2.1 Padhne se pehle

15 August 1947 ke India ke baare mein socho: ek flag lehrata hai, ek naya leader bolta hai, aur karodon log mehsoos karte hain ki ek lambi struggle khatam ho gayi. South Africa mein bhi aisa ek din aaya tha: 10 May 1994. Us subah Nelson Mandela, jo 27 saal jail mein reh chuke the, desh ke president bane.

Yeh itna khaas kyun tha? Twentieth century ke zyadatar hisse mein South Africa par ek white minority ka raaj tha. 1948 se government ne is raaj ko law ke ek poore system mein badal diya, jise apartheid (रंगभेद) kehte hain. Yeh Afrikaans ka word hai, jiska matlab hai ‘apartness’, yaani alag-alag rehna.

Definition
Apartheid

South Africa mein 1948 se early 1990s tak laws ka ek system, jo logon ko race ke hisaab se baant deta tha, races ko ek doosre se alag rakhta tha aur white logon ko baaki sab par power deta tha.

ExampleApartheid ke dauraan ek black family ko kisi aise neighbourhood se zabardasti nikala ja sakta tha jise ‘for whites only’ declare kar diya gaya ho.

Apartheid mein law har insaan ko ek racial group mein daal deta tha. Wahi group tay karta tha ki tum kahan reh sakte ho, kis school mein padh sakte ho, kaun sa beach ya bus use kar sakte ho, aur yahan tak ki kisse shaadi kar sakte ho. Black majority ke paas vote ka koi haq nahi tha. Fig. 2.1 dikhata hai ki in laws ne desh ko kaise baant diya, aur har race ke liye khule pehle election ne is batwaare ko kaise khatam kiya.

1/3Apartheid laws logon ko rehne aur padhne ki jagahon mein alag rakhte the, aur zyadatar logon ke paas vote nahi tha.

Fig. 2.1Logon ko baantne wale laws se har adult ke vote tak.NCERT p. 16

Ek line mein teen signboards khade hain, jin par 'Alag areas', 'Alag schools' aur 'No vote for most' likha hai, aur upar heading hai 'Apartheid: law baantta hai'. Doosre step mein heading badal kar 'Decades ki struggle' ho jaati hai aur teeno boards mein daraar aa jaati hai, aur woh aise jhukte hain jaise koi unhe gira raha ho. Teesre step mein boards gayab ho jaate hain; beech mein VOTE likha ek ballot box khada hai jismein ek paper ja raha hai, heading '27 April 1994' ho jaati hai aur uske paas 'one person, one vote' words dikhte hain.

Yeh chapter Mandela ki autobiography Long Walk to Freedom (1994) ka ek extract hai. Iske do halves hain. Pehle woh apne inauguration ko describe karte hain, yaani woh ceremony jismein unhone president ka pad sambhala. Phir woh peeche mudkar dekhte hain ki unki life mein freedom, courage aur duty ka kya matlab raha.

Padhne se pehle: inauguration sabse zyada kya ho sakta hai…
Answer dekho

Answer (A) ek formal ceremony jismein naya leader office sambhalta hai

Inauguration woh ceremony hai jisse kisi leader ka term formally shuru hota hai. Mandela ka inauguration 10 May 1994 ko hua, election ke do hafte baad; marches aur court cases struggle mein pehle aaye the.

2.2 Part 1: Inauguration

Kya hota hai. Mausam bhi jashn manata lagta hai: aasmaan saaf aur chamakdar hai. Fig. 2.2 poore din ko paanch stops mein map karta hai; yeh part pehle do stops cover karta hai.

5/5Mandela lambi struggle aur uske heroes ko yaad karte hain.

Fig. 2.2Inauguration ka din, ek story map ke roop mein.NCERT p. 17

'10 May 1994, Pretoria' title wala ek road map, jismein paanch numbered stops ek ghumaavdaar sadak se jude hain. Step 1 mein sirf stop 1, 'Oaths', saaf dikhta hai; baaki stops halke hain. Step 2 mein stop 2, 'Speech', judta hai. Step 3 mein stop 3, 'Fly-past', judta hai, jahan sadak neeche ki taraf mudti hai. Step 4 mein neeche wali sadak par stop 4, 'Do anthems', judta hai. Step 5 mein stop 5, 'Sense of history', judta hai, jisse din bhar ka safar poora hota hai.

Setting ke baare mein socho. Pretoria ki Union Buildings, sandstone ki ek curved imaarat jo 1913 mein bankar taiyaar hui, un governments ka ghar rahi thi jinhone apartheid chalaya. Is din uska open-air amphitheatre har rang aur har desh ke logon se bhara tha, jo sabhi South Africans ki chuni hui government ko office sambhalte dekhne aaye the. Jagah khud is badlaav ki kahani keh rahi thi.

Teen oaths liye gaye, aur unka order khud ek message de raha tha. Aakhri white president, F. W. de Klerk, ab second deputy president bane. ANC ke Thabo Mbeki first deputy president bane. Phir Mandela ne, apni beti Zenani ko saath lekar, Constitution ke prati loyalty ki shapath li aur desh aur uske logon ki seva ka vaada kiya.

Speech. Phir Mandela ne guests se aur television par dekh rahe karodon logon se baat ki. Ise line by line dohraane ke bajaay, iske ideas ko chaar groups mein baanto:

  • Peeche mudkar dekhna: apartheid ek extraordinary human disaster tha, aur woh bahut lamba chala; aur naye leaders ko kuch hi samay pehle tak outlaws maana jaata tha.
  • Shukriya: duniya ke leaders ek aisi jeet mein shaamil hone aaye hain jo sabki hai, justice, peace aur human dignity ki jeet.
  • Vaade: political freedom mil gayi hai; ab poverty, bhookh, takleef aur har tarah ke discrimination se freedom chahiye, women ke khilaaf discrimination se bhi. Ek group phir kabhi doosre group ko nahi kuchlega.
  • Ummeed: itni takleef se ek aisi society ugni chahiye jis par poori insaaniyat garv kar sake, ek glorious human achievement jo hamesha tike.

Let freedom reign. God bless Africa!

Nelson MandelaInaugural address, 10 May 1994

‘Outlaws’ kyun? ANC 1960 se 1990 tak ek banned organisation tha, aur uske leaders ka peecha kiya gaya, unhe jail mein daala gaya ya desh chhodne par majboor kiya gaya. Isi beech duniya ke zyadatar hisse ne apartheid state se munh mod liya tha. Isliye is din wahi purane ‘criminals’ duniya ke leaders ka swagat kar rahe the.

‘Extraordinary human disaster’ se Mandela ka kya matlab hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (C) apartheid ke lambe saal

Woh apartheid ki baat kar rahe hain: decades tak chala racial rule jisne karodon logon ko nuksaan pahunchaya. Anglo-Boer War ek asli event hai, lekin woh bahut pehle khatam ho chuki thi aur yahan uski baat nahi ho rahi.

2.3 Part 2: History ka ehsaas

Fly-past. Iske baad ek aisa nazaara aaya jisne poori bheed ko upar dekhne par majboor kar diya. Air force ke planes aur helicopters perfect formation mein Union Buildings ke upar se guzre. Mandela ismein ek message padhte hain. Yahi forces kabhi apartheid ki raksha karti thi; ab woh ek aisi government ke samman mein ud rahi thi jise logon ne azaadi se chuna tha. Unka hunar democracy ke prati loyalty ka vaada bhi tha.

Is irony par unka dhyaan gaya. Usi din pehle, desh ke sabse bade army aur police generals ne, jinke seene par apartheid ke saalon ke medals the, unhe salute kiya aur loyalty ki shapath li. Kuch hi samay pehle unka kaam unhe giraftaar karna hota. Show ke aakhir mein jets ne aasmaan ko naye flag ke rangon se rang diya.

Do anthems. Mandela ko bharosa tha ki woh jald hi inhe bina galti ke gaane lagenge.

History ka ehsaas. Wahan khade hokar Mandela ne past ka bojh mehsoos kiya. Woh lagbhag nabbe saal ke faasle par do pal compare karte hain: woh decade jismein racial rule bana, aur woh decade, unki apni zindagi ka aathvaan, jismein woh gira. Neeche ka comparison dono ko saath-saath rakhta hai.

Compare

Do decades, do systems

1900s ka pehla decade

  • Anglo-Boer War abhi-abhi khatam hui thi.
  • White groups ne aapas mein sulah kar li.
  • Milkar unhone dark-skinned majority par racial rule ka system banaya.
  • Mandela tab paida bhi nahi hue the.

1900s ka aakhri decade

  • Racial rule ko ukhaad phenka gaya.
  • Ek naye system ne sabke rights maane, chahe unka rang kuch bhi ho.
  • Mandela, ab apne aathven decade mein, naye nation ko lead kar rahe the.

Mandela is jeet ka credit khud nahi lete. Unki nazar mein yeh jeet hazaaron aam logon ne apni takleef aur kurbaani se banayi, jise kabhi naapa nahi ja sakta. Ek relay race ke baare mein socho: unse pehle ke patriots decades tak baton lekar daude the, aur ab woh unke haathon mein pahuncha tha. Unka ek hi dukh tha ki woh log finish line nahi dekh paaye, aur woh unhe shukriya nahi keh sake.

Yahan Mandela ek hairaan karne wali baat kehte hain. Apartheid ki cruelty ne hi uske sabse bade virodhi paida kiye: Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu aur Chief Albert Luthuli jaise leaders, jinki bahaduri, samajhdaari aur bada dil shayad kabhi koi match na kar sake. Unke shabdon mein, depths of oppression ne heights of character banaye (Fig. 2.3). Woh yeh nahi kehte ki keemat chhoti thi, kyunki zakhm bharne mein peedhiyaan lag sakti hain. Lekin woh zor dete hain ki desh ki asli daulat uski mines mein nahi, balki aise logon mein hai.

3/3Mandela Tambo, Sisulu aur Luthuli jaise leaders ke naam lete hain.

Fig. 2.3Mandela ka paradox: sakht oppression ne mahaan character wale log paida kiye.NCERT p. 20

Step 1 mein left par sirf ek gehri V-shape wali ghaati dikhti hai, jis par 'Depths of oppression' likha hai. Step 2 mein right par ek oonchi choti uthti hai, jis par 'Heights of character' likha hai, aur 'produced' label wala ek curved arrow ghaati se choti tak jaata hai. Step 3 mein choti ke neeche Tambo, Sisulu, Luthuli, Dadoo, Fischer aur Sobukwe ke naam aate hain.

Table 2.1Mandela jin saathiyon ke naam lete hain

Oliver TamboMandela ke law partner; kai saal tak exile se ANC ko lead kiya
Walter SisuluANC leader aur Mandela ke mentor; Robben Island par unke saath jail mein rahe

Robert SobukwePan Africanist Congress (1959) ke founder; Robben Island par akele qaid rakhe gaye

Courage.

…not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.

Nelson MandelaLong Walk to Freedom

Matlab, ek bahadur insaan ko bhi darr lagta hai, lekin woh darr ko faisla nahi karne deta. Ek aisi student ke baare mein socho jo kaanpte haathon ke bawajood ek bully ki complaint karti hai. Woh us insaan se zyada bahadur hai jise kabhi darr laga hi nahi.

Pyaar aur nafrat. Iska saboot unki apni zindagi mein tha: jail ke sabse mushkil saalon mein kabhi-kabhi koi guard thodi si kindness dikhata, aur unki ummeed zinda rakhne ke liye itna kaafi tha. Unka nateeja hai ki achhaai dhaki hui flame ki tarah chhupi ho sakti hai, lekin use bujhaaya nahi ja sakta.

Generals ka salute Mandela ke liye itna maayne kyun rakhta tha?
Answer dekho

Answer (D) Kuch hi saal pehle woh unhe giraftaar kar lete.

Jo officers kabhi apartheid ki seva karte the, ab unhone unke prati loyalty ki shapath li. Is badlaav ne dikhaya ki forces ne democracy ko maan liya tha. Woh hamesha se ANC ko support nahi karte the.

2.4 Part 3: Twin obligations aur freedom ki bhookh

Ab Mandela apni zindagi ki taraf mudte hain, aur ek aise conflict ki taraf jise har freedom fighter jaanta hai. Woh kehte hain ki hum sab do groups ke prati kuch zimmedaari rakhte hain: apni family, aur apne logon aur nation ki badi family. Woh in duties ko twin obligations (दायित्व) kehte hain.

Ek taraazu socho jiske ek palde mein family hai aur doosre mein log (Fig. 2.4). Ek fair, insaaniyat bhari society mein insaan dono ko balance mein rakh sakta hai, har koi apne tarike se. Apartheid mein yeh lagbhag namumkin tha. Jo black aadmi apne logon ke liye kaam karta, police uske peeche pad jaati, isliye use ghar chhodkar chhupkar rehna padta. Mandela ise twilight existence kehte hain: chhupne aur resistance ki zindagi.

3/3Unki family ne ek beta, bhai, pita aur pati kho diya.

Fig. 2.4Mandela ki twin obligations, aur apartheid ne balance ke saath kya kiya.NCERT p. 21

Do paldon wala ek taraazu, left par 'Family' aur right par 'Uske log'. Step 1 mein, jiski heading 'Fair society mein' hai, dandi seedhi hai aur dono palde barabar hain. Step 2 mein, jiski heading 'In apartheid South Africa' hai, dandi jhuk jaati hai: 'Uske log' wala palda neeche jaata hai aur 'Family' wala upar uthta hai. Step 3 mein, jiski heading 'Uski family ka nuksaan' hai, upar uthe family palde ke neeche 'beta, bhai, pita, pati' words aate hain, yaani woh roles jo woh nibha nahi sake.

Fig. 2.5Har stage ne Mandela ke freedom ke idea ko aur bada kiya.NCERT p. 22

Paanch seedhiyon wali ek staircase jo neeche left se upar right ki taraf chadhti hai. Step 1 mein sirf sabse neeche wali seedhi roshan hoti hai, 'Ladka: gaon mein azaad'. Step 2 mein 'Student: apne liye azaadi' judta hai. Step 3 mein 'Naujawaan: kaam aur family' judta hai. Step 4 mein 'ANC: apne logon ki azaadi' judta hai. Step 5 mein sabse upar wali seedhi roshan hoti hai, 'Leader: oppressor bhi azaad ho', aur poori chadhaai dikh jaati hai.

  1. Bachpan: apne gaon mein woh poori tarah azaad mehsoos karte the: bahar khelna, tairna, makke ke bhutte (mealies) bhoonna, bailon ki sawaari karna. Sirf unke father ki baat aur unke clan ke customs hi koi seema tay karte the.
  2. Student ke din: unhone seekha ki yeh freedom ek illusion thi. Shuru mein woh apne liye sirf chhoti, transitory freedoms chahte the, jaise der se ghar aana, apni pasand ki kitaabein chunna aur jahan mann ho wahan jaana.
  3. Johannesburg mein naujawaan: woh basic, izzatdaar freedoms chahte the: apni kaabiliyat ka poora use karna, rozi-roti kamaana, shaadi karna aur family badhaana, bina law ke raasta roke.
  4. ANC mein shaamil hona: unhone dekha ki unke jaise dikhne wala har insaan utna hi bandhan mein tha. Apni freedom ki unki bhookh apne logon ki freedom ki badi bhookh ban gayi.
  5. Mature leader: unhone samjha ki freedom ko baanta nahi ja sakta, aur oppressor ko bhi azaad karna zaroori hai.

Is bhookh ne unki poori zindagi badal di. Table mein before-and-after pairs dekho.

Table 2.2Freedom ki chaah ne Mandela ko kaise badla

Mandela saint hone ka daava nahi karte. Unki baat seedhi hai: jab tak unke logon ke paas freedom nahi thi, unki apni thodi si freedom bhi unhe khokhli lagti thi.

Freedom indivisible hai. Mandela ka aakhri idea sabse gehra hai. Freedom ko tukdon mein nahi baanta ja sakta: jab tak koi bhi South African oppressed tha, har South African, Mandela samet, azaad nahi tha. Phir aata hai unka sabse bada-dil wala vichaar: jailer ko bhi utni hi azaadi ki zaroorat hai jitni prisoner ko. Nafrat aur prejudice (पूर्वाग्रह) unhe rakhne wale insaan ko hi qaid kar dete hain, aur cruelty sirf sehne wale ki nahi, karne wale ki insaaniyat ko bhi nuksaan pahunchaati hai.

Step 2 mein teen public qualities solid boxes mein roshan hoti hain: Courageous, Patriotic aur Wise. Step 3 mein teen personal qualities dashed boxes mein roshan hoti hain: Forgiving, Humble aur Selfless.

  • Courageous: woh decades tak apartheid se lade aur haar maane bina 27 saal jail mein kaate; woh courage ko darr par jeet kehte hain.
  • Patriotic: woh apne logon ko desh ki asli daulat kehte hain aur unki freedom ko apne aaraam se upar rakhte hain.
  • Wise: woh samajhte hain ki nafrat seekhi jaati hai, freedom ko baanta nahi ja sakta aur oppressors ko bhi azaadi chahiye.
  • Forgiving: woh purane dushmanon, de Klerk aur generals, ko bina kadwaahat ke naye nation mein partners ke roop mein apnaate hain.
  • Humble: woh khud ko bas apne se pehle ke patriots ka jod kehte hain, kisi aur se zyada nek nahi.
  • Selfless: unhone apne logon ke liye family life, ghar aur suraksha chhod di.

2.5.1 Themes aur message

  • Freedom: iska matlab personal maze se badhkar poore logon ki freedom tak, aur aakhir mein oppressor ko bhi azaad karne tak pahunchta hai.
  • Equality aur reconciliation: do anthems, generals ka salute aur ‘rainbow’ crowd dikhate hain ki purane dushman ek desh ko saath baantna seekh rahe hain.
  • Courage aur sacrifice: naya nation hazaaron logon ki kurbaaniyon par khada hai.
  • Insaan ki achhaai: pyaar nafrat se zyada natural hai, aur achhaai chhupi ho sakti hai, lekin khatam nahi ki ja sakti.
  • Duty: twin obligations ka takraav public service ki personal keemat dikhata hai.

Message. Freedom har kurbaani ke laayak hai, lekin woh ya to sabki hoti hai ya kisi ki nahi. Nafrat seekhi jaati hai, isliye use bhulaaya bhi ja sakta hai.

2.6.2 Names ke saath ‘the’ ka use

Aam taur par hum kisi insaan ke naam se pehle the nahi lagaate, aur naamon ko plural nahi banate. Hum Mandela kehte hain, the Mandela ya Mandelas nahi. Lekin writers kabhi-kabhi jaan-boojhkar yeh rule todte hain, aur tab naam ka ek khaas matlab ho jaata hai:

  • the + plural name = us insaan jaise log. Our district has produced the Mary Koms of tomorrow ka matlab hai ki district ne Mary Kom jitne talented young boxers paida kiye hain.
  • the + name + of + koi group ya samay = woh insaan jo wahan woh role nibhata hai. Riya is the Lata Mangeshkar of our school ka matlab hai ki woh school ki sabse achhi singer hai.
  • the + plural surname = poori family. The Iyers are coming for dinner ka matlab hai ki Iyer family aa rahi hai.
  • a + name = us insaan jaisa koi. He thinks he is a Tendulkar ka matlab hai ki use lagta hai woh Sachin Tendulkar jaisi batting karta hai.

To jab Mandela kehte hain ki oppression ne the Tambos aur the Sisulus paida kiye, to unka matlab hai ki usne unke jaise bahut se log paida kiye, aise heroes bhi jinke naam duniya shayad kabhi na jaane.

2.6.3 Idiomatic expressions

Idiom words ka aisa group hota hai jiska matlab uske alag-alag words ke matlab se alag hota hai. Mandela kai idioms use karte hain. Har ek ko text mein dhoondho, phir hamari explanation aur example padho.

Har idiom ka matlab uske words se zyada hai: keep going ummeed ke baare mein hai, chalne ke baare mein nahi; earn one's keep rehne ke kharche ke baare mein hai, badi salary ke baare mein nahi.

2.6.4 Homophones aur homographs

Kuch words hume isliye confuse karte hain kyunki woh ek jaise sunai dete hain ya ek jaise dikhte hain. Homophones ek jaise sunai dete hain lekin unka matlab alag hota hai, aur aksar spelling bhi: peace aur piece, reign aur rain. Mandela ki pukaar ‘Let freedom reign’ ka rain ke saath bada ajeeb matlab ho jaata! Homographs ki spelling same hoti hai lekin matlab alag hota hai, aur kabhi-kabhi sound bhi.

  • The farmer will lead the cattle past the old lead pipes. Pehla need ke saath rhyme karta hai (raasta dikhana); doosra bed ke saath rhyme karta hai (ek bhaari metal).
  • A tear rolled down her cheek when she saw the tear in her new kurta. Pehla fear ke saath rhyme karta hai; doosra bear ke saath (phata hua hissa).
  • Please close the window; the storm is close. Pehla z sound par khatam hota hai (band karna); doosra s sound par (paas).
  • She bought a pair of sandals and a pear. Yeh homophones hain: same sound, alag spelling.

Mandela ummeed karte the ki South Africa mein freedom karegi, yaani us par raaj karegi.

Answer reign

Reign ka matlab hai raaj karna. Rain baadalon se girta paani hai, aur rein ghode ko chalaane wala patta hai; teeno ki sound same hai.

2.7 Speaking aur writing

2.7.1 Speaking: do minute ki speech

Task. Groups mein topic ko discuss karo, notes likho, aur phir do minute ki speech do. Topic: a person is truly free only when free from poverty, want and every kind of discrimination. Tumhara group yeh discuss kar sakta hai ki poverty kyun hai aur use kaise khatam karein, gender, religion, caste ya class ke aadhaar par discrimination, aur woh rights jinki guarantee hamara Constitution deta hai.

2.7.2 Writing: balance aur contrast

Mandela ki prose balance se bhari hai: ek sentence do halves mein bant jaata hai jo ek doosre ke against tulte hain. Aksar ek half batata hai kya tha aur doosra kya hai, ya ek kehta hai kya nahi hai aur doosra kya hai. Chhote signal words dono halves ko jodkar rakhte hain: but, and now, yet, although, not only … but also. Fig. 2.8 part 1 ke ek contrast ko seesaw ke roop mein dikhata hai.

3/3Doosra half present batata hai, aur sentence balance ho jaata hai.

Fig. 2.8Ek balanced sentence past ko present ke against tolta hai.NCERT p. 26

'A two-part contrast' title ke neeche ek triangular pivot par rakha seesaw. Step 1 mein plank par sirf left half, 'Once: seat of white rule', hai, aur plank left ki taraf neeche jhuka hai. Step 2 mein pivot ke upar signal words 'and now' wala ek box aata hai. Step 3 mein right par doosra half, 'Now: a meeting of all races', aata hai aur plank seedha ho jaata hai, yaani sentence balance mein hai.

Text mein contrast pakadne ke liye signal words dhoondho aur poochho ki kin do cheezon ko toula ja raha hai. Text mein yeh chhe contrasts dhoondho aur har ek mein signal word note karo:

  1. Union Buildings past mein aur 10 May 1994 ko
  2. generals ne us din kya kiya aur kuch saal pehle woh kya karte
  3. us din har group doosre ka anthem kitna achha jaanta tha, aur baad mein
  4. South Africa ki zameen ke neeche ki daulat aur uska asli khazaana
  5. fly-past taakat ke dikhaave ke roop mein aur loyalty ki nishaani ke roop mein
  6. freedom ki chaah jaagne se pehle aur baad mein Mandela kya the

Har pair ek signal se juda hai: once … now, but, although, not only … also.

2.7.3 Writing: apni opinion likhna

Task. Kya hamare apne desh mein skin colour ko lekar prejudice hai? Kisi dost ke saath is par baat karo, phir apni opinion dete hue 100–150 words ka ek paragraph likho. Chaaho to ise thoda halka-phulka bhi bana sakte ho.

2.8 A Tiger in the Zoo

Kya tumne kabhi zoo mein kisi badi billi ko apne enclosure ke saamne upar-neeche, upar-neeche chalte dekha hai? Wildlife experts ise pacing kehte hain, aur yeh aksar stress ki nishaani hoti hai. Leslie Norris ki chhoti si poem hume aise ek tiger ko dekhne aur yeh sochne ko kehti hai ki uski asli jagah kahan hai.

Poem mein chaar-chaar lines ke paanch stanzas hain. Yeh cage se bahar jungle mein jaati hai aur phir cage mein laut aati hai (Fig. 2.9). Stanza 1 tiger ko uske cage mein dikhata hai, stanzas 2 aur 3 use jungle mein imagine karte hain, aur stanzas 4 aur 5 zoo mein laut aate hain, pehle din mein aur phir raat mein.

4/4Zoo mein raat: woh azaad stars ko ektak dekhta hai.

Fig. 2.9Poem ka safar: zoo, jungle, aur wapas zoo.NCERT p. 29

Do panels saath-saath: left par cage ki bars ke saath 'Zoo mein' aur right par ghaas aur pedon ke saath 'Jungle mein'. Numbered circles stanzas dikhate hain: zoo mein 1 Pacing, 4 Locked in aur 5 Staring at stars; jungle mein 2 Hunting aur 3 Snarling. Step 1 zoo mein stanza 1 ko highlight karta hai. Step 2 jungle mein stanzas 2 aur 3 ko highlight karta hai. Step 3 wapas zoo mein stanza 4 ko highlight karta hai. Step 4 stanza 5 ko highlight karta hai, aur cage ke upar do stars dikhte hain.

2.8.1 Stanza by stanza

Stanza 1 (cage). Pehli tasveer ek shaandaar jaanwar ki hai jo ek chhoti si jagah mein band hai. Tiger ki har cheez khoobsurti aur taakat dikhati hai, phir bhi woh bas chakkar laga sakta hai. Mukhya contrast uski bina aawaaz ki chaal aur uske andar badhte gusse ke beech hai: cage ne use paaltu nahi banaya, bas chup kara diya hai.

Stanza 2 (jungle: shikaar). Should be words ke saath poet hume zoo se bahar tiger ke asli ghar mein le jaata hai. Ab hum use ek shikaari ke roop mein dekhte hain: chhupa hua, sabr wala aur apne aas-paas ke maahaul mein bilkul fit, aur shikaar paas hi hai. Is stanza ki har image chupke se chalne aur instinct ke baare mein hai.

Stanza 3 (jungle: taakat). Ab hum tiger ki khoonkhaari dekhte hain. Jungle mein, jungle ke paas rehne wale log usse darte. Poet khatre ki taareef nahi kar raha; woh chahta hai ki hum tiger ka asli, jungli nature dekhein, wahi cheez jo zoo ne usse chheen li hai. Aakhir ka exclamation mark wahi energy dikhata hai.

Stanza 4 (wapas cage mein). But hume jhatke se wapas sachchaai mein le aata hai. Cage ko ek jail ke cell ki tarah describe kiya gaya hai, sakht aur bejaan, aur stanzas 2 aur 3 mein dikhi saari taakat ab bekaar hai. Uska visitors ki taraf na dekhna nafrat, bori ya niraasha, kuch bhi samjha ja sakta hai; jo bhi ho, woh unke liye tamasha nahi karega.

Stanza 5 (zoo mein raat). Jab bheed chali jaati hai, to sirf zoo ki rakhwaali karne walon ki aawaazein aati hain: raat par bhi pehra hai. Tiger upar dekhta hai. Uski chamakti aankhein aur chamakte stars ek doosre ka aaina hain, lekin stars khule aasmaan mein azaad hain aur woh nahi. Poem chaahat ki is chup, udaas tasveer par khatam hoti hai.

2.8.2 Poetic devices, mood aur tone

Rhyme schemeabcb: lines 2 aur 4 rhyme karti hain, kuch sirf thodi-siek seedhi, sthir beat, chakkar lagane jaisi

Quiet aur brilliant ko dohraaya kyun? Stanza 1 mein dohraaya gaya quiet pehle tiger ke naram kadmon ko describe karta hai aur phir uske gusse ko. Dono chamakte hain aur dono nature ke hain, lekin sirf stars azaad hain. Yeh repetition chaahat ki is aakhri tasveer ko hamare mann mein bitha deta hai.

Mood aur tone. Mood udaas aur bechain hai. Tone tiger ke prati hamdardi wala hai aur jungli jaanwaron ko cage mein rakhne ki chupchaap aalochana karta hai. Poet kabhi nahi batata ki hum kya sochein; woh do tasveerein saath rakh deta hai aur contrast ko bolne deta hai.

Theme aur message. Poem freedom aur qaid ke baare mein hai. Ek jungli jaanwar ki jagah uska natural ghar hai, aur cage woh sab khatam kar deta hai jo use jungli banata hai. Mandela ke extract ke saath padhne par yeh yaad dilati hai ki freedom ki chaahat sirf insaanon ki nahi hoti.

Board practice: long answers (100–120 words): answers ke saath

  1. Long answerMedium

Extract ke aadhaar par Nelson Mandela ka character sketch likho.

    Solution dikhao

Nelson Mandela emerges as a great leader and a deeply human man. He is courageous: he fought apartheid for decades and endured years in prison, defining courage as conquering fear. He is patriotic, calling his people the nation's true wealth. He is forgiving, welcoming former enemies such as de Klerk and the generals into the new nation without bitterness. He is humble, describing himself as merely the sum of the patriots before him. He is also selfless, having sacrificed home and family for his people. Above all he is wise: he understands that hatred is learnt and that freedom is indivisible. He is a model of moral strength.

Examiner yeh key points dhoondhta hai:

    • four or more qualities
    • evidence from the text for each
    • a clear opening and conclusion
    • about 120 words
  2. Long answerHard

‘Freedom is indivisible.’ Samjhao ki Mandela is vishwaas tak kaise pahunche, aur woh kyun sochte the ki oppressor ko bhi azaad karna zaroori hai.

    Solution dikhao

Mandela's idea of freedom grew in stages. As a boy he felt free, and as a student he wanted small freedoms for himself. In Johannesburg he wanted to earn, marry and live lawfully. Then he saw that everyone who looked like him was equally unfree, so he joined the ANC and fought for his people. Finally he understood that freedom cannot be divided: chains on one person are chains on all. Even the oppressor is unfree, because whoever takes away another's freedom is a prisoner of hatred and prejudice. Since both lose their humanity, both must be liberated. This generous idea explains why he sought reconciliation, not revenge, in 1994.

Examiner yeh key points dhoondhta hai:

    • stages of his understanding
    • meaning of ‘indivisible’
    • the oppressor as prisoner of hatred
    • conclusion
  3. Long answerHard

Mandela ko apni family ki seva aur apne logon ki seva mein se ek chunna pada. Kya unki choice sahi thi? Reasons ke saath apni opinion do.

    Solution dikhao

I believe Mandela's choice was painful but right. In a fair society he could have served both family and nation, but apartheid made that impossible: anyone who fought for his people was forced into hiding or prison. His family paid a heavy price, losing a son, brother, husband and father. Yet his sacrifice helped free millions of families, including, in time, his own. As he says, he could not enjoy limited freedoms while his people were in chains. Personal duties matter, but when injustice is so vast, serving the larger family of the nation can be the greater duty. History has proved his sacrifice worthwhile.

Examiner yeh key points dhoondhta hai:

    • clear opinion
    • twin obligations explained
    • cost and gain weighed
    • link to the text
  4. Long answerMedium

‘A Tiger in the Zoo’ do duniyaon ka contrast karti hai. Is contrast ko describe karo aur batao ki tumhari raay mein zoos hone chahiye ya nahi.

    Solution dikhao

Leslie Norris contrasts the tiger's cramped life in the zoo with his free life in the wild. In the zoo he silently paces a concrete cell, his power going to waste, ignoring visitors and staring at the stars at night. In the wild he would lurk in shadows, hunt deer by a water hole and snarl at the edge of a village. Devices such as the oxymoron ‘quiet rage’ and the repeated ‘brilliant’ deepen the contrast. In my view, zoos should keep only animals that cannot survive in the wild. Protecting forests and reserves is a kinder way to save tigers.

Examiner yeh key points dhoondhta hai:

    • zoo details
    • wild details
    • one or two devices
    • a reasoned opinion
