First Flight ka Chapter 3 chaar pieces ko saath laata hai: flying ke baare mein do short stories, “His First Flight” aur “The Black Aeroplane”, aur do poems, “How to Tell Wild Animals” aur “The Ball Poem”. Pehle har piece apni NCERT book mein padho. Phir yeh page tumhe uske through le chalta hai: kya hota hai, characters kaun hain, iska matlab kya hai, language aur writing tasks, aur end mein model answers ke saath board-style questions.

3.1 Padhne se pehle

Aeroplanes se bahut pehle, log birds ko dekhte the aur chahte the ki unke peeche ud sakein. Uttarayan par Ahmedabad ka aasmaan socho, kites se bhara hua, ya plane ke andar ki khamoshi jab woh runway se upar uthta hai. Udna humein thrill deta hai, lekin har first flight shak ke ek pal se shuru hoti hai.

Dono stories usi pal ko pakadti hain. Ek young seagull apne cliff ledge ko chhodne ko taiyaar nahi, aur raat mein akela ek pilot storm mein ghus jaata hai aur apna har bharose wala instrument kho deta hai. Dekho ki dono darr se safety tak kaise pahunchte hain, aur kaun, ya kya, unki madad karta hai.

3.2 His First Flight

Pehli story ek young seagull ko sea cliff par lagbhag dedh din tak follow karti hai. Yeh third person mein kahi gayi hai, lekin hum young bird ke dimaag ke andar hi rehte hain. Hum uska darr, uski bhookh aur aakhir mein uski khushi share karte hain.

3.2.1 Story paanch scenes mein

1. Peeche chhoot gaya. Young seagull ke brothers aur sister family ledge se pehle hi ud chuke hain. Woh nahi uda. Yeh taakat ka sawaal nahi hai: uske siblings, jinke sabke wings usse chhote the, chhalaang laga chuke the.

2. Dekhte rehne ka din. Poore din woh ek flying school ko dekhta rehta hai jismein judne se use darr lagta hai. Uske siblings ko neeche udne aur fishing ke lessons milte hain, aur ek brother to apni pehli machhli bhi pakad leta hai jabki parents shor macha kar celebrate karte hain. Agli subah tak poori family saamne wali cliff ke ek plateau par baith kar ledge par baithe darpok ka mazaak udaati hai.

3. Bhookh. Usi subah thodi der baad, bhookh sabse badi problem ban jaati hai. Pichhli shaam se usne kuch nahi khaaya, aur dhoop us par tez pad rahi hai. Ek taang par oonghne ka uska natak, yeh dikhane ke liye ki use parwaah nahi, kisi ka dhyaan nahi kheenchta. Sirf uski maa use dekh rahi hai, jab woh gap ke us paar ek machhli ko noch rahi hai. Yeh nazaara sehna mushkil hai. Woh khaane ke liye chillata hai, maa uska mazaak udaati hai, woh phir se gidgidata hai, aur aakhir mein lagta hai ki maa maan gayi: woh machhli utha kar udti hui aati hai.

4. Trick aur girna. Yeh turning point hai, aur yeh jaan-boojh kar ki gayi trick hai. Uski maa ledge se thoda pehle hawa mein ruk jaati hai, machhli uski chonch ko lagbhag chhoo rahi hai. Pehle hairaan, phir bechain, woh machhli par jhapatta hai aur khaali hawa mein gir padta hai. Jis darr se woh dar raha tha woh mushkil se ek minute rehta hai, kyunki uske shareer ko pata hai ki kya karna hai: instinct se wings khul jaate hain aur hawa use sambhaal leti hai. Jaldi hi woh upar chadh raha hai, uski family excited awaazon ke saath uske chaaron taraf chakkar laga rahi hai, aur dive karne aur mudne ke maze mein darr bhool jaata hai.

5. ‘Green floor’. Uska aakhri lesson mazedaar hai. Aage paani par apni family ko aaraam karte dekh kar, woh green sea ko pakki zameen samajh leta hai aur us par khade hone ki koshish karta hai. Uske pair doob jaate hain, woh cheekhta hai aur pankh phadphadata hai, lekin uski taakat khatam ho chuki hai. Phir uska shareer sambhal jaata hai aur woh tairne lagta hai. Uski family tareef aur dog-fish ke tukdon ke saath use gher leti hai. Woh ud chuka hai, aur use khaana mil gaya hai.

4/5Woh jhapatta hai, girta hai, aur uske wings khul jaate hain: woh ud raha hai.

Fig. 3.1Young seagull ko uske ledge se sea tak follow karo.

Left mein ek sea cliff hai jismein ek patla ledge hai jahan young seagull baitha hai; right mein ek doosri cliff hai jiska upar flat plateau hai, aur neeche sea hai. Step 1 mein woh ledge par akela dikhta hai. Step 2 mein family ke teen members dono cliffs ke beech ke gap ke upar udte dikhte hain. Step 3 mein uski maa machhli ke saath ledge ke thoda aage hawa mein ruki hai, lagbhag uski pahunch mein. Step 4 mein woh ledge se bahar hawa mein hai, wings faile hue, aur ek dashed line uske girne ko dikhati hai. Step 5 mein woh sea par tair raha hai aur family ke do members uske paas hain.

3.2.2 Characters aur setting

Setting: patle ledges wali ek sea cliff, saamne wali cliff par ek plateau aur neeche khula sea, lagbhag dedh din tak. Point of view: third person, lekin narrator sirf young gull ke thoughts aur feelings share karta hai, isliye hum bhi uske saath gehraai se darte hain.

Compare

Story mein kaun kaun hai

Young seagull

  • Darpok aur khud par shak karne wala, jabki uske wings mazboot hain
  • Parwaah na karne ka natak karke apni izzat bachaane ki koshish karta hai
  • Aakhir mein bhookh use aage dhakelti hai, himmat nahi
  • Ek minute ke andar darr se chakkar dene wali khushi tak badal jaata hai

Uski maa

  • Jab baaki sab use ignore karte hain, tab bhi woh use dekhti hai
  • Khaane ko bait ki tarah use karti hai aur jaan-boojh kar pahunch se thoda door ruk jaati hai
  • Sakht lekin pyaar karne wali: jab woh udta hai to sabse pehle wahi awaaz deti hui uske paas se jhapat kar guzarti hai

Father aur siblings

  • Father daantta aur dhamkaata hai, phir cheer karte hue uske upar udta hai
  • Siblings pehle udte hain aur chhedne mein shaamil ho jaate hain
  • End mein sab uski tareef karte hain aur use khilaate hain

3.2.3 Khaas moments ka matlab

  • Chhote wings, phir bhi ude. Yeh detail saabit karti hai ki problem uske dimaag mein hai. Darr use ledge par rokta hai, taakat ki kami nahi.
  • Oonghne ka natak. Woh khaana aur attention chahta hai, bina yeh maane ki use darr lagta hai. Koi jawaab nahi deta, jo dikhata hai ki family ne use manaana band karne ka faisla kar liya hai.
  • Mazaak udaati awaaz. Uski maa uski bheekh ka jawaab ek chidhaane wale “Gaw-col-ah” se deti hai. Woh uske darr ka inaam dene se mana kar deti hai.
  • Hawa mein rukna. Maa ka rukna hi turning point hai. Use pata hai ki bhookh use daant se kahin zyada aage le jaayegi, isliye woh use khaane tak khud pahunchne par majboor karti hai.
  • Darr ka ek minute. Ek baar hawa mein aane ke baad darr bas ek pal rehta hai aur instinct sambhaal leti hai. Jis cheez se woh darta tha, woh natural nikalti hai.
  • ‘Green floor’. Sea ko pakki zameen samajhna funny hai, lekin yeh bhi dikhata hai ki use abhi bahut kuch seekhna hai. Family ki tareef aur khaana use bade hone ki zindagi mein welcome karte hain.

3.2.4 Themes aur message

  • Darr dimaag mein rehta hai. Gull ke paas wings hain; kami hai to bas bharose ki. Jaise hi use hawa mein jaane par majboor kiya jaata hai, darr gaayab ho jaata hai.
  • Zaroorat humein aage badhaati hai. Jo kaam dhamkiyan aur taane nahi kar paaye, woh bhookh kar deti hai.
  • Tough love. Parents ki daant aur maa ki trick sakht lagti hai, lekin yeh care se aati hai: jo seagull ud nahi sakta, woh zinda nahi reh sakta.
  • Karke seekhna.

Practice 3.3: Text ke baare mein socho: answers ke saath

  1. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text (I) Q1

Samjhao ki young seagull ko uske ledge par kis cheez ne roke rakha. Uske brothers aur sister ko evidence ki tarah use karke decide karo ki uski problem ability thi ya temperament, aur iski tulna ek toddler ke pehle kadmon se karo.

    Solution dikhao

He feared the huge drop to the sea and was sure his wings would not hold him up.

It was temperament, not ability: his siblings had shorter wings and still flew. Temperament varies, and some creatures are simply shyer.

A toddler faces the same test. The legs are ready, but balance and nerve take time, and falls are part of learning.

  2. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text (I) Q2

Apni maa ko khaate dekh kar young gull lagbhag paagal ho jaata hai. Isse uski haalat ke baare mein kya pata chalta hai, aur asal mein kis cheez ne use udaaya?

    Solution dikhao

He had gone without food since the evening before, so he was desperate with hunger.

His mother used that hunger. She flew towards him with the fish and stopped just out of reach. He lunged, fell off the ledge, and his wings opened by instinct. Hunger overcame fear where threats had failed.

  3. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text (I) Q3

Parents pehle apne bete ko daantte aur dhamkaate hain, aur end mein use awaaz dekar aur haath hila kar apne paas bulaate hain. Woh dono tareeke kyun use karte hain? Kya yeh cruelty hai ya care?

    Solution dikhao

They knew he could fly, and that a gull must fly to find food and survive.

Threats and mockery were meant to shame him into trying. When he was finally in the air, calling and coaxing guided him and built his confidence.

It is care, not cruelty: tough love that aims at his independence.

  4. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text (I) Q4

Pair work: koi aisa time batao jab kisi bade ne tumhe kuch aisa try karne ke liye push kiya jisse tumhe darr lagta tha. Unhone kya kiya, aur kya isse madad mili?

    Solution dikhao

Model: At eleven, I refused to jump into the deep end of the pool. My uncle did not argue. He stood in the water, held out his arms and counted to three every few minutes. On the fifth count I jumped. I swallowed water, but I came up laughing, and I swam the length by the end of the week.

Tumhare apne answer mein yeh hona chahiye ki tumhe kis cheez se darr tha, bade ne kya kiya aur baad mein tumhe kaisa laga.

  5. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text (I) Q5

Hum maan kar chalte hain ki bird to udega hi. Kya Q4 wali tumhari apni koshish fail ho sakti thi? Samjhao ki phir bhi woh try karne laayak kyun thi.

    Solution dikhao

Success was not guaranteed. I could have panicked and needed rescuing.

Trying mattered anyway. Courage grows only through action, and even a failed attempt shows what to fix next time. The gull’s success also looks certain only afterwards: on the ledge it felt impossible to him.

3.3.1 Speaking: ek group presentation

NCERT groups se kehta hai ki flight ya travel se jude ek topic par research karke present karo: aeroplanes kaise develop hue, motorcars kaise develop hui, birds aur unke wingspans, ya migratory birds ke routes. Ek achhi group talk plan ki jaati hai, padh kar sunaayi nahi jaati.

  1. Kaam baanto. Ek researcher, visuals ke liye ek person, do ya teen speakers aur ek timekeeper chuno.
  2. Hook se shuru karo: koi hairaan karne wala fact ya class se ek question.
  3. Sirf teen main points rakho, inventions ke liye time ke order mein, ya birds ke liye sabse bade se sabse chhote tak.
  4. Ek saaf visual dikhao: ek timeline, migration route ka map ya scale par bani drawing.
  5. Ek sentence ke takeaway ke saath khatam karo, phir do questions ke liye invite karo.
  6. Time ke hisaab se rehearse karo (chaar se paanch minute). Class ki taraf dekho aur cue cards par sirf nazar daalo, poore sentences nahi.
Timeline

Wright Flyer se jumbo jet tak

  1. 1903

    The Wright Flyer

Orville aur Wilbur Wright USA ke Kitty Hawk mein pehli powered, controlled aeroplane flight karte hain.

  2. 1919

    Atlantic ke paar

Alcock aur Brown Newfoundland se Ireland tak bina ruke udte hain.

  3. 1932

    India mein Airmail

    J. R. D. Tata ek chhote Puss Moth mein Karachi se Bombay tak mail lekar udte hain; unki airline baad mein Air India banti hai.

  4. 1935

    The DC-3

Douglas DC-3 pehli baar udta hai. Britain ki air force ne iske military version ko Dakota kaha, yahi woh type ka plane hai jo ‘The Black Aeroplane’ mein narrator udaata hai.

  5. 1949

    Pehla jet airliner

de Havilland Comet apni pehli flight karta hai; passenger service 1952 mein shuru hoti hai.

  6. 1969

    Jumbo aur supersonic

Boeing 747 aur supersonic Concorde dono pehli baar udte hain.

  • Birds aur unka wingspan: southern oceans ke wandering albatross ke wings kisi bhi zinda bird se zyada chaude hote hain; record bird ek tip se doosre tip tak lagbhag 3.6 m naapa gaya tha.
  • Migratory birds: har October aur November mein Amur falcons ke bade-bade jhund Nagaland ke Doyang reservoir ke paas aaraam karte hain. Woh eastern Asia aur southern Africa ke beech lagbhag 22,000 km tak ki saalana journey par hote hain, aur Arabian Sea paar karte hain.
  • Motorcars: 1886 ki Karl Benz ki motor car se shuru karo, phir Ford ke Model T (1908) par aao, jise assembly lines ne sasta banaya, phir India ki Maruti 800 (1983) aur aaj ki electric cars tak.

3.3.2 Writing: ek humorous composition

Writing task kehta hai ki tum humour ke saath likho ki tumne koi skill seekhna kaise shuru kiya. Yahan composition lagbhag 150–200 words ki ek chhoti personal narrative hai jiska ek title hota hai. Yeh khud ke baare mein ek story jaisi padhi jaati hai, past tense mein.

Humour imaandaar details se aur khud par kiye gaye exaggeration se aata hai, kabhi doosron par nahi. Struggle ko build karo, ek disaster ko baaki sab se bada rakho, phir ek chhoti jeet aur ek halke-phulke lesson ke saath khatam karo. Fig. 3.2 plan dikhata hai.

5/5Khud par haste hue ek halke lesson ke saath khatam karo.

Fig. 3.2Paanch moves mein ek funny composition plan karo.

Paanch numbered boxes ka ek vertical plan, jo ek line se jude hain, aur har box ke right mein ek structure word hai. Step 1 mein box 1 jalta hai, Title plus funny hook, yaani beginning. Step 2 mein box 2 judta hai, Pehli tries fail, yaani build-up. Step 3 mein box 3 judta hai, Bada comic disaster, yaani climax. Step 4 mein box 4 judta hai, Ek chhoti jeet, yaani turn. Step 5 mein paanchon boxes dikhte hain, aur end mein box 5 hai, Kya seekha, haste hue, yaani ending.

Practice 3.3: Writing: answers ke saath

  1. Long answerMediumNCERT Writing (His First Flight)

Gol rotis banane ki apni pehli koshishon par, ya kisi aur roz ki skill jaise skating, saree pehnana ya googly daalna, par 150–180 words ka ek humorous composition likho.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: The Map of India on My Tawa

Last summer my grandmother announced that anyone who eats rotis should be able to make one. I was handed a rolling pin as if it were a sword.

My first roti came out shaped like Sri Lanka. The second looked like a map of India, Kashmir included. Nani said the third resembled a tired starfish. Flour covered the counter, the floor and, somehow, my left ear.

Then came the disaster. I flipped a roti off the tawa so enthusiastically that it sailed across the kitchen and landed on our cat, who has not forgiven me.

By the end of the week, one roti puffed up into a perfect golden balloon. I carried it to the table like a trophy, and everyone clapped.

I still cannot make two round rotis in a row. But I learnt that every expert was once a beginner covered in flour, and that laughing at yourself makes the next try easier.

Key points: a title; past tense; first person; comic exaggeration; one big disaster; a small win; a closing lesson; within the word limit.

Quick check
3 mein se 1
Swimming seekhne par ek humorous composition ke liye kaun si opening line sabse sahi hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) My swimming career began with me sinking, loudly.

Yeh personal hai, comic hai aur story set karti hai. Baaki lines seedhe-saade statements hain jo essay ke liye theek hain, funny narrative ke liye nahi.

3.4 The Black Aeroplane

Doosri story khud pilot sunaata hai, jo ek first-person narrator hai. Kyunki hum sirf wahi dekhte hain jo woh dekhta hai, story khatam hone par hum bhi utne hi hairaan hote hain jitna woh.

3.4.1 Story chhe moments mein

1. Ghar ki aasaan flight. Ek shaant raat socho: bina baadal ka aasmaan, ugta hua chaand aur ek purane Dakota mein akela ek aadmi, jo France paar karke England wapas ja raha hai. Subah ke shuruaati ghante hain aur uska dhyaan apni family aur apni chhuttiyon par hai. Paris ke paas radio par controllers use ek naya course dete hain. Woh mudta hai, aur apne aakhri fuel tank par bhi switch karta hai, ek detail jo aage kaam aati hai.

2. Storm ke saamne ek choice. Paris se kuch aage storm clouds ki ek deewar saamne uthti hai, kaali aur thos jaisi dikhti hui. Writer unki tulna kaale pahaadon se karta hai, ek vivid simile. Unke upar se jaana namumkin hai, aur ghoom kar jaane mein woh fuel lagega jo uske paas nahi hai. Safe choice hai Paris wapas mudna. Lekin woh ghar pahunchna chahta hai, aur ek bade English breakfast ke sapne dekh raha hai. Isliye woh risk leta hai (“I’ll take the risk”) aur seedha andar ud jaata hai.

3. Andhere mein bhatka hua. Baadal ke andar use kuch bhi nahi dikhta. Aircraft idhar-udhar uchhalta hai, compass bekaar mein ghoomta hai, baaki instruments band ho jaate hain aur radio chup ho jaata hai. Yeh jaanne ka koi tareeka nahi ki woh kahan hai, isliye woh poori tarah bhatak chuka hai.

4. Storm mein ek ajnabi. Phir use baadal mein apne bagal mein ek aur aeroplane dikhta hai. Usmein koi lights nahi hain, phir bhi woh uske pilot ko apni taraf dekhte aur aage aane ka ishaara karte dekh sakta hai. Bahut khush hokar woh bina sawaal kiye maan jaata hai, aur ajnabi use lagbhag aadhe ghante tak north ki taraf le jaata hai.

5. Fuel khatam, roshni mein. Uska aakhri tank lagbhag khaali hai, bas kuch minute ki flying bachi hai, jab guide neeche utarna shuru karta hai. Narrator uske peeche neeche aata hai aur baadal se nikal kar ek runway ki lights ki do lines ke upar pahunchta hai. Woh safely land karta hai. Lekin jab woh apne rescuer ko dhoondne ke liye idhar-udhar dekhta hai, aasmaan khaali hai.

6. Ek sawaal jiska jawaab nahi. Woh control centre jaata hai yeh pata karne ki woh kahan land hua hai aur doosre pilot ko thank you kehne. Duty par baithi aurat use ajeeb nazar se dekhti hai aur hans deti hai: jahan tak use pata hai, us storm mein bahar sirf uska hi aircraft tha. Story narrator ke is sawaal ke saath khatam hoti hai ki use ghar tak kaun guide karke laaya hoga.

5/6Bina lights ka ek plane aata hai aur use le chalta hai jabki uska fuel kam hota ja raha hai.

Fig. 3.3Narrator ka route, ek shaant raat se ek rahasyamay rescue tak (ek sketch, scale par nahi).

Ek simple map jismein north upar hai. Step 1 mein narrator ka aeroplane chaand ke neeche Paris ke thoda north mein dikhta hai. Step 2 mein ek curved arrow dikhta hai jab woh naye course par mudta hai aur apne aakhri fuel tank par switch karta hai. Step 3 mein uske aage storm clouds ki ek chaudi patti judti hai. Step 4 mein uska plane baadalon ke andar hai aur ek compass dial par question mark laga hai, kyunki uske instruments band ho chuke hain. Step 5 mein ek doosra aeroplane dashed outline mein judta hai, jis par no lights likha hai, jo guide ki tarah aage ud raha hai. Step 6 mein woh lamps ki do lines se roshan ek runway par hai; guide plane gaayab ho chuka hai.

3.4.2 Characters

Compare

Story ke log

Narrator (pilot)

  • Skilled lekin be-sabr: breakfast tak ghar pahunchne ke liye storm ka risk leta hai
  • Apne darr aur apni bewakoofi bhari choice ke baare mein imaandaar
  • Jab woh bebas hai, to ajnabi par poora bharosa karta hai
  • Shukraguzaar: land karte hi uski pehli ichha thank you kehne ki hoti hai

Control centre wali aurat

  • Practical aur apne facts par pakki
  • Apne radar par bharosa karti hai, jismein ek hi aircraft dikha
  • Uski ajeeb nazar aur hansi twist banaati hai

Black aeroplane ka pilot

  • Kabhi bolta nahi; sirf ishaaron se guide karta hai
  • Bina lights ke udta hai aur radar par koi nishaan nahi chhodta
  • Use safety tak le jaata hai, phir gaayab ho jaata hai

3.4.3 Khaas moments ka matlab

  • Faisla. Woh teen options tolta hai: storm ke upar se (namumkin), uske aas-paas se (fuel kaafi nahi) aur Paris wapas (safe). Woh ek chautha chunta hai, seedha andar udna, ek chhote se aaraam ke liye. Risk kitna bada hai aur wajah kitni chhoti, yahi farak choice ko laaparwaah banaata hai.
  • Sab kuch fail. Compass, radio aur instruments ek saath band ho jaate hain. Writer pilot ka har bharose wala tool chheen leta hai, isliye rescue ek miracle jaisa lagta hai.
  • Peeche aane ka ishaara. Ajnabi kabhi bolta nahi, phir bhi uska haath hilaana saaf hai. Pilot ek bachche ki tarah maan leta hai jo apne parent ke peeche chalta hai, jo dikhata hai ki darr ne use kitna jhuka diya hai.
  • Fuel khatam hota hua. Theek jab aakhri tank lagbhag khaali hai, guide use neeche le aata hai. Yeh timing tension badhaati hai aur ishaara karti hai ki madad usi ke liye thi.
  • Dakota chhod kar khushi. Purane aircraft se door jaate hue, woh pakki zameen par hone se raahat mehsoos karta hai, aur shaayad yeh soch kar hila hua hai ki woh disaster ke kitne kareeb tha.
  • Radar. Aurat ke words ek adventure ko mystery bana dete hain: agar koi aur plane ud hi nahi raha tha, to use guide kisne kiya?

3.4.4 Black aeroplane kisne udaaya?

Story ka open ending hai. Writer clues deta hai par jawaab nahi, aur NCERT tumhe khud decide karne ko kehta hai ki plane sach mein wahan tha ya nahi. Exam mein koi bhi reading chalegi agar tum use story ki details se support karo.

Compare

Ending ko padhne ke teen tareeke

Ek asli lekin bhoot jaisa guide

  • Usne pilot ka chehra aur uska haath hilaana dekha
  • Guide ko paas ke ek airport ka raasta pata tha
  • Lekin: lights nahi, radar par nishaan nahi, aur woh gaayab ho gaya

Uska apna dimaag

  • Raat mein ghanton akele rehna, phir panic, dimaag ko cheezein dikha sakta hai
  • Shaayad darr ne mudne aur neeche utarne ki uski apni instinct ko tez kar diya
  • Lekin: band instruments ke saath use runway kaise mila?

Kisi aur duniya se madad

  • Madad theek tab aayi jab saari ummeed khatam ho chuki thi
  • Kai readers ismein ek guardian angel, ya kisi pilot ka bhoot dekhte hain
  • Aakhri sawaal faith ke liye jagah chhodte hain

Themes. Mystery ke peeche kuch saaf ideas hain. Chhote se aaraam ke liye liya gaya laaparwaah faisla bahut mehenga pad sakta hai. Jab hum poori tarah bebas hote hain, to madad wahan se aa sakti hai jahan se hum sabse kam ummeed karte hain. Aur kuch experiences samjhaaye nahi ja sakte, sirf sunaaye ja sakte hain. Pehli story se contrast dekho: seagull ko uski family darr se bahar dhakelti hai, jabki pilot ko ek ajnabi khatre se bahar le jaata hai.

Narrator storm clouds ke aas-paas se kyun nahi udta?
Answer dekho

Answer (B) Unke aas-paas jaane ke liye uske paas bahut kam fuel bacha tha.

Woh pehle hi apne aakhri tank par tha, isliye north ya south ki taraf lamba ghumaav namumkin tha. Uska compass baadalon mein ghusne ke baad hi fail hua.

Practice 3.5: Text ke baare mein socho: answers ke saath

  1. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text (II) Q1

Storm se theek pehle narrator jua khelne ka faisla karta hai. Daav par kya tha, aur usne khatra kyun maana?

    Solution dikhao

He risked his life: flying an old plane into a huge storm, on his last fuel tank, unable to go over or round it.

He accepted the danger because he wanted to get home to his family and holiday, and to a big breakfast. Turning back to Paris meant delay, and an easy flight so far had made him confident.

  2. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text (II) Q2

Baadalon ke andar pahunchne ke baad narrator, uske plane aur uske instruments ke saath kya hua?

    Solution dikhao

Darkness swallowed him, so he could see nothing beyond the cockpit, and the old plane was thrown about violently.

His compass spun uselessly, every other instrument stopped working and the radio fell silent. He was lost and frightened until the strange plane appeared.

  3. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text (II) Q3

Land karne ke baad narrator apne purane aeroplane se door jaakar khush hai. Use aisa kyun lag sakta hai?

    Solution dikhao

The old Dakota had nearly cost him his life: its instruments and radio had failed and its fuel had almost run out.

He was relieved to be on solid ground and in no hurry to climb back in. The phrase also hints that he regrets his risky choice.

  4. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text (II) Q4

Jab narrator doosre pilot ke baare mein poochhta hai, to duty par baithi aurat use ghoorti hai aur hans deti hai. Kyun?

    Solution dikhao

He asked about the pilot of another aeroplane. But no other plane was flying in that storm, and her radar showed only his.

His question made no sense to her, so she looked at him oddly and laughed, perhaps thinking he was confused or joking.

  5. Long answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Text (II) Q5

Groups mein discuss karo: narrator ko safely neeche kaun, ya kya, laaya? Apni raay ke liye story se kam se kam do details do.

    Solution dikhao

Model view: I think it was something beyond explanation, such as a guardian spirit.

    • The plane had no lights, yet he saw the pilot’s face and wave.
    • It led him to an airport just as his fuel ran out.
    • It vanished after he landed, and radar never showed it.

Another group could argue that his own instinct, sharpened by fear, guided him. Any view earns marks if it is backed by events from the story.

3.6 Language ke baare mein socho

Doosri story ke baad wala language section dekhta hai ki ek word kaise kai meanings le ja sakta hai, aur English flying ke baare mein kitne alag-alag tareekon se baat karti hai.

3.6.1 Ek word, kai meanings: black

Story mein black do tareekon se kaam karta hai. Kabhi yeh ek colour ka naam hai, jaise jab storm clouds kaale pahaadon jaise dikhte hain. Kabhi iska matlab hai bilkul roshni ke bina: baadal ke andar pilot ko kuch nahi dikhta, aur ajeeb plane bina kisi light ke udta hai. Word wahi hai; context batata hai ki kaun sa meaning hai.

Story ke bahar black ke aur bhi bahut meanings hain, kuch literal aur kuch idiomatic. Fig. 3.4 unhe groups mein dikhata hai, aur table har ek ka example deta hai.

4/4Black-market trade illegal hota hai; a black deed bura kaam hota hai.

Fig. 3.4Ek word, aath meanings: context decide karta hai.

Word black beech mein ek dark circle mein hai, aur dono taraf meaning boxes usse jude hain. Step 1 mein story ke do meanings dikhte hain: sabse kaala, jaise black clouds, aur andhera, jaise pitch-black. Step 2 mein roz ke meanings judte hain: bina doodh, jaise black coffee, aur bada ganda, jaise black palms. Step 3 mein feelings judti hain: gussa, jaise a black look, aur udaas, jaise a black mood. Step 4 mein galat kaam judte hain: illegal, jaise black market, aur bura, dusht, jaise a black deed.

3.6.2 Do tarah ka udna, aur fly wale phrases

Dekho ki dono stories mein verb fly kaise kaam karta hai. Jab narrator apna Dakota fly karta hai, woh operator hai: woh ek machine chalaata hai, jaise drone pilot karta hai. Jab young gull ko fly karne mein darr lagta hai, to safar woh khud kar raha hai, aur uske apne wings ko use le jaana hai. Isliye fly ka matlab ho sakta hai hawa se safar karna (birds, insects, passengers) ya hawa mein udti kisi cheez ko chalaana (pilots, drone operators, kite udaane wale).

Fly kai phrases aur idioms mein bhi aata hai jinka matlab tum alag-alag words se guess nahi kar sakte. Inhe poore units ki tarah seekho.

3.6.3 Hawa mein chalne ke words

NCERT bees verbs ki list deta hai aur kehta hai ki unmein se woh chuno jinka matlab fly ke kareeb hai. Test simple hai: kya koi bird ya insect yeh hawa mein kar sakta hai? Har flight verb ek aisa shade of meaning bhi jodta hai jo simple fly mein nahi hota.

  • soar: upar uthna, aksar bina mehnat ke. A black kite soared above the rooftops.
  • glide: bina pankh hilaaye smoothly aage badhna. The eagle glided down the valley.
  • hover: hawa mein ek hi jagah ruke rehna. A kingfisher hovered over the pond, then dived.
  • swoop: achaanak neeche jhapatna, aksar kuch pakadne ke liye. A crow swooped and snatched my vada.
  • flutter: pankh jaldi-jaldi aur halke se phadphadaana. A sparrow fluttered at the window.
  • flit: ek jagah se doosri jagah jaldi aur halke se udna. Sunbirds flitted between the hibiscus flowers.
  • dart: achaanak aur tez chalna. A dragonfly darted across the stream.
  • skim: kisi surface ke theek upar udna. Swallows skimmed the lake for insects.
  • flap: pankh upar-neeche karna. The pigeon flapped hard and took off.

Kuch verbs sirf kuch contexts mein fit hote hain. Sail aur float hawa mein smooth movement ko describe kar sakte hain (boundary ke upar se jaata six), jabki ascend aur descend ka matlab bas upar jaana aur neeche jaana hai. Paddle, sink aur crawl jaise verbs ka udne se koi lena-dena nahi. Fig. 3.5 dikhata hai ki har main verb kaun sa path banata hai.

1/6Soar: aasaani se upar chadhna, aksar gol chakkar mein.

Fig. 3.5Har flight verb ek alag path banata hai.

Paani ki ek patti ke upar aasmaan mein chhe dashed flight paths, har ek ek chhoti bird shape par khatam hota hai; har step mein ek path bold banta hai aur uska matlab upar dikhta hai. Step 1, soar: left mein ek path spiral bana kar upar jaata hai. Step 2, glide: ek lambi, halki dhalaan. Step 3, hover: ek jagah ruki bird ke chaaron taraf ek dashed ring. Step 4, swoop: paani ki taraf ek teekha dive aur wapas upar. Step 5, skim: paani ke theek upar ek seedha path. Step 6, flutter: jaldi pankh maarne ka ek chhota zigzag.

  1. Long answerMediumNCERT Writing (The Black Aeroplane)

Tum evening class se akele ghar laut rahe the jab achaanak aaye thunderstorm ne tumhe raaste ki ek dukaan mein rukne par majboor kar diya. Is experience ko 120–150 words ke paragraph mein narrate karo.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: Last July, I was walking home from my evening maths class when the sky over our town turned the colour of ink. At first I hurried, hoping to beat the rain. Suddenly a crack of thunder made me jump, and fat drops began to hammer the road. I dashed into a small chemist’s shop, and the owner let me wait inside. Lightning lit up the empty street every few seconds, and the shutters rattled so loudly that I could hardly hear myself think. The air smelt of wet dust. My phone had no signal, so I counted the seconds between each flash and its thunder to see if the storm was moving away. At last the rain eased, and my father appeared with an umbrella. I learnt that a storm is far less frightening once you stay calm and wait.

Key points: clear topic sentence; past tense; time words; at least two senses; feelings; a closing thought; 120–150 words.

3.8 How to Tell Wild Animals

Pehli poem poori tarah mazedaar hai. Title mein tell ka matlab hai pehchaanna ya alag-alag pehchaanna, jaise jab tum judwa bachchon ko alag nahi pehchaan paate. Poem aisa dikhaati hai jaise woh wild animals se milne wale travellers ke liye ek serious guide ho, lekin iska har ‘rule’ tab kaam karta hai jab kaam aane ke liye bahut der ho chuki hoti hai. Ise zor se padho: iski uchhalti, regular beat joke ko aur badhaati hai.

3.8.1 Stanza dar stanza

Poem mein chhe-chhe lines ke chhe stanzas hain. Har stanza ek jaanwar ko introduce karta hai aur ek ‘simple’ test deta hai. Dhyaan do ki aakhri stanza tak test hamesha attack ke pal par hi aata hai.

  1. Stanza 1: Asian lion. Lion ka tawny (bhoora-peela) coat ek clue hai, lekin poem ka proof uski dahaad hai, jo tum marte waqt sunte ho. Joke yeh hai ki pehchaan aur maut ek saath aate hain.
  2. Stanza 2: Bengal tiger. Stripes tiger ko pehchaan dilaati hain, phir bhi jo ‘simple rule’ diya gaya hai woh hai yeh check karna ki woh tumhe khaata hai ya nahi. Kaha gaya hai ki tiger tumhe ‘greet’ karta hai, jo ironic hai: yeh koi friendly welcome nahi, aur jise kha liya gaya ho uske liye rule kisi kaam ka nahi.
  3. Stanza 3: leopard. Spots dikhne wala clue hain, lekin tumhe pakka tabhi pata chalta hai jab woh tum par jhapat chuka ho, aur cheekhna bas ek aur chhalaang ko bulaata hai. Leapt aur leap ki ajeeb spellings Section 3.8.2 mein samjhaayi gayi hain.
  4. Stanza 4: bear. Ghar par bhi tum safe nahi: bear apni haddi tod dene wali jhappi se pehchaana jaata hai, aur jise ab bhi shak ho use ek aur ‘caress’ ka wada kiya jaata hai. Caress ek pyaar bhara sparsh hota hai, isliye yeh word comic understatement hai.
  5. Stanza 5: crocodile ya hyena? Yeh stanza do popular maanyataon par tika hai: ki hyenas hanste hain, aur ki crocodiles apna shikaar khaate waqt aansoo bahaate hain. To muskaan matlab hyena aur aansoo matlab crocodile, ek aisa test jo phir se sirf unke jabdon ki pahunch mein hi kaam karta hai.
  6. Stanza 6: chameleon. Jaanleva jaanwaron ke baad aata hai ek harmless lizard, jise comically obvious details ke saath describe kiya gaya hai (iske wings nahi hain!). Test ek paheli hai: agar tree khaali dikhe, to chameleon wahin hai, itna achha camouflaged ki tum use dekh nahi sakte. Joke khatre se bhes badalne ki taraf mud jaata hai.

1/7Chhe animals, chhe ‘tests’: unmein se paanch bahut der se aate hain.

Fig. 3.7Aakhri ko chhod kar har test tumhe bachaane ke liye bahut der se aata hai.

Kab pehchaanoge? title ke neeche do rows mein chhe cards. Har card ek animal ka naam deta hai, do chhoti lines mein poem ka test deta hai aur ek verdict ke saath khatam hota hai. Step 1 mein chhe ke chhe cards dikhte hain. Steps 2 se 7 tak ek-ek card highlight hota hai: Asian lion ki dahaad tum marte waqt sunoge; Bengal tiger ke liye, kya woh tumhe khaata hai; leopard tum par baar-baar jhapatta hai; bear tumhe bahut zor se jhappi deta hai, aur chaaron par too late laga hai; crocodile ke liye, hansa to hyena aur roya to crocodile, yeh bhi too late; aur chameleon ke liye tum tree dekhte ho aur kuch nahi dikhta, jis par safe hai laga hai.

3.8.2 Tone, humour aur poetic devices

Speaker aur tone. Speaker ek shaant, madadgaar guide jaisa lagta hai, lekin uski salaah bekaar aur behuda hai. Yeh mock-serious tone hi humour ki jaan hai: jaanleva khatre ko itne aaraam se describe kiya gaya hai jaise bird-watching ki koi tip ho. Mood halka aur khilandda hai, kabhi daraane wala nahi.

Form. Har stanza rhyme scheme ababcc follow karta hai. Baari-baari rhyme karti chaar lines situation set karti hain, aur aakhri couplet punchline deta hai, jaise kisi joke ki aakhri line. Stanza 1 mein dyin’ ko lion se rhyme karna hai: inhe ‘DIE-un’ aur ‘LIE-un’ bolo, to rhyme ho jaati hai.

Table 3.3Poem ke devices
DeviceKahanEffect
Poetic licencedyin’, lept, lep, nonplusrhyme ya beat bachaata hai; comic lagta hai
Ironytiger ka ‘greets’; bear ka ‘caress’; merry hyenasnaram words, jaanleva kaam
Personificationhanste hyenas, rote crocodilesinsaani feelings, mazaak ke liye
Inversionverb end mein rakha gayarhyme theek baithaata hai
Repetitionvery, very hard; againkhatre par comic zor
Imagerytawny coat, stripes, spotshum har animal ki tasveer bana lete hain
Purane forms’Twill, ’Tisnakli formal awaaz

Short mein, humour teen jagah se aata hai: situation (aisi salaah jo bekaar hai), hinsak kaamon ke liye naram words ki irony, aur woh poetic licence jo poet spelling aur grammar ke saath leta hai. Personification (muskuraate hyenas) aur inversion (rhyme fit karne ke liye words ka order ulta karna) jaise chhote touches maze ko aur badhaate hain. Lept aur lep ki spelling Leopard ke pehle syllable ki goonj ke liye rakhi gayi hai, jo ‘lep’ bola jaata hai.

Answer (B) Jab woh tumhe khaana shuru kar de

  1. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Wild) Q1

Stanza 1 ka end zor se padho. Do rhyming words ko rhyme karwaane ke liye unhe kaise bolna padega, aur poet ne ek letter kyun hataaya?

    Solution dikhao

Normally dying and lion do not rhyme. Dropping the final g gives dyin’, and if you say ‘DIE-un’ and ‘LIE-un’, the two words rhyme.

The poet takes this liberty to keep the rhyme scheme, and the casual, clipped word adds to the comic tone.

  2. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Wild) Q2

Poem mein lion aur tiger ko kin nishaanon se pehchaana jaata hai, aur kis pal tum har ek ke baare mein pakka ho sakte ho?

    Solution dikhao

The lion is a large tawny beast that comes at you; you know it is a lion when it roars over you as you die.

The tiger has black stripes on a yellow background; you know it is a tiger when it eats you. In both cases you are sure only when it is too late.

  3. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Wild) Q3

Stanza 3 mein poet verb leap ke do forms ki spelling alag tarah se likhti hai. Standard spellings kya hain, aur usne unhe kyun badla?

    Solution dikhao

The standard forms are leapt and leap. She writes lept and lep so that they echo the ‘lep’ sound at the start of Leopard, linking the verb to the animal.

The misspelling is deliberate poetic licence, and it makes the stanza funnier.

  4. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Wild) Q4

English mein bear hug aur crocodile tears ki baat hoti hai. Hindi ya kisi aur Indian language se, jo tum jaante ho, animals par do expressions do aur unhe samjhao.

    Solution dikhao
    • घड़ियाली आँसू बहाना (ghadiyali aansoo bahana): to shed crocodile tears, that is, to pretend to be sad.
    • गिरगिट की तरह रंग बदलना (girgit ki tarah rang badalna): to change colour like a chameleon, that is, to keep changing sides.
    • भैंस के आगे बीन बजाना (bhains ke aage been bajana): to play the been before a buffalo, that is, to waste fine words on someone who cannot value them.
  5. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Wild) Q5

Poet likhti hai ‘A novice might nonplus’. Ise standard English mein likho, aur samjhao ki uska version poem ke liye behtar kyun hai.

    Solution dikhao

Standard English: ‘A novice might be nonplussed’ (a beginner might be puzzled).

The poet’s shorter form keeps the line to the beat of the poem and ends on nonplus, which rhymes with thus. The slightly wrong grammar also adds to the playful tone.

  6. Short answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Wild) Q6

English ya kisi Indian language ki koi aur poem batao jo language ke rules todti ho, ya koi humorous poem jo tumhe pasand ho. Use khilandda kya banaata hai?

    Solution dikhao
    • Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’ invents words such as frabjous, yet we still follow the story.
    • Sukumar Ray’s Bengali collection Abol Tabol is full of nonsense creatures and comic rhymes.
    • The Hindi poet Kaka Hathrasi wrote witty, rhyming hasya poems about everyday life.

Tumhare answer mein poem ka naam aur words ya ideas ke saath uske khel ka ek example hona chahiye.

  7. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Wild) Q7

Jo stanza tumhe sabse funny lagta hai use chuno. Kuch sentences mein samjhao ki humour idea se aata hai, language se, ya dono se.

    Solution dikhao

Model: I like the bear stanza most. The idea is funny, because you identify a bear while it is crushing you. The language makes it funnier: the poet calls the deadly hug a ‘caress’ and promises one more if you are still unsure. So the humour comes from both the absurd situation and the ironic word choice.

3.9 The Ball Poem

Doosri poem hansi se dukh ki taraf mudti hai. Iska poora event bahut chhota hai: ek bachche ki ball paani mein ludhak jaati hai aur chali jaati hai. Phir bhi poet is pal ko aise dekhta hai jaise yeh bachche ki zindagi ka turning point ho. Ise padh kar pata karo ki ek sasta khilauna itna maayne kyun rakh sakta hai.

3.9.1 Poem chaar movements mein

Poem 18 lines ka ek lagaataar block hai jismein koi regular rhyme scheme nahi. Yeh chaar stages se guzarti hai, jinhe hum line numbers se follow kar sakte hain.

  • Lines 1–4: loss. Ek adult speaker scene dekh raha hai. Uske shuruaati bechain sawaal sympathy dikhate hain, isse pehle ki hum jaanein ki hua kya hai. Ball ka sadak par befikr uchhalna, jis par baar-baar aaya word merrily zor deta hai, uske achaanak harbour mein girne ko aur bhi teekha bana deta hai: ek line ke andar khushi loss mein badal jaati hai.
  • Lines 5–9: dukh. Speaker is aasaan tasalli ko kinaare kar deta hai ki balls badli ja sakti hain. Boy ka dukh poora hai, aur woh use jama deta hai. Paani mein uska der tak ghoorna batata hai ki woh ball ke saath bitaaye saare dinon ko yaad kar raha hai, isliye loss sirf ek khilaune ka nahi, yaadon ka aur khud bachpan ka hai.
  • Lines 9–14: koi rescue nahi. Speaker jaan-boojh kar khud ko rokta hai. Doosri ball khareedna (dime das cent ka sikka hai) asli baat ko chook jaana hoga. Yeh boy ka responsibility ka pehla swaad hai: possessions ki duniya mein cheezein har waqt kho jaati hain ya chheen li jaati hain, aur paisa ek cheez ki jagah to le sakta hai lekin uske matlab ki kabhi nahi. Isiliye poet paise ko external kehta hai.
  • Lines 15–18: lesson. Seekhna khamosh aur andar ka hai, jo ghoorte hue boy ke andar ho raha hai. Woh ‘epistemology of loss’ khoj raha hai: loss kya hai, aur usse kaise ubharna hai. Poet is lesson ko sab tak phailaata hai: har insaan ko loss ke baad phir se khada hona seekhna padta hai, aur zyaadatar logon ko yeh kai baar karna padta hai.

5/5Woh loss ke saath jeena aur phir se khada hona seekhne lagta hai.

Fig. 3.8Khoyi ball se loss ke lesson tak.

Left mein ek sadak dhalaan se quay aur harbour ke paani tak jaati hai; right mein teen boxes ek seedhi banaate hain jin par neeche se upar dukh, paise se nahi aur khade ho likha hai. Step 1 mein ek ball dashed trail ke saath sadak par uchhalti dikhti hai. Step 2 mein ball harbour mein hai aur uske chaaron taraf lehrein hain. Step 3 mein sabse neeche ka box, dukh, jalta hai. Step 4 mein ek kata hua das cent ka sikka judta hai aur beech ka box, paise se nahi, jalta hai. Step 5 mein teenon boxes jalte hain, aur end khade ho par hota hai.

3.9.2 Themes, tone aur devices

  • Loss zindagi ka hissa hai. Har koi cheezein aur log khota hai; poem ek chhote se loss ko us sach ki taraf pehla kadam maanti hai.
  • Bada hona. Ek hi dopahar mein boy befikr khel se ek adult samajh ki taraf badhta hai.
  • Responsibility. Cheezon ka maalik hone ka matlab hai yeh maan lena ki woh kho sakti hain.
  • Paisa matlab ki jagah nahi le sakta. Nayi ball khareedna aasaan hai; purani ball mein basi yaadein nahi.
  • Resilience. Asli lesson loss nahi, balki uske baad kaise khade hona hai, yeh hai.

Speaker, tone aur mood. Speaker ek adult observer hai jo boy ka dard samajhta hai kyunki usne khud aise loss jhele hain. Uska tone naram, hamdard aur sochne wala hai. Mood udaasi se shaant sweekriti ki taraf jaata hai.

  • Symbol: ball bachpan, masoomiyat aur har us cheez ke liye hai jise hum sanjo kar rakhte hain aur kho dete hain.
  • Enjambment: sentences ek line se agli line mein beh jaate hain (jaise lines 3–4 aur 8–9), jo ball ke uchhalne aur feelings ki bauchhaar ki nakal karte hain.
  • Repetition: line 2 mein do baar what, do baar merrily, aur khade hone wala aakhri phrase, jo main lesson par zor dene ke liye do baar kaha gaya hai.
  • Imagery: uchhalti ball, aur harbour ko ghoorta hua akda, kaanpta boy.
  • Direct address: speaker seedhe boy se baat karta hai, use little boy kehta hai, halaanki woh use beech mein nahi tokega.
  • Koi regular rhyme scheme nahi: dheeli, bina rhyme ki lines aisi lagti hain jaise koi zor se soch raha ho.

Speaker boy ko nayi ball ke liye paise kyun nahi deta?
Answer dekho

Answer (C) Use lagta hai ki boy ko loss khud sehna seekhna hoga.

Speaker jaan-boojh kar khud ko rokta hai: boy ko seekhna hoga ki loss kya hota hai aur uske baad kaise khade hona hai. Kahin se nahi lagta ki speaker gareeb ya gussa hai.

Practice 3.9: Poem ke baare mein socho: answers ke saath

  1. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Ball) Q1

Speaker beech mein na padne, ya boy ko doosri ball ke liye paise na dene ka faisla karta hai. Uske reasons samjhao.

    Solution dikhao

He respects the boy’s grief and does not want to interrupt a private moment.

He also knows a new ball would not replace the old one, which held the boy’s memories. Most of all, the boy must learn for himself what loss means and how to recover.

  2. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Ball) Q2

Boy harbour ko aise ghoorta hai jaise apne bachpan ke saare dinon ko dekh raha ho. Isse ball aur uske past ke baare mein kya pata chalta hai?

    Solution dikhao

It suggests the ball has been his companion for years, part of much of his childhood play.

The ball is tied to happy memories, so losing it feels like losing part of his childhood. That is why his grief is so deep.

  3. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Ball) Q3

Jab poet kehta hai ki boy ab possessions ki duniya mein responsibility mehsoos karta hai, to uska matlab kya hai?

    Solution dikhao

We live in a world where people own things, and things are always being lost, broken or taken.

Owning something brings the responsibility of caring for it and of accepting its loss. The boy is realising this for the first time.

  4. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Ball) Q4

Kya poem batati hai ki yeh boy ka loss ka pehla experience hai? Poem ke kisi word ya phrase se apne answer ko support karo.

    Solution dikhao

It seems to be his first real loss. The poet says that now he senses his first responsibility, which shows the feeling is new to him.

His shocked, frozen grief also suggests he has never had to face loss before.

  5. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Ball) Q5

Apne words mein samjhao ki ball khone se boy kya lesson leta hai.

    Solution dikhao

He is learning that loss is a part of life: things will be lost and money cannot bring back what they meant.

He is also learning to accept the loss, bear the pain and carry on, which the poet calls learning how to stand up. Everyone must learn this, often more than once.

  6. Long answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem (Ball) Q6

Us time par ek paragraph (100–120 words) likho jab tumne koi aisi cheez khoyi jo tumhare liye keemti thi. Apni feelings describe karo aur batao ki, agar kisi cheez ne, to kis cheez ne tumhe sambhalne mein madad ki.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: When I was twelve, I lost the wristwatch my grandfather gave me on my birthday. I left it in a train washroom and realised only after the train had moved on. I felt sick and angry with myself. The watch was cheap, but it reminded me of the afternoon he taught me to read the time, and he had died the next winter. My parents offered to buy a new one, but I refused, because that would have felt like pretending. Slowly I accepted that the memory was mine even without the watch. Now I am more careful with things I love, and I keep their memories safe in a diary.

Key points: what was lost; why it mattered; honest feelings; how you coped; what changed.

    3. Passage ka kaun sa word batata hai ki uski maa ke jawaab ne uska mazaak udaaya?

      Answer dekho

      Solution dikhao

His mother picks up a piece of fish and starts flying across to him, so he believes he is about to be fed.

His First Flight: woh paragraph padho jismein young gull aakhir mein machhli par dive karta hai aur khud ko udta hua paata hai.

    1. Uski maa ledge se thoda pehle kyun ruk jaati hai?

      Solution dikhao

    2. Uska darr kitni der rehta hai, aur uski jagah kya aata hai?

      Solution dikhao

Only about a minute. Then his wings spread, the wind supports him, and fear gives way to a dizzy delight.

    3. Jab birds ke liye kaha jaata hai ki woh ‘banking’ kar rahe hain, to iska kya matlab hai?

      Answer dekho

Answer (A) mudte waqt ek taraf jhukna

    4. Girne ka pal uske darr ke baare mein kya dikhata hai?

      Solution dikhao

  3. Short answerMedium

The Black Aeroplane: woh paragraphs padho jahan narrator pehli baar storm clouds dekhta hai aur apna faisla karta hai.

    1. Clouds ki tulna kisse ki gayi hai, aur yeh tulna kya batati hai?

      Solution dikhao

To black mountains (a simile). It suggests they are huge, solid-looking and threatening, a wall he cannot get past.

    2. Woh na clouds ke upar se ud sakta hai na unke aas-paas se ja sakta hai. Kyun?

      Solution dikhao

Climbing above them is impossible, and a detour round either end would need more fuel than he has left.

    3. Woh kaun si safe choice thukraata hai, aur kyun?

      Solution dikhao

Turning back to Paris. He rejects it because he wants to get home and is looking forward to a big breakfast.

    2. Speaker shuru mein what ko kyun dohraata hai?

      Solution dikhao

To show his concern and the boy’s helplessness: there seems to be nothing the boy can do.

    3. Loss ke baad boy ki haalat describe karo.

      Solution dikhao

He is overwhelmed by grief: frozen to the spot and shaking, his eyes fixed on the water.

    4. Use yeh kehna bekaar kyun hoga ki aur bhi balls hain?

      Solution dikhao

This ball holds his memories and his childhood; another ball cannot replace it, so the comfort would mean nothing.

Board practice B: short answers (40–50 words): answers ke saath

  1. Short answerEasy

Young seagull ki family ne use udaane ki koshish kaise ki?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: His parents scolded him and threatened to let him starve. The whole family then mocked him from the plateau and ignored him. Finally his mother flew towards him with a fish and stopped just out of reach, so that hunger made him lunge off the ledge.

Key points: threats; mockery; being ignored; the mother’s trick with food.

  2. Short answerMedium

Jab young seagull ne sea par utarne ki koshish ki to kya hua, aur story kaise khatam hoti hai?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: He took the green sea for solid ground and tried to stand on it. His legs sank, and he was too tired and hungry to rise again. Then he found himself floating, while his family surrounded him, praising him and feeding him pieces of dog-fish.

Key points: mistake about the ‘floor’; fright; floating; praise and food; first flight complete.

  3. Short answerMedium

‘The Black Aeroplane’ mein storm mein udne se pehle aur baad ki narrator ki feelings ka contrast batao.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: Before the storm he was relaxed and happy, enjoying the quiet night and dreaming of breakfast and his family. Inside the storm he became frightened and helpless, because his compass, radio and instruments failed and he was lost. Only the strange plane brought back his hope.

Key points: calm and confident before; fear and helplessness inside; relief when guided.

  4. Short answerMedium

Narrator bina sawaal kiye ajeeb aeroplane ke peeche kyun gaya?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: He was completely lost, with no compass, no radio and no view of the ground, and his fuel was running out. The other pilot seemed to know he was lost and signalled him to follow. With no other hope, he obeyed gratefully.

Key points: instruments dead; lost; low fuel; the stranger’s signal; trust born of helplessness.

  5. Short answerMedium

‘How to Tell Wild Animals’ ki poet bear ki jhappi ko caress kyun kehti hai?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: A caress is a soft, tender stroke, but a bear’s hug crushes its victim. Using such a soft word for a deadly squeeze is ironic understatement. It keeps the tone light and makes the danger comic rather than frightening.

Key points: meaning of caress; irony; deadly hug; humorous tone.

  6. Short answerMedium

‘How to Tell Wild Animals’ ko humorous poem kya banaata hai?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: Every ‘test’ for identifying an animal works only when the animal is attacking you, which makes the advice absurd. Ironic words like ‘greets’ and ‘caress’, playful spellings such as lept and lep, and a bouncy rhyme scheme make deadly danger sound light and funny.

Key points: useless tests; irony; poetic licence; rhythm and rhyme; mock-serious tone.

  7. Short answerHard

‘The Ball Poem’ ka speaker paise ko external kyun kehta hai?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: Money lies outside the real loss. It can buy another ball, but not the memories and feelings tied to the old one. The boy’s grief is inside him, so only understanding and acceptance, not money, can help him recover.

Key points: money buys objects, not meaning; grief is inward; acceptance is the cure.

  8. Short answerMedium

‘The Ball Poem’ mein ball kis cheez ka symbol hai?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: The ball symbolises the boy’s childhood: his carefree, happy days and the memories of playing with it. Losing it marks his first step into the adult world, where losses are real and cannot simply be bought back.

Key points: childhood and innocence; memories; first experience of real loss; growing up.

Practice · 6 questions

Practice questions answers ke saath (NCERT “Board practice C: long answers (100–120 words)”)

  1. Long answerMedium

‘His First Flight’ ke young seagull ka character sketch likho.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: The young seagull is timid and full of self-doubt. Although his wings are longer than his siblings’, he believes they will not carry him, so he stays on the ledge while the others fly. He is also proud: rather than admit his fear, he pretends to doze as though he does not care. Hunger makes him desperate, and when his mother dangles a fish just out of reach, he lunges and falls. In that moment he changes. After a minute of terror, instinct takes over, and his fear turns to wild joy as he dives and soars. By the end he is a confident young bird, welcomed by his family. He shows that courage often comes only after we act.

Key points: timid, self-doubting; proud, face-saving; driven by hunger; transformation; joy and confidence; message about courage.

  2. Long answerHard

‘Kabhi-kabhi bachchon ko badhne mein madad ke liye parents ko sakht hona padta hai.’ ‘His First Flight’ ke hawaale se discuss karo.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: In ‘His First Flight’, the parents know their son can fly, and that a seagull which cannot fly will not survive. Coaxing has not worked, so they turn tough. They scold him, threaten to let him starve and, with the rest of the family, mock him and ignore his begging. Finally the mother uses his hunger, hovering with a fish just out of his reach until he lunges off the ledge. It looks cruel, but it works: within a minute he is flying. Their toughness was really love, aimed at his independence. Human parents, too, sometimes need to stop doing things for their children, so the children discover what they can do. Toughness should still be guided by care, as it is here.

Key points: survival needs flight; gentle methods failed; scolding, starving, the trick; success; tough love; balanced personal view.

  3. Long answerMedium

‘The Black Aeroplane’ ke pilot ne bina zaroorat ka risk liya. Story courage aur caution ke baare mein kya sikhaati hai?

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: The pilot knew the storm was huge, that he could neither climb over it nor fly round it, and that the sensible course was to return to Paris. Yet, eager for home and breakfast, he flew straight in. This was not courage but recklessness, because the risk was out of all proportion to the reward. The result was terrifying: his instruments and radio failed, his fuel ran low and he was utterly lost. Only a mysterious guide saved him. The story suggests that true courage weighs the danger first. Being brave means facing risks that are worth facing, while caution is wise when a small comfort is all there is to gain. The pilot’s relief at walking away from his plane hints that he learnt this.

Key points: options he had; the reason he chose the storm; consequences; courage versus recklessness; lesson; personal view.

  4. Long answerHard

Tumhare hisaab se black aeroplane ka pilot kaun tha? Story se evidence ke saath apni raay rakho.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: I believe the guide was something supernatural, perhaps a guardian spirit or the ghost of a pilot. Several details support this. The plane flew through a violent storm with no lights, yet the narrator could make out the pilot looking at him and waving. It seemed to know he was lost and led him for half an hour to the only airport he could reach, just as his fuel ran out. When he landed, it vanished, and the radar operator said no other aircraft had been flying. Some readers argue that the narrator imagined it in his panic, but that cannot explain how he found a runway without instruments. The writer leaves the answer open, which makes the story memorable.

Key points: a clear view; three or more details (no lights, the face and wave, the timing, it vanished, the radar); one other reading mentioned; open ending.

  5. Long answerHard

‘Kuch khona humein bada hona sikha sakta hai.’ ‘The Ball Poem’ ke hawaale se discuss karo.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: In ‘The Ball Poem’, a boy watches his ball bounce into the harbour. The ball is cheap, but it holds his childhood memories, so his grief is deep and he stands frozen. The adult speaker could give him money for a new ball but chooses not to, because money is external and cannot buy back what the ball meant. Instead, the boy must face his first responsibility in a world where possessions are always being lost. Silently, he begins to understand what loss is and how to stand up after it. This is growing up: accepting that loss is part of life and finding the strength to carry on. The poet says every person must learn this, and most learn it many times.

Key points: the loss and its meaning; grief; the speaker holding back; responsibility; epistemology of loss; growing up; universal lesson.

  6. Long answerHard

Is chapter ki dono stories mein ek dara hua flyer hai jise madad milti hai. Tulna karo ki dono mein madad kaise aati hai.

    Solution dikhao

Model answer: In ‘His First Flight’, the young seagull’s fear is inside him: he can fly but does not believe it. His family helps by being tough, and his mother’s trick with the fish pushes him off the ledge, where instinct does the rest. In ‘The Black Aeroplane’, the pilot’s danger is outside him: a storm, dead instruments and almost no fuel. His help comes from a silent stranger in a plane that should not exist, who leads him to safety and vanishes. The gull is pushed by those who love him; the pilot is guided by an unknown helper. Both learn something. The gull learns he can fly, and the pilot learns the cost of a careless risk and the value of help received.

Key points: inner fear versus outer danger; family versus stranger; push versus guide; what each learns; a clear comparison.
