1.1 Padhne se pehle

Socho ki tumhari family ki poore saal ki income ek hi khet mein ug rahi hai, aur ek dopahar ka kharaab mausam use mita deta hai. Tum kiske paas jaoge? Yeh story poochti hai ki humein apni faith kis par rakhni chahiye, Lencho ke zariye, jo ek kisaan hai aur letter likhkar God se madad maangta hai. Ise apni NCERT book mein padho; yeh page tumhara companion hai.

Bhejne wala post office ke counter par paise deta hai, aur postman receiver ke darwaze par jaakar use cash deta hai.

Aaj India Post money orders electronically bhejta hai (eMO), isliye paise jaldi pahunchte hain. Idea wahi hai: sender amount ke saath ek chhoti fee deta hai jise commission kehte hain, receiver cash lene par sign karta hai, aur payment ka proof sender ke paas wapas aata hai. Wahi proof acknowledgement hai.

4/4Signed acknowledgement payment ke proof ke roop mein sender ke paas wapas aata hai.

Step 2, Travel: ek arrow money order ko sender ke post office se right wale receiver ke post office tak le jaata hai. Step 3, Pay: postman receiver ke ghar par cash deta hai, aur receiver form par sign karta hai. Step 4, Proof: ek dashed arrow signed acknowledgement ko sender ke paas wapas laata hai, jise ab pata chal jaata hai ki paise pahunch gaye.

Answer (1) sender, (2) receiver

Paise receiver ke paas jaate hain; proof sender ke paas wapas aata hai.

1.3 Story padhna

Story ke teen hisse hain: ek storm jo sab barbaad kar deta hai, ek letter jo madad maangta hai, aur ek reply jo ek anokhe tareeke se ulta pad jaata hai. Setting ek farming valley hai, shayad rural Mexico mein: writer Mexican the aur story mein paise pesos mein hain. Fasal corn hai, jiska matlab yahan maize (मक्का) hai, jo Mexican families ka main khaana hai.

6/6Sirf seventy pesos: woh post office staff ko blame karta hai.

Fig. 1.2Lencho ki hope roller coaster ki tarah upar-neeche hoti hai; story khushi par nahi, gusse par khatam hoti hai.

Ek graph jismein neeche story ke moments hain aur side mein Lencho ki hope ka level. Step 1: baarish ka intezaar karte hue hope high hai. Step 2: sabse ooncha point jab pehli boondein girti hain aur woh unhe coins kehta hai. Step 3: jab hail maize ko barbaad kar deta hai to tez girawat, bilkul neeche tak. Step 4: God ko letter likhte hue hope phir se badhti hai. Step 5: paise aane par hope sabse upar pahunchti hai. Step 6: sirf seventy pesos ginne par woh gusse mein badal jaati hai.

1.3.1 Part I: Woh baarish jo barf ban gayi

Lencho ek kisaan hai jiska poora saal maize ke ek khet par tika hai. Paudhe pak chuke hain aur unpar phool aa gaye hain, aur uski family aur ek achhi fasal ke beech bas ek achhi baarish ki kami hai. Ghaati ke upar ek neechi pahaadi par akele bane apne ghar se, woh poori subah north-east ke aasmaan mein baadal dhoondhta rehta hai.

Baarish family ke khaane ke samay aati hai, bilkul jaisa usne predict kiya tha. Khush hokar woh sirf uska mazaa lene bahar jaata hai, aur wapas aakar boondon ko coins kehta hai, badi boondein chhoti boondon se zyada keemti. Ek kisaan ke liye baarish ka matlab fasal hai, aur fasal ka matlab paise.

Phir hawa tez ho jaati hai aur baarish hail mein badal jaati hai. Ladke chamakti barf ikattha karne bahar daudte hain; unke pita ummeed karte hain ki yeh jaldi ruk jaayega. Aisa nahi hota. Hail poore ek ghante tak girta rehta hai aur valley mein sab kuch kuchal deta hai. Jab yeh rukta hai, to kuch bhi hara khada nahi bachta: patte, phool aur maize sab khatam ho jaate hain. Lencho apne beton se kehta hai ki locusts ka jhund bhi isse bura nahi kar sakta tha. Family ek dukh bhari raat bitati hai, use pakka lagta hai ki aane wala saal bhookh laayega.

Story ki shuruaat mein Lencho kis cheez ki ummeed kar raha tha?
Answer dekho

Answer (D) ek achhi baarish

Uski maize pak chuki thi aur usmein phool aa gaye the; poori fasal ke liye bas baarish chahiye thi. Hawa baad mein aayi, aur woh hail laayi jisne sab barbaad kar diya.

Uski zindagi bhale hi bhaari mehnat wali ho, Lencho likhna jaanta hai. Agle Sunday subah-subah woh God ko letter likhta hai aur samjhata hai ki madad ke bina uski family bhookhi rahegi. Woh sau pesos maangta hai: itne ki dobara boya ja sake aur agli fasal tak family ka pet bhar sake. Woh envelope par God ka address likhta hai, khud use shahar le jaata hai aur post kar deta hai.

Post office mein ek postman ko aisa ajeeb address dikhta hai jaisa usne kabhi nahi dekha tha, aur woh hanste hue letter apne boss ke paas le jaata hai. Postmaster, ek mota aur dayalu aadmi, ko bhi yeh mazedaar lagta hai, lekin bas ek pal ke liye. Likhne wale ka God par bharosa use chhoo jaata hai; woh chahta hai ki uski apni faith bhi itni mazboot hoti. Woh reply karne ka faisla karta hai, taaki kisaan ka yakeen bana rahe.

Lekin reply ke liye sirf achhe shabd nahi, paise bhi chahiye. Postmaster apni salary ka ek hissa deta hai, apne staff se contribute karne ko kehta hai aur kuch doston ko charity ke roop mein kuch dene ke liye manaata hai.

Answer dekho

Answer (C) God

Use yakeen tha ki God sab dekhta hai aur madad karega, isliye usne seedhe God ko likha. Is samay tak woh postmaster ko bilkul nahi jaanta tha.

1.3.3 Part III: Reply aur doosra letter

Ek hafte baad Lencho phir post office aata hai, thoda jaldi, aur apna letter maangta hai. Postman use letter de deta hai. Postmaster apne room se chupchaap dekhta hai, apne kiye achhe kaam se khush.

Envelope mein paise dekh kar Lencho ko zara bhi hairaani nahi hoti: use pakka yakeen tha ki God jawab dega. Lekin ginna alag baat hai, aur uska chehra utar jaata hai. Uski nazar mein God hisaab mein galti nahi karta aur ek believer ko jo chahiye woh rokta nahi. To zaroor kisi ne baaki paise le liye honge.

Woh kaagaz aur ink udhaar leta hai aur public ke liye rakhi table par, dheere-dheere aur badi mehnat se, phir likhta hai. Phir woh ek stamp khareedta hai, mukka maar kar use envelope par chipkata hai aur letter post kar deta hai. Postmaster use turant kholta hai. Lencho God ko batata hai ki use sirf seventy pesos mile aur baaki paise maangta hai. Woh ek warning bhi deta hai: God ko post se nahi bhejna chahiye, kyunki wahan ka staff, uske shabdon mein, “a bunch of crooks” hai.

1.4 Text ke baare mein sochna

Is story par achha answer hamesha is par tika hota hai ki characters kya karte hain. Lencho aur postmaster kabhi aamne-saamne nahi milte, phir bhi dono ka action ek doosre ki zindagi ko shape karta hai. Dono ko saath-saath compare karo.

Compare

Lencho aur postmaster

Lencho, kisaan

  • Mehnati; apni zameen ko achhi tarah jaanta hai
  • Likh sakta hai, bhale hi mehnat se
  • God mein poori, bina sawaal ki faith
  • Bhola: ummeed karta hai ki God post se reply karega
  • God par bharosa, logon par shaq
  • Anjaane mein ehsaan-faramosh

Postmaster

  • Khush-mizaaj aur friendly
  • Pehle hansta hai, phir letter ki izzat karta hai
  • Generous: apni salary se deta hai
  • Practical: reply karne ka raasta nikaalta hai
  • Humble: God ke naam se sign karta hai, credit nahi leta
  • Achhe kaam mein khushi paata hai

Chhote characters bhi matter karte hain. Lencho ki wife bhi God ki marzi mein uski tarah faith rakhti hai. Ladke, jinke liye hail ek khel hai, yaad dilaate hain ki bachche aur bade ek hi ghatna ko kitne alag tareeke se dekhte hain. Postman, jo pehle letter par hansta hai, postmaster ke neeche kaam karta hai, isliye woh bhi un staff mein hai jinse paise dene ko kaha gaya.

1.4.1 Themes aur message

  • Faith. Lencho ka God par bharosa poora aur bachchon jaisa hai. Postmaster use admire karta hai aur use bachane ke liye kaam karta hai. Story poochti hai ki kya faith mein logon par bharosa bhi shaamil hona chahiye.
  • Ajnabiyon ki kindness. Jin logon par Lencho ka koi ehsaan nahi, woh uski madad ke liye apne paise dete hain, aur badle mein kuch nahi chahte.
  • Irony. Madad karne waalon ko aakhir mein chor kaha jaata hai (dekho Fig. 1.3).
  • Conflict. Insaan vs nature (hailstorm) aur insaan vs insaan (Lencho ka post office staff par shaq).
  • Kisaan ki mausam par nirbharta. Ek storm saal bhar ki income mita sakta hai, yeh sach Indian kisaan achhi tarah jaante hain jab March mein bemausam hail gehun ya angoor ki fasal bichha deta hai.

Irony (विडंबना) woh fark hai jo hum expect karte hain aur jo sach mein hota hai, unke beech. Is story mein yeh fark bahut bada hai.

3/3Asal mein dene wale hi Lencho ki soch mein 'chor' hain.

Fig. 1.3Jin logon ne paise diye, Lencho unhi par chori ka ilzaam lagata hai.

Boxes ki do rows. Step 1, asli story: postmaster, staff aur dost paise dete hain, jo Lencho ke liye seventy pesos bante hain. Step 2, Lencho ka version: God sau pesos bhejta hai, post office staff thirty le leta hai, aur seventy Lencho tak pahunchte hain. Step 3, irony: ek arrow upar wali row ke dene walon ko neeche wali row ke label 'crooks' se jodta hai, jo dikhata hai ki madad karne wale hi ilzaam jhel rahe hain.

Conflict (संघर्ष) ke do types bhi dekho. Pehla saaf dikhta hai: ek kisaan aur ek storm jisse woh lad nahi sakta. Doosra Lencho ke mann mein chhupa hai: woh post office staff ke khilaaf ho jaata hai, jinhone uska sirf bhala hi kiya hai. Pehla conflict bad luck ke baare mein hai; doosra galatfehmi ke baare mein.

Postmaster ne letter par God ke naam se sign kyun kiya?
Answer dekho

Answer (D) Woh nahi chahta tha ki Lencho ki God mein faith hil jaaye.

Uska poora maqsad kisaan ka yakeen banaye rakhna tha. Insaan ka naam hota to pata chal jaata ki God ne reply nahi kiya. Story mein kisi rule ya aur maangon ke darr ka zikr nahi hai.

  1. Short answerEasyThinking about the Text Q1

Lencho ek pal ke liye bhi God par shaq nahi karta. Story se do actions batao jo saabit karte hain ki uski faith kitni poori hai.

    Solution dikhao

He writes a letter addressed to God and posts it himself, sure it will be delivered. When the money arrives he is not surprised at all. Even when the amount is short, he blames people rather than God and asks God for the rest.

    • Key points: writes and posts the letter to God
    • no surprise at the money
    • never suspects God of a mistake
  2. Short answerEasyThinking about the Text Q2

Postmaster ke paise bhejne ka faisla karne ke do reasons do, aur batao ki woh note par God ke naam se sign kyun karta hai.

    Solution dikhao

He is moved by the farmer's simple faith and wishes he had it himself. He does not want that faith to be broken by silence. He signs as God because a human name would reveal the truth, and he wants no credit for his kindness.

    • Key points: admires the faith
    • wants to protect it
    • signature keeps the belief alive
    • humility
  3. Short answerEasyThinking about the Text Q3

Lencho kabhi nahi poochta ki paise asal mein kisne bheje. Kyun nahi?

    Solution dikhao

He has no doubt at all that God sent it. To him, asking would be pointless: the money came in reply to his letter to God, signed by God. His faith leaves no room for questions.

    • Key points: certain God sent it
    • the signature confirmed it
    • unquestioning faith
  4. Short answerMediumThinking about the Text Q4

Lencho ko gaayab pesos lene ka shaq kis par hai? Ismein irony kya hai?

    Solution dikhao

He suspects the post office employees. This is ironic because they, along with the postmaster, gave their own money to help him. The kindest people in the story are the ones he calls thieves.

    • Key points: post office staff
    • they were the donors
    • expected gratitude, got accusation
  5. Long answerMediumThinking about the Text Q5

Kuch readers Lencho ko greedy kehte hain; kuch innocent. Tum kis view se agree karte ho? Apne answer mein in words mein se do use karo: simple, trusting, ungrateful, comic, stubborn.

    Solution dikhao

Lencho is innocent rather than greedy. He asks God only for what he needs to replant and survive, not for riches. He is simple and trusting: he believes a letter can reach God and that God will answer. His second letter makes him seem ungrateful and even comic to us, but he does not know who helped him, so his ingratitude is accidental. People like him exist: anyone who trusts completely, without checking, can misjudge those around them.

    • Key points: takes a clear position
    • need, not greed
    • two words used with evidence
    • ingratitude is unknowing
  6. Long answerMediumThinking about the Text Q6

Lencho pehle mausam se aur phir logon se jhoojhta hai. Dono struggles samjhao, har ek ke example ke saath.

    Solution dikhao

The first is between humans and nature. Lencho's ripe maize is destroyed by an hour of hail, and no human effort can stop it. The second is between humans. Lencho believes the post office employees have stolen thirty pesos, so he turns against them in his second letter. The first conflict is real and visible; the second exists only in Lencho's mind, which makes it ironic.

    • Key points: hailstorm vs farmer
    • Lencho vs post office staff
    • one real, one imagined

1.5 Language ke baare mein sochna

NCERT ka language work story se hi nikalta hai: hail se storm words, hope word, relative clauses, emphasis ke liye negatives, aur metaphors. Neeche har part rule ko aasaan words mein, naye examples aur practice ke saath deta hai.

1.5.1 Storms ke liye words

Hail tab banta hai jab thundercloud ke andar tez hawa ke currents baarish ki boondon ko baar-baar upar freezing hawa mein le jaate hain, aur barf ki ek ke upar ek layer banti jaati hai. Aakhir mein jo dhele neeche girte hain woh hailstones hain, aur storm ko hailstorm kehte hain. English mein storm ke kai aur words hain, aur sahi word is par depend karta hai ki hawa kaise chalti hai aur storm kahan banta hai.

1.5.3 Relative clauses

Relative clause kisi noun ke baare mein information jodta hai. Yeh ek relative pronoun se shuru hota hai: who (log, subject ke roop mein), whom (log, object ke roop mein), whose (kisi ka hona) ya which (cheezein aur jaanwar).

Yeh raha ek quick test. Clause ko hata do: kya tumhe ab bhi theek pata hai ki kiski ya kis cheez ki baat ho rahi hai? Agar haan, to clause ek non-defining relative clause hai, kisi pehle se pehchaane gaye insaan ke baare mein bonus information. Ise ek hataaye ja sakne wale insert ki tarah punctuate karo, uske pehle aur baad mein comma lagakar ya dashes ki ek jodi se. Jab yeh sentence ke end mein aata hai, to doosre comma ki jagah full stop aa jaata hai.

  • My grandmother, who grew up in Darjeeling, still drinks her tea without sugar.
  • The Taj Mahal, which stands on the bank of the Yamuna, draws visitors from all over the world.
  • Our class teacher, whom everyone admires, retires this year.
  • Mr Rao, whose shop sells old books, knows every customer by name.

3/4Ise utha lo: sentence ab bhi poora aur sahi hai.

Fig. 1.5Non-defining clause ko nikaal do aur sentence phir bhi khada rehta hai: yahi test hai.NCERT Thinking about Language III · p. 9

Ek sentence strip par likha hai: My aunt, who teaches maths, lives in Pune. Step 1 poora sentence dikhata hai. Step 2 do commas ke beech clause who teaches maths ko highlight karta hai aur use extra information label karta hai. Step 3 clause ko strip se bahar utha leta hai, aur bache words, My aunt lives in Pune, ab bhi poora sentence bante hain. Step 4 ek hidden-pronoun example jodta hai: Kavya, the youngest player, scored, jahan who is hata diya gaya hai.

Kabhi-kabhi relative pronoun aur uska verb hata diye jaate hain, aur commas ya dashes ke beech sirf ek chhota describing phrase bachta hai. Kavya — the youngest player in the team — scored the winning goal ka matlab hai Kavya, who is the youngest player in the team, scored the winning goal. Pronoun chhupa hua hai, lekin matlab wahi hai.

1.5.4 Emphasis ke liye negatives ka use

Zyaadatar negative word kisi baat ko nakaarta hai: There is no milk. Lekin kuch fixed patterns ek positive idea ki awaaz tez karne ke liye negative word use karte hain. Inhe strong positives ki tarah padho.

Table 1.4Emphasis dene wale negatives

Story bhi yeh patterns use karti hai. Coins wale Lencho ke mazaak ko phir se dekho: woh pehle yeh kyun nakaar sakta hai ki boondein baarish hain hi? Yeh inkaar uski baat ko aur tez banata hai, kyunki uske liye yeh paani paisa hai.

1.5.5 Metaphors

Metaphor (रूपक) yeh keh kar ki ek cheez doosri cheez hai, ek cheez ki quality doosri tak le jaata hai. Iska Greek root, metaphora, ka matlab hai kuch aage le jaana. Jab hum the foot of the hill kehte hain, to hum pair ka idea udhaar lete hain, jo shareer ka sabse neeche ka hissa hai. A sea of faces bheed ke liye samundar ka phailaav udhaar leta hai. Agar comparison mein like ya as ho, to woh simile (उपमा) hai: the crowd was like a sea.

1.6.3 Writing: ek poster

1/5Poora poster: border ke andar lagbhag 35 words.

Fig. 1.7Ek model poster: slogan, visual, chhote tips aur issuer, sab ek hi border ke andar.NCERT Writing · p. 12

Border ke andar ek lamba poster. Sabse upar slogan Every Drop Counts. Uske neeche paani ki boond aur rain barrel ki ek simple drawing. 1.7 Dust of Snow

Kya kabhi tumhara koi boring, chidchida din kisi chhoti si cheez ne bacha liya hai: dost ka koi joke, pehli baarish ki khushboo, apni poonch ke peeche bhaagta koi puppy? Robert Frost ki yeh aath lines ki poem bilkul aise hi ek pal ke baare mein hai.

Poem ek nazar mein. Chaar-chaar chhoti lines ke do stanzas, aur sab milkar ek hi sentence. Pehla stanza ek ghatna describe karta hai; doosra uska asar batata hai. Poem apni NCERT book mein padho, phir yeh notes use karo.

  • Stanza 1 (ghatna). Speaker sardi ke ek din hemlock tree ke neeche hai. Upar baitha ek crow hilta hai, aur us hilne se barf ka mehin powder us par gir jaata hai. Aur kuch nahi hota: na koi words, na drama, bas ek halki, thandi phuhaar.
  • Stanza 2 (asar). Woh chhoti si phuhaar uska mood achha kar deti hai. Uska din aisa ja raha tha jiska use afsos tha, rued ka yahi matlab hai, lekin ab uska ek hissa bach jaata hai. Imaandaari par dhyaan do: poem yeh daava nahi karti ki poora din bach gaya, sirf ek hissa.

Grammar ke hisaab se poora pehla stanza sentence ka subject hai, aur main verb sirf line 5 mein aata hai. Poem humein asar ke liye intezaar karwati hai, bilkul waise hi jaise speaker ko kisi asar ki ummeed nahi thi.

3/3Halki, thandi chhuan uska mood badal deti hai; din ka ek hissa bach jaata hai.

Fig. 1.8Ek chhoti si ghatna, crow ka daal se barf jhaadna, udaas mood ko achha kar deti hai.NCERT Dust of Snow · p. 14

Left mein ek gehra, cone jaise shape ka evergreen tree hai jiski ek daal par crow baitha hai aur neeche raasta hai. Right mein ek vertical mood meter hai, neeche gloomy se upar lighter tak. Step 1: barf nahi gir rahi aur meter neeche hai, label a day he rued. Step 2: crow apne pankh uthaata hai aur daal se safed barf ke kanon ki phuhaar girti hai. Step 3: meter ki sui lighter ki taraf upar jaati hai, label kuch hissa bacha.

1.7.1 Symbols, tone aur devices

Poem ka surprise uske symbols (प्रतीक) mein hai. Poets aam taur par khushi laane ke liye koyal, nightingale ya skylark chunte hain. Frost ek crow chunte hain, ek kaala pakshi jiski kadvi awaaz ko kai cultures bad luck ya maut se jodte hain. Hemlock tree aur udaasi jodta hai, kyunki uska naam ek mashhoor zeher ki yaad dilaata hai. Barf bhi sardi ki hai, thanda aur bejaan mausam. Phir bhi inhi andheri cheezon se khushi ka pal aata hai.

Compare

Hum kya expect karte hain vs Frost kya karte hain

Hum kya expect karte hain

  • crow: bad luck, udaasi
  • hemlock: zeher, maut
  • snow: thandi, bejaan sardi

Kya hota hai

  • crow raahat laata hai
  • hemlock mein tohfa chhupa hai
  • snow taazgi deti hai

Tone shaant, reflective aur shukraguzaar hai. Mood afsos se raahat ki taraf jaata hai, aur message yeh hai ki chhote pal bhi bada matlab rakh sakte hain. Nature udaas mood ko theek kar sakti hai, aur khushi sabse anokhi jagah se bhi aa sakti hai.

  • Symbolism: crow, hemlock aur snow udaasi ke symbols hain, phir bhi khushi laate hain.
  • Metaphor: dust of snow barf ko powder jaisi mehin aur halki dikhata hai.
  • Rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD, simple aur regular, bilkul us pal ki tarah.
  • Enjambment: ek hi sentence line ke end par ruke bina aage chalta rehta hai.
  • Alliteration: line 5 ki shuruaat ki naram h awaazein.
  • Imagery aur contrast: ek hi picture mein kaala crow, safed barf aur gehra tree.
  • Feelings ke liye heart: heart speaker ki emotions ka symbol hai.

Practice 1.7: Poem ke baare mein sochna: answers ke saath

  1. Short answerEasyThinking about the Poem (Dust of Snow) Q1

Speaker par kya girta hai, aur woh uske din ke saath kya karta hai?

    Solution dikhao

A fine powder of snow, shaken from a hemlock branch by a crow, falls on him. It changes his gloomy mood, and part of a day he had regretted is rescued.

    • Key points: snow shaken by a crow
    • mood changes
    • part of the day saved
  2. Long answerMediumThinking about the Poem (Dust of Snow) Q2

Frost koyal aur mango tree bhi chun sakte the. Tumhe kya lagta hai, unhone uski jagah crow aur hemlock kyun chune? Yeh aur snow kis cheez ke symbols hain?

    Solution dikhao

Crows and hemlocks are usually linked with gloom: the crow with bad luck and the hemlock with poison. Snow stands for cold and lifeless winter. By choosing them, Frost shows that even ordinary or unpleasant parts of nature can lift our spirits. The surprise is the point: joy can arrive from the least expected source. The dust of snow itself stands for a small, refreshing moment that changes everything.

    • Key points: usual associations named
    • nature heals even through 'gloomy' things
    • the dust of snow as a small turning point
  3. Short answerEasyThinking about the Poem (Dust of Snow) Q3

Ek chhote pal ke baare mein batao jisne tumhara bura din badal diya. Use poem se jodo.

    Solution dikhao

Model: After failing a class test, I walked home feeling low. A little girl on a scooter waved at me and laughed, and I found myself smiling back. Like the dust of snow, that small, unplanned moment did not fix my marks, but it saved the rest of my evening.

    • Key points: a specific personal moment
    • mood before and after
    • a clear link to the poem

1.8 Fire and Ice

Duniya kaise khatam hogi? Scientists ka anumaan hai ki lagbhag five billion saal mein Sun phool kar red giant ban jaayega, aur andar ke planets ko jala dega ya nigal lega; kuch log ek aise universe ki kalpana karte hain jo dheere-dheere thanda hokar jam jaata hai.

  • Part 1 (pehli chaar lines): bahas. Poem ek aisi bahas se shuru hoti hai jo log sadiyon se karte aaye hain: duniya jalegi ya jam jaayegi? Speaker ek personal reason ke saath isme shaamil hota hai. Usne desire mehsoos ki hai aur jaanta hai ki woh kaise sab kuch kha jaati hai, isliye woh fire ko vote deta hai. Yahan desire ka matlab hai har bhookhi chahat, paise, power ya cheezon ki, jo jitna khilao utni badhti hai.
  • Part 2 (aakhri paanch lines): ek doosra ant. Phir woh duniya ke doosri baar khatam hone ki kalpana karta hai. Logon ke beech kitni nafrat hai yeh dekh kar woh nateeje par pahunchta hai ki ice bhi utni hi kaabil hogi. Hate frost ki tarah dheere kaam karti hai: woh logon ko thanda, bekhabar aur sakht bana deti hai jab tak kuch bhi garam nahi bachta.

4/4Speaker ka faisla: dono mein se koi bhi force duniya ko barbaad kar sakti hai.

Fig. 1.9Fire desire ka aur ice hate ka symbol hai: dono mein se koi bhi feeling duniya ko barbaad kar sakti hai.NCERT Fire and Ice · p. 15

Beech mein ek globe hai. Step 1 do mumkin ant dikhata hai: left mein fire label wali lapten aur right mein ice label wale frost crystals. Step 2 fire wali side ko highlight karta hai aur batata hai ki woh kiska symbol hai: desire, greed, rage, jealousy. Step 3 ice wali side ko highlight karta hai aur hate, coldness, indifference list karta hai. Step 4 dono sides ko saath active dikhata hai, beech mein label dono hi kaafi ke saath.

Poem asal mein planet ke baare mein nahi hai. Yeh warning deti hai ki bekaabu desire aur gehri nafrat logon, families aur deshon ko barbaad kar sakti hai. Laalach ki ladaiyan aur nafrat se paida hue conflicts, dono history mein jaane-pehchaane hain.

Compare

Fire aur ice kiske symbol hain

Fire: desire

  • greed
  • lust for power
  • jealousy
  • rage
  • reckless ambition

Ice: hate

  • hatred
  • coldness
  • indifference
  • contempt
  • prejudice

1.8.1 Tone, devices aur rhyme

Tone shaant, baatcheet jaisa aur halka sa ironic hai. Speaker duniya ke ant ki baat aise karta hai jaise chai par apni raay de raha ho. Uska aakhri faisla, ki ice “would suffice”, ek zabardast understatement hai: poori barbaadi ke liye ek naram sa word. Yahi shaanti warning ko aur darawna bana deti hai.

LineEnd wordRhyme
1fireA
2iceB
3desireA
4fireA
5twiceB
6hateC
7iceB

9sufficeB

Rhyme scheme (तुकांत योजना) ABAABCBCB hai, jo sirf teen sounds par bani hai. Pehle hisse mein fire wali sound chhaayi rehti hai aur doosre mein ice wali, lekin dono aapas mein bune hue hain. Pattern khud dikhata hai ki do ulti forces ek chhoti si duniya mein bandhi hain, aur dono mein se har ek use khatam karne ke liye kaafi mazboot hai. Aakhri do lines mein sirf teen-teen words hain, isliye poem ek shaant dhamak ke saath khatam hoti hai.

  • Symbolism: fire desire ke liye, ice hate ke liye.
  • Contrast (antithesis): garam vs thanda, tez vs dheema.
  • Repetition: pehli do lines dono Some say se shuru hoti hain.
  • Understatement aur irony: duniya ke ant ko bas kaafi kaha gaya.
  • Enjambment: lines 5–9 ek lambe thought ki tarah bina ruke chalti hain.

'Fire and Ice' mein speaker pehle fire ka saath kyun deta hai, aur phir kyun kehta hai ki ice bhi kaafi hogi?

    Solution dikhao

Practice questions answers ke saath (NCERT “Long-answer questions (100–120 words)”)

  1. Long answerMedium

Story ke evidence ke saath Lencho ka character sketch likho.

    Solution dikhao

Lencho is a hard-working farmer who knows his land intimately and watches the sky like an expert. Though his life is one of physical labour, he can write. His defining quality is his total, unquestioning faith in God. After the hail, he does not despair for long; he writes to God, sure of a reply. When the money comes, he is not surprised at all. Yet his faith is naive. He cannot imagine that people helped him, so he accuses the kind post office staff of theft. He is not greedy, since he asks only for what he needs. Lencho is a simple, trusting man whose blind faith in God makes him unfair to people.

    • Key points: hard-working, knows his land
    • literate
    • unquestioning faith with evidence
    • naive and unknowingly ungrateful
    • not greedy
  2. Long answerHard

“Faith in God is not complete without faith in people.” 'A Letter to God' ke reference se is par charcha karo.

    Solution dikhao

Lencho's faith in God is perfect: he writes to God, expects a reply and never doubts it. But that faith has no room for people. When the amount is short, he assumes the post office staff are thieves. The irony is sharp, because God's help actually reached him through people: the postmaster, his staff and his friends. Their charity was an expression of faith too, since the postmaster acted to protect a stranger's belief. The story suggests that goodness in the world usually arrives through human hands. A faith that trusts God but suspects every person misreads how help works. True faith includes gratitude and trust towards the people around us.

    • Key points: Lencho's faith described
    • his distrust of people
    • help came through people (irony)
    • a clear concluding view
  3. Long answerMedium

Postmaster bina koi credit chahe madad karta hai. Uska action sachchi kindness kaise dikhata hai? Hum usse kya seekh sakte hain?

    Solution dikhao

The postmaster first laughs at the strange letter, but he quickly sees the faith behind it. He decides to help, though he owes the farmer nothing. He gives part of his own salary and persuades his staff and friends to give as well. Most importantly, he signs the reply as God, so his name never appears. He wants Lencho's faith to survive, not to be thanked. Even when Lencho's angry second letter insults his staff, the reader knows the kindness was genuine. We learn that real kindness is quiet: it gives what it can, expects nothing back and respects the dignity of the person helped.

    • Key points: notices the faith
    • personal sacrifice
    • anonymity
    • lesson stated clearly
  4. Long answerHard

Is unit ki Frost ki dono poems insaani feelings ki baat karne ke liye nature ka use karti hain. 'Dust of Snow' aur 'Fire and Ice' ke reference se samjhao.

    Solution dikhao

In 'Dust of Snow', a crow shakes snow from a hemlock onto the speaker. Crows and hemlocks usually suggest gloom, yet this small natural event lifts his mood and saves part of his day. Nature here heals human sadness. In 'Fire and Ice', fire and ice are two natural forces that could end the world. Frost uses them as symbols: fire for desire and ice for hatred. Here nature reflects the destructive power of human emotions. So in one poem nature cures a bad feeling, while in the other it mirrors our worst feelings. Both poems are short and simple on the surface, but each carries a much larger meaning.

    • Key points: Dust of Snow: event and mood change
    • Fire and Ice: symbols explained
    • contrast: healing vs warning
    • larger significance
