shaant aur matter-of-fact rehta hai, jisse ajeeb ghatnaayein aur bhi ajeeb lagti hain.

Table 5.8'The Trees' mein devices

Free verse, run-on linesna rhyme na fixed beat; sentences line ke end ke paar chalte haindheemi, mehnat bhari chaal, phir ek jhatka

Sun ke pair. Socho ki dhoop pattiyon ke beech se jungle ki zameen par phisal rahi hai. Poet sun ko ek aise jeev ki tarah sochti hai jiske pair uski kirnein hain, jinhe woh thandi chhaon mein aaraam deta hai. Phrase "sun bury its feet in shadow" mein, bina pedon ka jungle chhaon nahi deta, isliye sun ke paas bhi aaraam karne ki jagah nahi.

5.5.4 Homophones aur homographs

Textbook ka box aise words se khelta hai jo ek jaise dikhte hain lekin alag matlab rakhte hain. Yahan do terms madad karte hain. Homophones ek jaise sunaayi dete hain lekin matlab mein, aur aam taur par spelling mein, alag hote hain: sea aur see, knight aur night. Homographs ki spelling same hoti hai lekin matlab alag hota hai, aur kabhi-kabhi pronunciation bhi. Box ke examples isi doosri kism ke hain.

Practice 5.5: Poem ke baare mein sochna: answers ke saath

  1. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q1

Stanza 1 ke baare mein answer do.

    1. Stanza 1 ke hisaab se teen cheezein batao jo khaali jungle nahi de sakta.

      Solution dikhao

Birds cannot perch, insects cannot hide, and the sun cannot rest its rays in shade.

    2. Sun ke chhaon mein apne pair aaraam karne ki image kaun si picture banaati hai? Sun ke 'feet' kya hain?

      Solution dikhao

It pictures the sun as a person cooling its feet in shade. The 'feet' are its rays touching the forest floor; with no trees there is no shade, so even the sun cannot rest.

  2. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q2

Stanza 2 ke baare mein answer do.

    1. Ped kahan hain, aur unki jadein, pattiyan aur tehniyan kya karti hain?

      Solution dikhao

They are inside a house, on a glass veranda. The roots work loose from the floor, the leaves press towards the glass, and the twigs go stiff with effort.

    2. Shaakhaon ki tulna kisse ki gayi hai, aur yeh tulna sahi kyun baithti hai?

      Solution dikhao

To newly discharged hospital patients: like them, the branches are weak and half-dazed after being shut in for long, yet they move eagerly towards freedom.

  3. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q3

Poem ke aakhri hisse ke baare mein answer do.

    1. Chaand kaise badalta hai, aur yeh badlaav kis wajah se hota hai?

      Solution dikhao

At first it is whole, shining in an open sky. At the end it looks broken like a mirror, its pieces glinting high in the branches of the tallest oak, because the trees now stand between the speaker and the moon.

    2. Pedon ke chale jaane ke baad ghar ka kya hota hai?

      Solution dikhao

Its glass breaks as the trees push through, and it is left empty of the green life it held.

    3. Speaker apne letters mein pedon ke jaane ka mushkil se zikr kyun karti hogi?

      Solution dikhao

The event is so strange that it is hard to explain or believe, and unexpected events can make us awkwardly silent. She may also sympathise with the trees and not want to stop them.

  4. Long answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q4

Poem ke do possible matlab samjhao, aur ek apna matlab bhi sujhao.

    Solution dikhao

Nature versus people. Plants kept indoors for decoration, even as real forests are felled, are like prisoners. Their escape shows that nature cannot be caged for ever.

Trees as people. Rich often uses trees for human beings. The cramped boughs suggest women confined by society's rules; breaking the glass is claiming freedom, even at a cost.

Another reading. The trees could be the poet's own ideas or feelings, long held in, which finally burst out. The whispers in her head that will be silent tomorrow support this.

  5. Long answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q5

'The Trees' ko Gieve Patel ki 'On Killing a Tree' se compare karo.

    Solution dikhao
    • Similar: both personify trees, show their strength, and make us think about how people treat nature.
    • Different action: in Patel's poem people destroy a tree; in Rich's, trees free themselves.
    • Different tone: Patel is grim and ironic, describing killing step by step; Rich is calm, mysterious and hopeful.
    • Message: Patel warns of human cruelty; Rich celebrates nature's (or people's) urge to be free.

Writer kaise dikhata hai ki Goan village life mein baker itna important tha?

    Solution dikhao

The writer shows the pader at the centre of village life. He came twice every day, and his staff was the village's morning alarm; children rushed to him for bread-bangles. No celebration was complete without him: weddings needed bol, engagements sandwiches, and Christmas cakes and bolinhas. The writer even says a village cannot do without the baker's oven. The pader was trusted with a monthly account kept on the wall, and his trade made his family comfortable and well fed. He has even entered everyday speech, since people in knee-length shorts are said to dress like him. Through these details, told with affection and humour, the baker emerges as a friend, a guide and a pillar of the community.

    • Key points: daily visits and children's excitement
    • bread at every celebration
    • trust: monthly accounts; prosperity
    • lives on in speech
    • affectionate conclusion
  2. Long answerMedium

'Coorg is a place where nature, history and adventure meet.' Essay ke reference se discuss karo.

    Solution dikhao

Coorg's nature is rich: evergreen rainforests, spice gardens and coffee estates cover misty hills, the Kaveri teems with mahseer, and kingfishers, langurs, macaques and the slender loris share the forest. Its history is equally colourful. The Kodavus may descend from Alexander's soldiers or from Arabs, they keep martial traditions, they are proud of a highly decorated regiment and of General Cariappa, and they enjoy a unique right to carry arms. Adventure completes the picture: rafting, rock climbing, canoeing, rappelling, biking and trekking turn even lazy visitors into thrill-seekers. Add the Brahmagiri view and the monks of Bylakuppe, and Coorg truly offers something for every traveller.

    • Key points: nature: forests, coffee, river, wildlife
    • history and people: origins, valour, Cariappa
    • adventure sports
    • a clear concluding judgement
  3. Long answerHard

Rajvir ne Assam jaane se pehle tea ke baare mein padha. Safar ki taiyaari safar ko aur behtar kaise banaati hai? 'Tea from Assam' ke reference se answer do.

    Solution dikhao

Rajvir arrives in Assam already knowing the legends of tea, its long history and the meaning of the second flush. Because of this, he does not just look at green bushes; he understands what he is seeing, and his excitement is informed rather than empty. His knowledge also wins respect: Mr Barua is pleasantly surprised, and a conversation opens up in which Rajvir can learn even more. Pranjol, who grew up among tea gardens, hardly notices them, showing that knowledge and curiosity, not just presence, make a place come alive. The lesson is clear: a little reading before a journey turns sightseeing into understanding and helps the traveller ask better questions.

    • Key points: what Rajvir knew
    • informed excitement and respect from Mr Barua
    • contrast with Pranjol
    • general lesson about travel
  4. Long answerHard

'The Trees' azaadi ki chaahat ke baare mein ek poem hai. Kya tum sahmat ho? Kaaran do.

    Solution dikhao

Yes. The poem opens with trees confined inside a house while the forest stands empty. Through the night their roots, leaves, twigs and boughs strain to escape, like dazed patients longing to leave hospital. At last the glass breaks and the trees stumble out into the night, where the winds rush to welcome them. Read as nature against people, it shows that plants kept for decoration belong in the wild. Read as a poem about people, especially women, the cramped boughs suggest lives held back by society, and the shattered glass the cost of breaking free. The speaker's quiet watching and her calm tone make the escape seem natural and inevitable. Either way, freedom is the poem's heart.

    • Key points: confinement and struggle described
    • the break-out
    • both readings linked to freedom
    • speaker's role or tone
    • clear stance
