8.1 Padhne se pehle

Woh waqt yaad karo jab tumhare kisi kareebi ne koi keemti cheez kho di thi: dada-dadi, koi pet, ya best friend jo doosre sheher chala gaya. Logon ne unhe tasalli dene ke liye kya kaha? Kuch words madad karte hain. Kuch sirf dard ko aur tez kar dete hain. Yeh unit ek young maa ke baare mein hai jo apne bachche ki death ko accept nahi kar paati, aur ek teacher ke baare mein jo bina ek bhi daant-phatkar ke uski madad karte hain.

Title se shuru karte hain. Log sermon word ko mazaak ya shikayat ke taur par bhi use karte hain, aisi lambi advice ke liye jo kisi ne maangi hi nahi: “Didi gave me a sermon on keeping my phone away at dinner.”

Lecture

  • kisi subject ya knowledge ke area par
  • koi teacher ya expert deta hai
  • maksad jaankari dena aur samjhana
  • aksar classroom ya hall mein

Talk

  • koi bhi topic, aksar informal
  • koi bhi de sakta hai jiske paas share karne ko kuch ho
  • jaankari, entertainment ya persuade kar sakta hai

Do sermons poori duniya mein famous hain. Sermon on the Mount Jesus Christ ne diya tha. Yeh Gospel of Matthew (chapters 5–7) mein likha hai aur ismein apne dushmanon se bhi pyaar karne ki teaching hai. Is unit ka sermon Buddha aur Benares se juda hai, jo Ganga kinaare Varanasi ka purana naam hai.

Inmein se paanch words us kahani ka emotional safar dikhate hain jo tum padhne wale ho (Fig. 8.1). Dekho kaise mood girta hai, ek pal ke liye uthta hai, phir girta hai aur aakhir mein shaant ho jaata hai.

4/4Har koi death ke subject to hai; woh composed ho jaati hai.

Fig. 8.1Jaanne wale words, kahani ki mood line par rakhe hue.NCERT p. 111

Upar ke paas ek dashed line calm ko dikhati hai. Step 1 mein, jiska heading 'Dukh aaya' hai, ek curve calm se 'afflicted' se hote hue 'lamentation' wale neeche ke point tak girta hai. Step 2, 'Ummeed ki kiran', mein curve uthkar 'procure' tak jaata hai. Step 3, 'Har ghar mein dukh', mein woh apne sabse neeche ke point 'desolation' tak gir jaata hai. Step 4, 'Acceptance, sukoon', mein woh 'subject to' se hote hue upar chadhta hai aur calm line ke upar 'composed' par khatam hota hai. Girte points laal dots hain aur uthte points hare dots.

Answer (C) Ek monk jo samjha raha hai ki humein un logon ko kyun maaf karna chahiye jo humein chot pahunchate hain

Sermon faith, values ya jeene ke tareeke par hota hai, aur monk maafi sikha raha hai. Maths class ek lecture hai: woh knowledge sikhati hai, jeene ka tareeka nahi.

8.2 Prince se Buddha tak

Text teacher ki life ke ek chhote sketch se shuru hota hai. Gautama Buddha ka janm Prince Siddhartha Gautama ke roop mein Lumbini mein hua tha, jo aaj ke Nepal mein India ki northern border ke paas hai. Textbook unki life ko 563–483 BCE ka batati hai; aaj kai historians ise thoda baad ka maante hain. Unke shuru ke saal us life ke bilkul ulte the jo unhone baad mein chuni: daulat, padhai, ek princess se shaadi, ek beta, aur dukh ki koi jhalak tak nahi.

Yeh hifaazat unke twenties mein toot gayi. Palace ke bahar chaar achanak mulaqaaton ne, jinhe aaj four sights kehte hain, unhe bimaari, budhapa, death (ek funeral) aur bhiksha par jeene wala ek ghoomta hua monk dikhaya. Pehle teen se unhone seekha ki koi bhi, ek prince bhi, dukh se nahi bach sakta. Chautha ek raasta dikhata tha: aaraam chhodo aur sach ki khoj karo. Siddhartha ne bilkul yahi kiya.

5/5Woh sikhana shuru karte hain; unka pehla sermon Benares ke paas hota hai.

Fig. 8.2Siddhartha ka safar, paanch padaavon mein.NCERT p. 111

Picture mein ek dotted road chalti hai jis par paanch gol padaav hain: ek palace, four sights ke liye ek aankh, khoj ke liye pairon ke nishaan, tree ke liye peepal ka patta, aur Benares ke liye ek wheel. Step 1 mein sirf palace chamakta hai aur panel par 'Dard se door prince' likha hai. Step 2 mein aankh jal uthti hai aur panel par bimaari, budhapa, death aur ek monk ki list hai. Step 3 mein saalon ke bhatakne ke liye pairon ke nishaan chamakte hain. Step 4 mein peepal ka patta chamakta hai aur panel kehta hai ki woh jaag gaye, Buddha ban gaye. Step 5 mein Benares ka wheel chamakta hai: woh sikhana shuru karte hain.

Iske baad saalon tak khoj chali. Khoj ek peepal tree ke neeche khatam hui, jahan unhone meditate kiya, is irade se ki jab tak jawab nahi milega tab tak wahin rahenge. Jab enlightenment (बोध) mila, to woh Buddha ban gaye, yaani ‘jaaga hua’, aur tab se us tree ko Bodhi Tree kehte hain (bodhi ka matlab hai jaagna). Phir unhone sikhana shuru kiya. Textbook ke hisaab se unka pehla sermon Benares mein hua, Ganga kinaare woh pavitra sheher jahan pilgrims ghaaton se nahaate hain.

Yeh introduction aage aane wali kahani ke liye kyun zaroori hai? Jis sach ne young prince ko hila diya tha, ki koi bhi bimaari, budhape aur death se nahi bachta, yahi woh sach hai jise samajhne mein woh ek dukhi maa ki madad karenge. Textbook uske dukh ko inscrutable kehti hai: itna gehra aur itna personal ki sirf logic wahan tak nahi pahunch sakta.

8.3 Kisa Gotami ki kahani

Text ka dil kuch paragraphs mein kahi gayi ek chhoti kahani hai. Pehle ise apni textbook mein padho. Phir in chaar scenes se check karo ki tumne har mod ko follow kiya hai.

Scene 1: ek maa jo chhodne ko taiyaar nahi. Sirf ek insaan uski request ko seriously leta hai. Uske paas khud koi ilaaj nahi hai, lekin woh use ek bade healer ki taraf bhejta hai: Buddha.

Scene 2: ek ajeeb nuskha. Kisa Gotami Buddha ke paas jaati hai aur ilaaj ki bheekh maangti hai. Woh na mana karte hain, na use kadwa sach batate hain. Iske bajaye woh kuch aisa maangte hain jo aasaan lagta hai: mutthi bhar mustard seed. Lagbhag har Indian kitchen mein mustard seed hota hai, isliye uski ummeed aasmaan chhoo leti hai. Phir woh ek shart jodte hain. Ismein ek pench hai. Seed aise ghar se aana chahiye jahan death ne kabhi kadam na rakha ho.

Scene 3: doosra round. Doosra round pehle wale ka bilkul ulta aaina hai. Is baar padosi meharbaan hain, aur har darwaaze par uske haathon mein seed thama diya jaata hai. Mushkil uske agle sawaal mein hai, family mein hui deaths ke baare mein. Har ghar ke paas loss ki ek kahani hai, aur kuch log usse kehte hain ki unke purane zakhm na kurede. Darwaaze dar darwaaze sach saamne aata jaata hai: death sab ke ghar aa chuki hai.

5/5Koi ghar death se khaali nahi: seed kabhi nahi mil sakta.

Fig. 8.3Wahi gali, do bilkul alag rounds.NCERT p. 112

Ek sadak ke kinaare paanch gharon ki line hai. Step 1 mein, jiska heading 'Round 1: dawa?' hai, har ghar par 'no cure' dikhta hai aur panel kehta hai ki woh death ko accept nahi karti. Step 2 mein ghar dhundhle ho jaate hain aur panel Buddha ka kaam dikhata hai: aise ghar ka mustard seed jahan koi na mara ho. Step 3, 'Round 2: mustard seed?', mein har ghar par 'seed: yes' dikhta hai aur panel kehta hai ki sab khushi se seed dete hain. Step 4 mein sawaal hai 'Yahan koi mara hai?': har chhat ke upar ek chhoti si lau dikhti hai aur har ghar ke neeche 'a loss' likha hai. Step 5 mein heading 'Har ghar mein loss' hai aur panel kehta hai ki death har ghar tak pahunchi hai.

Scene 4: lamps ka sabak. Thaki-haari woh shaam dhalte sadak kinaare baith jaati hai, aur uski nazar sheher ke lamps par jaati hai. Ek bhadak uthta hai, doosra bujh jaata hai, aur dheere dheere raat un sabko nigal leti hai. Yahin kahani chupchaap mod leti hai. Un chhoti si roshniyon mein use har insaani life ki shakal dikhti hai, apne bete ki bhi. Iske saath woh khud ko imaandaari se dekhti hai: uska dukh sirf uske apne loss ke baare mein tha, jabki har family yahi bojh uthati hai. Use ummeed ki ek jhalak bhi milti hai. Jo bhi is apne aap mein simte grief ko chhod de, woh isse paar paa sakta hai.

4/4Lamps ki tarah lives bhi kuch der chamakti hain aur phir bujh jaati hain.

Fig. 8.4Kisa Gotami ne sadak kinaare se kya dekha, aur usne use kya sikhaya.NCERT p. 112

Shaam ke aasmaan ke saamne buildings ki ek line hai, jo sadak kinaare se dikh rahi hai. Step 1 mein, jiska heading 'Shaam ko lamps jale' hai, har khidki peeli chamakti hai. Step 2, 'Kuch bujhe, kuch bhadke', mein lagbhag aadhi khidkiyan andheri ho gayi hain jabki baaki abhi bhi chamak rahi hain. Step 3, 'Sheher par andhera', mein ek bhi khidki nahi jal rahi, narangi shaam ka aasmaan raat ka neela ho gaya hai aur ek halka chaand dikhta hai. Step 4 mein wahi andhera scene 'Har life ka yahi haal' heading ke saath hai.

How selfish am I in my grief!

Kisa Gotami, ‘The Sermon at Benares’ mein

Selfish se uska kya matlab hai? Woh khud ko laalchi ya rude nahi keh rahi. Uska matlab hai ki uske grief ne uski poori duniya ko ek insaan aur ek loss tak chhota kar diya tha. Usne apne bete ki death ko aisa galat maana jo sirf uske saath hua, jabki jin gharon mein woh gayi, un sabne yahi dukh jhela tha. Jaise hi use yeh dikhta hai, uska dukh uske aur doosre logon ke beech deewar nahi rehta. Woh unse jodne wala rishta ban jaata hai.

8.4 Buddha ka sermon

Text ka doosra hissa khud sermon hai. Yeh kahani nahi balki ek argument hai, aur yeh facts se advice ki taraf badhta hai. Ise apni textbook mein padho, phir is section se uske chaar bade ideas follow karo.

1. Death tay hai. Buddha aise facts se shuru karte hain jin par koi behas nahi kar sakta. Har life chhoti hai aur usmein kuch na kuch dukh hai, aur janm ka ant hamesha death mein hota hai. Umar aur hoshiyaari se koi fark nahi padta: bachcha aur buzurg, vidwaan aur moorkh, sab mortal (नश्वर) hain.

4/4Jo bhi janm leta hai, uske saath yahi hota hai.

Fig. 8.5Mortality ki sermon wali do images.NCERT p. 113

Do panels saath saath hain. Left mein ek paka fruit patton bhari daal se latka hai; right mein ek poora mitti ka ghada rakha hai. Step 2 mein fruit zameen par gir jaata hai aur 'pehle girta' words dikhte hain. Step 3 mein ghade par neeche tak ek darar aa jaati hai, ek tukda toot jaata hai, aur 'ek din tootega' words dikhte hain. Step 4 mein dono waise hi rehte hain aur neeche 'Har life ka yahi haal' line dikhti hai.

2. Koi kisi ko bacha nahi sakta. Pyaar koi dhaal nahi hai. Family kitni bhi parwah kare, jab death aati hai to woh kisi member ko zinda nahi rakh sakti. Buddha ki image kathor hai: marne wale aise le jaaye jaate hain jaise kisi bail ko kasaai ke paas le jaate hain, aur family aansuon mein bebas dekhti rehti hai. Maksad kroorta nahi, imaandaari hai. Grief ke peeche aksar ek dukh bhara vishwas chhupa hota hai ki kisi ko yeh loss rok lena chahiye tha.

3. Rone se kuch nahi hota. Aansu natural hain, lekin Buddha poochhte hain ki kabhi na khatam hone wala maatam aakhir kya haasil karta hai: mare hue ke liye kuch nahi, aur zinda logon ke liye nuksaan. Shok manane wala bas aur dukh uthata hai, yahan tak ki uski sehat bhi jawab de jaati hai. Isliye jo log samajhte hain ki life kaise chalti hai, woh grief ko khud par haavi nahi hone dete.

4. Teer bahar nikalo. Sermon apni sabse yaadgaar tasveer ke saath khatam hota hai (Fig. 8.6). Socho ki dil mein ek teer dhansa hai: Buddha ka “arrow of lamentation”, jo lamentation (विलाप), shikayat aur grief se bana hai. Use andar chhod do to zakhm khula rehta hai. Bahar nikaal do to bharna shuru ho sakta hai. Jo aisa karta hai, woh composed (शांत) ho jaata hai, shaant aur sthir, aur mann ki shaanti paata hai. Dukh ko jeet lene ke baad aisa insaan usse azaad ho jaata hai.

3/3Dil bhar jaata hai: sukoon aur mann ki shaanti.

Fig. 8.6Sermon ki aakhri image: grief ek teer ki tarah jise bahar nikaalna zaroori hai.NCERT p. 113

Ek dil dikhaya gaya hai jismein ek teer dhansa hai aur ek chhota zakhm hai. Step 1 mein uske paas ke labels par 'rona, shikayat, grief' aur 'dard badhe' likha hai. Step 2 mein teer 'Teer bahar nikalo' heading ke neeche dil se upar aur bahar sarakta hai. Step 3 mein teer jaa chuka hai, zakhm aur labels gayab ho jaate hain, dil laal rang se hare rang ka ho jaata hai aur shaant lehrati lines aa jaati hain, aur naye labels par 'composed, shaant' likha hai.

Dhyaan do ki Buddha kya nahi karte. Woh kabhi nahi kehte, “Your son is dead; everyone dies; stop crying.” Aise words pehle hi fail ho chuke the: padosiyon ne use saaf saaf bata diya tha ki bachcha mar chuka hai, aur usne suna hi nahi. Iske bajaye woh use ek aisa kaam dete hain jisse woh khud sach dhoondh le, pyaar se aur ek ek ghar karke. Jab tak woh sermon sunti hai, woh uske liye taiyaar ho chuki hoti hai, kyunki woh use pehle hi jee chuki hai. Teachers ise learning by discovery kehte hain.

Sermon mortals ko pake fruit se compare kyun karta hai?
Answer dekho

Answer (D) Kyunki paka fruit hamesha girne ke kareeb hota hai, jaise jeete log marne ke

Image khatre aur pakke hone ke baare mein hai: paka fruit kabhi bhi gir sakta hai, jaise har jeev kabhi bhi mar sakta hai. Mithaas ka isse koi lena-dena nahi.

8.5 Characters, themes aur message

Text mein do main characters hain. Padosi lagbhag ek chorus ki tarah kaam karte hain: dono rounds mein woh Kisa Gotami ko sach dikhate hain, pehle rookhe tareeke se aur phir pyaar se.

3/3Woh use lecture se nahi, ek task se sikhate hain.

Fig. 8.7Do main characters aur unka aapas mein rishta.

Upar do naam wale panels hain: left mein 'Kisa Gotami' aur right mein 'The Buddha'. Step 1 mein sirf Kisa Gotami ke traits dikhte hain: loving mother, pehle desperate, persistent, honest aur seekhne ko taiyaar. Step 2 mein Buddha ke traits aate hain: compassionate, patient, wise, skilled teacher. Step 3 mein neeche Buddha ki taraf se uski taraf ek arrow jaata hai, jis par 'task se use sikhate hain' likha hai.

Kisa Gotami ek pyaar karne wali, samarpit maa hai. Bete ki death ko accept na karna bewakoofi nahi hai; yeh aisa pyaar hai jo chhod nahi paata. Woh persistent aur ummeed bhari bhi hai: woh ek ke baad ek darwaaza khatkhatati hai, ek baar nahi balki do baar. Sabse badi baat, woh seekhne ke liye khuli hai. Jab aakhir mein sach us tak pahunchta hai, to woh kadwi nahi hoti. Woh imaandaari se khud ko dekhti hai aur badal jaati hai.

Buddha wise, patient aur compassionate hain. Woh uske grief ko sudhaarne ke bajaye uski izzat karte hain, aur samajhte hain ki use sach khud dhoondhna hoga. Woh ek skilled teacher hain jo dawa ki request ko life ke sabak mein badal dete hain. Unka sermon shaant aur tark bhara hai, aur uski tasveerein roz ki life se aati hain, isliye koi bhi unhe samajh sakta hai.

Compare

Kisa Gotami: pehle aur baad mein

Shuru mein

  • grief mein khoyi hui, death ko accept nahi kar paati
  • kisi chamatkaari ilaaj ki ummeed karti hai
  • sirf apna loss dekhti hai
  • bechaini se ek darwaaze se doosre darwaaze jaati hai

Aakhir mein

  • accept karti hai ki death har family mein aati hai
  • jaanti hai ki koi dawa death ko palat nahi sakti
  • shok manane wale doosre logon se judaav mehsoos karti hai
  • shaant hai aur seekhne ko taiyaar
  • Death universal hai. Har jeev ko marna hai; yeh life ka nature hai, koi saza nahi.
  • Grief aur acceptance. Grief natural hai, lekin shaanti tabhi aati hai jab hum loss ko accept karte hain.
  • Grief mein selfishness. Dukh humein bhula sakta hai ki doosre bhi dukh uthate hain; apna saanjha dard dekhna healing ki shuruaat hai.
  • Experience se seekhna. Sabse gehre sabak khud dhoondhe jaate hain, bataaye nahi jaate.
  • Compassion. Buddha ki dayaluta is baat mein dikhti hai ki woh kaise sikhate hain, sirf is mein nahi ki kya sikhate hain.

Message. Death se bacha nahi ja sakta, lekin kabhi na khatam hone wale shok se bacha ja sakta hai. Jab hum dekhte hain ki loss har life ka hissa hai, to hum apne dukh ko jaane de sakte hain, shaanti paa sakte hain, aur doosre logon se door hone ke bajaye unki taraf mud sakte hain.

8.6.2 Clauses ko semicolon ya dash se jodna

Clause (उपवाक्य) words ka aisa group hai jiska apna subject aur verb hota hai. Do clauses jo alag alag sentences ban sakte hain, aam taur par and, but, or, yet ya so jaise word se jode jaate hain. Kabhi kabhi koi joining word fit nahi hota, kyunki ideas ka rishta and se zyada kareebi hai lekin contrast ya result bhi nahi hai. Tab hum semicolon (अर्धविराम) ya dash use kar sakte hain.

3/4Semicolon do kareebi clauses ko jodta hai; uske baad capital letter nahi aata.

Fig. 8.8Clauses ka ek pair, unhe jodne ke chaar tareeke.NCERT p. 114

Do boxes mein clauses 'The rain stopped' aur 'children ran out' hain, aur unke beech joiner ke liye jagah hai. Step 1 mein us jagah full stop hai, doosra clause capital se shuru hota hai, aur rule kehta hai 'Do alag sentences, har ek ka ant full stop'. Step 2 mein us jagah 'and' word hai aur rule joining words batata hai: and, but, or, yet, so. Step 3 mein wahan semicolon hai, aur rule kehta hai ki ideas kareeb se jude hain aur iske baad capital nahi aata. Step 4 mein wahan achanak mod ke liye dash hai, jo lively aur thoda informal hai.

  • Semicolon (;) barabar weight ke do kareebi, poore clauses ko jodta hai. The shop was shut; we bought milk at the station.
  • Dash (—) clauses ko tab jodta hai jab doosra clause pehle par comment kare, use samjhaye ya tezi se mod de. Yeh zyada lively aur informal hai. I finished the whole paper in an hour — I still can't believe it.
  • Semicolon ke baad capital letter nahi (jab tak agla word koi naam na ho), aur uske saath and ya but bhi nahi.
  • Comma nahi. Akela comma do poore sentences ko nahi jod sakta. It rained all night, the river rose galat hai; semicolon ya full stop use karo.

Ab sermon ka woh sentence dhoondho jo “For there is not any means…” se shuru hota hai. Yeh teen clauses ko do semicolons se ek saath pirota hai. Simple modern sentences mein todne par uske ideas aise chalte hain: Nobody who is born can escape death. Death follows old age. All living beings are made this way.

Dono versions zor se padho. Teen chhote sentences saaf hain lekin jhatkedaar, alag alag dhol ki thaap jaise. Ek sentence ek lambi saans mein behta hai, aur har semicolon par ruka hua pal ek idea ko jamne deta hai, phir agla idea uspar banta hai. Yeh sthir, gambheer rhythm sermon par jachti hai, isliye zyada readers original ko pasand karte hain.

Kaun sa sentence semicolon ko sahi use karta hai?

Answer (B) The bus was late; we walked to school.

Semicolon do poore clauses ke beech aata hai. Aakhri option mein pehla hissa (‘Because the bus was late’) akela nahi khada ho sakta, isliye wahan comma chahiye.

8.7 Speaking: grief, tab aur ab

Buddha ka sermon 2,500 saal se bhi zyada purana hai. Textbook grief par do modern pieces iske saath rakhti hai aur ek bada sawaal poochti hai: kya Buddha ke ideas aur unke sikhane ka tareeka aaj bhi humse baat karte hain, ya ab hum loss ko behtar tareekon se sambhalte hain? Yahan short mein bataya hai ki dono pieces kya kehte hain. Inhe poora apni book mein padho.

  • Text I: death ke baad sambhalne ki ek guide. Yeh grief mein doobe logon ke do chhote examples se shuru hoti hai, phir un feelings ki list deti hai jo loss ke baad common hain: udaasi, gussa, guilt, anxiety, akelapan, thakaan aur yakeen na hona. Aakhir mein yeh friends aur family ko advice deti hai: haath badhao, sabr rakho, aur dikhao ki tumhe parwah hai, chahe woh insaan baat na karna chahe.
  • Text II: Amitai Etzioni ki ‘Good Grief’, ek sociologist jo apne losses ke baare mein likhte hain: road accident mein unki wife aur, kai saal baad, unka bada beta. Woh is idea ko nahi maante ki grief ko fixed stages se sahi order mein guzarna hi padta hai. Ek rishtedaar ki advice unki madad karti hai: yeh mat poochho ki kyun hua, balki yeh ki bache hue log ek doosre ke liye kya kar sakte hain. Unki family ko ek doosre ki dekhbhaal mein tasalli milti hai, khaas kar bete ki young widow aur uske chhote bachche ki.

3/3Saath chalne wale family aur friends raaste ko sehne laayak bana dete hain.

Fig. 8.9Grief kabhi seedhi saaf seedhiyan nahi chadhta; ghumaavdaar raaste par saath dene wale madad karte hain.NCERT p. 115

Step 1 mein paanch seedhiyan left se right chadhti hain, jin par denial, anger, bargaining, depression aur acceptance likha hai, aur heading 'Neat model: paanch stages' hai. Step 2 mein seedhiyan dhundhli ho jaati hain aur ek dotted raasta unke upar ghoomta hai, door wale side tak pahunchne se pehle kai baar peeche ki taraf loop karta hai, aur us par 'aage, peeche, aage' likha hai. Step 3 mein raaste par teen chhote hare circles dikhte hain, jin par 'family, dost' likha hai, aur heading 'Apne log saath chalein' hai.

Compare

Grief par teen nazariye

Buddha

  • death sabke liye tay hai
  • kabhi na khatam hone wala rona sirf dard badhata hai
  • loss ko accept karo aur grief ko jaane do
  • shaanti andar se aati hai

Coping guide

  • grief kai mili-juli feelings laata hai
  • har insaan alag tarah se shok manata hai
  • friends ko sunna chahiye aur sabr rakhna chahiye
  • sahara doosron se milta hai

Etzioni

  • shok manane ka koi ‘sahi’ tareeka nahi hai
  • gussa imaandaar ho sakta hai, koi galat stage nahi
  • poochho ki hum kya kar sakte hain, yeh nahi ki kyun
  • tasalli ek doosre ki dekhbhaal se milti hai

Dhyaan do ki teeno kis baat par sehmat hain, aur kahan alag hain. Teeno maante hain ki loss life ka hissa hai, aur teeno peeche jaane ke bajaye aage badhne ka raasta dhoondhte hain. Buddha andar ke sukoon aur acceptance par zor dete hain; modern writers feelings aur doosron ke saath par zor dete hain. Kisa Gotami ki kahani mein dono ideas hain: use apne andar shaanti tabhi milti hai jab woh doosron ke grief se milti hai.

Kaun sa idea Buddha aur Etzioni dono maante hain?
Answer dekho

Answer (A) Loss har life ka hissa hai, aur humein aage badhne ka raasta dhoondhna hoga

Dono loss ko life ka hissa maante hain aur aage chalne ka raasta dhoondhte hain. Etzioni fixed stages ko nahi maante, aur dono mein se koi nahi kehta ki shok manane walon ko akela chhod dena chahiye.

8.8 Writing: teen paragraph mein ek page

Writing task mein teen topics mein se kisi ek par ek page, lagbhag teen paragraphs, likhna hai. Tum text ke ideas use kar sakte ho aur apna experience bhi jod sakte ho. Topics yeh hain: kisi ko naya ya mushkil idea samajhne mein madad karna; log mushkil waqt mein ek doosre ka saath kaise dete hain; aur kya tum khud ko anokha maante ho ya arabon mein se ek insaan.

3/3Paragraph 3 reflect karta hai aur ek yaad reh jaane wali line par khatam hota hai.

Fig. 8.10Teen paragraphs, teen kaam.NCERT p. 116

Title bar wale ek page par text lines ke teen blocks hain, jin par 1, 2 aur 3 number hain. Step 1 mein pehla block highlighted hai aur uska label 'Opening: hook + main idea' hai. Step 2 mein doosra, lamba block bhi highlighted hai aur uska label 'Middle: examples, samjhaye' hai. Step 3 mein teesra block bhi highlighted hai aur uska label 'Ending: reflection + last line' hai, taaki teeno parts aur unke kaam ek saath dikhein.

  • Mushkil idea sikhana: woh waqt jab tumhe kuch samajhne mein mushkil hui → Buddha ka tareeka (learner ko khud dhoondhne do) aur koi teacher ya bhai-behen jisne yahi kiya → khud dhoondhna batane se behtar kyun hai.
  • Mushkil waqt mein ek doosre ki madad: tumhari family, school ya town ka koi mushkil waqt → Kisa Gotami ke padosi aur Etzioni ki family → chhote kaam jo madad karte hain: sunna, paas rehna, kaam baantna.
  • Anokhe, ya arabon mein se ek? ek chaunkane wala fact (akele India mein 1.4 billion se zyada log hain) → Kisa Gotami ko laga ki uska loss sirf uska hai, phir pata chala ki yeh sabka saanjha hai → hum dono hain: apni feelings mein anokhe, apni kismat mein sabke jaise.

8.9 For Anne Gregory

Socho koi tumse kahe ki log tumhe sirf tumhare looks ki wajah se pasand karte hain. Tumhe achha lagega, ya thoda bura? Yahi sawaal is chhoti, mazedaar poem ke dil mein hai. Yeh teen stanzas mein ek baatcheet hai. Ek young man bolta hai, sunehre khoobsurat baalon wali ek young woman jawab deti hai, aur aakhri baat woh kehta hai. Woh halke-phulke andaaz mein behas kar rahe hain ki kya koi kabhi use uske asli roop ke liye pyaar kar sakta hai.

4/4Har stanza usi do-line wale idea par khatam hota hai.

Fig. 8.11Kaun kya kehta hai: poem ek teen-turn wali behas ki tarah.NCERT p. 118

Picture mein teen speech bubbles upar se neeche rakhe hain. Step 1 mein sirf upar wala dikhta hai: 'Stanza 1 · he', 'Sirf tumhe koi na chahega', ek solid neele bubble mein. Step 2 mein right par ek dashed narangi bubble aata hai: 'Stanza 2 · she', 'Baal rang loongi'. Step 3 mein neeche teesra solid neela bubble aata hai: 'Stanza 3 · he', 'Sirf God asli tumhe chahe'. Step 4 mein har bubble ke paas 'refrain' likha ek peela tag aata hai, jo dikhata hai ki har stanza usi idea par khatam hota hai.

8.9.1 Stanza by stanza

Stanza 1: young man ka daava. Poem ek bold prediction se shuru hoti hai: use kabhi sirf uske liye pyaar nahi milega. Wajah hai uske baal. Woh unhe uske chehre ke chaaron taraf badi sunehri deewaron ki tarah dekhta hai, itne chamakdaar ki young men na poori hone wali chaahat mein doob jaate hain. Woh ishaara karta hai ki jo bhi aadmi usse pyaar karega, woh uske baalon se bhi pyaar kar raha hoga. Yeh compliment jaisa lagta hai, lekin ismein ek chubhan hai: uski khoobsurti use chhupa deti hai.

Stanza 2: young woman ka jawab. Uske paas ek practical hal hai. Baalon ka rang badla ja sakta hai! Woh unhe brown, black ya carrot-red bhi rang sakti hai, taaki aadmiyon ko uske baalon se aage dekhkar asli insaan se pyaar karna pade. Uska jawab dikhata hai ki woh chahti hai ki use uske dimaag aur nature ke liye value kiya jaaye, looks ke liye nahi. Yeh thoda natkhat bhi hai: woh ek gehre sawaal ko simple solution wali simple problem ki tarah leti hai.

Stanza 3: aakhri baat. Woh maanta nahi, aur religion ka hawala dekar jawab deta hai. Woh batata hai ki ek dharmik boodhe aadmi ne scripture mein saboot dhoondha hai: kisi se sirf uske liye pyaar karna, uske looks ke baare mein soche bina, yeh sirf God kar sakta hai. Doosre shabdon mein, insaani pyaar kabhi bhi kisi insaan ko uske looks se poori tarah alag nahi karta; sirf divine love akeli aatma ko dekhta hai. Poem isi thought par ruk jaati hai aur use jawab dene ka mauka nahi deti.

8.9.2 Devices, mood aur tone

Poem ki sabse chaunkane wali image ek metaphor (रूपक) hai: uske baal “honey-coloured ramparts” ki tarah. Ramparts fort ki oonchi, chaudi deewarein hoti hain. Yeh image ek saath teen baatein kehti hai. Baal ghane aur shaandaar hain; shahad jaise sunehre hain; aur uske kaan aur chehre ke chaaron taraf deewar ki tarah khade hain. Deewarein logon ko bahar rakhti hain. Speaker ishaara karta hai ki uske baal uske asli self ko har paas aane wale se bachate hain, kyunki admirers bahar hi ruk jaate hain (Fig. 8.12).

3/3Admirers ki nazar baalon par ruk jaati hai aur self tak kabhi nahi pahunchti.

Fig. 8.12Ramparts metaphor: khoobsurti jo self ko deewaron mein band kar deti hai.NCERT p. 119

Step 1 mein left par sunehri, battlemented deewar wala ek fort hai, jiska label 'rampart (fort wall)' hai, aur heading 'Ramparts fort bachate' hai. Step 2 mein fort dhundhla ho jaata hai aur right par sunehre baal 'her self' label wale ek dashed circle ke chaaron taraf mudte hain, neeche 'yellow hair' likha hai, aur heading 'Sunehre baal = deewar' hai. Step 3 mein 'looks' wale do arrows bahar se aate hain aur baalon par ruk jaate hain, heading 'Admirers bahar hi ruk jaate' ke neeche.

Allusionstanza 3: ek holy textreligion ko laata hai: sirf divine love hi bina shart ka hai

Refrain. Har stanza lagbhag ek hi jodi lines par khatam hota hai, “for yourself alone” pyaar paane ke baare mein, “yellow hair” ke liye nahi. Sirf pronouns badalte hain: stanzas 1 aur 3 mein you aur your, stanza 2 mein me aur my. Yeh chhota sa badlaav humein batata hai ki kaun bol raha hai, aur repetition main sawaal ko hamare kaanon mein goonjta rakhta hai.

Mood aur tone. Mood halka aur chhed-chhaad bhara hai, jaise ek bade admirer aur ek young woman ke beech dostana nok-jhonk. Is mazaak ke neeche ek serious, thoda udaas thought hai: shayad koi bhi insaani pyaar poori tarah shuddh nahi hota. Tone flattering (stanza 1) se defiant (stanza 2) aur phir wise aur final (stanza 3) tak jaati hai.

Theme aur message. Poem bahari khoobsurti aur andar ke self ko explore karti hai. Log pehle looks se kheenche jaate hain, aur insaanon ke liye dono ko alag karna mushkil, shayad namumkin, hai. Poem ishaara karti hai ki sirf God ka pyaar sach mein bina shart ka hai. Message: logon ko unke asli roop ke liye value karo, aur saath hi imaandaari se maano ki looks hum sab par asar daalte hain.

8.9.3 Poem ke baare mein sochna

Textbook ke questions poem se life ki taraf badhte hain. Kuch cheezein humein doosron se zyada kyun chahiye hoti hain? Kya hum logon se unki qualities ke liye pyaar karte hain, ya unke liye? Aur kya ‘person’ ko kabhi uske dikhne aur vyavhaar karne ke tareeke se alag kiya ja sakta hai?

Cheezein. Hum cheezon ko un qualities ke liye value karte hain jinki list bana sakte hain: phone ko uske camera, battery aur price ke liye; cycle ko uski speed, aaraam aur mazbooti ke liye. Bechne wala bilkul inhi qualities par zor deta hai. Agar tum apni purani cycle bech rahe hote, to tum uske naye tyres, smooth gears aur halke frame ki taraf dhyaan dilaate.

Compare

Qualities se pyaar, ya insaan se pyaar?

Qualities par tika pyaar

  • ek fan ka kisi film star ya cricketer ko poojna
  • kisi topper ko uske marks ke liye admire karna
  • qualities fade hone par fade ho sakta hai
  • cheezon ko value karne ke tareeke ke kareeb

The dancer and the dance. Ek aur poem, ‘Among School Children’ (The Tower, 1928 mein collected), ke end mein Yeats poochhte hain ki hum dancer ko dance se kaise alag pehchaan sakte hain. Insaan apne chalne, bolne aur kaam karne ke tareeke se dikhata hai ki woh kaun hai, isliye ‘real self’ aur uske bahari nishaan aapas mein bandhe hain. Apne dada-dadi ke baare mein socho. Saalon mein unke looks badal gaye, phir bhi tumhara pyaar gehra hua hai, kyunki jis self ko tum jaante ho woh unki aadaton, kahaniyon aur dayaluta mein rehta hai, sirf unke chehre mein nahi.

Answer (B) Insaan ko uske dikhne, chalne aur kaam karne ke tareeke se aasaani se alag nahi kiya ja sakta

Dance sirf dancer ke zariye hi hota hai, aur dancer dance ke zariye dikhta hai. Isi tarah self bhi looks aur actions ke zariye khud ko dikhata hai.

Town ke pehle round mein Kisa Gotami kya dhoondh rahi hai? Koi use woh kyun nahi deta?

    Solution dikhao
    • She wants medicine that will bring her dead son back to life.
    • Nobody can help: no medicine cures death.
    • The neighbours decide that grief has made her lose her reason.
    • One man sends her to the Buddha instead.
  2. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Text Q2

Jab woh doosri baar town ka chakkar lagati hai to kya maangti hai? Woh khaali haath kyun lautti hai?

    • Everyone offers seed gladly.
    • But every family has lost someone, so no seed meets the condition.
  3. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text Q3

Din ke end tak Kisa Gotami ko kaun sa sach samajh aata hai? Kya yahi woh sabak tha jo Buddha use sikhana chahte the?

    Solution dikhao
    • Death comes to every family; life, like a lamp, burns for a while and then goes out.
    • She has been selfish in her grief, thinking only of her own loss.
    • Yes. The Buddha set the task so that she would discover this herself, and his sermon then confirms it.
  4. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Text Q4

Sach usse doosri khoj ke baad hi kyun pahuncha? Buddha ne use wahan tak kaise guide kiya?

    Solution dikhao
    • In the first round she was in shock and refused to believe her son was dead; blunt words could not reach her.
    • The Buddha did not argue. He gave her a hopeful task that made her meet family after family who had lost someone.
    • Experience, not argument, changed her understanding: she saw the truth herself.
  5. Short answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Text Q5

‘Selfish’ se hum aam taur par kya matlab lete hain? Kisa Gotami apne grief mein kis matlab mein selfish thi? Kya tum khud ke baare mein uske faisle se sehmat ho?

    Solution dikhao
    • Usually: caring only about yourself, often at others' cost.
    • Her selfishness was different: grief made her see only her own loss and forget that every family suffers.
    • Opinion (either side, with a reason). Agree: shared grief helps us heal. Disagree: a mother's grief is natural, so ‘selfish’ is too harsh a word; she was simply heartbroken.

  1. Short answerMedium

Tumhe kya lagta hai, Buddha ne khaas taur par mustard seed hi kyun maanga?

    Solution dikhao

Mustard seed is found in almost every Indian home, so the task sounded easy and gave Kisa Gotami hope. It also sent her to every house, where she met family after family that had lost someone. The ordinary seed led her to an extraordinary truth: death spares no one.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • common household item
    • gave hope, kept her searching
    • led her to discover that death is universal
  2. Short answerMedium

Four sights ne Prince Siddhartha ki life kaise badli?

    Solution dikhao

Until then he had been shielded from all suffering. The sick man, the old man and the funeral showed him that illness, age and death come to everyone. The monk showed him another path. He gave up royal comfort and set out to find an answer to human sorrow.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • sheltered life before
    • three sights of suffering
    • the monk's example
    • left to seek enlightenment
  3. Short answerMedium

‘Arrow of lamentation’ ko bahar nikaalne se Buddha ka kya matlab hai?

    Solution dikhao

Grief, complaint and weeping are like an arrow stuck in the heart: while it stays, the wound cannot heal and the pain grows. Drawing it out means letting go of endless mourning and accepting the loss. Only then can a person become composed and find peace of mind.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • arrow = grief and lamentation
    • wound cannot heal while it stays
    • letting go brings composure and peace
  4. Short answerMedium

Sermon ke hisaab se samajhdaar log shok kyun nahi manate?

    Solution dikhao

The wise understand the law of life: everyone who is born must die, and no one can save another from death. They also know that weeping brings back neither the dead nor peace, but only adds pain. So they accept loss calmly.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • death is certain for all
    • no one can prevent it
    • weeping only harms the mourner
  5. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q1

Speaker kehta hai ki ladki ke sunehre baal young men ko ‘thrown into despair’ chhod dete hain. Uska kya matlab hai?

    Solution dikhao

Her thick golden hair is so beautiful that it overwhelms young men, who fall hopelessly in love. They are in despair because they cannot win her, and because they are dazzled by her looks. The phrase is a playful exaggeration of her beauty's power.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • beauty of her golden hair
    • admirers fall hopelessly in love
    • hyperbole
  6. Short answerMedium

Kya baal rangne se young woman ki problem solve ho jaayegi? Ek reason do.

    Solution dikhao

Probably not. A new colour would still be a look, and admirers would still be drawn by her appearance, whatever the shade. The poem suggests that humans can never fully separate a person from her looks; only God loves the self alone. Changing the outside cannot reveal the inside.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • any colour is still appearance
    • human love is drawn by looks
    • only divine love is purely for the self

  1. Long answerMedium

Kisa Gotami ka character sketch likho.

    Solution dikhao

Kisa Gotami is a loving mother whose grief is so deep that she cannot accept her only son's death. She carries his body from door to door, begging for medicine, which shows both her devotion and her desperation. She is persistent and hopeful: when the Buddha asks for mustard seed, she sets out eagerly and visits house after house. She is also honest and open to learning. Watching the city lamps, she realises that death comes to every family and admits that she has been selfish in her grief. She does not turn bitter. Instead she grows calm and wise. Her journey from denial to acceptance is the heart of the story.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • loving, devoted mother
    • desperate and persistent
    • open to learning, honest about herself
    • change from denial to acceptance
    • evidence from both rounds
  2. Long answerHard

“The Buddha was a great teacher.” Buddha Kisa Gotami ki madad kaise karte hain, iske hawale se discuss karo.

    Solution dikhao

The Buddha shows the qualities of a great teacher. First, he is compassionate: he does not dismiss Kisa Gotami as mad, as her neighbours did. Second, he understands that she is not ready to hear the truth, so he does not lecture her. Instead he sets her a simple task, collecting mustard seed from a home where no one has died. Through it, she discovers for herself that death is universal. Only then does he explain, with images from daily life such as ripe fruit and clay pots, why grief must be let go. Because she has lived the lesson, it changes her. Good teachers, like him, guide learners to discover truths instead of forcing answers on them.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • compassion and patience
    • learning by discovery (the mustard seed task)
    • clear, simple images in the sermon
    • the lesson changes her
    • a general point about good teaching
  3. Long answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q4

‘For Anne Gregory’ bahari khoobsurti aur andar ke self ka contrast dikhati hai. Kya tumhe lagta hai ki aaj log character se zyada looks ko value karte hain? Poem ke hawale se answer do.

    Solution dikhao

In the poem, a young man tells a golden-haired girl that no man will love her for herself alone, because her beauty dazzles everyone. She offers to dye her hair, but he answers that only God could love her purely for herself. I think the poem is still true today. Social media filters, advertisements for fairness creams and fashion trends show how much we value appearance. First impressions are often based on looks. Yet the people we truly love, such as parents and old friends, we love for their kindness and loyalty. Like the poem, I believe looks attract us first, but character is what makes love last.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • summary of the poem's argument
    • clear opinion
    • modern examples
    • contrast of attraction and lasting love
    • about 120 words
  4. Long answerMediumNCERT Speaking

Kisa Gotami ko tab tasalli mili jab usne dekha ki doosron ne bhi dukh jhela tha. Hum shok mana rahe kisi insaan ki madad kaise kar sakte hain? Unit ke ideas use karo.

    Solution dikhao

The story shows that grief eases when it is shared. Kisa Gotami's pain lifted once she saw that every family had lost someone. The modern texts in the unit add practical advice. The coping guide says grief brings many feelings, from anger to tiredness, so we should be patient and never judge. Etzioni's family found comfort in caring for one another and keeping busy together. So we can help a grieving friend by staying close, listening without lecturing, sharing everyday tasks and reminding them that they are not alone. Most of all, we should give them time, because, as the Buddha showed, acceptance cannot be forced; it has to be reached.

Examiner in key points ko dhoondhta hai:

    • lesson from the story: shared grief
    • patience and listening (guide)
    • practical care (Etzioni)
    • acceptance takes time
    • personal, sensitive tone

  1. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q1

Jab speaker uske baalon ko ‘honey-coloured ramparts’ kehta hai to woh kaun si tasveer banata hai? Yeh young men ko despair mein kyun daal deti hai?

    Solution dikhao
    • Her hair is thick, golden like honey, and frames her face and ear like the walls of a fort.
    • Young men are dazzled and fall hopelessly in love.
    • Like a wall, the hair stops them from seeing the real person inside.
  2. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q2

Ladki ke baalon ka rang aur woh rang batao jinmein woh kehti hai ki baal rang sakti hai. Uski wajah kya hai?

    Solution dikhao
    • Yellow (golden, honey-coloured).
    • Brown, black or carrot (orange-red).
    • So that men would love her for herself, not for her hair.
  3. Short answerEasyNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q3

Koi cheez chuno jise tum bechna chahoge, jaise purana phone ya school bag. Buyer ko lubhane ke liye tum kin qualities par zor doge?

    Solution dikhao

Model (a used phone): a camera that takes sharp photos even at night, a battery that lasts a full day, a scratch-free screen and a low price. A seller points to whatever makes the item better than its rivals.

Link to the poem: we value objects for their qualities. The poem asks whether we treat people the same way.

  4. Short answerMediumNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q4

Kya hum kisi se sirf uske asli roop ke liye, uski qualities se alag, pyaar kar sakte hain? Examples ke saath discuss karo: maa-baap aur naya janma bachcha, fans aur celebrity, ek dost, ek pet.

    Solution dikhao
    • Parents love a newborn, or a child with a disability, before knowing any of the child's qualities: love for the person.
    • Fans love a star for talent or looks; that love can fade when the qualities fade.
    • True friends stay when we fail; a pet loves us without caring how we look.
    • Conclusion: such love is possible, though qualities often attract us first.
  5. Short answerHardNCERT Thinking about the Poem Q5

Yeats ek aur jagah poochhte hain ki hum dancer ko dance se alag kaise jaan sakte hain. Kya kisi insaan ko uske looks, awaaz aur andaaz se alag kiya ja sakta hai? Kisi aise insaan ke baare mein socho jiska roop waqt ke saath badal gaya hai.

    Solution dikhao

Not completely. We know people through how they look, speak and act, just as we know a dancer through the dance. But our relationship can grow beyond appearance. My grandmother's hair has turned white and she walks slowly now, yet I love her more, because I know her stories, her humour and her care. Looks change; the self we know through a lifetime stays.
