7.1 Padhne se pehle

Kisi aisi cheez ke baare mein socho jo tumne pehli baar akele ki ho: market se sabzi khareedna, do gali door dost ke ghar paidal jaana, bina kisi bade ke auto-rickshaw lena. Tumhara ek hissa garv mehsoos kar raha tha aur ek hissa ghabra raha tha. Shayad tumne woh cheezein bhi notice ki jo aas-paas ke bade log kab ka dekhna band kar chuke the.

Yeh story ek aath saal ki ladki ki hai jo paas wale town tak apni pehli trip karti hai, akele aur ghar mein kisi ko bataye bina. Jaane wali ride poori tarah maze ki hai. Wapas aane wali ride kuch aisa laati hai jiska usne kabhi plan nahi kiya tha: maut se uska pehla qareebi saamna. Ant tak woh seekh leti hai ki kisi fact ko jaanna aur uska matlab mehsoos karna ek jaisi baat nahi hai.

3/3Window seat se dekho to bus ruki hui lagti hai aur ped peeche ki taraf bhaagte lagte hain.

Fig. 7.1Ped kabhi nahi hilte. Sirf dekhne ki jagah badalti hai: bus ke andar se woh tumhare paas se bhaagte hue lagte hain.NCERT Activity 2 · p. 94

Figure ke aar-paar ek sadak hai, uske kinare teen ped aur ek chhoti bus. Step 1, Ruka hua: bus left mein khadi hai aur ped apni jagah par hain.

Kyun?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) Tum unke paas se aage badh rahe ho, isliye woh ulti taraf chalte lagte hain.

Bus tumhe aage le jaati hai, isliye ruki hui cheezein peeche khisakti lagti hain. Hawa daaliyan jhuka sakti hai, lekin poore ped ko sadak par aage-peeche nahi kar sakti.

7.2 Story padhna

Story chaar parts mein hai, aur lagbhag sab kuch ek hi dopahar mein hota hai. Part I Valli aur uski ichchha se shuru karta hai. Parts II aur III town tak ki ride ke saath chalte hain, aur peeche mudkar dikhate hain ki usne taiyaari kaise ki. Part IV use ghar wapas laata hai, aise badlav ke saath jo aas-paas koi notice nahi karta. Neeche ki summaries padhte hue Fig. 7.2 mein route follow karo, phir har part apni textbook mein padho.

6/7Wahi gaay sadak kinare mari padi hai. Uski khushi gaayab ho jaati hai.

Fig. 7.2Ek dopahar, ek sadak, do bilkul alag journeys.

Ek map jismein left mein gaon aur right mein town hai, jo upar wali lane (town jaane ki) aur neeche wali lane (wapas aane ki) se jude hain. Sadak ke saath ek canal behti hai aur ek railway line use kaat-ti hai. Step 1: ek baje Valli wali bus gaon se nikalti hai. Step 2: canal road par woh bahar dekhne ke liye seat par khadi hoti hai. Step 3: ek jawaan gaay bus ke aage daudti hai. Step 4: level crossing par ek train garajti hui nikalti hai. Step 5: town mein woh bus mein hi rehti hai aur phir se paise deti hai. Step 6: neeche wali lane par, wapas aate hue, woh gaay ko mara pada dekhti hai. Step 7: bus 3:40 par gaon pahunchti hai.

7.2.1 Part I: Ek ichchha aakaar leti hai

Part I kisi cheez ko shiddat se chaahne aur use paane ka tareeka nikaalne ke baare mein hai. Valli, yaani Valliammai, aath saal ki hai. Uske ghar ka darwaaza uski nigraani ki jagah hai, aur sadak uska entertainment. Jo kuch bhi guzarta hai, usmein sabse zyada use paas wale town ki bus romanchit karti hai. Logon ko chadhte-utarte dekhkar use bhi ek ride ki ichchha hone lagti hai, aur yeh ichchha badhti jaati hai jab tak uska poora mann nahi bhar leti. Jab ek dost town se dher saari kahaniyan lekar lautti hai, to Valli sunne se mana kar deti hai aur us par chillati hai “Proud! proud!”, ek udhaar liya hua English word jise koi bhi bachcha theek se nahi samajhta.

Valli apne parents se nahi poochhti. Woh padosiyon aur regular passengers ki baatein sunti hai aur beech-beech mein ek soch-samajhkar sawaal pooch leti hai. Dheere-dheere woh facts jod leti hai: town six miles door hai, fare har taraf ka thirty paise hai, trip mein forty-five minutes lagte hain, aur agar woh bus mein hi baithi rahe to aur thirty paise dekar seedhe wapas aa sakti hai. Ek achchhe kapde pehne aadmi ke liye, jiski baat woh sun leti hai, yeh fare chhoti si rakam hai, lekin us ladki ke liye bahut badi rakam hai jiske paas shayad hi kabhi apna sikka hota hai. Woh apna timetable baar-baar banati hai, jaisa Fig. 7.3 dikhata hai.

4/4Asal mein bus use 3:40 par gaon wapas laayi, kyunki wapas mudne se pehle woh town mein rukti rahi.

Fig. 7.3Valli ka plan dhyaan se bana tha, lekin asli wapsi ka time lagbhag ek ghanta late nikla.

Step 1, Facts: teen cards par likha hai 6 miles, 30 paise each way aur 45 minutes. Step 2, Plan: ek time line aati hai jis par 1:00 (nikalna), 1:45 (town pahunchna) aur lagbhag 2:45 (ghar aana) ke marks hain. Step 3, Savings: sikkon ki ek line dikhati hai ki 30 plus 30 milkar 60 paise hote hain, jitne paise use bachane the. Step 4, Real: 3:40 par ek chautha mark, jis par back likha hai, dikhata hai ki bus asal mein kab uske gaon lauti, plan se lagbhag ek ghanta baad, kyunki wapsi ki trip se pehle woh town mein rukti rahi.

Valli apna khaali time kaise bitana pasand karti thi?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) Apne ghar ke darwaaze par khadi hokar sadak dekhna

Apne darwaaze se sadak dekhna uska favourite shauk tha. Uski gali mein uski umar ka koi aur bachcha nahi tha, isliye group games uske din ka hissa nahi the.

7.2.2 Part II: “Madam” bus mein chadhti hai

Basant ki ek suhaani dopahar, bus gaon se nikal hi rahi hoti hai ki ek chhoti si awaaz use rukne ka hukm deti hai. Conductor bahar jhaankta hai aur dekhta hai ki ek aath saal ki bachchi apne sikke dikhate hue town jaane ki zid par adi hai. Woh use andar chadhane ke liye haath badhata hai, lekin woh mana kar deti hai: woh khud chadhegi. Khush hokar woh ek khel shuru karta hai jo poori trip chalta hai. Woh use ek badi lady ki tarah treat karta hai, use “madam” bulata hai aur gine-chune passengers se uske liye jagah banane ko kehta hai.

Ek canvas ka parda uski khidki ka neeche wala aadha hissa dhak deta hai, isliye woh bahar dekhne ke liye seat par khadi ho jaati hai. Sadak ek canal ke saath-saath chalti hai, aur dono taraf door tak hare-bhare khet faile hain. Valli ko yeh sab kuch kamaal ka lagta hai.

Do bade passengers uska khayal rakhne ki koshish karte hain, aur woh dono ko door kar deti hai. Ek buzurg aadmi pyaar se use baithne ko kehte hain. Woh palatkar kehti hai ki woh bachchi nahi hai: usne kisi bhi passenger ki tarah apna fare khud diya hai. Conductor bhi chhedne mein shaamil ho jaata hai, aur woh tadakkar kehti hai ki woh madam bhi nahi hai, aur use abhi tak ticket nahi mila. Sab hanste hain, aur jaldi hi Valli bhi hansne lagti hai. Jab woh chetaavni deta hai ki tez mod par woh gir sakti hai, to woh elaan karti hai ki woh aath saal ki hai. Woh tabhi baithti hai jab naye passengers chadhte hain aur use apni seat chhin jaane ka darr hota hai.

Phir ek buzurg aurat uske paas baithti hai aur poochhti hai ki kya woh akeli hai. Valli ko woh ghinauni lagti hai, lambe khinche hue kaan, bhaari jhumke aur munh mein bhara paan, aur woh jitna ho sake utna chhota jawaab deti hai. Jab aurat poochhti rehti hai ki kya ek ladki ko akele travel karna chahiye aur woh theek kahan ja rahi hai, to Valli khidki ki taraf mud jaati hai aur kehti hai ki fikar mat karo: woh apna khayal khud rakh sakti hai.

Conductor ki Valli ko “madam” bulane ki aadat ke peeche kya hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) Woh itna bada aur independent banne ke liye use chhed raha hai.

Woh bus ko rukne ka hukm deti hai, madad mana karti hai aur apna fare khud deti hai, isliye woh mazaak mein use lady ki tarah treat karta hai. Yeh pyaar bhari chhed-chhaad hai, paise ki izzat nahi.

7.2.3 Part III: Sixty paise aur ajoobon se bhara town

Part III pehle peeche jaakar dikhata hai ki is trip ke liye kitni mehnat lagi. Mahinon tak Valli ne jo bhi khule sikke mile, unse mithai ya chhoti cheezein khareedne ke bajaay unhe sambhaal kar rakha, jab tak uske paas sixty paise nahi ho gaye, bilkul aane-jaane ka fare. Sabse mushkil imtihaan gaon ke mele mein aaya: uske paas merry-go-round ki ride ke paise the, phir bhi usne khud ko mana kar diya.

Ped bhi zinda lagte hain, bus ki taraf daudte aate hain aur phir uske peeche bhaag jaate hain, bilkul Fig. 7.1 jaisa.

Phir aata hai uski zindagi ka sabse mazedaar nazara. Ek jawaan gaay, poonchh hawa mein uthaaye, bus ke theek aage sadak ke beechon-beech sarpat daud rahi hai. Driver baar-baar horn bajata hai, lekin har horn use aur dara deta hai aur woh aur tez bhaagti hai, abhi bhi theek unke saamne. Valli itna hansti hai ki aansu aa jaate hain, aur conductor mazaak karta hai ki kuch hansi kal ke liye bhi bacha kar rakho.

Ek train dhadhadhaati hui level crossing se guzarti hai aur bus ko hila deti hai. Phir town uske chaaron taraf khul jaata hai: station, bheed bhari sadkein, badi-badi dukaanon ki khidkiyan aur itne log jitne usne kabhi ek jagah nahi dekhe. Valli itni hairaan hai ki ek word nahi bol paati.

Aakhri stop par Valli ke alawa sab utar jaate hain; woh wapsi ke liye aur thirty paise deti hai. Hairaan conductor poochhta hai ki kya kuch gadbad hai; woh kehti hai ki use bas bus ki ride chahiye thi. Woh suggest karta hai ki woh town ghoom le, lekin akele use bahut darr lagega. Woh kisi stall par drink ka suggest karta hai, aur woh kehti hai ki woh nahi le sakti. Jab woh uske liye cold drink laane ki offer karta hai, to woh kehti hai ki uske paas uske paise nahi hain, aur jab woh kehta hai ki yeh uski taraf se treat hogi, tab bhi woh mazbooti se mana kar deti hai.

Valli ko apni trip ke paise kaise mile?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) Usne lambe time tak khule sikke bachaye aur treats chhod diye.

Valli kehti hai, koi nahi dhoondhega. Wahi nazare use phir se excite karte hain, jab tak use sadak ke kinare woh jawaan gaay nahi dikhti jo pehle unke aage daud rahi thi. Woh mari padi hai, kisi tez gaadi ne use takkar maar di. Woh conductor se poochhti hai ki kya yeh wahi jaanwar hai, aur woh haan mein sir hilata hai.

Jo jaanwar usi dopahar pehle itna zinda aur mazedaar laga tha, ab bejaan aur bhayaanak dikhta hai, aur yeh tasveer uske mann se nahi jaati. Uska josh khatam ho jaata hai. Ab nazare mein use koi dilchaspi nahi rehti, aur woh bina hile baithi rehti hai jab tak bus 3:40 par uske gaon nahi pahunchti. Utarte waqt woh tameez se conductor se kehti hai ki ummeed hai woh unse phir milegi. Woh kehta hai kabhi bhi aana, aur apna fare lekar aana. Woh hansti hai aur ghar bhaag jaati hai.

Ghar par uski maa jaagi hui hai, South Street ki ek aunty se baatein kar rahi hai jo kabhi bolna band nahi karti. Aunty poochhti hai ki Valli kahan thi lekin jawaab ka intezaar nahi karti, isliye Valli bas muskura deti hai. Uski maa ek aam baat keh rahi hai: duniya mein jo kuch hota hai, woh sab koi nahi jaan sakta, aur kisi cheez ke baare mein jaanna use poori tarah samajhne jaisa nahi hai. “Oh, yes!” Valli dheere se kehti hai. Jab maa poochhti hai ki usne kya kaha, to woh baat sambhaal leti hai ki woh bas haan mein haan mila rahi thi. Aunty use ek chhoti ladki kehti hai jo badon ki baaton mein aise ghus jaati hai jaise unmein se ek ho. Valli mann hi mann muskuraati hai, ek aisi muskaan jise woh apne tak rakhna chahti hai. Bade log waise bhi use shayad hi padh paayenge.

7.3 Text ke baare mein sochna

Is story par board answers mein marks evidence par milte hain. Jab bhi tum koi quality batao, character ki koi baat ya kaam point karo, aur batao ki usse kya pata chalta hai. Neeche ke sections tumhare liye yeh evidence ikattha karte hain.

7.3.1 Valli aur uske aas-paas ke log

Valli ek chhoti ladki hai jiska iraada bada hai. Use har cheez ke baare mein curiosity hai, woh badon ki tarah plan karti hai aur use baby ki tarah treat kiya jaana bilkul pasand nahi. Phir bhi woh abhi bhi poori tarah ek bachchi hai: woh ek dare hue jaanwar par hansti hai, ek aurat ko uske jhumkon se judge karti hai aur akele town ghoomne se bahut darti hai. Table har trait ko us evidence ke saath jodti hai jise tum answer mein quote kar sakte ho.

Bade log bhi important hain, kyunki har ek dikhata hai ki bade bachchon se alag-alag tarah kaise pesh aate hain. Conductor Valli ko chhedta hai lekin uski hifaazat bhi karta hai, usse imaandaari se baat karta hai aur use ek asli passenger ki tarah treat karta hai. Dono buzurg passengers bhala chahte hain, lekin bada banna chahne wali ladki ko unki fikar dakhal-andaazi lagti hai. Uski maa aur aunty apni baaton mein itni mashgool hain ki unhe kabhi pata hi nahi chalta ki usne kya kiya.

7.3.2 Aath saal ki nazar se dekhna

Story third person mein batayi gayi hai, lekin narrator Valli ke vichaaron ke kareeb rehta hai, isliye point of view uska hai. Hum wahi notice karte hain jo ek aath saal ki bachchi notice karegi, aur cheezon ko waise hi judge karte hain jaise woh karti hai. Yeh raha evidence jo tum answer mein use kar sakte ho:

  • Chalte ped. Ped bus ki taraf daudte, rukte, phir bhaag jaate lagte hain. Yeh personification hai, aur isi tarah ek bachcha khidki ka nazara samjhata hai (Fig. 7.1).
  • Bhookhi bus. Gaadiyan aur paidal log aise lagte hain jaise bus unhe nigal jaayegi, phir bhi woh bach kar nikal jaati hai. Jahan ek bada aam traffic dekhta hai, wahan bachcha khatra aur jaadu dekhta hai.
  • Kya mazedaar hai. Ghabraayi hui gaay use khatarnaak nahi, bahut mazedaar lagti hai.
  • Paise. Thirty paise uske liye khazana hai, haalaanki ek ameer aadmi use lagbhag kuch nahi kehta.
  • Bade hone ka saboot. Valli ke liye apna fare khud dena aur aath saal ka hona baat khatam kar deta hai.
  • Shakal se judge karna. Use buzurg aurat uske jhumkon aur paan ki wajah se buri lagti hai, uski baaton ki wajah se nahi.
  • Hairaani. Town dukaanon aur bheed ke baare mein excited exclamations ki jhadi ki tarah saamne aata hai.

Kyunki hum uski aankhon se dekhte hain, isliye jaate waqt hum bhi uska josh mehsoos karte hain. Isi wajah se mari hui gaay humein bhi utni hi zor se lagti hai jitni use.

7.3.3 Themes, title aur ending

  • Curiosity aur badi duniya. Apni gali se aage dekhne ki ek bachchi ki chaahat poori story ko aage badhati hai.
  • Independence aur bada hona. Valli chahti hai ki use seriously liya jaaye, aur ek hi dopahar mein woh sach mein thodi badi ho jaati hai.
  • Planning aur self-discipline. Ek chhota sapna research, bachat aur patience se poora hota hai.
  • Self-respect. Woh apna kharcha khud uthaati hai aur aise ehsaan mana karti hai jinhe woh lauta nahi sakti.
  • Zindagi aur maut. Wahi gaay ek pal zindagi se bhari hai aur agle pal bejaan. Valli sach mein maut se milti hai.
  • Jaanna banaam samajhna. Hum kisi fact ko jaan sakte hain bina use samjhe. Valli ka experience use woh samajh deta hai jo bade sochte hain ki uske paas nahi hai.

Title. “Madam” conductor ka chhedne wala naam hai ek aisi ladki ke liye jo lady ki tarah pesh aati hai. Yeh pyaar bhara aur thoda ironic hai: woh sirf aath saal ki hai. Phir bhi ant tak yeh title ek tarah se sach ho jaata hai. Jo ladki ek khilandad bachchi ki tarah gayi thi, woh kuch serious seekhkar lautti hai, aur use ek bade ki tarah apne tak rakhti hai.

Ending. Hum kitna kam jaante aur samajhte hain, is baare mein maa ki aam baat Valli ke din par bilkul fit baithti hai, haalaanki maa ko koi andaaza nahi. Aunty badon ki baaton mein ghusne ke liye uska mazaak udaati hai, jabki asal mein Valli hi akeli hai jisne woh jiya hai jiske baare mein woh baat kar rahe hain. Yeh dramatic irony hai: reader woh jaanta hai jo bade nahi jaante. Valli ki niji muskaan story ko chupchaap khatam karti hai. Fig. 7.4 mein dopahar bhar uski feelings follow karo.

7/7Ek shaant, secret muskaan: woh kuch naya jaanti hai.

Fig. 7.4Valli ki dopahar poori khushi tak upar jaati hai aur phir tezi se girti hai. Ant mein woh zyada shaant aur samajhdaar hai, wahan nahi jahan se shuru hui thi.

Ek graph jiske vertical axis par mood low se high tak hai aur neeche saat pal hain, har step mein ek dikhta hai. Step 1, Wish: uski tadap ke liye kaafi upar ka point. Step 2, Board: thoda neeche, kyunki hansi ke baad woh sharmaati hai. Step 3, Canal: upar, nazare par hairaani se bhari. Step 4, Cow: sabse upar ka point, daudti gaay par hansi. Step 5, Town: phir se upar, dukaanon se hairaan. Step 6, Dead cow: line sabse neeche ke point tak gir jaati hai, jahan sadness likha hai. Step 7, Home: line beech tak uthti hai, ek shaant niji muskaan.

  1. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text Q1

Valli sabse zyada kya chahti thi? Writer Part I mein is ichchha ko badhte hue kaise dikhata hai?

    Solution dikhao

She wanted to ride the bus to town, even once. The writer shows the wish as tiny at first, then getting stronger day by day until it becomes an overpowering desire. It shows in her longing looks at the passengers and in her jealous refusal to hear friends' stories about the town.

  2. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text Q2

Batao Valli ne trip ki taiyaari kaise ki: usne kaun se facts ikattha kiye, kitne paise bachaye aur kaun sa time chuna.

    Solution dikhao
    • Information: by listening to neighbours and passengers and asking careful questions, she learnt the distance (six miles), the fare (thirty paise each way), the time (forty-five minutes) and that she could return on the same bus.
    • Money: she saved every loose coin, giving up sweets and even a merry-go-round ride, until she had sixty paise.
    • Timing: she chose the afternoon, when her mother napped, roughly from one till four.

  4. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text Q4

Conductor Valli ko “madam” nickname kyun deta hai? Kya yeh sirf mazaak hai?

    Solution dikhao

She stops the bus, refuses help, pays her own fare and talks like a grown-up, so the jolly conductor teases her by treating her as a lady. It is a joke, but an affectionate one: he also looks after her and treats her as a real passenger.

Wapsi ki trip mein Valli nazare se munh pher leti hai. Yeh badlav kyun aata hai?

    Solution dikhao

She sees the young cow that had run ahead of the bus lying dead, hit by a speeding vehicle. The sight shocks her and keeps coming back to her mind, so her excitement dies and she no longer wants to look outside.

  7. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text Q7

Jab maa poochhti hai ki usne kya kaha, to Valli kehti hai ki woh bas un cheezon ke baare mein haan mila rahi thi jo hamari jaankari ke bina hoti hain. Uska asli matlab kya hai?

    Solution dikhao

She agrees for a real reason. Her whole trip happened without her mother's knowledge, and the dead cow taught her that knowing about death is different from understanding it. Her reply sounds innocent, so it keeps her secret safe while being honest.

  8. Long answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Text Q8

Writer duniya ko waise describe karta hai jaise ek aath saal ki bachchi use dekhegi. Story se iska evidence do.

    Solution dikhao

The narrator stays close to Valli's thoughts. Trees seem to run at the bus and then run away; the bus seems ready to swallow vehicles and walkers; a panicking cow is hilarious; thirty paise is a fortune; being eight and paying a fare make her grown-up; the old woman is disgusting because of her earrings; the town is all exclamations about big shops and crowds. Even her shout of “Proud! proud!” is a child's half-understood slang. Seeing this way makes the dead cow a real shock.

Answer (C) Uske paas ek aisa experience hai jiske baare mein bade kuch nahi jaante, aur woh thodi samajhdaar ho gayi hai.

Muskaan ek secret nayi samajh dikhati hai. Woh gaay ko bhooli nahi hai: woh yaad bhi uski nayi samajh ka hissa hai.

7.4 Story mein language

Yeh story zyadatar baatcheet hai, isliye log kaise bolte hain usse pata chalta hai ki woh kaun hain. Is section mein tum bolne ke tareeke ko describe karne wale words seekhoge, phir speech ko reported speech mein badalne ki practice karoge, jo board grammar ka ek regular topic hai.

7.4.1 Log kaise bolte hain: adverbs aur reporting verbs

Writers shayad hi kabhi said par rukte hain. Woh ek adverb of manner jodte hain yeh dikhane ke liye ki words kaise nikle (she replied curtly), ya ek zyada tez reporting verb chunte hain (she snapped). Yeh choices feelings aur character ke clues hain, isiliye tumhari textbook ka Question 3 tumse inhe notice karne ko kehta hai.

Table 7.3Kuch kaise kaha gaya, yeh dikhane wale adverbs
AdverbMatlabExample
commandinglyjaise koi hukm de raha ho“Line up here,” the captain said commandingly.
haughtilyghamand se, doosron ko neecha dekhte hue“I never eat street food,” he said haughtily.
curtlyrukhe tareeke se chhota“No,” the clerk answered curtly, without looking up.
irritablychidhkar“I heard you the first time,” Didi said irritably.
firmlybina kisi behas ki gunjaaish ke“No phones at dinner,” Papa said firmly.
casuallybina khaas dilchaspi ke“Where were you?” Ravi asked casually, still reading.
timidlysharmaate hue, bina confidence ke“May I come in?” the new boy asked timidly.
teasinglykhel-khel mein, mazaak udaate hue“Has the champion woken up?” Amma asked teasingly.

Reporting verbs bhi tone batate hain: snapped (gusse mein), chimed in (kisi aur ki baat mein shaamil hua), mimicked (chhedne ke liye tone ki nakal ki), breathed (dheere se, feeling ke saath kaha), muttered, insisted aur pleaded. Parts II aur IV dobara padhte hue inmein se kai dhoondho.

Answer (1) timidly, (2) curtly, (3) firmly

Atak-atak kar bolna timid speaker dikhata hai; bina upar dekhe do words curt hain; ek tez hukm firmly diya jaata hai.

7.4.2 Board link: reported speech

Reported speech mein tum kisi ke words apne sentence mein aage pahunchate ho, bina quotation marks ke. Jab reporting verb past mein ho (said, asked, told), to aam taur par teen cheezein badalti hain: pronouns (jo ab bol raha hai uske hisaab se), tense (past mein ek step peeche) aur time aur place words. Fig. 7.5 teeno badlav ek-ek karke dikhata hai. Agar reporting verb present mein ho (says), to tense nahi badalta.

5/5that se jodo, quotation marks hatao, aur sentence reported ho gaya.

Sabse upar direct sentence hai: Nisha said, I am taking the bus today, quotation marks mein. Step 1 sirf yahi sentence dikhata hai. Step 2 ek chip jodta hai jo pronoun ka I se she mein badlav dikhata hai. Step 3 doosri chip jodta hai jo tense ka am se was mein badlav dikhata hai. Step 4 teesri chip jodta hai jo time ka today se that day mein badlav dikhata hai. Step 5 neeche poora reported sentence dikhata hai: Nisha said that she was taking the bus that day.

Questions statements ban jaate hain. Yes/no questions mein if ya whether lagta hai; wh- questions apna question word rakhte hain. Dono mein subject verb se pehle aata hai aur question mark hat jaata hai. Commands aur requests mein told, asked ya ordered ke saath to + verb aata hai, aur negative ke liye not to.

7.5 Speaking aur writing

7.5.1 Speaking: yaad rehne wali awaazein

Is story ka bada hissa baatcheet hai: conductor ke mazaak, buzurg aadmi ki chetaavni, buzurg aurat ke ek ke baad ek sawaal, maa aur aunty ki gappein. Tumhari textbook tumse kehti hai ki apni zindagi se aise logon ko yaad karo aur unki awaazon ko, apne jawaabon ke saath, zinda karo.

7.5.2 Writing: teen paragraphs mein ek page

Tumhari textbook teen mein se kisi ek subject par, teen paragraphs mein, lagbhag ek page maangti hai. Hamare words mein: ek plan jo tumne kisi bade ko shaamil kiye bina akele poora kiya; ek safar jo tum kabhi nahi bhoologe; ya road safety ko lekar tumhari chintaayein, sadkon ko zyada safe aur achchha banane ke ideas ke saath.

4/4Link words reader ko ek paragraph se agle tak le jaate hain.

7.6 The Tale of Custard the Dragon

Zyada bahadur kaun hai: jo badi-badi baatein karta hai, ya jo khatra aane par kuch karta hai? Ogden Nash iska jawaab ek pet dragon se dete hain jiska sab darpok hone ke liye mazaak udaate hain. Pehle apni textbook mein poem zor se padho. Yeh sunne ke liye bani hai, aur iski beat tumhe saath le chalegi.

Ek ballad, aur ballads par ek mazaak. Ballad chhote stanzas mein, tez beat aur simple words ke saath ek story sunata hai, aksar ek refrain ke saath. Purane ballads bahadur knights ki kahaniyan sunate hain jo khoonkhar dragons ko maarte hain. Nash is parampara ko ulta kar dete hain. Unki poem ek parody hai, yaani ek comic nakal, jiska dragon-hero pinjre mein chhupna pasand karega.

Ek nazar mein. Chaar-chaar lines ke fifteen stanzas, jodi mein rhyme karte hue. Ghar mein hain Belinda naam ki ek ladki; Ink, ek kaala kitten; Blink, ek grey mouse; Mustard, ek peela dog; aur Custard, pet dragon. Unka ghar ek chhota safed ghar hai, aur unke paas ek chhoti laal wagon hai. Akela mehmaan ek pirate hai, aur woh zyada der nahi rukta. Fig. 7.7 track karta hai ki kaun bahadur baatein karta hai aur kaun sach mein bahaduri dikhata hai.

2/3Pirate aata hai: shekhi maarne wale gaayab ho jaate hain aur Custard ladta hai.

Fig. 7.7Baatein aur kaam ulti dishaon mein jaate hain, aur ant mein baatein apni jagah wapas le leti hain.

Paanch bars Belinda, Ink, Blink, Mustard aur Custard ke liye hain. Step 1, Claims: pehli chaar bars lambi hain, jo unki bahaduri ki reputation dikhati hain, jabki Custard ki bar chhoti hai aur us par cage likha hai. Step 2, Pirate: jab pirate aata hai, chaaron lambi bars lagbhag zero tak sikud jaati hain, jin par yells, hides, hides aur flees likha hai, jabki Custard ki bar upar uchhal jaati hai, jis par fights likha hai. Step 3, Afterwards: chaaron bars shekhi maarte hue phir lambi ho jaati hain, do guna aur teen guna ke labels ke saath, jabki Custard ki bar wapas neeche gir jaati hai, jis par modest likha hai.

7.6.1 Poem stanza by stanza

Yeh notes samjhate hain ki har stanza kya karta hai aur uska matlab kya hai. Yeh poem ki jagah nahi lete: apni textbook inke saath khuli rakho.

  • Stanzas 1–2: ghar ke log. Hum Belinda aur uske chaar pets se milte hain, har ek ka ek rang aur naam hai. Naam mazaak hain: Ink ink ki tarah kaala hai, Mustard peela hai aur sauce ki tarah tez, aur Custard ka naam ek naram, hilne wale pudding par hai, yeh clue ki yeh dragon koi hero nahi. Poet humein turant bata dete hain ki woh darpok hai.
  • Stanza 3: Custard kaisa dikhta hai. Bahar se woh sab kuch hai jo ek darawna dragon hona chahiye: daant, kaante, scales, aag bhara munh, dhuaan chhodti naak aur chaakuon jaise panje. Mazaak uske darawne shareer aur uske darpok dil ke beech ke fark mein hai.
  • Stanza 4: bahadur kaun hai? Belinda aur pets ki bahaduri ki tareef badi, badha-chadha kar ki gayi tulnaon se hoti hai. Akela Custard ek pinjre mein band rehna chahta hai jahan use kuch na pahunch sake.
  • Stanzas 5–6: chhedna. Poora ghar Custard ka mazaak udaata hai: gudgudi, ek chidhane wala nickname (Percival), khilkhilahat aur har baar jab woh apna pinjra maangta hai to bure sawaal. Chhota sa mouse bhi shaamil ho jaata hai. 'Bahadur' log usko pareshaan karne ka maza lete hain jise woh kamzor samajhte hain.
  • Stanzas 7–8: khatra. Ek achanak awaaz maze ko tod deti hai: ek pirate khidki se andar chadh raha hai. Nash use comic-book villain ki tarah draw karte hain, ek saath har pirate cliché ke saath, aur koi shak nahi chhodte ki woh nuksaan karne aaya hai.
  • Stanza 9: 'bahadur' gaayab. Belinda bas peeli padkar madad ke liye chilla sakti hai, aur har pet apne comic tareeke se bhaag nikalta hai. Unmein se ek bhi nahi ladta.
  • Stanzas 10–11: Custard hamla karta hai. Dragon badal jaata hai: shor machata, khankhanaata aur khoonkhar, woh shikaar par jhapatte bhookhe panchhi ki tarah toot padta hai. Pirate ki himmat aur hathiyaar uske saamne bekaar hain, aur ladaai ek comic gulp mein khatam ho jaati hai.
  • Stanza 12: jashn. Jo ghar Custard ka mazaak udaata tha, ab use hugs, chaatne aur khushi ke naach se laad deta hai, aur pirate ke liye koi hamdardi nahi. Chhedna hero-worship mein badal gaya hai, kam se kam abhi ke liye.
  • Stanza 13: bahaane. Khatra khatam hote hi pets itihaas dobara likh dete hain: har ek claim karta hai ki agar woh achanak na pakda gaya hota to do-teen guna zyada bahadur hota. Custard, behas karne ke liye bahut vinamra, bas maan leta hai ki sab usse zyada bahadur hain. Mazaak shekhi maarne walon par hai.
  • Stanzas 14–15: wapas shuruaat par. Aakhri do stanzas pehle aur chauthe ko lagbhag waise hi dohraate hain, lekin present tense mein. Kuch nahi badla: baaki ab bhi bahadur kahe jaate hain, aur Custard ab bhi apna pinjra maangta hai. Reputations fixed rehti hain, chahe kaam ne unhe galat saabit kar diya ho.

7.6.2 Tone, humour aur message

Tone aur mood. Tone khilandad aur mock-heroic hai: Nash ek ladaai ki kahani nursery-rhyme wali awaaz mein sunate hain.

Message. Maze ke neeche ek asli idea hai. Sachchi bahaduri kaam mein dikhti hai, words mein nahi, aur aksar us chupchaap wale mein hoti hai jisse koi ummeed nahi karta. Khatra guzar jaane ke baad shekhi maarna aasaan hai. Jeet ke baad Custard ki vinamrata bhi ek tarah ki mahaanta hai. Aur aakhir mein, humein kisi ko label se judge nahi karna chahiye: jis dragon ko darpok kaha gaya, wahi akela ghar bachata hai.

Belinda Custard ko bina raham ke gudgudi kyun karti hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) Darpok hone ke liye uska mazaak udaane ke liye

Sab Custard ko uske darpokpan ke liye chhedte hain; gudgudi us mazaak ka hissa hai. Koi use training nahi de raha: unhe to ummeed hi nahi ki woh ladega.

7.7 Poet ka craft

7.7.1 Rhyme scheme aur rhythm

Rhyme scheme nikalne ke liye, pehli line ki aakhri awaaz ko letter A do, agli nayi awaaz ko B, aur aise hi aage. Is poem ka har stanza jodi mein, yaani couplets mein, rhyme karta hai: AABB. Beat tez aur uchhalti hui hai, zor se padhne ke liye bani hai, haalaanki Nash khushi se kuch lines ko baaki se lamba kheench dete hain.

Nash ki favourite trick comic rhyme hai: woh rhyme banane ke liye kisi word ko tod-marod dete hain, ya naya word bana dete hain. Belinda se match karne ke liye window winda ban jaati hai, aur household se rhyme karne ke liye mouse ek naye verb, mouseholed, mein ek hole mein ghus jaata hai. unmerciful jaise lambe word ko Percival naam se rhyme karwaya jaata hai. Yeh zabardasti ke rhymes maze ka hissa hain (Fig. 7.8).

4/4Nash rhyme ke liye spellings aur words khud bana lete hain.

Fig. 7.8Rhyming couplets (AABB), kuch words ko rhyme ke liye tod-marod kar.

Chaar bars stanza 1 ki chaar lines ke liye hain, har ek apne aakhri word ke saath: house, mouse, wagon aur dragon. Step 1 lines dikhata hai. Step 2 pehli do lines par letter A lagata hai aur unhe jodta hai, kyunki house aur mouse rhyme karte hain. Step 3 aakhri do lines par B lagata hai aur unhe jodta hai, kyunki wagon aur dragon rhyme karte hain. Step 4 poem se teen comic rhyme pairs jodta hai: Belinda ke saath winda, household ke saath mouseholed, aur unmerciful ke saath Percival.

7.7.2 Poetic devices aur imagery

Tumhari textbook ek simile deti hai, dragon ki poonchh dungeon mein lohe ki tarah khankhanaati hai, aur tumse aur dhoondhne ko kehti hai. Table main devices ko ikattha karti hai, saath mein yeh ki woh kahan milte hain aur har ek kya karta hai.

Table 7.5Poem mein devices

SimileBelinda aur “a barrel full of bears” (st. 4); “snorting like an engine” (st. 10)vivid, mazedaar bahaduri aur gussa

Irony'darpok' hi akela hai jo ladta haicentral mazaak aur seekh
Inversionrhyme banaye rakhne ke liye stanza 12 mein word order ultapurane ballad jaisa flavour

Alliteration, onomatopoeia aur hyperbole sab yahan ek hi kaam karte hain: pirate ke saath ladaai ko cartoon jaisa feel karaana. Chimney-nose wala metaphor ek monster ko ghar ke furniture ka ek hissa bana deta hai.

Imagery. Imagery humein bina bataye dekhne aur sunne deti hai. Custard ki kaanton bhari peeth aur dhuaan chhodti naak ki kalpana karo; pirate jiske dono haathon mein hathiyaar hain aur ek daanton ke beech; hanste jaanwaron se bhari chhoti laal wagon. Dragon ki poonchh ki khankhanaahat, mouse ki chee-chee aur dog ki yelp suno. Sabse achchhi action image hai Custard ka pirate par “like a robin at a worm” jhapatna: utaavla, bhookha aur sahaj, jaise pirates ko khaana duniya ka sabse aasaan kaam ho.

  1. Quick answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q1

Poem ke har naam ko character se match karo.

Left mein koi item tap karo, phir right mein uska match.

    Answer dekho
    Answer
    • Belinda : ladki
    • Ink : kaala kitten
    • Blink : grey mouse
    • Mustard : peela dog
    • Custard : dragon
    • Percival : chidhane wala nickname
Har pet ka naam uske rang ya swabhaav se match karta hai; Percival woh naam hai jisse pets badtameezi se Custard ko chhedte hain.
  2. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q2

Custard baar-baar ek surakshit pinjra kyun maangta hai, aur baaki use darpok dragon kyun kehte hain?

    Solution dikhao

Custard is timid and afraid of danger, so he wants a cage where he will be protected. Although he looks fierce, with teeth, spikes and a fiery mouth, he behaves fearfully, while the others claim great courage. So they call him a coward.

  3. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q3

Belinda Custard ko itni berehmi se gudgudi kyun karti hai?

    Solution dikhao

She is teasing him for being a coward. The whole household mocks Custard: the tickling, the nickname and the laughter show that nobody takes him seriously. This makes his later bravery more surprising.

  4. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q4

Khankhanaati poonchh wali simile ke alawa, poem mein teen aur devices dhoondho. Har ek ka naam batao aur woh kahan hai.

    Solution dikhao
    • Simile: Belinda's courage compared to a barrel of bears (stanza 4).
    • Onomatopoeia: the mouse's Weeck and the kitten's Meowch (stanzas 6 and 7).
    • Alliteration: clatter and clank in stanza 10.
    • Others: the chimney-nose metaphor, hyperbole, repetition of realio, trulio, and the refrain at the end.
  5. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q5

Stanza 3 ki madad se batao ki Custard kaisa dikhta hai. Yeh description mazedaar kyun hai?

    Solution dikhao

He has large, sharp teeth, a spiky back and a scaly belly, a mouth that holds fire like a hearth, a smoking nose and claws as sharp as daggers. It is funny because such a terrifying body belongs to a dragon who is scared of everything.

  6. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q6

Stanzas 1, 7 aur 10 ki rhyme scheme mark karo, aur har ek ke rhyme karne wale aakhri words likho.

    Solution dikhao
    • Stanza 1: house / mouse, wagon / dragon: AABB.
    • Stanza 7: sound / around, Belinda / winda: AABB.
    • Stanza 10: engine / dungeon, squirm / worm: AABB (engine and dungeon are a near rhyme).
  7. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q7

Poem se do images chuno aur batao ki har ek tumhe kya dekhne ya sunne mein madad karti hai.

    Solution dikhao
    • The armed pirate (stanza 8), with weapons in both hands and a sword between his teeth: a cartoon villain, frightening and comic at once.
    • Custard's attack, with his tail clanking like iron chains: we hear a noisy, metallic machine of a dragon charging into battle.
  8. Long answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q8

Kya The Tale of Custard the Dragon ek serious poem hai ya halki-phulki? Reasons do.

    Solution dikhao

It is light-hearted. The pets have funny food and colour names, the poet invents words like realio and trulio, and animal noises and comic rhymes such as winda make us laugh. Even the fight is cartoon-like: the pirate is simply gobbled up. The ending, where the boasters boast again and Custard still wants his cage, is a joke. Yet the fun carries a serious point: real courage is shown in action, not words.

    • Key points: clear answer (light-hearted)
    • two or three humorous features
    • the comic ending
    • the serious idea underneath
  9. ActivityEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q9

Koi modern song, ya koi folk song dhoondho jo ek story sunata ho. Uski story class ko sunao, aur aise songs ka ek class collection shuru karo.

    Solution dikhao

Aise songs dhoondho jinmein characters, events aur ek ending ho. India mein ballads ki ameer parampara hai, jaise Bundelkhand ke Alha songs jo yoddha bhaiyon Alha aur Udal ke baare mein hain, aur kai film aur folk songs bhi ek story sunate hain. Story apne words mein dobara sunao, characters ke naam batao aur batao ki song ka refrain kya jodta hai.

7.8 Writing: tumhara apna ballad

Ab apna ek ballad likho. Iska purpose entertain karna hai, isliye koi mazedaar ya hairaan karne wali story chuno. Pehle apni audience tay karo: classmates, chhote bachche ya tumhari family. Phir ek idea socho, apne material ko characters aur story mein baanto, likho, aur tab tak revise karo jab tak ise zor se padhne mein maza na aaye. Fig. 7.9 recipe deta hai.

5/5Ise chhote, chaar line ke verses mein baanto.

Fig. 7.9Story, characters, beat aur rhyme, refrain, verses: ek ballad ki paanch cheezein.

Paanch numbered cards har step mein ek-ek karke aate hain. Step 1, Simple story: ek shuruaat, ek problem aur ek twist. Step 2, Few characters: do se chaar. Step 3, Beat and rhyme: rhyme karti lines ke saath ek steady rhythm. Step 4, Refrain: dohraayi jaane wali lines, chorus ki tarah. Step 5, Short verses: poem chaar line ke stanzas mein bata hota hai.

Dekho kya ise ballad banata hai: problem aur twist wali simple story, kuch hi characters, AABB mein rhyme karte chaar line ke verses, ek refrain jo ant mein badal jaata hai, aur humour. Nash ki poem ki tarah, yeh bhi is par khatam hota hai ki sabse zor se bolne wale credit le lete hain jabki chupchaap hero kuch nahi kehta.

  1. Short answerEasy

Valli ne conductor ki cold drink ki offer kyun mana kar di?

    Solution dikhao

    • Key points: no money to spare
    • refuses even a free treat
    • self-respect
  2. Short answerEasy

Valli ne maa ko pata chale bina apni trip kaise ki?

    Solution dikhao

Valli chose the afternoon, when her mother usually slept from roughly one till four. She took the bus, stayed on board in the town and came straight back, reaching her village at 3:40. She told nobody and only smiled when her aunt asked where she had been.

    • Key points: mother's afternoon nap
    • no stop in town
    • kept it secret
  3. Short answerEasy

Conductor ka Valli ko diya gaya nickname “madam” samjhao. Kya yeh us par jachta hai?

    Solution dikhao

Valli stopped the bus, refused help, paid her own fare and talked like an adult, so the jolly conductor teasingly called her “madam”. The name suits her well: she was proud and independent beyond her years, though her laughter showed she was still a child.

    • Key points: her grown-up behaviour
    • affectionate teasing
    • a reasoned judgement
  4. Short answerEasy

Custard ko darpok kyun kaha jaata tha, aur usne sabko galat kaise saabit kiya?

    Solution dikhao

Custard was timid and kept crying for a safe cage, so the others mocked him as a coward. When a pirate broke in, Belinda and the pets ran, hid or screamed, but Custard charged at him. The pirate's shots missed, and Custard swallowed him whole.

    • Key points: wanted a cage, mocked
    • others fled
    • Custard fought and won
  5. Short answerMedium

The Tale of Custard the Dragon ko ballad kyun kaha jaata hai, aur yeh parody ke kareeb kyun hai?

    Solution dikhao

It tells a story in short four-line stanzas, with simple language, a strong beat, rhyme and a refrain, like a ballad. It is close to a parody because it mocks heroic dragon tales: here the timid dragon is the hero, while the so-called brave ones behave like cowards.

    • Key points: ballad features
    • mocks heroic tales
    • role reversal
  6. Short answerMedium

Story ke ant mein Valli ki secret muskaan ka kya matlab tha?

    • first experience of death
    • dramatic irony and maturity

Practice questions answers ke saath (NCERT “Long-answer questions (100–120 words)”)

  1. Long answerMedium

Story se evidence lekar Valli ka character sketch likho.

    Solution dikhao

Valli is an eight-year-old girl with a big will. She is curious, spending hours watching her street and longing to see the town. She is determined and a careful planner: she gathers facts quietly, works out fares and timings, and saves sixty paise, even giving up a merry-go-round ride. She is proud and independent, refusing help to board and insisting she is not a child. She has self-respect, paying her own way and refusing a free drink. Yet she is still a child who laughs at a running cow and fears exploring the town alone. Sensitive and thoughtful, she is saddened by the dead cow and keeps her experience to herself.

    • Key points: curious
    • determined planner
    • independent and proud
    • self-respecting
    • childlike yet sensitive
  2. Long answerHard

“Valli's bus ride taught her more than the sights of the town.” Is par charcha karo.

    Solution dikhao

Valli set out simply to enjoy a bus ride, and the outward journey gave her exactly that: the canal road, the green fields, a galloping cow, a roaring train and dazzling shops. The return journey taught her something far deeper. The same cow that had made her laugh now lay dead by the road. For the first time she felt what death means: sudden, final and ugly. Her joy vanished, and she stopped looking outside. At home her mother remarked that we often know things without truly understanding them, and Valli agreed from experience. She had learnt that life is uncertain and that knowing and understanding are different. She returned a little older and wiser.

    • Key points: joy of the outward ride
    • the dead cow
    • death felt for the first time
    • knowing vs understanding
    • growth
  3. Long answerMedium

“True courage is shown in action, not in words.” The Tale of Custard the Dragon ke reference se is par charcha karo.

    Solution dikhao

In the poem, Belinda and her pets are described as amazingly brave, while Custard is mocked as a coward who wants a safe cage. When a real pirate breaks in, the truth comes out. Belinda turns pale and screams, Mustard runs off, and Ink and Blink hide. Only Custard acts: he charges the armed pirate and gobbles him up. Afterwards the pets boast that they would have been even braver, but their words mean nothing. Custard, the true hero, stays modest and agrees that everyone is braver than him. Nash's comic ballad shows that real courage is proved when danger comes, and that the quiet ones are often the bravest.

    • Key points: reputations before
    • actions during the attack
    • boasting afterwards
    • Custard's modesty
    • a clear conclusion
  4. Long answerHard

Kya bachchon ko Valli ki tarah akele duniya explore karne deni chahiye? Story ka reference dete hue reasons ke saath apni raay do.

    Solution dikhao

Children should be encouraged to explore, but with their parents' knowledge and sensible limits. Exploring builds confidence, independence and curiosity. Valli's trip shows this: she planned, saved, managed money and learnt about life and death in one afternoon. However, she took real risks. She stood on a moving bus seat, travelled to a strange town and told nobody where she was. If something had gone wrong, her family would not have known where to look. The conductor's kindness protected her, but not every stranger is kind. So children should be given small, growing freedoms, such as short trips on familiar routes, while parents stay informed. Freedom with safety helps them grow.

    • Key points: clear opinion
    • benefits of exploring
    • risks in Valli's trip
    • balanced conclusion
